I was expecting that the staff would be more hands on since no one was there, but instead they were standing around and talking to each other. The bathroom also smells bad. The food is eh. Nothing special about it. Since they didn't have the 24 layer cake, I got the mini version instead per the waitress suggestion. We had a disastrous experience at Carnegie Diner. It wasn't the first time we had eaten there, but this time when we went nothing went right. I understand this happens sometimes, but this experience was uniquely bad in our experience and the staff did not recover well from their mistakes. First, our server ignored us when we said we were ready to order -- we literally said we were ready and he walked away, not returning for 10 plus minutes. When we told him about his mistake, he thought it was funny and laughed at us. Maybe it was, to him, but it sure wasn't to us. Then, to make things worse, half of our order didn't even show up and they then proceeded to ignore us, leaving us confused and feeling like we had been gaslit. Eventually, they tried to make it right by comping the missing food, but their first offer only comped half of what we were missing. I literally cannot fathom what happened to one of our missing orders: We had no plate or anything, but they never told us anything about it and even presented us with a check asking us to pay for it. Our child was extremely disappointed that his dish, which he was excited to try, never arrived and he felt they ignored him personally. We ended up abandoning our meal and leaving early, very disappointed. We will not be back. I cannot recommend this restaurant if they don't know the very basics of taking an order, making sure it gets to you, and correcting it when they go wrong. read more

Went for Mother's Day I had a reservation for 3pm. Got sat down at 3:10pm. Waited for our server to come to our table, we had no water, no utensils, just sitting there for about 15 mins. People seated after us were getting there orders taken and were being helped. I went over to hostess to let her know, no one has come over. She was nice, and understanding. Couple mins later the old lady waitress came over with an attitude and literally said what do you want to order. She was very aggressive and rude. We just got up and left. I'm not sure if she is a mom who was upset about working on Mother's Day, but I never experience a server being so rude. It almost felt like it was personal. Me and some friends came for brunch this morning. Before I speak on the food, I just wanna say; the whole staff was so kind, friendly and accommodating. You can tell the staff all are super helpful of each other and the manager even came by to check how the service was. The food was moreso where it was hit or miss, especially for the prices. Absolutely no complaints about the servers! I really liked my Bee-hind mocktail as I don't drink much. All my friends got mimosas, which have a lot of pulp. No complaints there either, might not be the vibe if you aren't a pulp fan because they're definitely HIGH pulp. Our iced mochas were not very strong in flavor, would definitely skip those. The spinach pie was very flaky but I was not a huge fan of the flavor of the filling. The half chicken was also dry imo. My partner liked their pastrami sandwich, they wish they asked for mustard for it. I would skip the house salad that comes with most entrees, its just dressed spring mix. Just sub for their fries or onion rings, both of them were nice and crispy; I love when places do beer batter. My fries came with feta cubes which was a nice addition! I always forget how big portions are when I come back to the suburbs. Food quality is good, large portions, and a good selection of anything you could probably think you want for brunch, whether that's pancakes, waffles, fried chicken, steak or a sandwich. The decor is reasonably interesting and I think is trying to replicate Carnegie Hall, with mostly just generic modern renovations. Either way can't take a knock on that. Good place to be. read more

It was pretty slow for a Saturday night so there was a lot of empty seats. We were two people and asked for a booth of which 3 of the 4 were empty. The host said they were only for reservations. Ok. So we sat in the back and the server was new. Going to a table, asking for a drink order, going to get it and then coming back with the drinks. She then went to the next table and did the same thing. We had to get to a movie and she hadn't even greeted us yet. So I asked to seated up front. On the way we passed a couple that had gotten seated in a booth and I asked them if they had a reservation and they said no, that they had asked for the seats. Great to be lied to. Anyway, moving on. The new server was more prompt and was able to take care of multiple tables and came over and said hello. Very nice. Ordered the avocado salad with salmon and it was good. Changed to ranch dressing. My companion had the vegan meatball sandwich and said it as good. Only thing was that it had pieces of avocado where the chef had cut the sandwich in half. So must of made my avocado salad and then used the same knife to cut the sandwich. Wonder what other cross contamination there is. Awesome restaurant - food is great and top level service! This was our first visit to Carnegie Diner and we were not disappointed. The Carbonara is delicious! The sauce is very tasty and the bacon in it really pumps up the overall flavor. The side salad is a greens mix with a good balsamic dressing. Hubby and I shared a Waffle for dessert. We both said it's the best waffle we have ever had! It was fluffy with just the right amount of crispiness. We had ours with the house Maple Syrup that was delicious. But the Waffle comes with real whipped cream that was heavenly!!! Loved the Baklava! Got it to go for later and I can't leave it alone. It has so much flavor and a great portion! Terrific manager - Jason stops by each table to check on everyone and ensure you are happy. Restaurant is beautiful, clean and comfortable! The booth was extremely comfortable. I went in the middle of the day and ordered an avocado toast with over medium eggs and hash browns on the side. The avocado toast was okay; however, I found the hash browns to be warm and just the right amount of cooked. Quality has gone way down since they opened. Had several disappointing visits and decided to try one last time this morning for breakfast. Ordered an omelette and husband got steak and eggs. The hash browns were an inedible pile of sad soggy oily potatoes. Toast was cold. Omelette was overcooked with 3 slices of avocado. I complained about the potatoes to the waiter and nothing was done. No visit from the manager, offer to get something else, or compensation in any way. For the prices this place charges they could make sure the food is excellent. They also had no muffins which was what my toddler wanted. With the lack of diners in the area I really had high hopes for this one but won't be back unless they turn themselves around. read more

We love Carnegie but I wanted to give them this review to help them improve. We came in at 0930 on a Saturday, and were seated immediately. It was not packed. Our typical experience is they are very accommodating and that service and quality are exceptional. Today, my daughter asked them for a simple off menu item (a sandwich), which they refused to make. Not a big deal but odd. Our food took over twenty minutes to come out, which is about twice our typical experience at Carnegie, and long for any restaurant especially when not full. When we asked the server about the situation the response was somewhat dismissive and there was a general feeling of a lack of care. The manager came over to explain (not apologize) that our wait was to be expected because of quality, and offered to help us out by bringing us some water, and a free dessert, and they forgot both. I'm sure Carnegie will improve, because they've got a great thing going and Vienna is an amazing place to grow a generational business. read more

Probably both. with patrons only at one other table besides ours, it took 45+ minutes to get our food. 2 orders of lentil soup-which is simmering away in a pot in the kitchen, and 2 orders of pancakes-kinda what they are known for. We only received our food after we inquired about it. Had the staff explained to us: hey we are short staffed so it may be a bit of a wait to get your food out- it would have not been an issue. There was NO communication. When the food was brought out, the main server was rude/snarky. They did not come back to ask how the meal was or ask if anyone wanted more coffee. I get that short staffing can affect service but the lack of communication added to the poor experience. The vibe of the place was- have a seat, we will be with you when we feel like it. Carnegie Diner replaced Yellow Diner, which was only open for a few months. It had a large fanbase, excited for its arrival, and I finally was able to get the opportunity to try it out. I decided to go when it was about 95 degrees outside on a Saturday, and had about a 20 minute wait for a party of 2 in the afternoon. Not too bad. There is a bit of a wait for food after ordering, but this place was crowded and the staff were super helpful. Since it was hot outside and people kept opening the door, it was definitely warmer inside than what it usually is like. --------------------------------------------------------------------- What we ordered: - freshly squeezed orange juice - truffle parmesan fries - chicken and waffles - greek yogurt --------------------------------------------------------------------- The freshly squeezed orange juice was tasty, and you get a bit of pulp in it. I did notice that if you let it sit, that there was a good amount of water in it, so definitely will need to stir it up more if you don't drink it quickly. The fries smelled really good, and were fairly nice to eat while fresh. The chicken and waffles were decent, I liked the dried cranberries with it, as it kind of cut through all the fat. I enjoyed the personal Vermont maple syrup that came with it (I took the leftover syrup bottle home), and the food was delicious mixed together with a bit of the gravy that came on the plate. It was a bit too savory for me at the time, but a little went a long way in the sweltering heat. My friend enjoyed her Greek yogurt, since it was really hot outside. But it is something you can probably make at home, but was still refreshing nevertheless and she got full from 2 scoops out of the 3 provided. We were able to take the fries and one scoop of the Greek yogurt back for leftovers later. We would like to come back to try some of the sandwiches and the desserts, so I will be back! read more

I was in the Tyson, VA area and saw this new "NYC style" had recently opened in Vienna, VA and decided to check it ou. I lived in NYC and have been in New Jersey and am very well acquainted of what constitute a NY-Nzj style deli. These types of restaurants were trafitionally run by Greek families or Jewish families, and trademarks of these types of restaurants are pile-high sandwiches (showcasing pastrami, roast beef or turkey), all-day breakfasts, and desserts, including mile high cakes and Greek classics like baclaba or Greek orange cake). I am happy to report that this particular Carnegie Diner (according to them, not related to the fabled Carnegie Deli) has the sandwiches, the all-day breakfast/brunch items, and the desserts. The décoré is warm, modern and inviting, including a dessert case, coffee station and a bar. It has plenty of tables and a isle of booths. As usual I sat at the bar. I ordered the classic breakfast, which in this iteration included three eggs (your choice), has browns, toast and a side salad. I asked for extra avocado on top of my salad. The food arrived relatively quickly, considering it was a Sunday, and that the place was packed. The eggs arrived perfectly fried sunny side up as I requested them. The hash brown was crunchy and toasty, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was made with real potatoes. The salad was a green salad with vinaigrette dressing was not overly dressed and even had a drizzle of balsamic glaze on top. The toast was Multigrain with lots of seeds and delicious. My only quip was that I was over charged for the abocado, which was four small slices. The service was frirndly and attentive. Overall, great experience. read more

Came here with my husband and friend for some brunch. Parking was such a pain in the rear end. We literally had to circle the parking lot for at least 10 mins, including the back lot. My friend had arrived to the diner earlier than me, and I met her at the door as she told me she'd been waiting for a table (which we had made a reservation for). There apparently was a table of 4 that had packed their food up and then continued to sit there for another 1.5 hours, while diners kept coming in to be seated. We waited and waited, way past our reservation time, until we finally got a table. The front staff did apologize for the wait, which we appreciated. Our server immediately came over and took our orders. We enjoyed our food and drinks, and it was a pleasant dining experience (minus the wait). A fine new diner has taken the spot of the briefly-ensconced Yellow Diner, with a huge menu, high prices and ok food. My corned beef sandwich was fine, as was my wife's California omelet. My daughter dug her Tropical crunch waffle. The fries are superb. Service is good -- there was one error, and a plate of cold bacon, but both were fixed super fast. We sat out back, which was lucky, since the place is really loud. All in all, I like Carnegie Diner, I'm not rushing back because the prices are steep for what you get. read more

First visit today which will be one of many! We had Corned Beef Reuben sandwich, the Peter Special, fries and onion rings. Superb! Meat was tender, juicy and delicious! Chatted with Angie at the hostess station about dessert recommendations and found us to be on the same "flavor preference spectrum". Allan was a great server and kept us pleased throughout. Bonded with Gina over smokers, brisket and grilling experiences. She learned "the way of smoke" at Myron Mixon's former restaurant in Alexandria. Planned our next visit on the way home with leftovers and desserts. Don't pass up a chance to eat here and don't forget to make a reservation on weekends or holidays. There wasn't an empty seat in the house when we arrived around 12:45 pm on a Saturday. Very glad we hedged and made a reservation the night before. Loved it and will be back within the week! read more
