    Latte and special drink

Wow! Great coffee! First time in and this place was busy! The guy taking our order was patient and friendly. I ordered an oatmilk latte which was deliciously smooth! My daughter had a coconut almond crème drink which was on the sweet side but also quite tasty.

Cartel is known for the best coffee in Scottsdale. We've been here before and back again this time. An enthusiastic customer behind us recommended the CCL which is coconut caramel latte and indeed it was very good. We also had the autumn matcha latte which is another popular drink here. There are some chessboard and games on the tables in the immediate seating area. More tables in the back and hallway area gives a cozy vibe. We certainly enjoyed our visit. See you next time...

I haven't been to cartel in quite a few years. Decided to stop in the other day and was pleasantly impressed. The cold brew had a strong, bold flavor which I really enjoyed. I also really appreciated the sign on the door proclaiming Cartel Coffee to be a safe space, which in 2025 is badly needed especially in suburban areas! Thank you Cartel!

Coffee was good, pastries were good! Cute little spot to enjoy a slower morning. We came at the right time because it does get busy.

I love places like this little shop, old town Scottsdale is full of them. This place is very laid back and there's a big seating area. The coffee is AWESOME. And the food is very good as well. The 2 baristas were very nice too! Definitely recommend this place!

Such a cute coffee shop. I loved the vibes and lots of seating space. I got a vanilla iced latter which was very tasty. They don't have cinnamon powder though which I find odd, but still good coffee. Service was nice and quick!

This place is super cute!! I'm im the area for work, and needed to take a video meeting. Service was great and my latte was fantastic! The only thing I would change is more plugs for laptops. There is a big bench against the wall with plugs, but I didn't see any on the tables.

Great coffee shop! Reminds me that there is still hope for good coffee made by excellent baristas! It's a battle to find great coffee amongst the vast array of coffee shops these days. The simple Capp with the right frothing and temp that is not screaming hot is a true rarity! When I find them and made quickly , I'll order another :) I love the sweet milk and nutty caramel espresso taste ! What a treat for this morning while visiting Scottsdale !

Went in on a slow Sunday morning to grab coffee to go and unfortunately the service was very poor. Aside from the very nice man helping take our order, the barista was very rude. We witnessed her be disrespectful to an older couple who asked for a to-go cup, which granted paying over $8 for coffee, if you want a cup to put your coffee in, you should be allowed ! We ordered cold brew and an oat milk vanilla latte, and again was met with rude replies when asking for clarification if our drinks were the ones the barista was calling out. The drinks overall are bland but the establishment is aesthetically pleasing inside !

My daughter & I visited Cartel Roasting before exploring the downtown area of Old Scottsdale. My nephew & his wife live nearby and highly recommended it. We had no trouble finding a parking spot when arriving around 10am. Everything was very efficient and clean. I had a chai latte, while my daughter had an iced vanilla latte. Both were excellent. Cartel was a great start to our exploration of all the shops & galleries. Highly recommend!

Pricing was crazy, even for old town, a little more than $8 for a standard iced coffee, wish I would've made coffee at home.

This review is for the totality of the experience…read more I made an advance reservation at Alma Scottsdale for a mid-sized group of 7 to celebrate a special occasion. Our party arrived right on time for our reservation, but we were not seated until 15 min later because our table was not ready. It took about an additional 15 min to get tap water for the table (there was not enough provided anyways), and to place our orders too another ~20 min. The food did not arrive until 30 min later. For context, we eventually learned that the restaurant was short staffed and the bartender was also operating as our waiter. When the food finally arrived, there was a mix-up on what was delivered. We had checked with the staff who delivered one of the dishes: we ordered the "wild mushroom" side, but what we received did not look quite like it. We asked clarifying questions x2, but were assured, "no, it is the wild mushroom." Turned out, it was the mushroom empanada that was delivered to our table, which we originally did not order. The management did rectify the situation upon the conclusion of the event when we were paying the bill, but to us, it felt a bit accusatory as if we intentionally wanted to cause a huge fuss about the final total, which was absolutely not the case. The food in general was delicious. If this was a more standard dining experience, it would have been 4-5 stars just for the food. The service was very subpar, and really colored the entire experience negatively, therefore the two star review. I understand that staffing shortages happen -- fine. My family has worked in food service as wait staff for 25+ YEARS, so I am empathetic. But for management to ring up our bill and then come confront us in an inflammatory manner, making us feel like we were wrong, on an occasion to celebrate something special, was extremely disappointing.

I ordered the Honey Jalapeño Chicken Sandwich with fries, and so did my friend. We both agreed it was delicious especially after adding a little ranch. Since we had a larger group, we ordered a martini tower, which was fun to share and definitely had enough alcohol to catch a nice vibe. One of my friends ordered the Huevos Rancheros and really enjoyed them, while another got the chicken sliders and liked them so much she took the leftovers home and happily finished them later. The highlight of the experience was the live one-man band, who created a great atmosphere, and our server, "Flexy Lexi." She was incredibly sweet, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. Great food, fun drinks, live entertainment, and excellent service. We'll definitely be back!

I sat out on the patio since the weather was so nice, and it made the whole experience even better! I love a good patio! The margaritas were delicious, and the food hit the spot. I ordered the shrimp Mediterranean platter, which was light, fresh, and full of flavor. For appetizers, I tried the deviled eggs (without bacon because I'm not a fan), and they were super tasty. I also had a bite of the honey jalapeño chicken sandwich, juicy and spicy sweet. The overall aesthetic is very coastal Hamptons with a relaxed, beachy vibe that feels both stylish and comfortable. Service was great throughout, and a nice bonus is their all day happy hour on Mondays.

We have yet to have one bad dish. The chicken mole is different from our first visit. It's a grilled chicken instead of crispy chicken, which we liked more. Our server told us we had to try the sticky cake, and she was right. My girlfriend and I were left wishing we had a whole bottle of that sauce to take home. The only thing we didn't enjoy was the perfect patron margarita, tasted and looked like straight lemon juice. Service makes or breaks the dining experience. Tatiana was amazing. She recommended her favorite dishes and explained the menu in depth, something we wished for on our first visit because the menu is huge. Her personality and attention to the details made the meal for us. We will be requesting her for all of our future visits Overall, great experience and great food. We recommend Sumomaya

SumoMaya Updated Yelp Review: 2.0/5…read more This one pains me to write. The last time I dined at SumoMaya was about 10 years ago and at that time I gave it a 5/5-star experience. I remembered it as a vibrant, trendy, elevated dining destination with great food and a fun atmosphere. So when I decided to bring my mom (who had never been) to try their Arizona Restaurant Week menu, I was genuinely excited. Unfortunately... much has changed. Let me start with the positives because there were a few. The inside ambiance is still fantastic. SumoMaya absolutely nails the vibe. Modern, sexy, upscale energy with a lively crowd, gorgeous interior design, and a house DJ spinning deep house that honestly may have been the highlight of the night. If you're looking for a place to grab cocktails, enjoy music, and soak in a cool atmosphere? Sure. For that alone, they still have something going for them. Also, our server was excellent -- friendly, attentive, and professional. Now...the food. We arrived around 7:30 PM and didn't leave until roughly 9:30 PM, which felt excessive considering we were doing a fixed Restaurant Week menu. While our server was great, the kitchen/food pacing was painfully slow. The Breakdown: Maya Roll - 4/5 The clear winner of the night. Fresh, flavorful, well-balanced, and honestly the only dish that reminded me why SumoMaya used to have the reputation it did. Pad Thai Pork "Al Pastor" - 1/5 This was rough. The noodles were noticeably overcooked, the flavor was bland, and overall it felt confused conceptually and poorly executed. Definitely not a dish I'd ever order again. Chilean Sea Bass w/ Miso Glaze - complicated . This dish deserves its own courtroom trial. The first sea bass plates came out undercooked to the point where the fish practically looked ready to swim away. Let's be clear: Chilean sea bass is not sushi. Serving undercooked fish in this context is not just disappointing -- it's a legitimate food safety concern. That initial version? 0/10. Once corrected, the bigger issue became the miso glaze, which was aggressively overpowering. To the point where both my mom and I felt a bit queasy after a few bites. Without lime? 1/5. With lime squeezed over it to cut through the miso overload? 3/5. Even then, it was just... mediocre. I've had far better Chilean sea bass elsewhere -- buttery, delicate, flaky perfection. This wasn't that. Given the glowing reviews I had read about this dish, this was one of the bigger disappointments of the night. Mexican Street Corn - 0/5 As a side, we were served the Mexican Street Corn, and unfortunately this was another major miss. I love Mexican street corn and have ordered it at countless restaurants throughout Arizona, so I was excited to try SumoMaya's version. Sadly, this wasn't even remotely close to what I'd expect from authentic or well-executed street corn. My mom, who is a chef, immediately commented that it tasted like canned corn, and honestly, I had to agree. There was very little of the bold flavor profile that makes Mexican street corn so addictive. The cotija, lime, spice, and cream elements that should make the dish pop were either absent or completely overwhelmed by the watery dish itself. 0/5 stars. In fact, this may have been the worst Mexican street corn I've ever had at a restaurant. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, especially considering how many excellent versions of this dish can be found throughout the Valley. Bread Pudding - 0/5 I don't say this lightly: possibly the worst bread pudding I've ever had. Dry. Hard. Portions of the bread tasted borderline burnt. Instead of warm, decadent comfort-food dessert vibes, it felt like chewing on a stale kitchen experiment gone wrong. Final Verdict: This is where it gets tough. If we hadn't been dining on the Restaurant Week prix fixe, I honestly would have felt severely swindled, because the standard menu pricing here is not cheap -- and based on the quality of what came out of the kitchen, I simply don't see the value. The only reason this review gets 2 stars instead of 1 is because: Great ambiance Awesome house music / deep house DJ Excellent server One good sushi roll But based purely on food quality? This was deeply disappointing. I genuinely hate saying this because I remembered SumoMaya so fondly, but I will be shocked if this restaurant maintains longevity if this is the level of food consistently leaving the kitchen. Would I come back? Maybe for drinks, ambiance, and the music. Definitely not for dinner.
