My husband and I recently met friends here for dinner on a Thursday evening. We arrived at about 7:30 and were seated right away. There were quite a few other people dining. We had not seen our friends in a while, so we were visiting and taking our time ordering, until the server told us the kitchen closed at 8:00. The food was delicious and the service was also great, and we had a great time. We continued to visit, not realizing that the restaurant had winter hours, and closing time was 8:00! We should have realized when we were told that the kitchen was closing that the whole restaurant would be closing. The server was very nice, but we were embarrassed once we saw that the bartender and the other servers had their coats on and wanted to leave! The hours were posted on the door of the restaurant, but of course we didn't notice until we were leaving at about 9:00. I wish the hostess would have made it clear upon seating us, and we probably would have gone somewhere else so the staff could leave on time. read more

I love New Mexican food. I love the chiles. This place has taken care of my need for New Mexican cuisine a number of times. The prices are right. Ignore that gravel parking lot and enjoy the setting, complete with stream and goldfish, lush plants (hey, isn't this a desert?), spacious rooms, and nice decor. Have some enchiladas. read more

I love the Casa and stop each time we are in town. The salsa is hot and the green chili sauce is delicious. The sopapillas are hot and fluffy and wonderful. The papayas are excellent, also. This charming restaurant seated us by the waterfall and koi pond! What a delightful surprise! We could not make a selection so shared the Sampler plate for two. It included enough food to feed a bear, or 3 adults. The traditional crunchy tacos were tasty. The rice and beans were good. The enchilada was good , but the real star was the Chile relleno! It was hearty, substantial, tasty, and the best I have ever had! The carne abodaba was very very tasty. The fresh chips and salsa were hearty, but I had to ask for wimpy salsa as their chef's recipe was extra spicy that day! Derek was an excellent server, kept our beverages filled, and responded to our requests quickly. Food was fast! If you go, you can sit outside or in, but don't forget the Chile Relleno! We've had lunch and dinner here many times in the past. I finally came around to write a review. The food has always been great. The taste is great, the hotness of the chili is great, and the salsa compliments everything really well. We chose to sit outside during this visit. The pond, plants and the waterfall made the experience a great one. After reading many reviews there seems to be a huge issue with the service. The service here is very slow. I'm the type of customer to tip 20% or more, as long as they keep our drinks filled, and check on us as often as possible. Our waitress only visited our table 3 times. Once to get our order, 2nd bring our drinks, and then bring our food. The time between the food order and it being served was good. For some reason, our waitress didn't interact with us the way she should've. Definitely 3 stars for the food, but 1-2 for the service. This establishment has been around for years. It's maintained well, clean and famous. They need to work on the service portion. read more

I'm from northern New Mexico and a native New Mexican. A family wedding brought me to town from Phoenix. I was missing authentic cooking. I ordered Huevos Rancheros with Red Chile . They were fantastic! The service was great too. The only reason it does not receive five stars is because it was dark inside and hard to see. A must have though. My first time eating in New Mexico and the chips & salsa and sopapillas were my favorite! I ordered the "Build your own platter" with the two items of a tamale and the Carna Adovada with rice & papitas and it was ok...wasn't too impressed but the red sauce was flavorful and spicy. Just came back from lunch there and was not impressed. A friend bought lunch, which normally makes the food great (always tastes better when it's free). Ordered the Old Fashioned which is basically flat enchiladas with an egg on top. The plate doesn't come with your normal beans and rice-instead, I got papas which were pretty burned. I ordered red chile, and there wasn't much on the plate-certainly not any extra to sop up with my side albino sopapilla, which was still a little doughy. Overall, I would not return. Absolutely the worst New Mexican food I've had in New Mexico EVER. I took my out of state guests there, bragging about 'authentic NM Food..', although I had not eaten at this place for years but remembered it as outstanding in food and atmosphere. The chile, both red and green were XTRA hot, uneatable even though I'm used to hot chile and guests are used to hot, spicy foods also. The rellenos were too hot, mushy and the tamales, worst ever. Flat tasting, like they'd been soaked in water and steamed for days. The waitress tried to be accommodating, but no way to make up for the food. To top it off, my guests witnessed, 'mice running' in the dining room. I am beyond embarrassed at my error in judgment, that is taking them to Casa Benevidez. No way to make it up to them, they've already left town. With a bad taste in their mouths and mine! Recommend El Pinto, I won't make the same mistake next time. read more

I fell in love with this place when I lived here back in the early 90's and when I moved back, I had to eat there. They have never disappointed me with their food, always excellent, along with excellent service. When ever I have out of town company, this is where I take them, and they always love it. Excellent ambiance and atmosphere. Meals were average, somewhat bland, lacked full flavor and taste, and nothing special. Service and meal preparation were so-so and fell short of what I was expecting after reading other reviews. It was disappointing. Stopped for posole and it was delicious. Spicy and hearty - no wonder the locals love this place.

Large, beautiful outdoor seating/patio with gorgeous plants, flowers & waterfalls/pond. Sit outside if you can. I had the carne adovada stuffed sopapilla plate....delicious! My husband had the huevos rancheros and said they were really good. Service was great. My only complaint was the $8.25 for guacamole & chips (not worth that price) and $3.00 each for a orange juice and diet coke (free refills, though). The rest of the menu items are reasonably priced. Will go back for sure on my next visit to ABQ. read more

We were guests at a wedding where both the ceremony and reception took place here. The service was very attentive and every one (34 of us) thought the food was great, with all but 2 of us being New Mexico natives. The stuffed so papillae were a special treat, mine with beef fajitas and my wife's with carne adovada. Several in-laws work nearby and have lunch there regularly so selecting this restaurant for the special day was an easy decision. Enjoy! read more

My husband and I were in the mood for Mexican food and Casa de Benavidez popped up as an idea. We are so glad that we went!! Our server was Amber and she was great! The skill this lady has with a tray of food impressed us!!! My husband had the daily special and I had the chicken enchiladas. Both of our meals were amazing! The sopaipillas were insanely good!! We had enough to have leftovers for lunch the next day; which is always a bonus. Planning our next trip to bring our grandkids because they will enjoy the patio, waterfall and pond. Came here and got two breakfast burritos and a few drinks, only to get an 80 dollar bill that didn't match up with the actual itemized receipt. When I asked the bartender about the ghost charges she said we charge for cheese and every ingredient in your order which doesn't state that in the menu. Seems like I busted them inflating the bill with no sign unless you add the charges up yourself. The bartender was very snide about her response "sorry we charge for everything". I tried the traditional flat style cheese enchiladas with an over easy egg on top. The red chili wasn't too spicy. I tried a side of green and it was a bit more spicy and better tasting. This plate was OK. I've had better when made at home with a hotter chili sauce. My son had the huge sopapilla burger but he said it was just OK as well, just filling The outdoor patio is nice though, especially during Albuquerque's amazing fall weather. Nice atmosphere with good service on refills and extra sopapillas. The sopapillas alone are good and nice as a post meal desert with honey drizzled on. Hot chili, cold beer, what more could be said. Some of the best carne Avovada and chicharrones I have had in my lifetime of living in the Albuquerque area. Both red and green chili were comparable to any restraint in the state. Service with nice and professional. The only down side to the restraint was the price. Particularly the drinks. I think overall it was about 8-10% overprice and that might be the price of the amazing atmosphere. My wife and I will go back when the time is right. I was born and raised in Albuquerque and for the most part always gotten my fix for New Mexican food here. However, there are times that I go some where else and always, I mean always, I say, not as good as Casa Benavidez. This place rocks when it comes to the food. One thing I will say, their margaritas are way watered down. They definitely need help in this department but you can always order mexican beer. read more

I have lived in Albuquerque for a number of years and I am constantly impressed with the food and service at this North Valley establishment. The food is constantly good and the bartenders prepare exceptional libations. The patio is a great place to bring friends and enjoy a peaceful relaxing dinner. I love the chicken and cheese rellenos. Looking around, you get the impression of a family enviroment. Many of the guests are regulars who know the lives of many of the servers. The treatment my party received, due to the inclusion of a disabled person, was shameful. Essentially, I came in and requested ahead of time if it were possible to fit a party of six in for just sopapillas. We were told this was fine. When my party joined me, we were told it wasn't actually possible because one of our party was disabled, and the available table had steps to get to it. I said I was sorry I hadn't mentioned that, and the hostess snidely said, "Yes, you should have." Surprised, I was quiet a moment, and then another in my party suggested we be served at the tables in the lounge/entry room, which was accessible. They said that was quite fine and said they had wonderful sopapillas. We sat down; no one came to serve us. My husband finally went to inquire and was told they never serve in the front room, and we had a 45 minute wait ahead of us, and acted as if we were crazy to have sat down at the front room tables which they had agreed to serve us on! Having previously eaten there, I can say the food is fine, though nothing to write home about. After this needlessly embarrassing and astonishingly rude behavior, I will never go back. read more

We really, truly wanted to like this place, since we had heard about this place and had never been there before, but some things were just not right about our experience. From the moment we opened the door and walked in, the strong smell of bathroom disinfectant wafted from the restaurant, for some reason. Not a pleasant first scent. Then there was a sign asking us to wait for a hostess to seat us but there was none to be found. We waited a while until we asked if we could seat ourselves, and someone came by to seat us. Later on we noticed other people getting chips and salsa, but we were never offered any until, after some time of waiting for chips to come, we asked for some. Also, we noticed the prices were quite high for even such things as a cheese quesadilla off the kids menu, yet the taste of the food didn't justify the high price tag. One of us ordered a combo meat plate, but the order got mixed up.....no meat, so it had to be remade. By the time the new order came none of us were hungry anymore, and having brought an out of town guest, we felt somewhat disappointed at all the things that were off that day. While our server was very accomodating and nice in trying to fix the food mixup, and our water glasses never went empty, the overall (service/ambience/food) restaurant experience was not that great.
