There were a lot of people walking the street which is right in the middle of the restaurant outside seating making it very squished. The food was great and would definitely come back overall if I ever came back to San Antonio. This is one of the older, more well known restaurants on the Riverwalk, and I've eaten there several times over the years. I will say that the food, on this visit, was the best it's ever been- slightly better than average. The low review score for this visit is for the service. No chips or salsa, no drink refills, and we waited almost an hour for our check once we finished eating. We opted for Cafe Rio after exploring the Alamo and River Walk. The restaurant takes up a huge portion of the river walk which allows seating both indoor and outdoor, on multiple levels. The menu is large which plenty of offerings at a very reasonable price. I would have liked the chips and salsa to be complementary, but then again the prices of entrees are low so I understand why the chips and salsa are an additional fee. I would say this was close to authentic Mexican food, we were hoping for that and it TexMex, so if you are too this is a safe bet. We tried the Deluxe Dinner Entree, chips, and salsa. The salsa was delicious, fresh and full of tomatoes and onions. The quality of the food was fine, not great, and the portions were decent. We enjoyed our meal, but would likely try another spot if we found ourselves in the area again. read more

I hosted my Pullins-Jones Family Reunion Banquet at Casa Rio-San Antonio Riverwalk on Friday, July 18, 2025 in the Casa Rio private room was perfect! The Casa Rio event coordinator was an absolute joy to work with. He was very accommodating. On the event day, the staff was AMAZING from start to finish. The room set up was absolutely beautiful with Casa Rio standard decor. The fajita/enchilada buffet which included all the bells and whistles was served hot, fresh, and it was delicious. The cash bar was a success. The bartender fixed everyone drinks perfectly! My entire family had a wonderful time. Thank you Casa Rio staff!!! read more

Great spot for a quick bite or drink by the river. I ordered an horchata and a flan, hoping for an authentic Mexican dessert and drink but unfortunately, they didn't deliver. The flan was on the small side and reminded me of the prepackaged kind you can pick up at HEB from brands like Goya. It honestly made me wonder if that's what they're serving, just flipped onto a plate with a little extra caramel added. The horchata was cold and refreshing, but it still missed the mark and left me craving the real thing. Not terrible, just not what I expected. To be quite honest, I was persuaded to join a group of friends here of which I was originally cautious. for a party of eight, it was a half hour wait time during lunch, which is somewhat normal for a river walk restaurant. The food itself was good but not something to write home about. The food was somewhat affordable, with options many options being over 12 and more being around 20. If I could give this place 0 stars I would what an embarrassment of an establishment. First off the food was mediocre at best everything came out dry and the seasoning was pitiful. And Second of all they served my child RAW chicken and it wasn't even one of those pieces that you can barely see some pink in the middle it looks as if they dropped it in the fryer for no more than 30 seconds(see attached photo). And after we brought this to the servers attention there was like a half ass apology with "can I have those pieces the cooks want to see em" as if we would openly lie about this incident. And last of all there was zero attempts by any type of management to come and apologize or even comp that specific meal. I would highly encourage every one that is even thinking about giving this place a shot take a trip to the McDonald's across the street at least they know how to cook food thoroughly. read more

We decided to get a quick lunch at Casa Rio and it is decent food. It's more Tex-Mex style and it doesn't compare to Mi Tierra, a San Antonio classic. I enjoyed sitting next to the water. I got the Standard Plate which is a cheese enchilada, tamale and chili con carne. The sauce was good and I enjoyed the plate. A friend got the nachos and they liked them. I can't remember what the others got but they seemed to like it. The salsa was fresh and the chips were crispy. Service was slow and the server didn't pay attention to our group. Casa Rio is located along the river walk and it has a lively patio right along the river. When we were there around lunch time, the weather was perfect and a mariachi band was playing. I imagine the restaurant gets a big crowd whenever the sun is out. Service was quick at finding us a table and great all around. Those aspects alone are amazing! It's easy to see why a lot of people dine here. The food is okay, but leaves a lot to be desired for Tex Mex. We got an enchilada and taco combo and it was good but really could have used more flavor and more flavorful salsa options. If you're here for a nice time on the river front this is a good option, but if you're there for good food maybe look elsewhere. read more

I was in town visiting and decided to finally have a nice meal with family on the Riverwalk and choose Casa Rio! During the time that I went it was definitely busy but expected for a Saturday, The service was quick and we were seated outside fairly quickly. The food was hot and the cheese enchiladas were so delicious I would definitely order them again ! Also the side of rice and beans were the perfect portion. My only concern is the small portion of chips that are $2 each time, so they are definitely not bottomless like most restaurants which is shocking! read more

San Antonio's Riverwalk is nice to walk along, but it's like a shopping mall of restaurants. If youre looking for friendly, family oriented and not expensive, Casa Rio is the place. Youre visiting a tourist site, so expect a crowd and long lines. That said, when we checked in for a table, they ask " inside, outside, under the bridge or first available." It was a little cool out, and we really had no preference, so we said first available. The predicted 40 minute wait turned out to be 10 minutes, and we sat inside. Service was a little confused, but its spring break and they were busy. We had no agenda, so it was all good. Eventually, we had three different servers and multiple folks checking on us. Margaritas are tasty and the chips and salsa were delicious. The chips had a distinctive corn flavor and the salsa was like homemade with fresh, ripe tomatoes. I had shrimp tacos with both the cabbage slaw and the corn salsa. The taco was packed with decent-sized shrimp and the poblano crema was a fantastic add -- not overly spicy, and really made the shrimp pop. My partner had al pastor street tacos and the plate overflowed with meat. Both the shrimp and al pastor came with refried beans and Spanish rice -- more than enough food for any hungry tourist! Casa Rio is the oldest restaurant on the Riverwalk and it's delicious, so give it a try. read more

We enjoyed dining outside along the river walk. This place is huge and even though there were a ton of people, we didn't wait very long for a table by the river. It's convenient that they text when your table is ready. Service was friendly and fast for the most part. Had the house margarita and started with complimentary chips and salsa and queso with picadillo beef. The salsa was not spicy, but had great flavor. The queso with beef was very good as well. We had quesadillas and beef fajitas for our entree. The guac that came with the fajitas was amazing because it tasted like it was homemade / made fresh. The fajitas were good. I'm used to fajitas being seared in a cast iron skillet, but it didn't taste like they were. Even if they weren't, it was still good and I enjoyed it. A photographer came by and said she's taking photos for the restaurant and that we would get the photo for free. We were a bit hesitant but said yes anyway. In probably less than 2 mins, someone else came by and showed us the photo. It was free for the small photo that has the Casa Rio background, but they also gave options for larger photos, which we declined. I'm not even sure if this was all part of the restaurant experience, but atleast we got a free photo souvenir from it. Overall we had a great experience with dinner along the river walk. read more

We went here twice during a week stay on the Riverwalk. The casa trio, plus a hot salsa, was very good. The trio street tacos, add a little hot salsa, were outstanding. The green chicken enchiladas or the la Senora were also very good. The view of the river, especially where the three waterways come together makes for a perfect scene. I wouldn't say it's terrible either. I was shocked to have found the menu was amazingly cheap. I could not complain about anything really given the prices. If you just want to fill an empty stomach this is the place. It's nothing fancy but you have a view of the river. It's also next to a Go Rio stop so you can hop on within a few feet. I was celebrating my graduation and we decided to dine at Casa Rio for lunch. We were a party of six and they seated us immediately. The restaurant appeared clean, was well lit and had adequate seating. Our server was patient with us and knowledgeable of the menu. While we were initially waiting for our entrees, we did get tortillas and salsa to snack on. We also added queso. I would have loved it if we had small plates to put the chips on because we were all reaching into the middle of the table to snack on this one small basket of tortilla chips, and the first batch they gave us seemed as if someone had crunched them all up and then sprinkled them into the basket because there were not a lot of full tortilla chips in it. The second batch was a little better, but it was still a bit of a turn-off. I ordered a chicken quesadilla no guacamole. Everyone's food order was correct on arrival except for mine. So I had to wait for my quesadilla. The wait was not worth it at all. Hands down the WORST quesadilla I ever had. Way too much cheese, no seasoning and visually unappealing. The rest of the table seemed to enjoyed the items they ordered but we all agreed we wouldn't return. While dining a mariachi band walks around to the tables taking requests. For $20 they will play a selection of your choice. They were personable so we paid for two selections. Unfortunately the experience was mediocre so I don't plan on returning. read more

What a mistake. There's so many good restaurants i greatly regret stopping at this one. The salsa should be labeled ketchup. I "up graded" my tacos to chicken fajita. It came out with dry boiled chicken on store bought tortillas. I've never had to pay for such bland mush before. Zero seasoning or spice. This is the quality one should expect in an old white nursing home. I had two bites of this garbage and I'm mad at myself for paying for the whole meal. Yasmina is a very sweet person but did nothing in the way of recovery. I told her it was terrible and only could stomach two bites. "Awe that sucks. Here's your bill." I had one night in this city and I can't believe how poorly i chose for my one dinner. Save your money. Oatmeal is much cheaper and has the same luster. read more

I was on the fence about trying this Restaurant purely because it was on the Riverwalk and therefore I felt it was a tourist trap. That may be the case, but I have to say the food was outstanding. I got a true taste of Tex Mex cuisine!!!The portions are gigantic and delicious.. It's a family run restaurant and is the oldest on the Riverwalk. It opened in 1946. I sat out by the river and watched the world go by as I tucked into a very savory TexMex Platter... OMG... I'd say 4000 calories... and I didn't need to eat for the rest of the night!! Someone at the Convention Center recommended this place and it WAS closer than some other options, but seriously, keep walking by this place to somewhere better. My co-worker got the shrimp tacos and they asked avocados or cabbage. Well, who knew the cabbage was dry-ass undressed cabbage. No lime, no vinegar, no mayo, no nothing (is that a double negative?). It was disappointing for sure, but the shrimp wasn't bad. I had the dinner platter which had a lot of food: Crunchy Taco - Delicious and ate that first so it stayed crispy Tamale - Dry AF Masa and small AF too. Yuck! Cheese Nachos - Tiny plate with queso, and they were good (not pictured) Chile con Carne - Dry AF Meat even WITH the sauce (which was flavorful) Cheese Enchilada - Delicious and the best thing there Rice and Beans - Standard Fare I didn't finish the plate, but it was a lot of food.
