i like supporting local businesses. so i picked Carty Moving and Storage out of one of local small press papers i read. i ask him to come by for a quote. he came by, and he looked really put out because the start point is so far way. while he was here didn't take any notes, and he didn't think i knew how to estimate the number of boxes i would have. i've moved far too often, but i know how many boxes my junk fills. after he left it took 2-3 days for him to put the quote together. in the meantime i got another quote which was 50% less and more in line with what i expected from the 4-5 moves i've done in the past. read more

I had a rather simple moving job that included moving a very heavy stove over a counter that simply wouldn't clear at the floor level. Tommy came and looked at the situation, said he'd come back with two strong guys two days later. And that is exactly what happened. Within 5 minutes I had the stove in the middle of my kitchen floor. Tommy and the boys are amazing. I booked them total last minute for a move from SOMA to the Mission. This was an against all odds move. It was raining like hell. Parking was a total nightmare, didn't have parking permits at either location, and I gave Tommy the wrong address. All issues aside they were extremely fast, strong, careful, considerate, and above all very helpful and empathetic. Tommy even threw down on some taqueria recommendations. I couldn't be happier with them. I had to pack up and move my art studio into my home and into storage. So two stops and a fair amount of parking confusion since I live on a busy street. I scheduled an estimate at my home with Carty. Not only did the Carty representatives fail to show up for the estimate, they never called to tell me they weren't coming. After waiting around for an hour, I called them. It took me asking "what happened" two different times on the phone and two times via email to even get an apology. They never explained why they didn't show up. Maybe they are great movers, but I was shocked and disappointed by their failure to arrive for my estimate appointment. I've moved a few times, and i must say, moving has never been easier with these guys. In our old place, we had 2 very long flights of stairs, so i anticipated a very long day. They moved our 3-bedroom apartment into our new place in just 6 hours. Here are highlights: - They were on time, immediately started working, and were extremely friendly and funny. - They lifted our heavy boxes with ease, and never complained. - They had a good system: one guy prepared the house, the other 2 did all the schlepping. It seemed to work well. - The most impressive thing to watch was these men hopping up and down the stairs with 3-4 heavy boxes on their backs. They are human mountain goats. - They packed up a lot of our fragile furniture and treated it like it was their own. We truly appreciated the respect they gave all of our belongings. - Their price was extremely fair, less than other moving companies, and i have a feeling they completed the job in less time that others would have. Estimates were coming in from other moving companies for 8-9 hours. These guys estimated 6 hours, and sure enough, moved everything in 6 hours. I wouldn't hire anyone else for my next move. I just used these guys for my move and was thoroughly impressed. Tommy and Amos showed up right on time with a huge truck and moved all my crap out of one apartment and into another in SF in under 3 hours. Tommy charged me exactly what he had quoted on the phone (no hidden charges for anything), and they were really careful with my stuff. Nothing was damaged or broken and they were really nice on top of that! I would highly recommend these guys and would definitely use them if I ever have to move again. read more

These guys did a great job. I called them up on a Wednesday and scheduled a move for Saturday morning. They showed up on time, got the job done fast, and all of my stuff made it safely to the new place. Only two small hitches: I didn't have the right hex key for my bed frame, and they didn't have the tools in the truck so they had to go get it from another truck (I wasn't charged for that time). They also left a couple small pieces of my bed frame in the truck but they realized it a couple hours later and brought them to me (I didn't have to call). read more

Yes yes yes. WE ALL KNOW MOVING SUCKS. (insert generic rant re: moving, bla bla bla, packing, etc. etc.) HERE IS WHAT YOU MAY NOT KNOW: Tommy Carty and his band of handsome and dapper muscle men make it sort, of, like, sort of nice.....? Imagine a gaggle of handsome dreamboats complete with freakishly charming Irish brogues showing up in your apartment and carting off all your worldly possessions while smiling and winking and telling you in that TDF brogue that you are a 'fantastic lady' and a 'fabulous packer' and all manor of other niceties that make you giggle like a small but happy moron. There were several bonus moments when they went above and beyond; they unscrewed a vanity mirror in my bathroom that I could not do due to the screws being stripped, they dis-assembled my antique bed and then re-assembled it at my new place, and when I realized I had forgotten to buy a plastic bag to transport Dolly Parton (my goldfish). my handsome Irish men punched holes in the cap of a mason jar, emptied the aquarium for me, and Amos Carty held sweet dolly in his lap for the drive to my new digs. These guys moved all our stuff into a storage facility nearby that I chose ahead of time, and it was fast, courteous and efficient...even when we decided to make a quick change into a larger unit at the last second, they were patient and got the job done smoothly - and helped me judge the correct size unit to move into (to the square inch, with luck!) at some point we all have to accept that carrying a dresser, mattress and all those boxes of crap (where the hell did all this stuff come from?) is no longer physically possible. this was me in december. i know it's been a month, but i promised tommy i would write a review so here it is. so, if you've also resigned yourself to getting movers, i don't see why you wouldn't hire tommy and his crew. as far as i can tell, no one has had any real issues with him. i was very concerned because i have friends who have had movers show up HOURS late, demand they pay for an extra guy (and threaten to leave if they don't), break stuff, steal stuff, you name it. i did a lot of research, hemmed and hawed, and made an appointment with tommy. at $90/hour this was the best deal that i found, and he had good reviews. tommy called the day before and morning of to reconfirm the move, came exactly when we had set up and the whole thing took 4 hours. it was a little longer than i was expecting because i lived in a small apt, but they did not slack at all. he used a couple of his boxes at no charge to pack up my last few items when my trader joe's boxes ran out, gave me a lift in the truck (i need a car) and pointed out good bars in my new neighborhood on the way over. overall a great experience. i'll be calling tommy again next time i move. read more

These guys did an amazing job for me. I had a small 1BR apartment on the third floor that they moved to a 4-story walk-up in 2 hours with three guys. They were polite, professional and pleasant. I have used Carty twice in 2 weeks. My main reason for getting movers was to shift the large items that my girlfriend and I could not e.g. beds, desks etc. The first time was great. Tommy, the owner, and another guy arrived on time and set to work. I helped out - they said it was a three person job and I had booked two of them. Things went really quickly. It took just short of 3 hours. My only complaint was that it was a the time of payment that Tommy dropped in that driving time was double, an experience that I seem to have in common with other Yelpers. I was happy, paid for the 3 hours and tipped. This service was worth 5 stars. The next time was a different story. Bearing in mind that it was a week day and I had to go to work, I booked Carty for 8 am on a Tuesday morning. The night before I moved number of my smaller boxes that were not heavy but which would be time consuming to move. I was going to head off to work but waited a while with my girlfriend to make sure everything was going to plan. There was definitely less urgency to move this time that last time Pieces of furniture that required one or two people to move in to the apartment in some cases required two or three to move out. They were also rude. Tommy later explained that he and his lads felt uncomfortable working while watched. Fair enough, but I was paying them to move my stuff and I was dressed in a suit for work.... When it came time to pay, Tommy told me that he should charge me for four hours not the two hours that it took because that was how long he had budgeted. It seems that he had forgotten that it took two people three hours only two weeks previously to move more things He at least had the grace to only charge for the two hours that it took- ultimately a good thing because there would have been no way on that I would have possibly ever written a check for four. He has also subsequently pointed out that because I moved such a short distance (from the Marina to Pac Heights) and that I was a repeat customer he did not charge me double time for the driving. All of that said, during both moves Tommy and his lads did show a high degree of care, didn't break anything and placed the furniture and boxes where we wanted them in the new apartment. Tommy has subsequently called me to discuss my Yelp review (I have now made some changes above). Initially he was pretty abrasive, but after I explained my point of view he became more concerned and showed empathy for my position and I his. As a consequence I have raised my rating to 4. read more

We called them a few days before our preferred date of April 28. We should have booked earlier, but they were extremely accommodating. On the morning of the move we decided that we wanted two drop-offs, one to a house in the Mission and one to our storage space on Treat Street. They were on time and were good sports about lugging a china cabinet up three flight of stairs. My partner was impressed with their ability to manage without complaining and I was impressed by their promptness and correct assessment of how long the job would take. It's good to know that there are reliable and good movers you can call at short notice (if you didn't plan as well as you should have). I'd totally use them again. read more

These guys are pros. Tommy, the owner, was one of the two men who showed at my door on time, and somehow, without appearing to hurry in the least, made record time spiriting away all my boxes plus some others I had forgotten to mention, without any griping or fussing. And this is all the more impressive that I had only called them with 4 hours advance notice, and they had squeezed my little job in, for a reasonable price. (Still, I'd advise you call them with as much advance notice as you can, with all the good reviews they are consciously earning on Yelp, they may get really booked up!) read more

Arrived on time, finished at the low end of estimated time, got BIG stuff through LITTLE doors with nary a scratch and were cool, funny and pleasant throughout. Paid $90 /hr which is about average, but I think these guys are worth more. For example - when I described how I wanted the bedroom furniture placed, one of the movers stopped and said "you sure? you know that's very bad fung shui." I checked - he was right. read more

I was referred to Carty Moving by another moving company when they were booked. Tommy and his crew took me on late notice and did a fantastic job, in my opinion. I was just in a high-speed race car accident and had two broken ribs so I was pretty useless during the move so they even packed up my things that weren't boxed and were fast, friendly and took very good care of my stuff. They have boxes for hanging clothes which helps tremendously when moving closets. Pretty good price, too. Hopefully I won't be moving again any time soon, but if I do, I'd definitely use them. read more

Just finished up with these guys, and I wanted to make sure I remembered EVERYTHING they did well. They were nice, funny, fast and everything was done to perfection. We went with these guys based on Yelp reviews, and were not disappointed in the least. We hired them to carry the heavy stuff (including a sofa and a God-forsaken treadmill) from a second-floor flat with a curved staircase to a third-floor apartment. They did a great job, no damage to the walls (which, apparently always happens) and everything ended up in the new place with no problem. The move took about three hours (from the Richmond to Noe Valley), including drive time, and it came to a little more than $300 (not including tip). I wouldn't go anywhere else for my next move. just used carty for my june 1st move. one word review: perfect. details: tommy was very accessible by phone prior to the move, and answered all my naive moving questions. on the day of the move, tommy and his crew arrived, sized everything up, helped me wrap some things, and moved everything, no nonsense. extremely efficient, and very careful with my stuff. everything was done in under two hours, and this was by far my least stressful moving experience. i easily recommend carty, and would definitely use them again. read more

We've used Carty's for 3.5 massive moves over the past few years and they've always been a godsend. They will move ANYTHING. They moved our piano. They moved all of the furniture from our 2 houses on the same day into 1 new house. They even moved a piece of furniture that we bought at a store in SF to Oakland that weighed about 800 lbs and they brought it up 3 flights of stairs. No challenge is too great and boy, can that Tommy Carty back a truck up the steepest of driveways. They are the best!
