Super cute date spot! The place is pretty big and offers a lot of seating options (indoor and outdoor patio area). The beets salad was delicious and everything was really fresh and yummy. Took a friend for her birthday and had a nice evening but there's a few things that don't sit right and I can't recommend. 1. The drinks were so iced up there was barely anything in the glass. Expensive for what you're served. 2. The $32 skirt steak was a tough piece of meat drenched in demi glace. Served sliced with 3 tortillas and nothing else. So basically, tacos for double the price. Trust me, skip it. 3. We ordered guac, a $14 enchilada, tacos and steak for two people and they charged us a split fee. Super tacky. 4. Neither of us cared for the steak so we asked to take it home for my husband and the waiter added a $4 takeout fee to the check without any heads up. The atmosphere was nice and despite the overcharges the service was fine. My advice would be to skip the overpriced a la carte entrees and try happy hour. read more

The inside of the restaurant is very homely when in fact it could have been a home given the layout. Very nice rooms sectioned off that all have different elements added to them. The waitress was a bit stoic but warmed up throughout the night. We loved the food and enjoyed the portions. The brussel sprouts with the goat cheese were a hit as well as the duck confit enchilada. The hibiscus margarita did not deliver so much on flavor for me but it definitely did on alcohol content. I was very excited to try the kanpachi but I could not finish it. There was something ultra gingery even tingly that turned me off to it but it was a beautiful plate. For the most part it was a pleasant birthday dinner and will definitely be back to try their happy hour. read more

Came here last Friday evening at the tail end of their happy hour during the tropical storm/heat wave. Requested to sit outside and the host was super nice and concerned about us getting rained on. Best spicy mango margarita I've ever had. I personally like things with a real kick to it and theirs did not disappoint. For food, shared the duck confit tacos and the chicken mole with my BF. Chips were so good, our party of 5 got three baskets. Would definitely get the duck confit tacos again, and would try the Mexican Cornbread (tried a bit of my friend's dish and the short rib was amazing). Prices were a little high but ingredients seemed high quality and inflation is very real. Bummer that they charge you once you finish that first basket of chips, especially with groups. read more

I'm reading all of the other reviews and I'm wondering where my experience went wrong. Olga, our server, was spot on. Attentive and kind. The vibe was nice. Ample seating and a cute little place. I had high hopes for this place, but the food was very disappointing. The guacamole was an incredibly small portion for the price - with too much salt. The ceviche had literally no flavor. Bland and underwhelming, outside of the fresh veggies in it. If you love a more smokey mole - this place is for you. Everything else tasted the same. Short rib taquitos were drowning in a smoked black bean puree. Potatoes were cut way too small of a wedge to compare with the mole they were also drowned in. You cannot wedge a fingerling. It cooks down to nothing. The plantains were also cut too thin so when they were cooked, they were tiny dry pucks. The short rib taco with a butternut puree just became a bite of mushy mush with no flavor. It's a one and done for me, sadly. read more

Came here for my birthday last year and totally loved the food! Our favorite is the zucchini squash tacos! Service was great and attentive. I really like the ambiance here. It's a pretty restaurant but was my 3rd time and honestly it's very overpriced. They give you 1 enchilada for $14-15 with nothing on the side. This is a nice serene option for modern Mexican, in a nice converted Spanish style house tucked behind a line of buildings on Riverside - it's easy to miss. The duck confit tacos were very good - rich, subtly fruity, earthy. I was feeling like I should be good so I ordered the mixed salad, which was flavorful thanks to nice sharp radishes and a good helping of avocado to go with the lettuce. My wife enjoyed her brunch Mexican style hash very much, and a midday michelada hit the spot. Out the door for $55 after tip for two - not cheap but quite satisfying. Wow. What a hidden gem. My friend suggested we go here this evening and I'm so glad I know about this place now. It feels tucked away and we entered a beautifully designed elevated Mexican restaurant. They have a Happy Hour menu but the food is not that much cheaper than the main menu so I looked at everything. I really enjoyed my chips and salsa as I looked at the menu. The chips are definitely homemade and fresh, and the salsa roja is smoky and flavorful. We also got some fresh guacamole for the table. Really tasty margaritas and I'm not normally a margarita drinker. They definitely have skilled bartenders/mixologists that make them and there are no prepared mixes used. I had the margarita on special, which was tamarind. What a treat! These are small plates but filling. My friend had the chipotle tinga, my other friend had the spinach and mushroom flautas, and I had the duck confit enfrijoladas. We also had a side of brussel sprouts to share, that came with goat cheese. We all loved our food. My duck confit enfrijoladas were so tender and flavorful. And spicy!! Wow! I like the heat. The black bean purée was very flavorful and I appreciate the goat cheese to help cool down my mouth. The duck was cooked perfectly. They have a parking lot and plenty of street parking, and indoor and outdoor seating. Cool vibe and decor. First off this place is very beautiful and unique on the inside with cool artwork along the walls. The tortilla chips and salsa were nice and flavorful and the salsa complemented them nicely. The rice was also very flavorful and delicious. For my main meal I got the fried chicken tacos and they were good. I was expecting some extra flavor when our waiter said they were sweet, spicy, and tangy but there was no spice at all. We came here after a long(but fun) day at universal studio. They have some parking on the back but there is ample street parking. We came without reservations but were seated within 20min. They gave fresh chips and the salsa was spicy and good. There were very few veg options. I got a falutas plate to share and taco. Both were freshly made and very good. I've dined at Cascabel for a number of years and always enjoy my meals there. They have a robust happy hour menu, with a classic margarita and a number of discounted items from their regular food menu. Happy hour goes from 5-6:30pm on weeknights. I did notice this time around that the guacamole portion was disappointingly small, not sure if that's a recent change since I don't recall issues in the past. But the fried chicken taco was as good as I remember with honey and cabbage, and the steak taco was tasty as well with the chipotle aioli and roasted tomato. The flan was tasty, but I don't think the almond and chocolate crumble added much. And the happy hour margarita was a surprisingly large drink. They have a nice sized patio in addition to indoor dining. There is a lot, but it used to be valet so I've always parked on the street. I didn't see the valet this time so not sure if you can park in the lot these days for free. The spot fills up fast, so I'd recommend making a reservation. read more
