We had a positive experience with Carty. They were fast, polite, efficient, and very strong. They tried like hell to get our enormous couch through our tiny hallway into the living room. The cost was a bit more than quoted, but the move took longer than either of us had thought. The only negative: I booked the moves on Monday for Saturday of the same week. As of 4:45 on Friday, I still didn't know what time they would be coming the next day. I didn't have to be out of my place at a certain time, but if I had needed to, I would have been pretty panicky at that point. Definitely a good choice for your next move. read more

I've only been living in the Bay Area for a short time, and thus, did not have nearly the arsenal of friends required for a move this February (especially from Berkeley to Pacif\ic Heights). Tommy and his crew were wonderful, from being upbeat and conversational at 8 AM, to being patient with the very slow elevator in my building, to offering to rearrange my furniture exactly how I wanted it once the stuff was in the apartment. Don't even consider any other moving company! Tommy and Steve moved a spinet piano for me from Lower Nob Hill to the Mission (at 24th and Potrero) in just about an hour. Not only did they pick me up on the way to get the piano, they got it packed up and moved from a 3rd floor apartment in about 15 minutes (no damage to the floors, sellers were very impressed!) They also got it up a super steep flight of stairs to my flat w/out any problems (they even managed to avoid falling through our weak floorboards!) They charged a flat rate (super cheap!) which no other moving company I researched offered, and above all they were friendly and professional. I look forward to buying them a pint next time I see them at the Napper Tandy! Trust me, these are the guys to call. read more

For the actual moving service, these guys were excellent. Among the best I've dealt with. They: - Showed up on time, - Were friendly and efficient (well, 2 of the 3 guys were efficient, one seemed pretty hungover). - Scheduled me on 3-day notice. - Did a great job packing my place. I haven't unpacked everything, but they were very thorough and careful with the packing. - Came in pretty close to their estimated time and cost. Overall, I think I paid a fair price and got very good service. I would probably use them again. So why the 3 stars? 2 reasons: 1) When it came time to pay the bill, they tried to charge me extra because they had 2 extra guys come over to help get my couch out the window and down to the ground. This would have been OK, but it was never mentioned to me before - and I explained very clearly what was involved with the couch when I got the estimate over the phone. Tommy told me it wouldn't be a problem with the 3 guys they would bring. They ultimately didn't charge me after I made it clear this was the first I'd heard about the extra cost - no hard feelings. 2) They charge you 5% extra for using a credit card. They advertise on their website that they accept Visa/MC, but no mention there of the charge. I know there is a fee to them for accepting cards, but I also know it's not 5%. 3) The hungover guy took a nice chunk out of the wall in my new place, and went about his business without so much as a "sorry". A ding or two should be expected, but an apology would be nice, too. Neither issue is the end of the world, and probably not enough to keep me from using them again, but worth mentioning anyway. read more

Can I say... this crew of hearty movers was excellent. I've been in the city for many years.. so that equates to more stuff that I think I actually have. Tommy and his crew of two additional men, Liam and PJ, arrived right on time with a truck and an excellent attitude! We loaded my 1bd apt. and unloaded within 2 hours! and that's with 2 flights of stairs at the new place. They charge a very fair price, aim to please, and are a pleasure to work with.. I would recommend them to my Grandmother! Oh and they DO take credit cards.. which Pat Ryan, Delancy Street, and a few others don't.. Top notch. They made the unpleasant task of moving very painless. They were the first to return my call & Tommy came round the same day I called to check out what we needed to move & walked me through what I would need (e.g. Parking permits). We hired them to do all the packing, which they did the day before, but left out exactly what we needed. They were also happy for us to provide our own boxes. They have a very friendly & helpful crew. We had one minor breakage, which they were very responsive to in helping us replace. Only great things to say about these guys. read more

I called Carty Moving to take care of my move this past weekend, and was very glad that I did. They arrived exactly when they said they would, and it was a no-hassle, no-BS move. They were very respectful of my goods, and not a single thing was damaged or broken (although I expect even a certain amount of 'moving trauma' is inevitable even with the best movers). They were pleasant and friendly without being invasive, and I even got a few good hints about where to catch a good Irish music session. =-) They were very efficient, and finished the cross-town studio move in about 2 hours total. I think their rates are very comparable to other movers, and definitely worth every penny since I think they were more efficient that other movers that I've had. Overall - a very painless move. If you value your possessions, I would STRONGLY advise you against using Carty Moving and Storage. I moved house in March of 09 and it went smoothly enough. The Carty moving crew arrived on time and were extremely polite and professional. Approximately 90mins after the Carty moving team had left my new address, I noticed that a valuable floor lamp was missing. In addition, there was a painting that I had never seen before sitting with my other paintings. I called Tommy immediately and explained the situation. Tommy then called the moving crew who confirmed that my lamp was not still in the truck. Tommy was initially very good and offered to pay $150 toward a replacement lamp. He asked me to purchase a new lamp and send him the receipt, which I did in early September. Guess what? After 2 months of emails and numerous phone calls (which he ignored), he now flat out refuses to make good his offer. I called him earlier this month to politely ask him what the status was, he was rude, belligerent and slammed the phone down on me. Give your business to someone else. Also, if you moved house with Carty in March and are missing an oil/wood painting, I have it and am more than happy to return it. read more

These guys really are great. I've moved with them twice now and have been pleased both times. We had 2 guys, Randy and Benji, move our studio apartment from SF to Berkeley. They were quick and really pleasant, even when it was pouring rain and they were lugging those last few items out when we weren't sure how to pack them (toaster oven; cat scratching post? what are you supposed to do with these things??). They even put this huge door back on its hinges for us. I was a little worried when I did not get a confirmation call during business hours the day before the move as I was told, but I left messages and Tommy called me back in the evening to confirm everything. In the morning the guys were there right on time -- actually, early! If you're looking for fair prices and fast movers, definitely call them. These guys are great, and well worth it. They navigated couches, tables, dressers, etc. down six flights of narrow stairs, with NO damage to our stuff or to the hallway. They also took care to avoid damage to the hardwood floors in both the old and new homes. They were quick and hard-working, and friendly (ranging from very friendly to not as friendly). In many cases, they were jogging up the stairs when they were going to get more boxes. The guy that takes reservations is not as focused on customer service as he could be, and is blunt and to the point. I knew that going in based on other reviews. (I think he sometimes takes calls while moving, which is why he doesn't have all of the info ready to go.) We did confirm a couple of times, just to make sure that they were coming. He gave me all of the "additional cost" information upfront, such the gas expense and double-time for travel. I didn't feel there were any hidden charges. It does help to be upfront and honest about how much stuff you have and how many stairs so that they can accurately estimate the moving time and people. (If you aren't, then you affect people later in the day, as evidenced by some of the tardiness complaints.) read more

I hired Carty a second time and was considerably less pleased with their performance. These guys are great for a small apartment move in-town but less than ideal for bigger moves. The biggest issue was that the total bill ended up almost 2x his original estimate. Tommy's explanation was that there was unexpected traffic on the Bay Bridge and more furniture than he anticipated. All of that is fair enough (he has to pay his guys after-all) but I felt as though the delay was in-part attributable to the fact that his guys were pretty young and seemed a bit unexperienced. read more

It was probably the hottest day of the year and they moved our 4 bedroom house across the city in just a few hours. Yes folks, another GREAT experience with Tommy Carty and co (on this run it was Ed and Danial)...the problem. A furniture delivery duo had said they couldn't do it because it was 'impossible' without certain equipment. Solution: call Tommy Carty, who's crew had moved us into this house a year ago in record time, with not a jot of fuss and with everything intact. 20 minutes later, the old furniture is downstairs in the garage, the new furniture is upstairs in the living room, the 'impossible' job done using only knowledge, skill and strength. Seriously, don't even bother looking anywhere else, Tommy and co are THE company to use for big moves and also for those smaller-yet-seemingly awkward jobs. This is the 2nd moving firm where no one has replied to email inquiries. I had a similar experience happen with another mover using email. Update: I got a nice apology and "thank you" from Thomas indicating my email got stuck in a spam filter. He also said he was having someone fix the broken page. This is the second time I used these guys and no wonder, they showed up on time (10 mins early in fact), assessed everything, took great care of all my stuff, even the shoddy Ikea stuff lol. Tommy and his crew were very professional, polite, and didn't even take a lunch break from the 7 hrs of moving...no breaks, no lunch. I gave them water and reassured them that it was ok to take a break from hauling all my stuff up the 3 flights of stairs. Tommy agreed to giving me the 90/hr rate for 2 guys, and I ended up giving them their normal $100/hr rate. Seriously, they were well worth it and I would definitely hire these guys again. Carty Moving helped us move recently, on short notice and for a very reasonable price. Tommy and his helpers were friendly and efficient. We had several sets of stairs and 2 queen mattress sets to deal with. 1 box spring looked like it would definitely not make it up a narrow staircase with a right angle turn. With my permission, Tommy cut out two small sections of the frame so the mattress could actually make it up to our guest room and still be usable. What a relief! read more
