What a great experience at CarMax. We started at Manly Honda and ended up buying from CarMax. They shipped a vehicle from San Jose for free and we were hoping it would arrive on Saturday. We found ourselves at Manly enduring a less than pleasant experience on Thursday. Took a chance and called CarMax to see if the car had arrived early. Chenda Hou went and checked and said the car had arrived but was still on the transport truck. I asked if it would be possible to see it as we had driven an hour and half and she said to give her an hour to check it out and clean it up. True to her word we stopped by an hour later and I'm so glad we did. The car was immaculate the process was pressure free and we were out with the car in about an hour. If you have been on the fence about CarMax give them a shot, I am so glad I did. read more

I went to CarMax on 7/4/2018 to look at 2014 Hyundai Sonata Ltd. I met with their agent Chenda. The car was great and was ready to buy with cash in hand. It had a damaged sidewall on 1 tire. I said I would buy if tire issue was addressed. They said it met CarMax safety standard. It was DEFINTELY a hazard waiting to happen. I said if they reduced price so I could buy tire, they said no. I drove 50 miles to look at this car. SO disappointed in CarMax! The car had been on their lot for 45 days. They would not replace tire or take off another car. I feel I was treated shabbily! $16000 walked away for their insistence a damaged sidewall was not a safety hazard. read more

We bought a car here. The buying experience was ok. They screwed up the paperwork and requested that we came back down to resign everything. The processing with DMV took well over 3 months to process and receive our plates and registration. We also had our trade in appraised at the time of sale. We returned 4 months later to sell them the vehicle. We were initially t of that they would purchase a vehicle registered as "non-op" and that the offer would decrease because they would not be able to test drive. That was agreeable. When we showed up today to sell the vehicle we were told they could not purchase because it was registered "no-op"! This was the last straw in a string of screw ups and misinformed employees who seemed clueless at every turn. Will never go back to this location and not a good experience. Train your people so they know what they are doing! read more

There are some real problems with this outfit: It advertises that it will transfer a car from another Carmax to be considered, without any obligation. But if that transferred car is not bought for whatever reason, then it's a downright unfriendly place to attempt to do thereafter. I'd hate to have bought something with the proviso that within 30 days it can be returned, but given the attitude as experienced, I'd not do that. And, how would the sales tax be handled? That wasn't answered. Carmax will not allow any other mechanic to inspect a car you are interested in. I noticed body work done on one car, but the salesperson disputed that, said the car fax didn't show it, but the body work was obvious. An extended warranty? Expensive for what it would give. I decided I'd rather pay a dealer's CPO price. And, if you're considering paying $20 to maybe even $25 or more thousand for a car, you'd expect to be able to give it a good test drive without being treated like you're imposing on the salesperson's time. If you have any uncertainty about buying a certain model and want to get a feel for one or another, Car Max isn't the place to go. The lot might have a lot of cars, might be slightly cheaper than a dealer, but the whole thing was too questionable. I wasn't comfortable with it. read more

We showed up at CarMax on a rainy weekend and test drove several vehicles in February 2019. The sales person, Nick, was pleasant, personable and informative. No pressure. We totally appreciated it. He gave us his business card and said if we wanted him to look for a specific vehicle contact him and let him know the details. Months later after much searching, the vehicle I had settled on appeared at the CarMax site and I called Nick. He said " Go to the website and put the car "on hold" to schedule a test drive. What that meant is that nobody could test drive it or buy it before me. I drove the car. Loved it. The next day, we went back and purchased the car and the extended warranty. . It was a simple, pleasurable, and comprehensive. The only downer is that they do not allow the purchase of a vehicle using a credit card. They explained the reason and we understood but were not happy as we wanted to buy the car on a new credit car to earn bonus miles for travel. Oh well. I would recommend CarMax. read more

I came in on Monday at 10am. Completely no one to help me. I waited 3 hours to find out how we could be helped. Turns out I can't pay for the car any way that made sense including cash. Looks like they wanted me only to Finance. Must be the only way they make money. In particular the "manager" Derek wouldn't meet me half way with anything. He was rude and in the worst way where he pretends to be nice. I wouldn't recommend anyone buy a car here. Not only do you have to help yourself the entire way the employees seem to know nothing about the car if you could even find one to help you. read more

The car I purchased had several issues. This was for a 50,000 Porsch Cayman. They had done an oil change and added too much oil which activated a check engine light. They changed out the front brake pads but not the rotors. This caused a brake squeak that only went away with changing the rotors ( a requirement for a Porsch ). This repair cost me $1300.00 out of my pocket to fix as CarMax was unwilling to fix it correctly, stating it was a used car and they were unwilling to do the work they started correctly. The front hub was broken on the car causing the wheel to be at an unsafe angle. This was causing a thunking sound when the wheel was turned. This was explained as normal for the car. It turns out the wheel could have broken loose at any time causing major damage to the car. This was completely missed during the inspection but noticed in seconds by a qualified Porsch mechanic. The wheel hubs and oil issue were fixed by my mechanic and paid for by CarMax however I was told I would need to pay for the brake job myself as they were unwilling to do any more repairs even though they stated they had been repaired and inspected. My wife drove home, 60 miles away in the dark and rain with a car CarMax stated had been inspected and repaired that had not and they only stood behind some of the issues they had created due to an unqualified mechanic at CarMax working on the car. read more

I will continue to bring my car here for service even though it is out of my way because I have confidence that I am getting good workmanship for my money. They have a nice selection of cars, at reasonable prices, but the process of buying one is awful. The sales people don't have any authority, the managers have to be called over every little thing, their check verification process is ridiculous, and they don't seem to realize how ridiculous their system is. After a recent very pleasant experience at Redwood Credit Union car sales, this was a real letdown. We were there for six hours on a Saturday afternoon, even after making an appointment and knowing which two cars we wanted to test drive. The sales paperwork took a long time, since the salesperson was not able to do it, and he kept having to wait for someone else's approval. Then we had to wait more than half an hour for it to be printed out for our signature, because there was only one person authorized to print the paperwork, explain it, and collect all the signatures. She was working as fast as she could, while several customers waited after us and four or five sales people just waited around. read more

The best car buying experience I've ever had, hand down. I found the car that I liked online. It was about 230 miles away in Fresno. I submitted an inquiry online and about a hour later Ian from CarMax Santa Rosa called me. We talked about the car, he got me all the details about it and he arranged to have it sent up to Santa Rosa for me, for free! I didn't have to make a commitment to purchase or anything. When it got here 3 days later Ian called me and I went in. It was exactly how it was pictured on the website. While I test drove it, they appraised my trade in. I sold them my car, I bought this one...no hassle, no pushy BS, no haggling. From stepping on the lot to driving away in my new to me car was roughly 4 hours. I could not have been happier. I ordered a car to be shipped here. I got a text from the salesperson saying that it was here and ready to see. I went in and was shocked at the state of the car. There was broken glass that I sat on, on the drivers seat and all over the dashboard. There was dirt (not dust) caked all over the inside of the car. There was drips of something dark and sticky all over the center console and it was obvious it had not been vacuumed. The outside had obviously not not been washed and had thick mud on the paint. I told the sales person that I was upset about the state of the car and she told me that was not mine and it was being shipped for someone else- although the vin and car numbers were the exact same for the car I ordered. She continued to tell me I was wrong and that it was not my car and she would clean my a4 I had ordered. I ordered an a3 and there was no a4 on the lot. CarMax was hardly apologetic and have guaranteed that they will never have my business. Buyer beware is an understatement with this place. read more

Best car buying experience I've ever had! I have purchased 6 cars from dealerships and had not had pleasant experiences. I dreaded this last purchase and visited CarMax. What a different experience than all the others! First, their prices are "No haggle" so what is advertised is what you pay. The salesmen get a flat fee for each sale and it is not based on purchase price. Therefore there is no incentive for the salesman to push you into a higher priced vehicle. Once we purchased, we were out the door in 45 minutes. The contract procedure was a breeze and their warranties are in house so they are half the price of what the other dealers charge. Our salesman was Michael Klaut and he was wonderful to work with! He readily answered all our questions about each vehicle and was happy to let us drive as many cars as we wanted until we settled on the purchase. My husband and I went to this dealer looking for a used Prius, the staff was somewhat friendly but not very helpful, the sales person we got was inexperience and had little knowledge about the cars, he try to help as good as he could, it took a while for us to test drive some of the cars because the battery was dead in most of them and they had to jumped them, once we found one we liked we started the process to get it, but when my husband asked if the price could be negotiated instantly they said that there was none of that because they are a no haggle price dealer and that was that, so no matter what you are stuck with what ever price they give you. So we decided no to buy from them, our money is as good any other place any way. Very disappointed I expected better from this place because of their advertising. read more

Initially I had an amazing experience with the sales person and the manager who were on when I bought my car. After leaving with my new Ford Fusion I went to show off the car, after telling a couple people about my amazing experience they went down same day to look at cars. Two people bought vehicles the same day due to my recommendation and then another a few weeks later. You'd think I was bragging but now here I am 6 months after buying the car......so here is the new experience......I bought the car in May 2017 and got pulled over just the other day for expired tags. Well turns out they sold me a car with expired registration or no registration. The tags expired April 2017. Now come to find out another person I recommended just bought a car from there two weeks ago and her tags state they expired in June 2017. Seems a but fishy to me. When calling they brushed me off. they stated that I needed to go to DMV, ummm I think not. They have the tags for all these vehicles what are they doing with them??? Or are they just selling vehicles without no proper registration. I asked for the manager and they refused to get on the phone with me. Then when sending a request for call through there website it states someone will reach out within 2 business days.....well that was over a week ago and nothing. I do not recommend these people to anyone. But I will also be reaching out to some friends in the legal system to see what we can do to have some investigate there fraudulent business. And I will be going down to the lot and doing so research of my own and seeing how many vehicles on the lot actually don't have the proper tags on them. read more

Someone calls and will be there at 4PM sharp. "Please don't sell it to anyone. It's just what I want!" Then 4PM = no show, 5PM, 6PM - crickets. Try calling the number back & get voicemail or ignored texts. Or, how about this one. Someone comes, looks, makes a deal with you then promises "Consider it sold. Don't let anyone else take it. I'll be back in the morning with the cash." LOL This happens over and over. Once, I had a dealer in San Jose sell a truck before I got there. Note to disappointed self: Early bird gets it. Move on. They don't know sweet little you from the man in the moon. If you see a car you want then leave a deposit. They have a repair facility. Make your purchase contingent on a repair. It's your move! Carmax was a good car dealership to go through but they had some things they did not mention to me as a customer. My registration for the car was payed for with the fees of the car that i purchased. But they forgot to inform me that my car registration wasnt in their "75 day window" so i got my tags for this year 2018 that are up in June. I have to pay for new registration again because i purchased my car in February which was "out" of their 75 days window. So before purchasing make sure to ask about that. Another thing would be their "max care" plan which is about an extra 30 bucks a month on your car payment. But again they forgot to inform me that "max care" means anything mechanical wrong with the car they will fix, but not any wear tear damage. Carmax is definitely a good place to go for a car but i wished they would've told me about these things, would've made making this review much easier read more

I called CarMax to setup an appointment to come down and look at some vehicles; The appointment was on Saturday at 11:00 am. My husband works all week and this appointment was important.....we get there and were told she is not available right now....we were directed to the parking lot to look at cars on our own. We did just that and we also walked next door to the Lexus dealership...within a minute we were greeted and test drove a car within 10 minutes. After about 40 minutes my husbands phone starts ringing,,,,,its CarMax...they apologized for being late saying there current client was taking longer than they thought.... and Jolie worked with me to get me prequalified....the car had to be transferred from Modesto.. this was Monday.....by Thursday I still did not hear back about the car.....I looked at pictures and I thought I saw some burn spots on the dash....I texted her and she said she is out of town and can't get back to me for 2 days! I said that is not acceptable....have someone else check this out and get back to me. They finally did and said the car is in perfect condition.....IT TOOK 2 WEEKS to get this car to SR....or so they tell me... I called again to ask when I can test drive this car...they said I would have to wait to Monday because they didn't have the paperwork completed....how much paperwork do you need to TEST DRIVE A VEHICLE!!!!! I FOUND ANOTHER CAR IN ONE DAY! THIS WAS THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED!!!! read more

I reserved a Dodge Durango on Dec 29th and requested for it to be transferred to this carmax as I was going to buy it (I was absolutely in love with the car). I spoke to Emilio who said the car was in transit to this carmax and he would call me when it got to the dealership. He said it would only take a couple of days. I called on Jan 2nd and asked when the car would be here and they said it was on its way and they would call. I waited till today Jan 4th and still had not received a call so I called carmax and asked when the vehicle would be here. They said the could not find the transfer request or the vehicle in their database. I called Emilio and asked him what happened. He said the vehicle was sold..RIGHT OUT FROM UNDER ME..AFTER BEING PROMISED THE VEHICLE WAS ALREADY IN TRANSIT TO ME..then they proceeded to tell me they have lots of other vehicles I can come look at and suggested vehicles that were nothing like I wanted. I liked another Durango they had on their lot and it was only $500 more (had more miles and did not have AWD or a rear back up camera) and I asked if they would lower it $500 so it would be the same price.. they said they would not lower it as they are a no haggle dealership... I purchased a truck from a Fairfield Carmax in late 2015. I had specific criteria that I was looking for as far as options and they were one of the few lots that had the truck. I am a mechanic with 20 years experience. Upon inspection of the truck I found that the hood had been repainted and there were clips missing from the windshield washer hoses. The paint job was substandard but I wanted the truck anyways. Fast forward to 3/2/16, my mother and father in law were looking at a used Lexus. The salesman was very elusive as to their test drive rules which only allows for a 5 minute test drive. We asked why we couldn't take the car on a longer drive to get a feel for the car and he said for security reasons and that we might pull a gun on him. Anyways they ended up liking the car, I tried to inspect the paint on the lot but the car was very dirty. Once they bought the car and they washed it my mother in law brought the car to my house for me to pair the phone and I noticed that the hood as well as the trunk had been repainted with a very poor quality paint job. "Is this a coincidence that 2 vehicles purchased from Carmax with (Clean Carfax) have had major undocumented paint work? The main thing that I want everyone to get from this is that Carmax is apparently buying damaged cars from the auction with clean "Carfax" and then having them repaired in house. Because of this it does not get reported to "Carfax" So you are getting substandard vehicles from this company. BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!! read more
