I visited Casa with my mother and brother for what was supposed to be a celebratory family dinner. The chef, food quality, and servers were genuinely excellent, and I want to be clear that the wait staff handled an extremely uncomfortable situation as well as they could. Unfortunately, the conduct of the owner, who introduced herself to us as Jupira, turned the evening into one of the most violating restaurant experiences I have ever had. Before she came to our table, we had already noticed an extremely loud and disruptive nearby table. The noise was so excessive that my mother, brother, and I had trouble hearing one another. The owner was part of that table. She was vaping inside the restaurant, drinking, speaking loudly, and behaving in a way that made nearby diners uncomfortable. From our table, we observed her repeatedly touching and groping the people seated with her before she eventually came over to us. When she approached our table, she touched my hair and neck without permission and asked what I had been pointing at. She then introduced herself as the owner and began inserting herself into our meal. She sat uncomfortably close to each of us, placed items onto our plates, repeatedly touched my brother's water glass with her hands, leaving visible handprints, and invaded our personal space in ways that were completely inappropriate. She also appeared heavily intoxicated. Her breath strongly reeked of alcohol, and as she spoke loudly over us, saliva was landing on and around our food. My brother was visibly uncomfortable when she sat on his lap. She then moved next to my 66-year-old mother, squeezed in beside her, held her down, and kissed her cheek without consent. My mother, my brother, and I all felt deeply uncomfortable and violated. During this interaction, she repeatedly told us that her son would be starting at MIT in September and loudly discussed how hard she had worked to "get him there." She also shared inappropriate personal details, including comments about using tuition payments to control his choices. These details are included because they were specific, repeated, and memorable, and because the interaction was not a brief misunderstanding; it went on long enough to derail our entire dinner. The most disturbing moment came after she asked about my phone wallpaper, which was a photo of my 2-year-old daughter. My mother mentioned that we were out after visiting my newborn second child. The owner then made an offensive remark about the nationality of one of her in-law relatives (her cousin's husband or son-in-law). I told her that my wife is of that same nationality and that I did not condone or agree with the comment. In response, she told me my opinion did not matter and then jokingly wiggled her fingers over our entrée plates, saying that I should not say anything or else she "might poison" our food. At that point, we no longer felt comfortable continuing the meal. We asked for the check, explained our frustration to the staff, paid in cash, and left. We still tipped the servers because they were kind, professional, and not responsible for the owner's behavior. Again, the food and staff were excellent. But no quality of food can make up for an owner vaping in the dining room, appearing intoxicated, touching guests without consent, touching food and glassware, making offensive remarks, and joking about poisoning a customer's food. We left feeling thoroughly disgusted and violated. I would strongly caution anyone considering this restaurant, especially for a family dinner or special occasion, to choose somewhere else. read more

Restaurant Week is a golden time to try our new spots and it had been a while since I'd had good Brazilian. We walked in from the biting cold to this warm (in many ways), cozy Tribeca eatery offering up traditional Brazilian cuisine with vegan options to match and both went with the Restaurant Week prix fixe: a starter, an entree, and a dessert. She began with the yuca fries, continued with the vegan stroganoff, and finished with a passion fruit mousse; i opened with codfish fritters, carried onto the vegan feijoada, and ended with a flan The yuca fries were crisp and rich, served with a spicy and herbal green sauce and a chili oil while the fritters were more croquette: fried crisp and tasty, though with more bones than I would've expected The stroganoff was packed with vegetables in a tomato cream sauce and served with a side of farofa (toasted cassava flour). The feijoada was hearty, smokey, and too much to finish in one meal: a crock of black beans stewed with tempeh, seitan, and a veggie sausage served with a plate of white rice + farofa + sauteed collards + a tomato and onion salad + orange slices. The real deal version (crammed with beef + pork cuts) would've packed more flavor but the vegan version was far from disappointing The desserts were predictably sweet: the tart passion fruit balanced the rest of the mousse, while the burnt sugar of the flan kept the dish from being too closing Service was attentive for how busy the night was read more

Came for brunch / late lunch for 2 on a Sunday and had such a lovely time! Was pretty empty around 3pm and there's tons of seating towards the back. The inside is very cozy with tons of booths. Started with the cestinha de coxinhas and pasteizinhos and both were incredible. The coxinhas were spot on and the pasteis were perfectly crispy. For our main, we split the Picanha grelhada and it was perfectly juicy and a big portion size that was perfect for splitting. It also comes with rice, beans and farofa which were all delicious. I was ready to be annoyed -- that credit card fee caught me off guard and honestly felt unnecessary. The oxtail was so good and I even liked the gravy. It was perfectly tender, rich, and full of flavor. I still think they should drop the extra charge, though, because great food like that doesn't need bad vibes attached to the bill. Just because of the credit card surcharge it will prevent me from being a repeat customer and I will warn my friends about this nuisance fee. BTW, the pork belly was really good. They're Back--and Better Than Ever! We were heartbroken when our favorite restaurant closed a few years ago, but hearing they reopened in Tribeca was the best news! This new location perfectly captures the warm ambiance we loved, and the food remains as incredibly comforting as ever. Without question, this is the best Brazilian food in NYC. Though we no longer live in the West Village, I happily drive in once a week from Brooklyn to stock up on their mouthwatering dishes. Some of our must-haves include the empanadas, cheese bread, beef stroganoff, oxtail, and all their steaks--every bite is a treat. Honestly, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu, and I recommend trying everything at least once. Don't forget to ask for extra vinaigrette on the side--it's a game-changer! I came here on a date with my boyfriend for restaurant week. We didn't actually end up doing the deal because it wasn't really much of a deal and we wanted more flexibility in what we could order. The food was quite good though and the service was excellent! For starters, we got Linguica Calabresa Com Cebola (Brazilian Pork Sausages), Salgadinhos Sortidos (Croquettes) and Caldinho de Feijao Com Ou Sem Cachaca (Spicy Bean Soup). The croquettes were AMAZING (some of the best that we've had). Tip: Don't accept the drizzle of alcohol in the spicy bean soup unless you want your soup to taste like an actual shot loll we had never had this before and when the server asked if we wanted the drizzle of alcohol, we assumed it was like when you cook with wine or something. This was not the case. The alcohol taste was sooo strong and not what we expected. We asked the server if it was possible to get it without the alcohol and they were so nice about it! Didn't charge us for a 2nd one. The 2nd one tasted much better and up our alley. For our mains, we got the Moqueca de Frutos do Mar Com Farofa de Dende (Seafood Stew) and the Picanha Com Arroz de Brocolis (Prime Steak). I loved both of them. The stew was perfect and soothing. I've always liked Brazilian cuisine, or at least the steakhouses. I have not tried real Brazilian cuisine until I tried this place. My husband and I treated our officiant (also my husband's cousin) to dinner here during restaurant week. It's located in West Village along the 2/3 line. We got there super early so we loitered in the neighborhood until our reservation time. The restaurant itself is not a large place so it filled up really quickly. Service was really friendly and quick. His cousin and I both got the caipirinha, which is the national alcoholic beverage of Brazil. It's made with Cachaça (which is fermented sugarcane juice), sugar, and lime. They have flavored ones like passionfruit which is really good. And it's not in-your-face with sweetness or tartness, so it pairs well with any of the dishes you get. Since it was restaurant week, it came with 3 courses -- appetizer, entree, and dessert. His cousin and I got the empanadas, which were f**king delicious. And my husband got the cheese bread. If you've ever been to a Brazilian steakhouse, the cheese breads are also served there. I didn't know they were cheese breads when I tried them for the first time. I just remembered they were really good and I wanted an endless supply of them. The empanadas come with 3 different ones: beef, heart of palm, and cheese. The cheese one I think I made my husband eat because I can't really eat cheese. But the empanadas were fresh and crispy, not too greasy, just perfect. Entree wise - the cousin and I both got the feijoda and my husband got the strogonoff. I first heard of feijoda on the Netflix show "Final Table". Feijoda is Brazil's national dish and it's basically a black-bean stew with meats and other vegetables. It's so good. It's defeintly soemthing you have to try at least once in your lifetime. It also comes with a side of rice, fruits and veggies, and farofa (which is toasted cassava flour). Everything together with the stew is just delicious and having the sides complements the stew. Everything is harmonious. Finally dessert: I got the chocolate bonbons, I don't remember who got the mousse and who got the flan but both were also really good. I'm not a big flan or mousse person, but it's worth a try. I'd probably be more generous with my grievances if the price point here were a bit lower, but a modest brunch for 3 here without alcohol cost us about $150. That being said, I do appreciate that they made the effort to offer an array of vegetarian options in spite of the limitations posed by traditional Brazilian cuisine. The vegan feijoada was quite good - smoky and rich flavors, paired with deliciously garlicky kale, spice-dusted plantains, and rice. I'd recommend they keep the seitan and tempeh in the stew, which I thought soaked up the flavor best, but the tofu and especially the vegan sausage had a bit too much going on by themselves. Still, $30 is too steep for this dish. The pao de quiejo were also fantastic (much better than those at nearby Brigadeiro Bakery), and the heart of palm empanadas exceeded my expectations in terms of flavor complexity. The yucca fries could have used more flavor (or some ketchup - we requested it, but it seemed to get lost in the mix). The yucca crepe was also on the bland side, even with a healthy portion of cheese and mushrooms inside. And don't get me wrong, I love yucca, as one of my favorite dishes was the stewed yucca at La Caridad 78 before they closed. Service is friendly but very, very slow. Casa is a quaint restaurant located on a corner in West Village. The menu is pretty standard for traditional Brazilian food. We ordered PÃO DE QUEIJO (cheese bread) and BOLINHOS DE CHUVA (cinnamon sugar donut holes) to share. I liked the donut holes better as they were warm. The cheese bread cools off quickly so the outside can harden a bit if you don't eat it right away. I took advantage of the Fall Special 3 Course and ordered PASTEIZINHOS SORTIDOS (mixed empanadas), MOQUECA DE FRUTOS DO MAR (seafood stew), and BRIGADEIROS E BEIJINHOS (chocolate and coconut bonbons). I liked the heart of palm empanada best! It was smooth and creamy. The beef empanada was pretty average and wasn't anything special. The cheese empanada was very bare. There wasn't a lot of filling in them so I would order something else next time. The seafood stew was very flavorful and filling. The food was all Delicious, i got the prato vegetariano with yuca fries and collard greens. The collard greens were Perfectly cooked and so vibrant especially with the jalapeno sauce they give you. I think id personally enjoy some sauce w the yuca, but it was still rlly nice! My friends also liked their entrees. Our lime mint and passionfruit lime caipirinhas were good -- on the stronger side. Why we keep coming back: for our first reservations eating indoors after the pandemic, I'm so glad we returned to Casa. We were seated immediately, served quickly, and feasted on some of the freshest, tastiest, and delightfully classic takes on Brazilian staples that Casa always serves up. What we ordered: there are a lot of great Brazilian dishes on the menu here, but we were more than happy this last visit just to split among us an assortment of appetizers we had grown homesick for. The highlights included CUSCUZ PAULISTA that tasted right out of a kitchen in São Paulo, PASTEIZINHOS that were wonderfully savory and fluffy without being too greasy, PÃO DE QUEIJO that you can't replicate frozen or with a mix, FEIJÃO that hit the spot, and some LIMONADA that tasted fresh from the juicer. What to avoid: of everything we've ordered from here over the years, I think the only real disappointment has been the EMPADINHAS. I'm not sure what dough they are using for this, but they'd be far better off just reheating the frozen variety that are now a dime-a-dozen in many Latino grocery stores with Brazilian items. What to expect: Casa is not a particularly large restaurant, but they make the most out of their space -- some big windows facing a not-too-busy street corner do a lot to help alleviate the claustrophobia. Lastly, we ordered the flan and the passionfruit mousse for dessert. Flan was delightful, and as a Filipino who takes pride in Filipino flan, this flan definitely passed with flying colors. Not too sweet and great texture. On the other hand, we were disappointed with the passionfruit mousse. That was too sweet and the passionfruit syrup was too strong a contrast for the sweeter mousse. My last notes: This restaurant was on the pricier end for restaurant week. I still struggle somewhat to justify paying $75 for black beans, rice, etc. Overall, the vibes and the food were very homey. What a wonderful accident I would up here. My boyfriend thought this was another restaurant but we decided to stay and try it out anyway. Seating is pretty limited, so make a reservation! There is indoor seating, outdoor seating, and the outside but really inside setting that you see everywhere in NYC. We were about 45 min early but they were able to accommodate us outside very quickly on a Friday evening. We started with drinks (passion fruit with lime and regular passion fruit). Both were really good. For appetizers we had the empanadas..I would have a picture but they were so darn good we ate them right up. I've never had such a crispy/flaky empanadas but they were perfect! For dinner I had the chef special fish with rice and beans, yuca, and collard greens. My bf had the hand cut sirloin beef with rice, egg and other sides. Both dishes were PHENOMENAL. The server brought it to us and to my surprise ; when I got home and actually looked at the receipt ( I took a pic of it) realized they charged me $10 for each "extra side " they brought. Hence our Meals were all $31 dollars each and the sides that came with it as I mentioned were tiny! They should have communicated with me that I was going to be charged $20 total if I wanted a little extra! Of course I wouldn't have accepted it. Keep in mind we were only asking for more vinagrete and farofa , which shouldn't be considered a side dish to begin with since they make it in bulk! It's not like we were asking for more French fries, beans or rice.... I e-mailed the restaurant and the owner , Jupira, was very rude and told me to simply dispute the transaction with my bank if I wasn't satisfied ! Not a good way to handle business but Ok! Cute west village spot. They did their best to accommodate our group of 12 on a last-minute ask, some of the party ended up leaving because it just wasn't quite enough space (and we did squeeze in). They did try to help, but it was clear that it was more of a take-it-or-leave-it type of situation. Once the group split and we got settled in, our server did a great job taking care of us. Since we were still 8 people, they asked us to do a prix fixe menu but were accommodating with some minor adjustments. Overall, the food and vibe were good and the caipirinhas were fantastic. KenScale: 7.75/10 My wife Jun's best friend from high school is married to a Brazilian currently studying in the U.S. The couple recently visited us in the New York City and said on our first lunch get-together that they are planning on visiting this Brazilian restaurant in West Village that I have no idea existed. The husband of Jun's friend lamented how laypeople seem to associate Brazilian food with just meat barbecue dishes, and said there is no much more in the country's culinary tradition. I got curious and suggested to Jun that we tag along them. Overall, Casa was a solid initiation into the Brazilian cuisine. When you look at Casa's menu, there are some familiar-looking dishes purely based on the description. You have probably had croquettes and cheese bread at other non-Brazilian restaurants, but the Brazilian version at Casa was quite delicious (croquettes came in three pieces, with one each based on chicken, shrimp and cheese, while the farm cheese bread came out gluten free and, more importantly, warm), as was the crab meat baked with tomatoes, Parmesan cheese and bread crumbs. For the larger dishes, Brazil's national dish feijoada (a black bean stew with prime meats) served with rice, oranges, collard greens and farofa (a toasted flour mixture commonly used in Brazilian foods) shows you the classically rustic side of Brazilian home-cooking. I thought the prime cut steak served with broccoli rice and farofa was also surprisingly well-cooked. On the other hand, sea bass with tomatoes and jumbo shrimp didn't feel particularly special. For the dessert, the classic Brazilian caramel fan was serviceable. When we came to the restaurant on a Wednesday evening, the city was under a heavy snow storm so perhaps that explains why the restaurant was fairly empty. There are fairly affordable South-American centric wine selections to go along with your food. The dining space looked perhaps a little to West Village-y (I was hoping to see some traditional Brazilian decorations and ornaments here and there), but otherwise it looks like a good venue for casual dinners with friends and family. New York City still could use a few more Brazilian restaurants, and Casa is one of those places that gives you a good idea of what kind of flavor and texture that the country's cuisine offers. read more

This is a Brazilian restaurant. They didn't have any tables without a reservation, although I came on the early side, so I sat at the bar. It's a dark and rather small place. I ordered bone-in chicken and didn't realize they were wings with some other pieces of delicious chicken. The wings were crispy, not oily at all, with some light seasoning and came with a chimichurri and another spicy sauce, but I preferred the ketchup to the spicy sauces. I also got a side order of beans which were very tasty and hearty - definitely better than a usual side order of beans. They served a warm roll with butter as well. The bar service was attentive. I had a wonderful experience dining in this place . The food was phenomenal! Everything tasted exactly how my grandma had cooked back home in Brazil . I had visited this place on Thursday which was surprisingly busy for a rainy day . I sat at the bar where I was treated with an amazing service from Klaus . I have truly never been more disappointed by a takeout experience. I understand restaurants are struggling during these times but this entire order pictured above was $145. We ordered the steak, Beef stew, cheese bread, octopus appetizer, and plantains. The two measly plantains at the top were $5.
