This place was very disappointing. After hearing so many great things from friends, I was not pleased with a few things. First of all the service was bad. One thing that should never be part of the Mexican restaurant experience is unfriendly service! Our waiter never smiled and didn't greet us warmly. Also he was not attentive. Several times me and my friend were wondering where he had gone to. At one point we had to get help from another waiter because he wouldn't come to our table. When we told the other waiter that he hadn't been by in a long time he said that "he was in another room", as if that explanation was supposed to make things better. Sometimes when the food is excellent I can forget about lackluster service. However the food left a lot to be desired. I got "Chihuahua Style Fajitas" and got a plate with a barely any meat. It was mostly onions and peppers, which is fine, but when you're dining at a not-so-cheap place you expect to get an adequate amount of meat. Not just this, but the chicken was overcooked and didn't taste very fresh. It wasn't tender. Other food items that weren't impressive: the corn tortillas. We ordered these and they came on a plate, and not in a tortilla warmer, which would be the more traditional and considerate way. Also they seemed to have been warmed up in a microwave! The "baked cheese with poblano peppers" was tasty though. But again, it had a very small amount of peppers. The serving of rice and beans that came with my meal was also on the small side. Another good things was the "Agua de Jamaica". It tasted like it was really brewed in house. It was, surprisingly, unsweet, but that is probably a good thing since most places' Agua de Jamaica tastes like Jamaica Kool-Aid. The last thing I will express frustration about is the location. One must enter the place through an alley way! Not only that, but the entrance is awkward and I actually tripped while coming out because the ground by the entrance has gaps that are not easily visible due to poor lighting. And if you're on a wheelchair, forget about this place. The entrance is completely not ADA compliant. Save money and frustration. Go to Taqueria Mexico in Waltham, or if you can't travel far, visit Sol Azteca in Brookline, which has actually fresh and authentic Mexican food, and friendly service. read more

I don't know why its taken me so long to get over to Casa Romero. Maybe its because It's in an alley behind Newbury St and could be considered one of the great hidden gems of Boston. Now that I've been once, you could say that I'm a changed man. I will never go anywhere else for traditional Mexican in Boston (not like I have a lot of options.) We started off our meals with some chips/salsa and gauc. The chips were fresh, the salsa was amazing. It had just the right amount of cilantro. While the gauc wasn't made table side, whatever they did to it in the back resulted in the perfect flavor combinations that left me wanting more. After the chips/salsa/gauc were demolished, the Pesole came out. Oh my god, I have died and gone to heaven. This was my first experience with pesole and cant imagine going back to the Casa and not getting it again. The soup was so flavorful and I loved all the little condiments you can add to your soup. Just thinking about it, I can almost taste it again. For my entree I went with the enchiladas poblano. It was enchiladas with rice/ beans and possibly the most succulent mole sauce I've ever eaten in my life. I was trying to identify all the flavors in the mole but I couldn't, there were just too many and I couldn't stop stuffing my face long enough to analyze all the flavors. Each member of my party had a patron margarita and I couldn't have made this drink any better myself. It was the perfect accompaniment to all this tasty food. While this place was a little more expensive than what I'm used to paying for Mexican food, I was OK with it. OMG OMG OMG. This is probably the best meal out that I've had since I've moved to Boston. Granted, I've only lived in Boston for a week... but believe me, this place was good! The decor was SO cute. As you can tell from the other reviews, the entrance is tucked away on a little alley, and you walk into a basement restaurant. The decor was so warm and Mexican (but not trite, tropical Acapulco Mexican) and all of the seating was so close together, but I never really felt like I was squeezed in too tight. The servers were all really nice and attentive. I got a vegetarian enchilada with cactus in it and red sauce, and it was all so tasty! I too must start with a disclaimer; I am from Texas and grew up eating fantastic Mexican food my entire life. That being said, Casa Romero was decent. The one exemplary thing about the meal was the ceviche. It was absolutely delicious! My friend had the Enchiladas verdes, which was very BLAH. I had the Tilapia Veracruz style, and it was actually very good. I am thinking they may specialize in Mexican seafood as there menu was very heavy in fish and it seemed to be what there were better at executing. Unfortunately, our waiter was TERRIBLE!!! I was visiting the are for work and we were looking for a good Mexican joint. This was a locally recommended spot that was supposedly great. I would give it a solid "ehh" at best. Casa Romero is the perfect little Mexican restaurant that I am so so excited I came across this weekend! It is tucked away down a side alley in Back Bay. As soon as I walked in the small door, stepped down inside, I fell in love! It has quite an authentic feel. Small and intimate, the restaurant delivers everything you want out of a Mexican restaurant. Came here with a group of 5 people and were sat right away with no reservations. The servers are very polite and attentive. Always kept our glasses and chips and salsa filled. The sangria was deeelicious! Guac was great, a bit small, but still a good choice for an app. Their fajitas were also tasty. Their tortillas are definitely made in-house and came out fresh and hot. Every appetizer, entree and dessert is menu size. I really don't know how nobody knows about this gem. I've been there quite the number of times on Sundays and it's never been full! WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE DOING? GET OUT THERE AND TRY IT. It's also good every other day. I went here for Valentines Day with my boyfriend and I am amazed to see the rating as low as it is. Staff was very attentive, nice ambiance and the food was awesome. Guacomole was super fresh, my enchiladas were delish and so were our drinks. I moved here from Texas almost four years ago and I have been missing the abundance of Mexican food options found in my prior city, Austin. Two words: Wave Off We thought this place was going to be great with a charming alley way basement entrance and some excellent yelp reviews. The three of us started out with the "famous" margaritas. They were small, strong and not good. Maybe it was bad tequila. Not sure. The chips were stale. for apps we had ceviche and guacamole. The ceviche had some bad fish taste in it. Something in the mix was rotten. The guacamole was OK. The avocados were not ripe enough. Try Ole grill for great guac. As for the meals we had Fajita chicken, mole chicken and another chicken dish. The chicken in the fajita I had was boiled or something in a stew, not on a sizzling platter like all other fajitas I've had elsewhere. Taste was bland and not worth it. Two small non-fresh tortillas were served with it. As for service, it started out OK and then got bad. We asked the server for a Dos Equis and a lime. Another server brought the beer only. He was asked for a lime also. He did not bring it. After 5 min. We caught the first server and asked him. He sent the second server back with a cut up lemon not a lime. When the bill came, it took 15 min for them to grab our credit card. Lucky that the 3 of us could split the 2 chocolates they provided with the check... We obviously skipped dessert and coffee. Price was very high for bad food and service. Not recommended at all. Ole Grill and Border cafe are better bets. read more

I've always thought of casa Romero as one of Boston's secrets, which only myself and a few others have been privy too. The hidden entryway and cave like feeling definitely add to the atmosphere. Always a good time. We were there for a late dinner, so even though the restaurant was full, they seated us almost immediately. Server was really nice and friendly! My only wish has always been they change up their vegetarian entrees a bit , add more options. However they do have a wide variety of appetizers so we were able to get a wide enough selection for the table. I've always shied away from the cactus, but the bean and cheese enchilada are delicious. All the appetizers are great- my personal favorites are the mushrooms in spinach tortilla and cheese quesadilla. It's the best Mexican food in the area , kitchen closes at 11 though! read more

Perfect Margarita is always the way to go!!!! I always get the veggie quesadilla which is small, but good. The guac is always a must as well. Friends are always fans of the enchiladas! Great staff every time we go too! It gets busy though so I'd suggest reservations for evening or weekend visits. And summertime is nice on the outdoor patio with their unique and scrumptious sangria - if sangria is your thing... Overall very pleasant time every time I visit so I keep going back!!! read more

If you can get a seat in the courtyard, you're almost golden. The friendly and charming service puts you at ease with a warm feeling. The salsa is beyond fresh and has a nice zip. The menu is real Mexican food. Not like those restaurants where the majority of the menu is tacos, fajitas, burritos and enchiladas and 80% of the plate is rice and beans; then they may have two or three selections that appear to be authentic. I agree w/ others - food & cocktails are fantastic. It is on the pricer end. For 2 people we got 3 cocktails, 1 app (baked cheese), & 2 enchiladas, which cost $100. We actually ordered 2 apps but only 1 came and we were charged for both (which they easily fixed). The main dishes are between $25-30, cocktails around $15, and apps $15-20. The decor is also cute & I love the "whole in a wall" vibe. I knocked down a star because 1) the bathroom didn't have soap (come on, esp during a pandemic); 2) the music was really loud (and sometimes techno style, like why?) that my husband and I were basically yelling at each other; and 3) we were seated right in front of the employee/storage room. Well it's in an alleyway with a very small door at the very end of Newbury Street, so I can't imagine all the tourists knowing about this place. But it's very beautiful inside with the authentic furniture and artwork. I really liked it. I'm not really a Mexican-food person, but I loved the empanadas verde, and a friend had the empanadas mole which was also excellent. The guacamole was fresh and flavorful, and the cucumber margarita was so refreshing! As soon as you sit down, they serve you chips & salsa with their house-made hot sauce. I grew up in Texas, so I know a thing or two about Mexican food. This place is quite good. It isn't great like back home, but it is awesome by Boston standards. The decor is a bit hokey, and some (not all by any means) of the food is a bit different (from Tex-Mex), but I do go here once in a while. The drinks are great. Honestly, my only complaint about Casa Romero are its prices. Mexican food should be cheap, but they have to pay their Newbury St rent. Mediocre, unmemorable mojitos that the proper Mexican waiter effusively lauded. I ate a big plate of beef chunks on a hot plate because I was starving, and it was appropriately, but not unexpectedly, succulent. The ambiance is AMAZING. OMFG. That's why I give it four stars. You have to go step down at the entrance, effectively going downstairs into the basement, where there are no windows...but there are no need for windows. It is so beautiful. The tables are art. The lighting is flattering. Gorgeous. Not at all cheap. Space is small so it's a bit of a squeeze. Thankfully, we went when it was only half full, so I was able to maneuver out even after my waistline doubled from dinner. This place is a hidden Back Bay local GEM I tell you! Love Mexican and sick of hitting up your same spot? Not only is the food top notch and ever so flavorful but the overall experience is by far ravable. Located on the corner of Glouster and a back alley way between Newbury and Commonwealth Ave., the entrance is hidden and you wouldn't have a clue it existed. The ambiance, decor, and quaint setting captures culture and makes you feel like you are in the home of Romero, literally. You walk in and the owner, Romero greets you behind the coat check in his suit and welcomes you to his 'home'. Guacamole was killer and make sure you drink a Dos Equis or Modelo WITH a side sipping tequila, Patron Silver preferably. Enchiladas Verdes were amazing as were the Chicken Quesadillas that my buddy ordered. I assure you the experience is one you can't find anywhere else in the Back Bay. We weren't aware that C.Romero had been closed for awhile (water damage from burst pipes at the closed/moved L'Espalier above, apparently), and happened in on the night of the reopening this weekend. It was really hopping and totally full. Things I liked: - We were seven, and had made a reservation for 7:00. In spite of the restaurant being full, our table was ready and we were seated immediately. - There is a nice new bar just as you enter the dining area, so if you did have a wait for a table, you could get a drink while waiting. - Good salsa with lots of cilantro served with nice hot chips almost immediately upon being seated. - Good margaritas. They pack a punch! - A very good crunchy salad with chayote, jicama, and oranges over greens. - The appetizers! I wasn't very hungry, so ordered the chile relleno app as my entree, and it was perfect: perfectly cheesy, perfectly smoky, and perfectly cooked. Oh mama. There were others that sounded excellent too. - The frijoles!. Technically, I didn't get any because I just ordered the app, but I helped myself to those of everyone else who ordered full entrees and was silly enough not to finish their beans. - The decor has been redone, right down to the floors. It is still warm and welcoming and nice, as it was, but does seem fresher. I really like the way it feels. - Service. The hostess and wait staff are friendly and efficient and knowledgeable about the menu, even the water pourer. What I didn't like - The water! It wasn't cold enough and the glasses were too small. No visible ice. I'm of a certain age and like a nice big glass of icy cold water. They did keep refilling as needed (that's good) but it just wasn't cold. Even though I had had only a salad and appetizer (oh, well, and all those chips) I was too full for dessert. I'll try the flan next time, I promise. On Saturday night, a group of nine ladies (myself included) made Casa Romero our first stop on a night of bachelorette debauchery. Our lovely bride specifically asked for Casa Romero stating that it is her "favorite restaurant in Boston." I love Mexican food and I love Casa Romero (I can't believe it took repeated visits for me to finally realize that I hadn't reviewed the place before!). What I love: The hidden alley doorway that makes it seem like you know about this little city gem and no one else does. The sub-basement level restaurant that somehow exudes both warmth and charm. The low ceilings and small dining room make for some intimate elbow rubbing. Diesel margaritas that will surely knock your socks off (or your pants - if you have a couple). Amazing staff and service - always aiming to please. Every dish I've tried, I've loved. The guacamole is a must order, the Enchiladas Verdes is smothered in cheese and delicious, and the Enchiladas Vegetarianas en Salsa Verde o Poblana is the perfect little bean and cheese version of its big brother with just as much flavor. Finally, what truly made my night. Our server came up to me (I was sitting at the end of our long table) and asked me (make sure you a reading this in are Mexican accent), "We want to give her [the bride-to-be] a surprise. Can we bring out a penis or will she get upset?" I sat there for a minute because out of all nine girls, I had known the bride for the shortest amount of time (a couple years, sure, but enough to know whether or not she wanted a penis surprise, maybe not...I said yes anyway). A few minutes later -- the most amazing penis shaped ice cream sculpture came out, complete with whip cream on the tip and chocolate syrup drizzled all over the pair downstairs! We wanted to love it - a semi hidden place added to the excitement as we entered Saturday night to celebrate. Unfortunately the host was beyond rude when we explained we didn't have a reservation and told us the wait would be over 2 hours. We stepped outside and returned not too long after, deciding we didn't mind the long wait. Again, without recognizing us at all, rudely stated the wait would be 2 hours. We decided to sit in two awkward chairs until our table was ready -- we ordered drinks, which took what seemed like forever to arrive. Luckily, our table was ready much quicker and we sat down to enjoy our much anticipated meal. The guacamole was delicious, but at $7.50 a bit high priced. It's rare that something you find hidden in a dark, obscure alleyway in the middle of a cold and rainy night turns out to be a... good idea. Tucked away on a side-street of a side-street off of Newbury, Casa Romero is one of those places that takes you by complete surprise once you get past the door. Inside, it's warm, inviting, and most surprisingly, spacious and busy! The menu was excellent, offering plenty of options as far as entrees and drinks go. The sangrias was delightful and the service just as well. My meal was excellent, the kind that leaves you trying to pick up everything left on your plate at the end (I had a pork dish based on Chioptle and orange flavors). Our server was busy and invisible sometimes, but it was never a major problem. Again, it was busy, I'm not that jerk reviewer who is going to cry if my server doesn't balance 15 plates on his head. Went here with a friend to grab a bite to eat on a Wednesday night. The weather wasn't the greatest and we were there a bit on the early side so the restaurant wasn't super crowded and we were seated right away. Just a warning, I am a born and bred Californian so I have a high standard when it comes to Mexican food. To start, we were served chips with salsa. The chips and salsa weren't bad, but they were pretty bland in flavor overall and lacked any real interesting flavors. For my meal, I went with the house specialty pork. The orange and chipotle flavors seemed like a weird combination to me, but it actually sort of worked. Though the waiter said it was a bit more smoky than sweet, I would argue it was more sweet than smoky. Either way, it was a decent tasting dish--but not sure it was worth the $25 price tag. I also ordered a spicy strawberry margarita, which might have been a weird combination to start with--it was so syrupy that I didn't even taste a hint of tequila in it. It had some spice, but the flavors just didn't come together. Overall, this place has an authentic vibe that's hard to match in this city. Back then, I was lucky if I could afford a burrito from The Wrap, nevermind a meal at one of the reported nicest Mexican places in the area. Finally, I made my way to Casa Romero the other night to see what all the hoopla was about. Love that the entrance is in the alley. Love the ambiance when you walk in. Love that the space is now huge, since they took over L'Espalier's space. Love the little patio, even though it didn't have one iota of atmosphere. Service was great for us, at 8pm on a Friday night. We started with margaritas, which were decent. I've had better, but that didn't stop me from downing this one. The chips and salsa were fantastic. Some of the best salsa I've had. And I tell you, I am not a salsa lover. But this stuff, I gobbled it right up. Hubby had their "legendary signature dish" - the pork with some sort of sauce. I don't eat pork, but I tried the sauce. Holy moly - it was WAY too sweet. I had the fajitas, which were decent. Not really impressed though. Then we moved onto the sangria. Out of this world! In the end, we decided apart from the salsa, the food is so not worth it. His was too sweet, and the sauce ruined the dish. Mine was too boring and bland. It could've used a lot more flavor. Having just moved from LA, I was really hurting for a good Mexican place in Boston. This place is authentic in its food and atmosphere. It is located in an alley behind Newbury St, so I walked past it about 5 times before conceding and calling a friend who told me to "go into the dark alley." This place is about as upscale as a Mexican restaurant will get (which is still casual) and expensive compared with other places (which is still the same as most other American places) . I shared off the menu with a friend, and two other friends did the chefs tasting menu, which was about 5 or 6 courses, where the chef came out at the beginning to ask them what they like and dislike and he designed the courses for them, most items of which were not on the menu - all for only $35 (Compare that to a 6 course meal anywhere else!) The chef came to introduce all the courses and was really cool. Here's what I ate/tasted: - Chips/Salsa/Guac - Nothing special - Chicken Enchilada Verde - Pleasant, salsa needed more kick. - Chicken Medallions w/ Cactus/Mole - Good flavors, not overwhelming, chicken a tad overcooked but still good. - Cactus Salad - Tasty, clean, not mind blowing. - Shrimp ceviche - Nice flavor. - Some sort of taco with mushrooms - Really savory filling and crisp shell - The best thing of everything everyone ate. - Steak in Mole - Perfectly cooked, I liked but didn't love the base flavor of the steak the way my friends did. The part that really impressed us that without us ever telling them that it was one of our friend's birthday, the noticed it from our conversation, figured out whose birthday it was and just surprised us by bringing him a dessert with "Happy Birthday" written on it, and they gave complimentary desserts for the entire table, which I heard him say as a "nutilla pudding" with flan on the bottom with hazelnuts - the flavors were nice, though the pudding was a little thin. The nuts and flan went really well together. I think If I had had the tasting menu I would have liked it as well as my friends, who definitely would give it 5 stars. As a total dining experience, we had great service from the chef and the overall food quality was good and authentic, not easy to find in Boston for this food genre. ***UPDATE*** Did Chefs tasting menu this time - place was packed so didn't get as much special attention from the chef, who did stop by to say hi though. The items were all pretty tasty, but small. I enjoyed their margarita (on the stronger side) and pina colada, and liked that with the tasting menu they brought little shots of corona and negra modelo, as well as a some alcoholic coffee drink with cream. I joked w/ the waiter that we wanted another course before dessert and on walking past the kitchen, I ran into him and he said he had spoken to the chef and gotten us another course, and again they comped us desserts for my friends bday (for all 10 of us!) talk about good customer service! read more

Valentine's day ripoff... My girlfriend and I booked a table on Opentable and there was no mention of a Valentine's day special menu whatsoever. Once seated, we saw the outrageously priced $55 prix fixe special menu and we decided to order from the regular menu. Some fajitas and a pitcher of sangria would have done it. Maybe some guac. But no! The waiter came and rudely told us we MUST order from the Valentine's special menu. And of course, because you're there with a date, there is no way you are going to leave the place, especially when it's pouring snow outside. At this point you just have to accept your defeat. So we ordered the $55 menu. The first two courses included some soup and some chicken rolls (flautas). Ok tasting, but let's be honest, probably worth $10 together. Then for entree I had a filet mignon on a taco (!), and that was not too bad. And then for dessert some spicy caramel flan. Again, just OK tasting. Anyways, add the price of every item and it's very hard to reach $55 (820 pesos!!!). Add some drinks, it came up to $160 for two, pre-tip. Bad practices. read more

The vibe is kind of old-timey Italy, but the food is kind of upscale Chevy's. An interesting juxtaposition, and some very good Mexican food. I had the camarones a la diablo, which was very nice, but I was kind of left wanting more at the end of my meal. Sure, I had stuffed myself with all sorts of chips, salsa, guacamole, rice and beans, but the whole experienced could have used a little more ... spice. read more

Casa Romero is a pleasant, romantic venue for a couple or a group of friends to spend an evening. I highly recommend getting frozen margaritas, chips, guacamole, maybe an appetizer, and sitting on the private patio in its interior courtyard. The servers are welcoming and attentive, and the atmosphere is superb. The food is, in my opinion, uninteresting. Just skip it. I've been three times and gotten three different entrees (chicken mole enchiladas, enchiladas verde, and chicken with cilantro), and I can now confidently recommend that you put your $20 toward another carafe of sangria. It's difficult to describe what exactly makes the food bad - likely because mediocrity, by definition, means that there isn't much to say either way. I will stand by this review, though I feel bad for two reasons: 1.) The people are wonderful. To remedy that, let me focus for a moment on the positives: The homemade tortilla chips are some of the best in the city. The margaritas are top notch. The sangria is fine - though I don't think they let the fruit soak for very long in the wine, and it has a bit too much cinnamon in it for my taste. 2.) I don't have a better answer. There are almost no good Mexican places in this city. My favorite Mexican restaurant (Tacos El Charro) has excellent food (at rock bottom prices) but lacks ambiance. We come nearly every week, and almost always make a reservation in fear that this sweet little place will somehow become revealed and entirely overwhelmed. But somehow there is justice in the universe, or on this little corner. Hidden away behind Boston's precious and expensive L'Espalier, you could think for a moment that you've been taken to a Mexican speak easy as you descend the alley, turn left, and go down the stairs. On a summer's day try the lovely outdoor garden tables in back, and in the winter, the warmth and color, the little altars of blazing candles, will make you feel you've had a 90 minute respite from New England winter. I'll start with my sole complaint right at the beginning, and it's a mild one. The salsa is a trifle on the safe and boring side. But made entirely acceptable by a delicious Perfect Margarita or a bottle of Bohemia. I have to fight myself not to order, yet again, the chicken enchiladas verde. The sauce is amazing, creamy, peppery a hint of smoke. The chicken tender and remember when chicken tasted like CHICKEN!? This is pure comfort food and an antidote to the longest, most challenging work week. But be sure to check the daily specials and also give a try to the prix fixe meals. The set meals are refined, complex, and well paced, a perfect evening's meal well conceived by the chef. A great selections of tequilas, mexican beers and a juicy Sangria brightened by a nice lively bit of citrus rounds out the drinks. Staff is friendly and efficient, prices are moderate by Back Bay or South End standards. read more

This restaurant is super over priced and the food isn't very good. If you call ahead for a reservation ( ours was made a week in advance) expect to wait an extra 15 mins.. Overall, it's another Mexican restaurant that plays off people who don't know what real Mexican food tastes like and over charges for it. The sangria tastes like juice. Awesome. The perfect margarita, is perfect. Be warned stop at 2. I always get the pollo cilantro and it is yummy. The guacamole is great too. I love the decor, and since the flood/remodel they now have a little bar. I can taste the salsa right now! read more
