We went there recently- a month ago. It's a place "in the making". Meaning nothing feels done. Hard to explain - it's a feel. There was only one waitress (maybe the owner) and there was a huge party there at a table - maybe 12-15. The drinks at that time have no hard alcohol- fermented tequila/wine in a margarita is a headache waiting to happen. Ordered a steak burrito and it wasn't anything special. Lots of rice and a 1/5 of a steak- so. Or much meat at all. With all the trouble of the signage (pure comedy- if you know - you know), and impossible to tell if they're open (blacked out windows- since added a "open sign" we were hesitant to try it. Based on the experience- we will wait about 6 months to go back and keep eyes on the reviews. It's a new location- new everything so maybe they'll be a great place someday. Just had dinner at the new Casa Canela and omg the food was amazing and the service was too! Our drinks were always filled and our chip basket never empty. Our server was Marcela, and she took amazing care of us. They even customized a kids quesadilla for our picky eater. The queso fundido was so good. My Carne Asada was cooked perfectly! My husband had the flavorful carnitas plate and really enjoyed it. We were so full and even had to take food to go so the portions are awesome. We even ordered dessert to go. I tried leaving a review on Google but it disappeared after I posted it. Let's see if this one stays. I want to start off by saying that the food here is delicious for the most part. I have enjoyed most of what I have tried. What I do not like, however, is the service we have received time and time again and also the lack of cleanliness. I took my sons to eat right when the restaurant opened at 7. We were sat down immediately but the table was not clean. I pointed it out to our server and he seemed to doubt what I was telling him until I picked up one of our kid's menus and showed him that there was already syrup on the back of it. We hadn't even ordered food so there was no need for us to touch the syrup. The server "cleaned" our table but it wasn't any better after he was done. It was upsetting because I know there's side work at the end of the shift so the table should have been cleaned the night before, not when I asked that it be cleaned. I've read reviews where people say that their servers are very attentive, almost to the point of being annoying. I've yet to experience this. I feel like every time we go, we hardly see our server, especially the last time we went. Both my dad and husband had ordered coffee and no one ever came around asking them if they wanted more coffee. My husband basically had to flag our waitress down to ask her for more and it wasn't busy at the time we went. This restaurant has a no split check policy and then they only accept two cards so unless you have cash or plan on using Zelle/Venmo, don't go. I've never had an issue with our servers being able to put x items on one card and the rest on a different card but our server last week was saying she couldn't do it. She was pushy and rude about it even though a different server had done it for us just the week before. I've stood there and seen them do it when I use Apple Pay so I don't know why she didn't want to do it. I ordered their abuelita chocolate horchata and it was not good. I tasted it and it took everything in me not to spit it out. My grandma offered to taste it and she said it tasted like spoiled milk. My dad also tasted it and had the same reaction I did. This wasn't even at 11 am so I don't understand how they could have served me something that was bad so early in the day. Like I said, it wasn't busy. The last complain I have is about the service again. My dad said he went with a group from his church and the gratuity was included, which they expected because their party was bigger than 6. He said that the server saw that not everyone included extra too (again, there was already added gratuity) and she made a comment about them not tipping. That shouldn't be something that gets said if you ask me. Gratuity had already been paid and some had already added extra tip. That's just very rude. I've yet to visit and feel like my servers are doing an adequate job (and no, I don't expect too much. My husband and best friend worked as servers for a while so I respect them but also know what are basic duties that I have yet to see the servers from this establishment provide). We were driving down from Greenfield California and i remembered hearing about Casa Canela. I read the excellent reviews and they didn't disappoint. As we walked in that Sunday evening the restaurant was filming and they seemed occupied. But as soon as we walked in the door they were attentive. Stayed at a hotel near by that offered free breakfast but when we got downstairs there was not much left so we decided to come here. Service was good but when we got our food the plates were small. For the price I expected decent portions not tiny. I would have been ok if the food was delicious but it wasn't. My eggs benedict were supposed to have poblano peppers and i only found 1! Stopped by for dinner and I was so happy I did! They had cochinita pibil on the menu!! This dish is a traditional one from the Yucatán region. And they absolutely nailed it!!!! It transported me to the flavors back home. The ceviche was extremely fresh and had the right citrus taste. First time eating there yesterday. We were going to IHOP but they were closed. Ended up here and I have to say the breakfast menu is just too expensive! 2 pancakes 2 bacon 2 eggs over $20 dollars. There are 3 other restaurants within less than a block away where you can get the same amount for less than half. I would not recommend breakfast at this place if you don't want to spend $100 bucks to feed a family of 4 when you can go to most places and spend half or less for even more food. Now! Because breakfast was so expensive we decided to get a burrito and Mexican corn on the cob. I will say the burritos were very good! A little plain and not much ingredients inside but a good amount of food to over fill you and the service was excellent! 2 burritos, 2 corn, 2 drinks came to about $60 out the door. A bit more than we wanted to spend but between the service and the food we did get I was ok with it. The place is big, no one was there at 3-4 except maybe 1 or 2 people. When it was Coco's it was always packed. The people here are very nice and I worry between the rent and all the other bills how they can afford to keep the place open. I hope they become very successful! The place is very clean as well. I would recommend people supporting this neighborhood business, my worry is the base of their customers are people from the neighboring hotels which isn't much. I may give them another chance, but breakfast we will go to the other large franchises in the neighborhood. Although I don't doubt their breakfasts are good especially with the Latin touch. read more
