Came here for lunch while on our NYC spring break. This is our 2nd time dining at a Carnegie Diner. Our first was near Central Park. The restaurant was busy as we entered. We were greeted right away and our name and number of people written down. The hostess told us about a 15 minute wait. There was another group ahead of us. While waiting we had a view of the pastries and sandwiches that was displayed at the to go counter. After 5 minutes, we were lead to our booth. After sitting down for a few minutes, water was poured into our awaiting cups. Our waitress greeted us a few minutes later and took our drink order. When she came back, we ordered. My husband got the Tuna Sandwich that came with fries and a side salad. I opted for the Triple Decker with turkey, bacon and avocado, which also came with fries and side salad. Our little one got her fries and bacon. Overall, we all enjoyed our meals. Loved the bread they used for my sandwich. It was so tall, it was hard getting one bite of everything so I told multiple bites. It was so good!! Would definitely come back to try other items. read more

The food's good, and you should eat it. The pancakes in particular are winners. And it's a rare thing these days, but you get actual maple syrup (the bottle's tiny, but it's real). Service is the slacker here. You can't be in a hurry, and you probably also shouldn't expect them to get the details right. We had at least three specialists stopping by...one to grab waters, one to take the order, one to ask about coffee, etc. Thing is, it was like a crazy game of telephone. Messages didn't make it down the line. I ordered the pancakes without whipped cream; I ended up with whipped cream. Coffee refills never happened. Additional syrup was late (and when it arrived, it wasn't the real thing--guess we only get one bottle of the good stuff). Returned to the brand new Carnegie Diner & Cafe to enjoy breakfast at 5:00 PM. :-) I will always appreciate the large portions, the well lit interior, the clean sitting areas, and the celebrity wall frames that surround everyone. The entrees were: Classic French Toast and, just like my previous visit, I ordered the Californian Omelette (avocado, mushroom, tomato, pepper-jack cheese). The French Toast was large enough to where a to-go bag was requested. However, my Californian Omelette was totally consumed and thoroughly enjoyed. I was really blown away with how flavorful the food was. We had a reservation and the service was extremely fast. We already had our food and had ate half of it before the coffee even had a chance to cool down. The powerhouse omelet is better than the symphony breakfast. The place to go for pastrami. First time at Carnegie, but have been wanting to try for ages. Came brunch time on a Sunday. The speed at which we were sat was unfortunately not paralleled in the service, but our server was really nice and once we got our food orders in, our meals came out quickly. A picture is worth 1000 bites if you know what I mean. My Wowstrami was worth every penny and the massive amounts of pastrami on rye was SO good. The pastrami was tender, not too fatty and there was SO much of it. The side salad was quite good and cut through the heavy meat meal. Good pickle and nice slaw. My dining companions had the regular pastrami and the eggstrami, and everyone left full and happy. Coffee was quite good and bottomless for drip, which is always appreciated. We had dinner at Carnegie Diner & Cafe on a Monday night--the week after Christmas--with a 5pm reservation, and the place was packed. A reservation was absolutely necessary. We chose this spot mainly because it was close to the Rockefeller Christmas Tree and was listed as kid-friendly with a kids menu. Our party was six people, including a 2-year-old and a 6-year-old. After checking in, we were seated pretty promptly, and the hostess was very friendly, which was a nice start. I wish I had more glowing things to say, but overall the experience was just... okay. Our waitress was attentive early on, but service slipped toward the end of the meal. We waited a good 10 minutes for the check, which felt long--especially with kids. The food also came out in sections, and oddly, my 6-year-old received her buttered noodles last, which was surprising for a kids meal. Food-wise, everything ranged from decent to forgettable. I had the pastrami sandwich and Brussels sprouts, both of which were good. My dad enjoyed his Columbus Circle burger, and my sister-in-law liked her chicken sandwich. My wife's chicken BLT was very large, but unfortunately pretty bland. Nothing was bad, but nothing really stood out either--especially for NYC. One other note: the restroom situation is strange. For such a large restaurant, there are only four single-stall, unisex bathrooms, which led to a long line. Not ideal, especially when dining with kids. Overall, it's fine. I wouldn't discourage someone from eating here, and I wouldn't mind returning if it were convenient--but it's not a place I'd go out of my way to recommend or seek out again. read more

After just seeing the tree at Rockefeller Center, we went here as I had reserved a table but when e got there, found it was another location that incorrectly had this intersection. They were so kind & got us seated in 5 minutes anyway. All 4 of us loved the food & drinks. It was busy & lit for holiday season. But our table was peaceful & heated, servers were polite & super efficient. The Burger was great, as well as spinach pie, salad w/ house dressing, chicken sandwich... but spaghetti carbonara was the big winner. Almost confused this place with the iconic Carnegie Deli when searching for a place to have lunch, but that place in Madison Square closed down in 2016. Anyhow, Carnegie Diner & Cafe offers a brightly lit, high ceiling, open ambiance, which is hard to find in New York City, and though a tourist trap, it was also an appreciated respite from the wind and cold in late December. We ordered the following: Calamari $16 Harder flakes breading, small portion, wouldn't recommend Pastrami Sandwich $24 & Fries $4 Really plain, just bread and pastrami with a side of pickles and cabbage, wouldn't recommend Carbonara $25 Good, but heavy and swimming in cream Kids fried mozzarella sticks (5 count) $10 This was the table favorite Kids buttered spaghetti $11 Big portion Kids Mac and cheese $9 Good, but prepared more like cheese soup with macaroni Our service was kind of a mess because they were so busy, essentially bringing out one or two dishes at a time, and I kid you not, in 10-15min intervals. It made for an awkward meal experience, as we watched that one person eat until the next dish came out. First was the kids mozzarella which we all picked at, then the pastrami with fries and calamari came together, that the rest of the table picked at as well, then the carbonara, 10min later, the buttered pasta, then 10min later the server checked on us and we let her know we didn't receive the kids Mac and cheese, so another 10m later, it was brought out. Our daughter didn't eat it bc she was eating off of the rest of the dishes and everyone was pretty much done eating at this point. Auto 20% tip, which is fine because our server took our order from our seated table, was serving multiple dishes (though scattered), and our drinks were filled twice, which is more service than anything else these days that ask for tip. read more

Now , let's talk baked items. The 24 layer chocolate cake is absolutely worth the calories. Plan to share it with the table. Try the grilled Salmon or one of the giant sandwiches. The later is fair game for frugal sharing. The service is excellent. We had some problems with one of our dishes and the staff and manager took amazing care of us. I had high hopes for this restaurant that just opened three weeks ago said it's Carnegie 's diner and deli, but it really has nothing to do with the old Carnegie OK we still wanted to give it a try. I had a tuna fish sandwich came with french fries and a salad. The tuna fish had too much mayonnaise Not like I expected probably added more mayonnaise so they didn't have to add more tuna not like the old days when you got a big large sandwich then I asked if I could have lettuce and tomato. She said it's an extra charge of $1.50. I said OK not that I was happy about that cause I've had many tuna salad sandwiches and I always come to lettuce and tomato. Then the bill comes and she charged me $1.50 for the lettuce and $1.50 for the tomato really that is really low for extra money. We also had a cupcake which was good. The waitress was OK when I brought it to her attention, she said that's how much they charge. I asked for the manager and the manager did take it off and rightfully so there are so many delis in this city most of them even when they're not named delis have really good sandwiches so make sure you know that the storefront is pretty. The seating is great Sorry they're messing up on these things that are really major when it comes to repeat visitors, I come back a lot to New York. This is a place. We had a wonderful brunch at the Carnegie Deli before catching a broadway matinee. Our server was very nice and the food was classic New York deli, (if your from out of town) and a must do.
