I hate CarMax!!!! I should've learned my lesson after my last bad experience in 2015 at the LAX location. But no like a Fool, I made the BIG mistake of going to the Torrance location last week. Please don't ever deal with Natasha if you're trying to sell a leased car, she'll give you all the wrong information! We arrived at 9am, hoping to sell our car with the offer we already got from their LAX location when we realized that they open at 10am. We asked a so called "qualified" associate when and where we will be able to start the selling process and he told us that we need to wait for an hour, so we did. At 10am sharp, we came back as told. It turned out that the business office was already open after all! We didn't want to stress ourself for this, but it was only the beginning. Normally it should have taken 15-20min to complete the selling process but I guess it means 2hours to them. They told us they they were NOT able to transfer the offer to this location. My reason for purchasing a vehicle from CarMax is solely based on me being previously employed there for 7 years at this particular location. My appraisal amount was what I expected and the vehicle I purchased fit my budget. I waited longer then I anticipated but overall that experience wasn't bad at all. Now let's get to the bad and ugly! There was an after market alarm left on the vehicle which one would think would have been removed during the 125 point "inspection" do you know how annoying it was locking/unlocking the doors on my vehicle and hearing two different alarms beep on top of the after market alarm beeping when the vehicle was turned off. On top of the two alarms beeping it was affecting the unlock button when trying to enter the vehicle I had to press the unlock button 3-4 times. After being annoyed with the beeping I called and made an appointment with the service department and my husband was the one to take the vehicle in. As he is driving there he notices the vehicle is pulling to the right so he had them check that out as well. They ended up rotating the tires and a balance(I believe). All of this took place in March once they did the rotation and balance the tire pressure light started came on which I thought was odd. I've taken my car since I've had it to a local tire shop TWO times due to the tire pressure light coming on. Keep in mind I am now outside of that 30 day warranty window after those repairs were made. The first two times I take it they don't see any nails in the tires and today it comes on yet again common sense says something clearly isn't right. They remove the two rear tires and what is found TWO terribly patched tires and my first thought is how the heck were these not seen when CarMax service department performed a rotation and balance. You obviously can't patch a patch so I had to spend money out of my pocket to replace these tires that should have been replaced during the "inspection" process. It gets better!! The rear right door is coming apart as well again I call make a service appointment when I called to make the appointment I explained to the service advisor I have pictures of the issues and I can send those but he proceeds and gives me a 10 am appointment. I arrive early to my appointment and what does he do walks out with me to the car SNAPS A PICTURE and lets me know he will order the part and will call me when it gets in. My time was completely wasted seeing how I said I could send pictures of the door during our initial phone conversation. Buying a vehicle from this place has been nothing but an inconvenience and headache. Yes! I understand a used vehicle is not perfect but no way a door should be coming apart and three months into having this vehicle I am replacing rear tires. Consider revising your inspection worksheet and save people the headache and time of having issues such as these corrected prior to advertising a vehicle on the CarMax website. read more

Gatis was my sales person, Jesus was the manager and Beatriz was the business office support. All were helpful. The appraisal process for my trade in was seamless, the test drive was productive and the purchase went smooth. The entire process from end to end was about 2.5 hours and I drove away very happy with my new Lexus!!! Good prices, no pressure but all questions answered. I went on a Monday evening around 7:15PM and waited an hour before I could meet with someone to let them know I wanted to get my car appraised to sell to them, another 40 minutes before the appraisal took place. I put $9000 down payment on the car to be left with about $19000 after financing. Maxcare expires at 3 years or 100,000 miles and my car was at 59,000 miles point of sale. We took the car on a test drive and there was not problem. The ride home was hectic, we heard a swoosh noise and since it was a weekend, the service department was closed. We waited till we set an available appointment during the week to bring it in. Aside from the swoosh, car would pull to the right; an alignment problem. The A.C lights kept flashing and no cold air would release. A tire went flat during the first 3 days and ended going to just tires and purchased a brand new tire for $200. Also during the weekend the car had check brake light, check right light, check left light, and breaks made a small noise. We took a photo and SENT IT TO OUR SALES REP. We made an appointment to see the service department only for them not to duplicate some problems onsite. WE drove 16 miles from home to waste time and gas. Any how as Kirsten the consultant stated you guys bought a great car, you just have minor cosmetic imperfections, the noise is obviously coming from the tires, and thats normal, and the rest is just cosmetic imperfections that can be fixed. So the car was with them for a about a week and a half. They ordered the part from mercedes, the tech had to install the part ended up breaking the frame so they had to order the broken part, at this point i wanted to return the car but we were past our 5 day RETURN POLICY. When the car was ready, we took the car back home, another 16 miles, and the swoosh now was still there. Brought the car back, There was an obvious alignment problem that was blamed on tires, ended up replacing all tires, and said they would place silent tires so the noise would minimize. They said the car needed new brake pads in the back, not in the front, because the front ones were brand new. At this point I am questioning their inspection and technicians work. After the tires were replaced we were told that the alignment WAS off (after Kirsten the consultant insisted there was not alignment problem) and that they would take care of it. After it was "fixed" the car was brought home only to find a new problem, A KICK, the car started kicking as you started breaking. We took it upon our selves to contact mercedes and find out the 2006 ml350 series had a known defect with the camshocks and transmission yada yada yada... only to find out that im almost 30 days into this car. We brought the car back in and asked for another consultant for help, but right before this happened an hour prior to this we felt we were done with this car. We decided to get the car appraised, and the car had lost value. 2,500 to be exact. We were going to get 22500.00 and we were going to loose out on the 9000 down payment. VERY DISAPPOINTING IN THIS BAD ECONOMY. We then explained our feelings about the car and were told that we were past the the 5 day return policy and could not return the car. We explained what mercedes explained to us, and left the car there for the weekend for an available tech to look at the car on monday. As that week came by, A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM WAS DUPLICATED, along with that problem there were other little minor repairs needed. AT THIS POINT we have wasted time, mileage and gas. We have not been able to enjoy the car at all, not even a complete week. I am very disappointed at this whole situation. The most annoying part was when the first consultant would state we saved you this much money by you purchasing your max care... UM HELLO, WHY IS CARMAX SELLING CARS WITH PROBLEMS??? their answer to the inspection standard is every used car has its defects, its not a brand new car. I have bought a brand new 2005 honda civic and at its 100,000 miles it has IVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM! Ive owned a 2007 bmw 328i and never had a problem either. My wife bought a pt cruiser from carmax, very problematic car with transmission problems! MAXCARE ENDED and they turned her back on her because the car had 1000 over the maxcare mileage expiration. She had to invest 6000 out of pocket because her maxcare ended. How much more money am i suppose to invest in this mercedes purchase when my maxcare ends??? read more

I would not recommend ANYBODY to purchase a car from carmax. They are a bunch of unprofessional, young kids who don't know what the hell they are doing. They offered me a JOKE price for my trade in, said that there was frame damage and various types of damage when there wasn't. that car was checked out up, down, left, right before I brought it in so I could know what to expect. Long story short, I found the car I wanted. They told me it would be transferred to the torrance location the next day. So, I took time off work to go in and sign and pick up the car. FALSE. the car didn't come in till almost 2 days later. Time and money lost on my part. I had my dad cosign for me, hoping to get a better apr. Living in another state, they offered to fedex the paperwork to his local carmax for him to sign. HE IS IN A WHEELCHAIR AND CANNOT GET AROUND EASILY!!! So what do they do? COMPLETELY FUCK UP THE PAPERWORK WHEN IT GETS BACK!! SO the day I go to pick my car up, after I had sold my previous car, being without a vehicle, the "manager" tells me that he fucked up the paperwork and I can't have the car today. Thats when all hell broke loose. I was screaming and demanding that he fix this problem, that I should have been able to pick my car up over a week ago when I first came in, and NOW, the problem is that my dad has to go all the way back to his carmax to do paperwork all over again because of this fucking idiots mistake. They tried to slip in an extended warranty on the contract, but I caught it and make them take it off. My apr is VERY HIGH..but without a choice I had to go through and buy the car. DONSHAY LUKE reassured me that I could refinance with my company after 6 months. Today is 6 months. Guess who doesn't refinance? MY COMPANY!!!! Don't waste your time at carmax. They are a bunch of liars, incompetent idiots who will LIE LIE LIE to get what they want. The cars they have are way over priced for the years and models they have. I had high hopes for CarMax given all of the great reviews and their "125 point inspection." Sadly they have failed. I bought a 2008 RDX and even specifically asked about the brakes and tires (I was burned once before at a dealer). My sales guy assured me everything was in great condition and the brakes/tires were excellent. A month later I go to get regular service (that evidently should have been done before I bought the car) and found that both rear brakes were less than 2mm. Additionally, the filters were dirty, power steering fluid was dark, and brake fluid was mud. In all, the cost to me was $1000 - none of which was covered by the bogus extended warranty I was talked in to getting. CarMax, you clearly do not have a 125 point inspection but a knack for ripping a buyer off. So much for no hassle - this has been a big hassle and more money than I have laying around! read more

Get comfortable, this is long. I own a 2000 suburban and it was time for a change. I found another one on the Carmax website. It was 45 miles away in Torrance but it was what I wanted. Drove down and checked it out. Salesman was nice and sat down with in 5 minutes. My family and I looked the truck over and we test drove it while they appraised the old suburban. It had a few minor issues but we liked the truck. We were told that we could take the truck to the Carmax by our house to have the small issues resolved, cool. We sat down and worked a deal without a trade since they only wanted to give us 2k for the trade. We were told that if we didn't like the truck for any reason we could return it with in 5 days no questions. We signed the contract and out the door in 2 hours and 45 minutes. That was the easy part. That night we went to dinner. Bang, there is a clunk noise when leaving the light. I had a u joint go out in my old Suburban so I know the noise. No problem, I'm going to the Duarte store tomorrow for the small issues anyway. I called the service department on the Friday morning and was told I could bring it in. I drove down 25 minutes in traffic to be told they were booked. I could leave the Suburban and take a four door car or bring it back on Monday. My wife brought it back on Monday and told them the issues. Got a call later that they could not hear the noise. I drove up there from work (lost time) to reproduce the noise. I drove the truck 100 feet and it made the noise. Tech will check out the u joint. I received a call from the service writer the next day with information that the noise is in the transmission. They are having their "specialist" look at it. They have a guy from Aamco transmission "inspect" it Wednesday. He says the noise is in the rear end and asks to have the rear end fluid level checked. They call me back and the fluid is fine. They want to send the truck to Aamco 25 miles away. I ask if they can send it to Chevrolet since they may know what the problem is. No problem we can do that is the answer. The next day the call comes that they only work with this Aamco place for transmissions. What happened to no problem going to Chevrolet? This is Thursday morning, Friday morning still no pick up so I tell them that I will pick it up and take it to someone I know and trust. I will pay out of pocket for the diagnosis but I know it will be right. They had the truck for 5 days without a resolution. I called my salesman to have him look for another truck since I may not keep this truck. You have a 5 day return policy when you buy there. He sent me some sites but they were the incorrect vehicle. Didn't he just sell me the truck and sit for almost 3hours discussing the truck I wanted? He said he will keep looking. During this week of wonderful communication, we get a call from Torrance that our contract paperwork was printed out of line and we needed to sign the contracts again. Explained that we do not even have the truck, it has been in the shop. We are told the 5 day grace period is on hold while the truck is in the shop. Great, they FedEx the new paperwork with tags where to sign. I sign it and send it back in the envelope provided. Well it has been another week. I have not been able to take additional time off of work yet to have the truck inspected. I have not received any calls from my salesman with options and now I get a FedEx box on my door. It is the SAME CONTRACT back with a so sorry letter, we forgot to have you sign this line. Of course no one signs the letter or leaves a phone number to contact them. I call the Torrance store and ask for a sales manger. I am put on hold for 12 minutes and then transferred to a generic voice mail. Really!!! I called back and spoke to a manager, I think. He could not get me any answers but will have his boss call me tomorrow. I thought he was a manager. He had the salesman call me back. He was kind enough to give me the Corporate Customer Service number 800-519-1511 in Virginia hours 8:30am to 8:30 eastern standard time. (just in case you need it). I will continue to chase this for a resolution. I will update once there are answers. Sales experience: 4 star and dropping Finance experience: 2 star and dropping Service experience: can I put a 0 since they didn't do anything but waste my time? Do not waste your time going to CarMax to trade-in or sell your car. 1) They lied - they stated body work had been done to the front and back driver and passenger doors of our car. This car was purchased certified, pre-owned from a high-end dealership and the carfax is clean as a whistle. If all doors had somehow managed to be in an accident, the car would have been totaled. I don't know why they bothered with such a ridiculous claim, but this was their basis for low-balling us. 2) The offer was $7,500.00 less than BlueBook value. Why would anyone trade-in or sell for so much less than the market value? 3) Even with an appointment, we waited an hour and 15 minutes to receive our quote. Car Max in Torrance is awful. I would give them negative stars if able. Their statement/commercial appraisal are fast is so not true. I called and made an appointment expecting to give name, make, model, mileage...basic questions. I was asking why I'm selling the car, how much am I expecting. I arrived the person I was told to ask for 'wasn't available' then like Used Car lot the salespersons fell over themselves. I'm now sitting in a cubical waiting with a sales person who ask me questions then started asking me about also buying a car with CarMax. I told him I'm here for an appraisal only! After 30 minutes of non relate appraisal. The appraisal is complete then I was hastily usher to the business office. I told them I will take sometime to decide (7 day appraisal). I came back with my payoff information and was prepared to sale when I receive can't sell on Saturday my Financial lender was closed. CarMax needed the payoff via speaking DIRECTLY to someone. Print out, computer payoff info not sufficient. Now on the third trip I knew I will write a check for the different. They had signs about 'return checks fee'. I now learned after I was told to write the check for difference xxxx.xx gave the check to business office to find out checks can be written over a 250.00 OMG really. I'm sure down payments are for over that. I then told them my bank branch is closed (6pm went after work to CarMax). I called my bank and luckily my daily limit on debit card was over the amount so I used it to complete. Three visits, customer service, salesperson, business office (twice)... I see a few of negative reviews and that makes me sad. I found my experience there to be great. First off. I have some credit blemishes, and my first experience at Garden Grove Hyundai ("we finance everyone!") earlier this week left a lot to be desired. Yeah, I know I'm not going to get a great interest rate, I know I'm not going to get some super fancy car... but I still deserve to not be treated as though you are doing me some massive favor by offering to get me into a used Accent for $370/mo. That's right. An Accent. Used. For almost $400 a month. Which is exactly what Garden Grove Hyundai and their ridiculous 30% interest rate were doing, after "selling" me on an Elantra and then saying it's too expensive. And the subtly veiled threats that I wasn't going to do better anywhere else... I guess they capitalize on that fear. Thankfully, I told them politely I'd think about it, in order to weigh my options. I was semi-prepared to go back with my tail tucked between my legs. But then, I went to Carmax. Carmax made my car-buying experience downright pleasurable. Easy. Awesome. My friend recommended them after one of his friends had a great experience there. I knew they had a good reputation - which made me think that I would never get approved there. But figuring I had nothing to lose other than $400 for a used Accent, I called them up yesterday after finding a comparable Elantra on their website to the one I ended up liking at Garden Grove Hyundai. For $2,000 less. I spoke with Janet, who was very sweet and reassuring. I told her my situation, and my credit score, and I asked if it was possible to work with that before going through the whole process? She said that they work with multiple lenders, and that she was pretty sure they could - and if not, the lenders would at least let us know why. 10 minutes later, I was approved for the car I wanted - at 70 bucks less a month than the less expensive car GGH had tried to get me into. I went in to test drive it. Still liked it. Janet was busy with another customer when I got there, but Rosalina greeted me right away when I went in, and took me on the test drive. After, she showed me a couple of other vehicles. Even though I was already pretty sold on the Elantra, she wanted to make sure that I had seen everything within my price range. From there, it was smooth sailing - I just gave them a copy of my paystub, got my proof of insurance (which they also helped with by referring me to an agent who gave me a great competitive rate) and all in all, the entire process from the time I walked through the door to the time I drove off took about 2 hours (I got there at 8p, and they close at 9p, and never ONCE did they make me feel like I was keeping them, which they easily could have done since I was a "sure thing." Having worked retail, I can't say that I've ever been that good about being kept an hour after closing by a customer - so that's awesome.) Even though Janet's customer kept her the entire time I was there, she still made it a point to come over and introduce herself as I was signing the paperwork. Having only bought new cars in the past, I was leery of buying a used car from a dealer but I am surprised to admit that my CarMax experience was excellent. I visited two different CarMax sites (LAX) having an equally pleasant experience at both, but bought my Audi A4 from Torrance because I enjoyed working with them. There was zero pressure during the shopping and test drives, and they didn't try to sell me a bunch of stuff I didn't need. I paid cash and I was in and out of there in less than an hour. No bickering, no quibbling- the car was well rices and in MINT condition. My only complaint is that I notice that CarMax tends to put cheap off-brand new tires on their cars, so check those wheels carefully. Now that I've had my car for 6 mos, I took it in for it's first service appointment, and found that process just as convenient and simple as the rest of the experience. CarMax is doing something right. They either train their employees really well, or only hire people that fit their no pressure/great service philosophy. I would definitely buy again with confidence from CarMax. read more

The Good: The salesman was nice. The Bad & the Ugly: The appraiser was dishonest. The appraiser tried to claim there were clamp marks on the frame from a previous rear end collision. All that was replaced was the rear bumper from North Ranch Bodycraft & Glass in Thousand Oaks. It was a high end body shop. They don't do things half ass. The appraiser tried to claim there was frame damage from a minor collision just to bring the price down to ridiculous levels. Make no mistake about it, there was absolutely NO frame damage. The car, a 2004 Acura, was in good condition, mechanically sound and drove nice and straight. I should have at least received the Edmunds trade in value at $5800, but because of the appraiser's dishonesty, they offered $3,300. I ended up taking it back to BMW where they gave me $4,000. Still short of what it the true trade in value was, but I already bought another car. At least BMW just low balled me and they weren't dishonest about it. I wish I would have just sold the car privately for $6,500 and skipped the trade in ideas. Don't buy into the Carmax hype. It is actually WORSE than trading your car in at the dealer. Conclusion: It's one thing to low ball someone. That's just business and I can accept that. It's the dishonesty that really bugs me. I didn't fall for it because I knew my car. Here's the deal. Their cars are in pretty good condition and their prices are good but buyer beware, DO NOT let them talk you into purchasing the warranty. My biggest complaint with CarMax is that I foolishly purchased the extended warranty on my car. HUGE mistake. The warranty cost me almost an additional $1800. I didn't realize until I brought my car in for service that every time I bring the car in there would be a $250.00 deductible charge. I just paid over $250.00 for a $40.00 repair.This is a complete and total ripoff and a scam. I will never go to CarMax for service again and I'm looking into finding out what I can do about this situation. This was never explained to me when I purchased the car ( I have a witness that was there with me at the time) I would never have agreed to the warranty if I knew about this. read more

BUYER BEWARE!!!!!! Purchased a car there on Sunday. Brought to mechanic I trust. He discovered brakes were low--3 and 4 mm, and one tire significantly worn more than other three. Brought it in to Burbank Carmax. They basically called my mechanic a liar and said brakes were 5 & 6. My guy had no reason to lie. I've worked with him for 20 years. He wasn't going to get the job. Carmax told me "tough". Same with tire. They said the tire was within specs so tough--even though worn more than others. Then, when I went to get my financing from credit union, original deal was cancelled since Carmax overcharged me for the car. The manager said it happens a lot with Carmax. It cost me an additional $1250 for my down payment to get the loan!!!! Not at all happy--actually livid about the brakes. I would return car except that it's exactly what I've been looking for, and I didn't want to start over. But I will as of now, never use Carmax again, and will share my opinion anywhere I can, starting with Yelp. read more

Terrible terrible terrible experience!! I bought a Porsche for 50k, shipped it from another location. Asked them to make sure it was no dents and excessive use on interior. They garanteed that this was not going to be the case. Car arrives late, scratches and interior was bad. When I picked up the car it was not washed - had to drive away in a dirty car!! Avoid this place... if you want to be waited on by one of the cast from the land of misfit toys go ahead and waste some of your time here. I walked in on a Saturday morning to get a vehicle appraised for sale to them. They had no clue why I was there but lucky for me a group of about 7 or 8 guys stood in a single cube grabassing while watching a monitor in the cube.. great first impression. If your goal is to be the smartest person in the room then by all means waste some of your time here. I have dealt with carmax (different location) in the past and the experience was tolerable and did not necessitate this type of response. I will let anyone who asks know just how ridiculous this experience was. Even once I let the clown at the front desk know why I was there the response was incredibly indifferent. Most people can get a sense of what someone is all about right from the beginning... let me give you my initial impression of this sales team: be thankful this carmax hires this types of unqualified extremely unmotivated person, at least now you know you dont need to travel all over LA or even the south bay to find a group this unqualified to be in the public eye, just head over to the Torrance Carmax.. it can be the one stop shop for unmotivated, uninterested sales people that will love to ignore potential sales... but hey looking at opportunity might require effort and pretty sure that is beyond the cognitive capability of this crew. In the end the price they offered for my vehicle was below market place, which I anticipated, but that is how that portion of the used car world operates. I am not upset with their offer, but I assure you their unprofessional demeanor and overall lack of regard for customer service is why we will not even pretend to be interested in going back to CarMax Torrance again. read more
