Hands down, the best Italian food I've had in Vancouver since Amarcord closed. Vancouver food is often over the top: swimming in oil, trying way too hard to add excitement with fusion of unexpected ingredients, spending money on trendy decor instead of delicious food. We were in Vancouver for a few days. We were looking for Italian food. Amazing food and wonderful servers! Highly recommend the restaurant!

This was my first visit to Carmelo's. I t came highly recommended and I was not disappointed. The room is very comfortable with impressionist prints and paintings lining the walls. We arrived early and the restaurant started filling up quickly. One of the specials was lobster ravioli with dungeness crab and shrimp, some of my favourite things all on one plate. We ordered it as an app along with calamari and both dishes were amazing starters. Moving on to main courses I had the veal marsala which was rich but not too heavy. The Dessert menu offers lots of tempting options including one of my favourites, crème brûlée which was the best part of the meal. The texture was absolutely perfect and it was flavoured with a hint of citrus which was a great accent. Our server, Sarah, was very friendly and attentive. I look forward to eating at Carmelo's again soon! read more

Really disappointing because we had heard good reviews and the food tasted great but our experience was completely ruined by the horrible service we received. My bf and I sat for about 15 min with empty plates before a waitress even came over to ask us how our food was and clear our dishes. We were also never served our appetizer. When we asked the waitress about it after we had already finished our meals, it took another 15 min to come out. By then we were ready to leave, so we had to ask for it to go. We thought they'd take the forgotten appetizer off the bill (what most restaurants would do), but nope we had to pay for it. We wouldn't have had a problem with that if we had at least gotten decent service. Every time we attempted to get the waitresses attention, it was as though she was purposely ignoring us. The restaurant was not busy at all and the other tables seemed to be getting lots more attention from the waitresses than we were. Maybe it's because we were quite a bit younger (mid 20's) than all the other customers in there but it was pretty clear they really didn't care about our business. WON'T BE GOING BACK. read more

1. Food was tasteless and over salted both dishes we ordered and even the replacement food. No Gnocci on menus!!! I thought it was an Italian joint? 2. When you sit down you get a glass of water...but heaven forbit that you try and get another one...they too busy for that.. 3. Oh yes and that goes for wine too...only one glass is permitted...and if you look pissed off they will offer you a second one when you table is clear ... 4. Oh and then to add insult to injury you get presented with the full bill...the manger hands you the CR card machine and walks off...leaving you to comple the transaction..remove the receipts etc etc... Do you not know you never let those machines out of sight..It is a security risk to do that...AND it is a curtesy to your guests that you stay and complet the transaction... Another really good experience - efficient reservation, friendly welcome, good service, great food, sensibly priced. What else do you want from a local Trattoria? Staff were really good with our 4 year old - even commenting on how impressed they were devouring her Linguine Vongole. Only watch-out is don't go on a really warm evening - no a/c or airflow makes it pretty oppressive. read more

You should try their tortellini,it's always impossible to get descent ( if any) stuffed pasta at any Italian restaurant in vancouver ,Carmelos Tortelini ,I ordered worth tomato sauce ,was great. The buffalo mozzarella with tomatoes is well balanced. I had with pizza bread. Service was good and attentive . Will return for sure. read more

We won't voluntarily eat here again; the food certainly did not justify the expense and the atmosphere of slightly subdued tension between management and staff didn't help to make our dry-dry-dry meat selections go down any easier. Nor did the 10$ glass of prosecco, alas. It's possible, if you avoid anything that will suffer under a heat lamp, that you might fare better. Definitely avoid the pork chops and Tuscan chicken. Mother's veal scaloppini fared better (sauced) and she had no complaints (and, after all, she was treating us, so we didn't want to alert her to our dismay). As for the general atmosphere: I sat directly across from the hub where staff and management organized food and bar orders, just outside the kitchen. While there was no outright hostility, the sense of nervous tension seemed to simmer quietly below the surface; not a single smile passed between staff and management for the entire duration of my meal. Not something I would normally monitor, or even be aware of, but for the increasing sense that something was amiss. The service could not really be faulted, but it lacked human warmth. I'd say 'chill out', but there's already something chilly happening here. Add this to disappointing food and the price point. read more

Home cooked Italian style meals that just scream delicious with every bite you take. The pizza is thin crispy and authentic italian tasting. The beef tenderloin with arugula salad is tender, juicy, and perfectly cooked. The pastas are mouth watering they are not your average buttery mess they are delicately made with the love and care that you would expect from a home cooked italian meal. Service was very good during our visit with the waiters always being on top of things. This is my favourite Italian restaurant in Van City and it should wear these 5 stars i am giving it with pride because it deserves them. Tips: Ask for the Fettuccine Buongustaio al oleo instead of the cream based sauce, Any pizza is extremely good, and try the Filet Mignon with arugula salad. read more

Loved everything about it except the ambeince... the vibe was a bit cramped our neighbours were looking at our food and felt too close. I knnow this is common for italian joints especially ones in van but that was our only complaint. The food was geat prices were high but not too bad. pastas are 15 ish and entress were pricey around 25-35. wine list was decent but the wine I ordered was not in stock. The food was terrific and the service excellent! We started off with a Cesar Salad and Clam Chower and both were as expected, nothing out of the ordinary. My husband ate cannoli and I ate veal, they were both served hot and delicious! So the entrees is what to go for! If you can squeeze in dessert, they advertised that they have a pastry chef who comes in and makes the dessert, so of course we had to try one. It was not to disappoint so go get some dessert before you leave. The place is very busy starting on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights so reservations are highly recommended! The only thing I would have to say is that it's very cramped. They pack in the tables and chairs so there is very little wiggle room between you and your neighbors. So privacy is out of the question, but if you are looking for some good food than this is the place! read more

We stumbled into Carmelo's quite by accident due to the intended restaurant being closed that night. A friendly local gave it a thumbs up so we ventured across the busy Marine Drive and were very pleased with both the service and the quality of the food. After a brief wait for a table, I had a delightful linguini alle vongole, and my wife had tortellini. Both were excellent and comparable favorably to similar dishes eaten in Italy or stateside. It probably did not hurt that we were nearing the end of a long day of flying and then driving from Seatac with a couple hours yet to get to Whistler, but I recommend the food, the service and the ambiance. read more

A nice neighborhood Italian bistro with good food and reasonable prices (though not entirely inexpensive.) The server who pours the water could ease up a little, it seemed like she was topping up our glasses by millimetres every two minutes, which was a bit disruptive to the flow of the conversation around the table. We've eaten here a lot over the years and have never been disappointed. Their Veal Masala is the best that we've had ANYWHERE - from fancy cruise ship restaurants etc., nothing has ever come up to Carmelo's standard. All their meals are very good I would certainly recommend making a reservation as they are always busy -- because it's great food and fair value. ( Ask the price of the special before you order it as sometimes the price seems a little "up there" on the specials). Service is always good, relaxed and often fun without being in your face. Without a doubt Carmelo's is our favourite 'go to' restaurant in West Van - we're never disappointed. read more

I took my daughter on her birthday to Carmelo's few nights ago to have a nice dinner but instead we had the most terrible night. After 10 minutes of our arrival we ordered our food and drinks at the same time. Our drinks were served 10 minutes after we ordered immediately they put our food in front of us. We ordered Picatta Di Vitello (Milk Fed Veal Scaloppine with Lemon Sauce). With the speed that our plates were served, I wonder how long ago they were prepared! The veal was chewy, floating on in oil. They did not give it time even to pretend that they made it fresh. We could not eat our food and in order not to ruin the night, I did not say anything. We were there less than 25 minutes and I will never go back since it was not the first time I had bad food in this restaurant. My recommendation.... go anywhere else but Carmelo's. read more

To sum it up, very disappointing. After an afternoon at John Lawson Park with the kids we thought we would try a local eatery for take out on our way home. It would have ended off a great day. I read some reviews for nearby pizza places and the reviews and pictures were enough enticement to try Carmello's. Would it be a new favourite? The start of a tradition -- park with the kids and then Carmello's for refuelling? In a word, no. I planned on pizza and something to go with it. After talking to the owner on the phone, he highly recommended the spaghetti bolognese and the Caesar salad. I ordered both along with the marguerita pizza. They said it would be ready in 20min but I asked them to time it to be picked up in 30min, "sure, no problem". When I picked up the order it seemed rather light for the $44 it cost me. When we opened the packages I was surprised at what I saw. A marginally warm pizza, very basic looking, thin crust, with a crust that looked strangely too circular and the consistency of cardboard -- a mass produced product, perhaps. The spaghetti looked a mess. I have no doubt it had a homemade sauce its just that it wasn't very good. And for $18, the priciest of the items I ordered, it was a massive let down. The only redeeming item ordered was the Caesar salad. It had a creamy and garlicky dressing. They generously provided 3 stale store bought croutons and topped it with some shaved Parmesan. We would love to find a favourite place near the area. Our search continues. read more

Service was barely satisfactory; definitely not as great as the reviews endorse it to be. One may typically find better service at the foodcourt in Park Royal. The good reviews are only indicative of the fact the restaurant seems to be sustained through a niche of insiders that look upon the restaurant too leniently. I took my adult daughter out for a birthday dinner at 8:30ish. The restaurant was very busy, and seemed short staffed, the manager had to wait on us, taking our wine order. After reading the menu, we both decided we wanted to order the same pizza, and as I didn't want to butcher the Italian name, I pointed to the pizza on the menu. The manager said the name for us, and commented that the lamb sausage came from Granville Island. Later the manager brought over spoons to the table and left. My daughter and I looked at each other, and then she said he must think we want pasta. She followed him to the kitchen area, to make sure he knew we had ordered pizza and sure enough they were making pasta for us. She didn't want to make a big deal of it, and said we would have the pasta instead. People do make mistakes. What I found annoying is that we never saw the manager again. He did not come over to the table to apologize and to make sure we were enjoying the dinner. We did not have an appetizer, planning instead on ordering desserts which would have complimented her birthday. We left instead of getting one. read more

My last few visits to Carmelo's have disappointed. Something has changed and I think I have gone for the last time. The pizza used to be great. It is still good, but not as good as before when they had more toppings on the pizza. What really disappointed was the chocolate lava cake. It used to be bigger and filled with oozing chocolate. Each person in my party of 4 would get one. The last couple times it has been dry, no oozing chocolate, and definitely smaller. I commented to our waitress that we were disappointed and was told by her that she thinks they need to change the name of it on the menu. Really? I think what needs to be done is to make it correctly. At $9.50 each, I expect a lava cake... like how it was once made. It is time to take my business elsewhere. I hope they got that message when I didn't leave a tip (and I always leave a tip). In business, the point is to keep your customers coming back. I think Carmelo's is resting on their laurels. read more
