Great place if you want to sit by the riverfront, people watch, with a couple margaritas. It's one of the more affordable options given the location without it being a chain restaurant. There were multiple hostesses ready to seat you and the service was quick and attentive. The food was mediocre. Nothing to write home about, but being by the river and having mariachi bands coming around the seating area definitely made the food taste better. - Chips and salsa were given off the bat and the pico de gallo was fresh and had a good kick. - Shrimp Tacos $14.50: Came with 2 on corn tortillas with a choice of slaw or corn salsa, poblano sauce, and rice/beans. For the amount of shrimp they gave, this was a bargain. Shrimp was perfectly cooked but needed more umph, and the side of poblano sauce was flat and bland. - Skinny Margarita $9: Even for opting out of the sour mix by doing so, it still tasted like premade mix. - Watermelon Agua Fresca $5: Highly recommend. Now unto the food- The highlight for me was the cheese enchilada (pictured in the deluxe dinner plate). The tacos were also pretty good but it didn't stand out. The guacamole salad was interesting (in a good way). There was balsamic vinegar dressing in the middle & it added a nice touch. Service was great! Located on the Riverwalk, one of the oldest restaurants on the Riverwalk. Defiantly a tourist area and we were happy to partake. They had musicians who would come and ask if you'd like music played, $20 a song. As well as a photographer who could take your picture and provide you with a few different options for purchase, $10 a photo. Not necessary, but when in Rome we figured why not get the full experience. The musicians were great! Played wonderfully and were charming. The photos were a little invasive, they could have timed their approach better, but none the less they were kind as well. Neither the musicians nor the photographer were pushy or expectant, they provided prices up front without being asked, which I greatly appreciated. We were able to walk in without a reservation, on the weekday at 5:30PM. No wait and the food came out timely. Food: it's Tex-mex. After the 104 degree walk outside, we really just wanted something light and refreshing. The Taco Salad with their house lime dressing with shrimp was perfect, vegetables were crunchy and the taco shell wasn't stale. Crispy Taco's were good, simple yet effective. Overall the food is simple and basic, worth the price. If you're looking for some extra's for touristy items, maybe to impress out of town guests, this place could meet that need, and it's not to far from the mall, so it's not a far walk. read more

I have been coming here for years. One of the better Mexican options on the riverwalk. Yes it's a little touristy but the food is good, the prices are reasonable, the servers are friendly, the view is great, and the roaming mariachis are a nice touch. Get a margarita. Any flavor, any size. I like the mango personally. If you have a wait for a table, the margarita will help you forget you are waiting. It is always busy but I never feel rushed out the door. Staying at the Hyatt Grand around the corner, we took a stroll down the river walk. As we had many options for a good meal we chose Casa Rio based on their history as the first business to open on the River walk. The seating area out on the river looked very nice, but we were there on one of the hottest days of the year, so we opted to eat indoors with their air conditioning. It's an old restaurant (dating back to the 1940s), so it's not your typical modern restaurant. However, I liked the old school vibes and colorful setting. The food was very authentic, and everyone in our party enjoyed their meals. I had the green chicken enchiladas, which were great. The margaritas were very tasty. This was a pleasant surprise. This adorable family owned restaurant sat directly accords the river from our hotel. The colorful umbrellas are eye catching and add to the atmosphere. Even though we made eye contact over a half dozen times, where I was trying to get his attention, he was not interested. I eventually had to get a "managers" attention to ask to pay. As far as the food goes, it was OK. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. Hot, fresh, but lacked any seasoning or flavor whatsoever. I'm sure there's plenty of good restaurants around San Antonio, but it certainly would've been nice to have decent service and a flavorful meal in a beautiful setting. Well, sometimes you focus on food, and sometimes you have a great location and hope that people won't notice the food. Unfortunately, Casa Rio seems to focus on their great location rather than the food. Our party of five was road weary after traveling in, and we'd walked about three quarters of a mile from our AirBNB, so we were ready to eat, and Casa Rio was one of the first spots we came across with immediate availability on a nice Friday evening. The staff was warm and friendly, and things started off well with chips and salsa. Drinks were a mixed bag, with one margarita tasting like it was a virgin, but another seemed to have half the bottle of tequila in it. My wife and I ordered combo fajitas with chicken and steak. The steak was sliced thin and was tender, but the chicken was more uneven and a bit rubbery in places. The meats were served on a plate with onions but almost no peppers, and the temperature was warm at best (definitely no sizzle). We had to actually ask for tortillas, and the request netted very pedestrian flour tortillas that tasted more like the bag they probably came in. If there was a bright spot, the rice and beans were fairly good, but they couldn't overcome the other food issues. Honestly, I'd find another place to have Tex Mex on the Riverwalk; there are a number of places that may not be as big as this one, but there's definitely better food to be had. read more
