We moved to France for a year (turned out to be 3 years). When we returned we planned to completely redo our house. As a result we would need into the house and then out again 4 months after our return. We labeled all furniture and boxes A (basics need for camping in the house) B (items that would be needed if we were to camp longer) or C (everything). Needless to say I knew this was a bit unconventional. An amazing packing and moving crew were sent. They were fast, careful (nothing broken), congenial and they carefully labeled everything A,B,C. And the price was right for storing an entire house. Three years later when I called about having the A's moved back Lilia told me Aron had made a list of all the A's B's and C's. I couldn't remember what was in each group so she sent me the list! The move back in went well. The guys assembled those items that needed to be put back together (bed, desk, etc) and they were once again fast and careful. I can't say enough about the professionalism, service, and pricing of Carole and Jan's. We would use them again in a heartbeat (well, actually they still have out B's and C's.) read more

I called Carol and Jans early this month. I wanted to move the end of the month of August. The man Beyran gave me the first opening Sept 7th. He said someone would call me and no one did. I j have called 3 times to get an appt and waited to sept 7th and I called and Im not on the list. I guess Im not moving enough stuff to get a date. Its a good thing I called. These movers showed up at around 8:30am. They propped open the locked door which caused the alarm to start blaring. I asked them to please close the door as it was disturbing tenants. The mover told me it was okay, it would only take a minute. I repeated the door needed to be closed. He argued again and then told me to "get the F*** back in my apartment". I wasn't sure I'd heard him so asked what he said. He repeated, "get the F*** back in your F****** apartment". I called his company and let them know and requested they fire him. I was told they'd take care of it. This is terribly unacceptable behavior. I'm still shaking!!! No one should be spoken to that way!!!! Horrible read more

I'm really shocked by the first review because it sounds like a totally different company and service from what we experienced. Carole & Jan's was recommended to me by my brother who's used them 2 or 3 times before. And it was recommended to him by a friend who's used them multiple times. We had a GREAT experience, and I didn't notice a single flaw in how they did things. The person we first spoke to on the phone was professional and courteous. We had to change our move date twice, and they didn't give us a hard time about it. On the morning of our move, they called an hour ahead to confirm our appointment - it was scheduled for 8 AM and it was pouring rain. They gave us the option to move on a different date, but they said if we were game, they were too. So we proceeded. Because we told them that we had a lot of stuff, they sent out 4 movers. We had a CRAP LOAD of heavy boxes as well as furniture. I'd estimate that we had anywhere between 150 and 200 boxes - about the size that paper reams come in, as well as a dozen bigger boxes. I couldn't believe how quickly and efficiently they moved our stuff to their truck. It probably took a little over an hour. We were worried about them moving a few of our valuable items, like an antique bookcase that belonged to my husband's great-grandfather. They carefully wrapped the bookcase in heavy blankets and duct taped them strategically before transporting. Nothing was damaged. They wrap up your computers, printers, and other valuable electronics items for you - I'm sure most of you wonder how to pack certain items. When in doubt, just leave it, and they will know exactly what to do with it. We moved only a block down the street, so maybe that was part of the reason why everything got done so quickly. But they also complimented my labeling and organization of boxes. I color-coded and labeled each box - i.e., blue for kitchen, purple for livingroom, green for master bedroom, orange for office, etc. The night before, I went to our new place and also taped up the same color paper with "KITCHEN," "LIVINGROOM," etc. on them so that they would know exactly where to put things. They said most people don't do this sort of thing, but hey, I'm a teacher, and it's just in my nature. But seriously, if you want things to go efficiently, you need to do your part, too. And I didn't do the color-coding and labeling for THEM. I did it because I knew it'd make my life a lot easier. I had also asked them to make a second stop to my parents' house 10 miles away because I wanted to give them my fridge. All of this took 4 hours, and at $150/hour, the total was $600. I don't know if that's overly expensive for moving or what, but for us, I felt it was worth every penny. And did I mention that it was POURING rain? They managed to keep our important belongings dry, though they themselves were soaked. Plus, they laid out their own cardboard boxes in the entry of our new place so that their shoes would be clean/dry by the time they got deep into the house. I really appreciated that. Seeing what they went through and how professionally they did things, we tipped each mover $50. They seemed pretty happy with that. And in case anyone's wondering, no, I'm not related to anyone at Carole and Jan's. I'm not getting a kickback, discount or anything for writing this review. Moving sucks. Carole & Jan's won't change that, but they can make it suck much less. Seriously, we had a great experience with this company. We were only moving about half a mile, but the thing about a short-distance move is that it's no easier than moving coast-to-coast. You still find yourself living out of boxes and engaging in undignified exchanges like: "Hey, where's the toilet paper?" "In the box with the canned foods!" "Oh, crap." In fact, a short-distance move can be harder than a long one, because it's tempting to load up the car and make a whole lot of little trips to carry all the individual items that are hard to pack. News flash: this means you'll be carrying lots of things to and from the car. Over and over and over until you collapse in an exhausted pool of, uh, exhaustedness. We made that mistake this time around. That said, Carole & Jan's made things SO much better. They gave us a straightforward estimate with no hidden costs at the end.The three-man moving crew worked efficiently, were pleasant to be around, and handled difficult doorways and stairwells with aplomb. Maybe I'm cynical, but I think that with any moving company, you can expect to have at least one item lost or damaged in the process. The only reason I didn't give Carole & Jan's five stars is that one of our stereo speakers -- nice looking, wood cabinet speakers -- got multiple scratches on top, and we can't understand why it wasn't better protected. I think it was a fluke, since everything else was cared for very nicely, but still. Out of my several experiences with professional movers, this is the first and only one that I consider to be positive. The least I can do is recommend Carole & Jan's to others. read more

This is my very first yelp review, I'm so frustrated I have to share this. I had a very small move, 1 bedroom plus a few things. Among the items was a solid wood coffee table and a brand new lamp. Everything went well and I was happy with the service and price. Once the guys left I went in the garage to discover the leg was broken off the coffee table. Not at the joint but in the middle of the leg, it would have to be dropped for it to break like that. Later I discovered the lamp wasn't here, I had already brought 1 myself and that was the only one here. Honestly, I wasn't overly concerned, not thrilled but not really upset either. The table was older, I was keeping it because my daughter wanted to take it when she moved to college this year and a lamp is just a lamp. I called to let them know, I figured the owners would want to be aware. Was I wrong! Lilia called me and said "the guys don't make that much please don't do this to them". First she said they did not put it on the truck then she said they saw it in my house. The double talk got to me and I asked to speak to someone else, she then hung up on me. I called right back and got VM. I called a bit later and spoke to a gentleman who said she runs things she's the only one to talk to. I asked for an owner and got the run around, I asked for a name and they would not tell me. Clearly the owners don't want to be involved. I went from being ok with the 2 loses to being really upset. Accidents happen but really bad management is a decision. Just beware, as long as things go well you'll be happy but should anything go wrong they don't care at all. read more

First of all, they made the packing up and moving so easy for me. Then, for ten years (!) they took great care of my stuff. I recently moved all of the stuff (finally!) to the East Coast and as always, they were amazingly helpful and friendly, even arranging for another mover to transport my items cross-country for me. I would use this moving company again. Bonhams and Butterfields had referred them to me and they did an excellent job. They packed my breakables well and transported my more valuable art in a separate van to assure no damage. They handled the baby grand piano carefully, but they did not conduct an inspection of the piano before they moved it. There was one chip on one of the legs, which could have already been there, but should have been noted before they touched it just to be sure. My move was a short distance and I would recommend them to anyone no matter what the value of your items are. read more

I've had a storage unit at Carole & Jans since 2008, and could not be more please with their service, not to mention their prices. They have always been very helpful when I visited my belongings, and didn't ding me with extra charges when I stayed past my one hour appointment! I was recently able to clear out my storage space, because I moved to a house with adequate storage, but I forgot to shut off the automated payments from my bank. I had Carole and Jans move everything out of a 2200 square foot duplex into two separate locations, a house and an apartment on opposite sides of town. The movers were friendly and professional & they finished the entire job, both locations, by mid afternoon. Oh the little things though!!! Such as going into my bedroom and seeing that my TV remote and phone charger had been placed on my nightstand exactly where I had inadvertently left them in my previous bedroom prior to the move. Not just tossed in some box for me to search endlessly for. Then, when I went to bed, my massive vintage mid century king sized bad frame suddenly was NOT squeaking every time I got in and out of it like it had since I got it delivered 2 years prior. Not only had the movers dismantled it without damaging it, but when they put it back together they actually put it together correctly with no more squeaking.. Nothing broken, all art was moved with care and no damage. I was giving a fair quote and I wasn't given any last minute added charges. Totally happy with my experience. read more

The guy in the office was not pleasant to begin with, but also turned me away because I didn't need help moving my items. This company is the BEST I have ever used! I have moved at least 20 times in my adult life so I know what I am talking about. From the moment the lead guy Sergio walked in, I felt at ease! He was so efficient and together I could not believe it. The team worked very fast, and very carefully. If i move again, this is my go to company. Honest, hard working, nice and considerate and very professional. At one point I was walking down the stairs very tired and slowly and one of the guys offered to take a very small thing out of my hands and walk it to my care because he could see how tired I was. The estimate was guaranteed to not be exceeded and in fact we paid about a $100 dollars less than the estimate. We did full pack and unpack and a team of 6 guys came out and could not have been nicer or more professional . It was one of the best experiences with a company I have ever had. The people who wrote those other post, must be related to the owners. I trusted to move me out of my apartment and store my belongings into their storage unit. Maybe about 5 months after, they moved my stuff into another facility, without consulting me. A year and a half later, I took my things out of storage and what do you know? I had boxes missing. Whenever I called them, an old man answered the phone and did not want to assist me or he was screening calls for Barbara (the manager). They denied my accusation, as if i am trying to make money off of them. In the end they settled with me for $20. I was completely insulted. Whatever you do. DONT USE THIS MOVING SERVICE! read more

Their facility is immacualte, as seen first hand when I needed to get into my storage crates. I made an appt to go through belongings that had been stored for several years. When I arrived at the designated time, my crates were down and opened with the contents carefully displayed like on a showrom floor. Lilia could not have been kinder or more patient as I asked her to move things around to take pictures. First off I would like to say this is a great company. I highly recommend it! It's my third major move in seven years. From my past experience moving can be a total nightmare but not in this case. The house I just moved out of was very large and I was moving into a slightly smaller home. In my mind this made my move a litte more complicated as I would also have to store many important items. I decided to do a little research this time around and talk to friends that have moved in the past few years. More than one person told me I "just had to move with Carole and Jans." I got in touch with them and asked a million questions as I wanted someone to do my packing and hopefully be able help me store all my stuff too. The man i spoke with told me that they could do everything and not to worry. He came out that day and gave me an estimate and answered more of my questions. The following week I did the move. The house I was moving out of was about 10,000 square feet filled with heirlooms, art, and some pretty delicate things. I was nervous as a mouse and for the first hour was looming over the crews until I realized they were able to handle it without me and I was actually just slowing them down. I ended up going out to lunch as I wasn't needed. In the end they packed my stuff, arranged everything going into storage, and moved me I to my new home perfectly. All of this happened in under the estimated time so I even saved a little money... which is something I am not used to doing! It was wonderful to watch such efficiency In motion. Also a side note, they provided a picture inventory of my items that I sent to storage. I can phone them and they can pull out specific things so I never need to spend a day looking through boxes or fruitlessly trying to describe something. They will just have my stuff ready for me on request. I love this service! When I've stored things before this service wasn't offered... I don't know if they're the only ones offering this but if you plan to put a lot of stuff in storage, this is a terrific way to go! read more

I moved from a condo to a house. I stored everything for a month after the initial move out of the condo. Then everything was moved to the house. This is a great mover. I will not hesitate to use this mover again and again. My condo was a very tough move out. The team worked really hard with large items that had to be lifted out over a balcony! My stuff was stored perfectly and when it came time to move it to my house everything was organized and safe. I also felt that the charges for the services were fair. I wish I had read some of the negative reviews on Yelp before using Carole & Jans Moving and Storage to help move us from a one-bedroom apartment in South Pasadena to our new house just 1/2 mile away, instead of just relying on a friend's recommendation to get a full perspective on this moving company. It seems it is a hit and miss with them, and unfortunately we got the miss! I blame it on our bad luck with moving companies. We just can't win. (Actually when I used a moving company run by Chinese, they were a lot cheaper, really fast, and more careful. Couldn't use them again b/c I lost their phone number.) This moving company came highly recommended by a friend who said she used them several times, and she had recommended them to many other friends. I knew my friend to be a very picky person, so thought that if she trusted them, they should be very good. My husband contacted Wayne to come and give us an estimate for how much to move us. However after the initial estimate, we got rid of several items by moving them ourselves, or donating them, but also we bought new furnitures online that arrived in boxes that required assembly. So I called Wayne and explained the situation because to me, it seemed that it might be a wash in the total hours to move the items we had left and assemble the new furnitures. However Wayne did not want to come out again to revise the estimate. He said we would just pay $120/hour. The day of the move, everything started out well. The movers were careful to load the truck and cheerful with smiles on their faces. Then they took a lunch break after they finished loading the truck at 11:15 am. They took the fridge full of food in it in their truck, and came back at 12:20 pm to unload. They were not concerned about our food spoiling at all. They did not try to unload the fridge items first. Of course, all the refrigerated items got spoiled in the hot truck for over an hour. After lunch, they seemed to have pooped out (not sure what they had for lunch!). They were not as careful to unload the truck as when they loaded the truck in the morning. Furnitures were dragged rather than carried across our newly refinished hardwood floors, leaving several scratch marks all over our new floors. They banged a mattress on my keyboard tray with the keyboard on it, causing the entire keyboard tray to drop to the floor causing a huge nick on the floor where the keyboard tray hit it. The keyboard's shift key also gets stuck now and has to be dug out with a finger. They also broke a switch plate on the floor switch used for the floor lamp. Also they claimed it took them 15 minutes to drive the half mile from our apartment to the house, and they multiplied that by 2, and charged us 30 minutes of travel time. I drove between the two addresses regularly and it never took me more than 5 minutes. I walked there before, and it only took 10 minutes to walk!! Since they drove to eat their lunch first and did not drive directly from the apartment to the house, they obviously did not know how much time it would really have taken to drive between the two destinations. Also they assembled the bedroom set for us, but did not even touch the dining room set. When I asked them if they were done, when they did not return for 15 minutes and were just standing outside talking among themselves, they said they were done. I told them the dining room set was not yet assembled. They said we already went over the 6.5 hours that Wayne estimated, so they would have to charge us by the hour. I said ok, so they came back in, and removed the box from the china cabinet and server which came fully assembled, but they refused to assemble the dining table and chairs, claiming they did not know how. They said it was too complicated. However it was only a matter of screwing the legs to the table and chair. Assembling the bed and the daybed was actually much more involved, and complicated, and they had no problem with that. I think they just wanted to go home at that point, and did not want to work any more. When I showed them the damages they caused on the floor including a small nick in front of the chest of drawers in the bedroom due to their dragging the chest of drawers on the floor instead of lifting it up when moving it, they agreed they did it, but the mover told me to call Wayne and make a claim. That's what I did. Instead of Wayne calling me back, Joe Salas called my husband back, but I ended up talking with Joe anyway. After sending pictures of the damaged floors and broken switch plate, and an estimate from the floor guy to fix the floor for $200, and $45 to replace the broken keyboard and switch, and 3 followup emails, he sent a "courtesy check" of $50, for which he claimed the damage on the floor was not caused by his movers. This company is really lame. I cannot recommend them to any of my friends, or even enemies, as I will not want anyone's home to get wrecked by the careless crew. read more

We were given a bid but realized a few days later that it didn't have half of what they had verbally told us it would include. We relied on their professional opinion to give us a quote that would include the entire contents of our home, but came to find out there would be many additional charges. They walked away form the job when we called them on it! Very unprofessional compared to the other 3 movers we have since interviewed and received quotes from! 4/30/11 Here we go again! This time it's Lillia who I must single out as THE MOST WONDERFUL Warehouse Manager and person at Carole & Jans. We've been storing 7 containers there for a year and a half; and finally decided to downsize and send most of it to Consignment. Lillia had EVERYTHING out and organized for them to see - it was very emotional to part with long held acquisitions - but it's something we had to do. If Lillia wasn't so competent, it could have been a circus - instead it went off without a hitch - SHE IS SO ORGANIZED - been there over 20 years! I look forward to them completing our move on May 5 - and from experience I know that it will be seamless. When at last we are ready to retire to Santa Barbara, I pray Lillia and company are still around to once again coordinate the move.
