I'm not that fluent in Spanish, but after this visit, I'm pretty sure "Rio" means "Crap". Someone at the Convention Center recommended this place and it WAS closer than some other options, but seriously, keep walking by this place to somewhere better. My co-worker got the shrimp tacos and they asked avocados or cabbage. Well, who knew the cabbage was dry-ass undressed cabbage. No lime, no vinegar, no mayo, no nothing (is that a double negative?). It was disappointing for sure, but the shrimp wasn't bad. I had the dinner platter which had a lot of food: Crunchy Taco - Delicious and ate that first so it stayed crispy Tamale - Dry AF Masa and small AF too. Yuck! Cheese Nachos - Tiny plate with queso, and they were good (not pictured) Chile con Carne - Dry AF Meat even WITH the sauce (which was flavorful) Cheese Enchilada - Delicious and the best thing there Rice and Beans - Standard Fare I didn't finish the plate, but it was a lot of food. The food was absolutely terrible! My girlfriend and I both got sick an hour or so after we ate. My girlfriend got the Flauta plate and the Fauta's were way over cooked! I got the Chili Con Carne and it was very bland! We also had to pay for the CHIPS AND SALSA!! What credible Mexican restaurant makes you pay for chips and salsa?! They also gave our seat away which we waited 40 min for! They told us we took too long to get to the front kiosk! I was on the fence about trying this Restaurant purely because it was on the Riverwalk and therefore I felt it was a tourist trap. That may be the case, but I have to say the food was outstanding. I got a true taste of Tex Mex cuisine!!!The portions are gigantic and delicious.. It's a family run restaurant and is the oldest on the Riverwalk. It opened in 1946. I sat out by the river and watched the world go by as I tucked into a very savory TexMex Platter... OMG... I'd say 4000 calories... and I didn't need to eat for the rest of the night!! Decided to try the shrimp fajitas, chips, and salsa. The food, ambiance, and service were great. Food came out quickly and was tasty.

The service was amazing and my cocktails was good but the food was disappointing. The menu didn't have many options and the dish that we did order had nothing special with flavors. My beans tasted like can beans and dry, like if they were reheated more than once. If you are into taking pictures for the view this is a good spot due to it's colorful umbrellas and being seated by the river. read more

I'm playing tourist in San Antonio for a few days, and after a tour of the Alamo and some walking around, I decided to stop in at Casa Rio for a solo lunch. I was seated immediately, and my server, Kim, was friendly and attentive throughout my visit. I chose to sit inside since I had been out in the heat for a couple of hours, and the dining room was cool and quiet. My sever recommended the green chicken enchiladas, so I ordered those, with beans and no rice. The food was lukewarm at best. The refried beans were fine, but the enchiladas were the blandest I've ever had. The chicken was moist, but lacking any seasoning, and there was barely any green sauce to speak of on the plate. There was plenty of food for the price, but the lack of any real flavor was quite disappointing. I understand that Casa Rio is likely catering largely to tourists looking for a convenient place to eat and drink on the river walk, but just because we aren't locals doesn't mean we don't want a tasty meal. read more

A nice classic Mexican option. We stopped for a quick lunch and it was tasty. Service was prompt and friendly, it seems like they get pretty busy at times. There is indoor and outdoor seating options. There was also a mariachi band serenading guests while we were there! I'd say the food was nothing to write home about. We came here while attending a conference. They had indoor or outdoor seating.But we chose to go with the indoor seating.Just because it was very hot outside. If you sit outside, you do get a great view of the river walk. I ordered a spicy margarita and a beef fajita taco plate. The margarita was really good, but you couldn't drink around the rim because the jalapeno had rubbed off so much on it that it was burning my lips. The fajita was pretty good. They definitely have homemade flour tortillas. The chips however definitely not homemade. You must have to pay for chips.And salsa, because they did not bring us any, which was a bummer. read more

Located on the Riverwalk and just steps from the street, this place has a prime location. If you sit outside, you can almost touch the water from the tables - that's how close you sit. The view of boats, ducks and sound of water make the setting even better. The food is descent and somewhat authentic. I got their deluxe dinner plate which comes with different items to eat. It had a taco, tamale, enchilada, chili con carne, beans, rice and nacho chips served with fresh guacamole. The chili con carne was flavorful as was the enchilada. The tamale was on the dry side and I had to use salsa to moisten it up. The taco was ok but more like a home style Taco Bell taco with more meat. The beans and rice were great. I used the guacamole, which tasted fresh and not with added preservatives, with the chips. The ja CBP o cheese was very good too. To be honest, they should have definitely taken off the guacamole, but I pointed out that the skinny margarita had cherry juice and a cherry in it, and I didn't drink it, but that wasn't taken off and my son's dinner which was some sort of plate with an enchilada, and they even showed us on the ticket that it said no onions was completely full of onions and that should've been taken off anyway It's not about the money. I don't write reviews often, but the older I get, the more I feel the need to share my experiences. I've been eating at Casa Rio for over 30 years. I'm not from San Antonio, but I visit several times a year, and this restaurant has always been part of our trips. When my kids were younger, we brought them here every time. We've celebrated family dinners here with our extended family, and it has meant a lot to us over the years. The food has consistently been good, and the service has been solid. Unfortunately, the recent menu changes are disappointing. The "no substitutions" policy and the upcharge for à la carte items are a deal breaker for me. Additionally, the fact that you are now charging for chips and salsa really says a lot about how you view your customers. I understand the restaurant will continue to thrive without my business, but it's still a sad moment for my wife and me as we choose to move on. I see people's reviews saying they feel rushed here, but duh! You're on the riverwalk with a bunch of tourists. They do the best they can and they're making sure everyone gets a table at an adequate time. They said the wait would be 45mins and it was like 15 so heck yeah! We also had outside drinks and they let us keep them under the table which was so nice because they didn't have to do that, but we didn't see the sign. Very nice of them. I was down in San Antonio for a conference and came here with my coworkers. We sat along the riverwalk, which was pretty cool. I heard this restaurant has a lot of history and it was evident in the environment. I would say the food is ok. I have had better texmex in other places (even in Dallas) but being able to sit along the riverwalk and eat was quite a cool experience. I will say, people will walk by you and watch you eat and so will all the birds waiting for you to drop something. Service was what you would expect. We didn't realize that most of the restaurants right on the River Walk generally don't have the greatest Tex-Mex food. Because we were so drenched from the heavy rain from earlier in the evening, we just sat down at Casa Rio, the first restaurant we saw and came across. We were told that we could be seated right away if we opted to sit outside versus inside. I didn't really want to sit outside because it was still kind of chilly. But my sister was really hungry and wanted to eat right away. So we compromised and sat outside. However, the employee who sat us was kind of funny. The tables right along the River Walk hardly had that many people, and she still told us to sit at one of the inner patio tables. She was also hardly attentive. The waiter who came by was nice, but he only really paid just a little more attention to us than the lady who sat us. It was kind of hard to hail him over at times, and we felt somewhat forgotten. It also took a while for our food to come. And when it finally came, it was somewhat disappointing. Our empanadas were not really tasty, but rather bland. Our beans were really mushy. Our watermelon Frescas were tasty and refreshing though. The only good thing with dining at Casa Rio was the ambiance of the River Walk, and the live mariachi band that would come by every now and then to play. But other than that, it's probably best to eat outside the vicinity of the River Walk, and then enjoy the River Walk either before or after your meal. read more

The salsa was meh, street tacos were just OK, and my over $10 spicy margarita was extremely small for the price. As far as service, the waitress forgot my meal, so I waited about 10 minutes after everyone else in my party before I even got my food, and we dealt with pigeons around us the entire time. Very average Mexican food this place is always rushed so they do not let you customize the menu- it is how it comes. No substitutions- which's I hate because I like certain items vegetarian. For the first ever we were disappointed in this place! Ordered chicken strips for our granddaughter and they came out raw in the middle! The rest of the food was not as good as we remembered. As much as we like going there every time we travel to San Antonio we may have to rethink that next time we visit!
