My wife and I had breakfast at this location. We opted for the breakfast special, pictured here. The food was served hot and promptly. The hash browns were browned to perfection. Crunchy on the outside and hot inside. Eggs were cooked as ordered. Price point was very good. Waitress was pleasant and attentive, kept my coffee cup full. Overall, it earned high marks from me. We just got back from staying at The Red Caboose Motel and we were fortunate enough to have a terrific place to eat just a few steps from our train car!! First, we loved (especially my grandson) eating in a train car!! The food was so good we ate there every morning for four days and even had dinner there!! My wife and I even enjoyed after dinner drinks at their bar. We were fortunate enough to meet Brittney! One minute she was our waitress, another she was our bartender and also an all-around problem solver!! She never left the place and remarkably, her smile never left her face nor did she lose her wonderful disposition!! The other waitresses, who were just as terrific, were Alexis, Aaliyah and Rhonda (please forgive me if I left someone out)!! It gets crowded so call for a reservation. You might even wait a bit for your food but it is worth the wait. They also have kiddie rides and an extensive gift shop! Came into restaurant with my little services dog in her carrying case, put her on chair next to me. She didn't make a sound as she is extremely well trained. I guess it was a waitress that said she had to go on the (dirty )floor. It was uncalled for and we will never come back. I asked her name and she would not give it to me. She said she didn't have to give me her name , black hair and glasses . The meatloaf was disgusting. Mushy! I ate one bite and sent it back. And then was charged for it! We've been there several times and each time we had a great experience. We've only been there for breakfast, but each time we have we never had to wait and sat right down. The prices on their breakfast menu seem to be very reasonable. The food is always good. It comes out hot and our wait staff has always been excellent. I have read some of the one and two star reviews, and to me they seem ridiculous. I'm not sure, I would go there for dinner, but to me breakfast is just fine. read more

Came in on a Monday for dinner a little after 5pm. There were a few diners so was able to be seated right away without reservations. Overall excellent service and food! Our server Lindsey was attentive, personable, and nice as was Becky the manager. While waiting for our order, glanced around the dining room and everything was neat, tidy, and clean and the lighting was pleasant and easy on the eyes. Ordered the chicken tenders that came with fries $11 and chicken jack cheese entree featuring two breasts topped with bbq sauce, cheese, and bacon served with two sides $22. Also had the caboose ale which was on tap $7 for a 23 ounce and an ipa $5 for a 12-oz bottle. The tenders were crispy and hot and the fries had a light batter. The star was the chicken breast which was juicy, well-seasoned, and had a lovely char-grilled flavor. I asked for the birch bbq sauce on the side and for the mashed potatoes swapped out for rice which they did at no extra charge. The portions were generous and ended up getting a doggy bag for leftovers. Do not be in a rush or uptight when you come here. While it's a casual atmosphere, there's a certain elegance and charm where you need to take it easy and just relax and enjoy your dining experience. While on a day trip to the Strasburg railroad, my family decided to stick with the train theme and eat at the Casey Jones restaurant where you are seated inside a train car. It's narrow and each table has 4 seats, so if you are a large party (like we were) you will be split up. The petting zoo out back has some very cute and friendly animals, which we enjoyed immensely during our long wait for a table. There is also a gift shop with toys, books, jams, jellies, etc. We were seated at 3 tables near each other, which was fine. The young lady waiting on us was very friendly and did a great job considering the party size. Unfortunately the food was just not good. I had a Rio Grande chicken sandwich, which was dry, tasted strange, and had too much char/burnt flavor on the chicken breast. The fries were fine. The chicken corn soup was thin and lacking flavor. Hubby did not enjoy his burger. Even the drinks tasted gross to me. The water and lemonade both tasted of detergent. The best bite I had was the corn fritters dipped in syrup that a family member ordered. That's the only thing I would suggest from the menu. I think this restaurant has a good thing going for it. It's niche, perfectly located for guests who have enjoyed the train ride, but it needs a major revamp in the food/drink department. read more

This place was just okay, for me anyway. I was pretty disappointed in the food I got - the chicken corn soup and a side salad. It wasn't bad - it just wasn't wow-worthy. I'm not really sure what I was expecting but my taste buds were pretty bored. In hindsight, I should have gotten the Reuben like two other people in my party got because that looked pretty banging. My dad got the chef salad and ate every bit. Anyway, it was a nice lunch just the same sitting there watching the trains and the Amish folks going by. We went after going to Thomas's day out (got there around 12:30 on a Sunday). Shockingly no wait at all!!! The host was a wonderful guy who explained the train car and turned on the rumble feature. Our server Wayne was absolutely top notch. This place clearly attracts families and the staff does so well with that. This review is made during covid-19 and for an early breakfast. I was provided indoor dining. There were limited seating and parties were places multiple tables away from each other. All of the staff had face masks on and treated us with care. There was also adequate ventilation. Staff was also very friendly. They answered many mundane questions that I had. My food also came out really fast. The food was pretty good for the price. Almost everything was pretty cheap and I don't think I saw anything that I would consider to be overpriced. Was it the best value that I have had? Nope, definitely not. The other reviewers are right in that the food was not amazing. It was a pretty standard breakfast. But for the price, location service, and speed, I think my review is pretty fair. I got the Maine Central with sausage and stuffed French toast with blueberries. The stuffed french toast was pretty good and the blueberry jam was very flavorful and complimented it very well. Hash browns were pretty standard. The pancakes were decent; nothing special. My food also arrived soon after ordering so I was able to eat and move on quickly. I enjoyed my breakfast overall and can recommend it for passing travelers. Just temper your expectations. I don't think this is a must visit travel destination. I would have rated it 5-stars if that was the case. I rated it 4-stars; a place that you should stop by if you are in the area in the morning and looking for breakfast. In other words, don't go out of your way to come here; come here if you are passing by anyway. I left this establishment satisfied and enjoyed my visit without any regrets. Maybe other reviewers had bad service, but my server was friendly and did a good job so I cannot factor bad service into my review. Aside from the food, the aesthetics of the place are pretty good. I enjoyed the view of the road next to the train carriage that you are sitting in. The greenery and rural landscape were very pleasing to the eye. The restrooms are located nearby and very clean as well. While I was cleaning my hands, I took a good look around the sink and surrounding areas. Restaurant seems to have gone downhill a bit since we were last there two years ago. Service was ok, but several small issues, like serving platters without utensils and having to flag someone down for them, etc. Food quality was okay, nothing exceptional, vegetables undercooked. Ordered take-out breakfast next morning, were told 20 minutes for pick up, had to wait almost one hour and they forgot half our order. My family has been coming to either stay at the RC and or to dine at Casey Jones since 2015. This visit was our first in three years due to COVID. Over the years we've recommended this motel and restaurant to 4 families, who have stayed there and loved it. This month we brought two more families for dinner at Casey Jones. They spent the entire meal telling me what a great place it is and how they plan to return to stay there and go to CJ to dine again. That decision changed after the abrupt way we were treated with the check. All of us left there shocked at the exchange upon paying. Since we were 3 families in the party of 12, we had asked about getting separate checks upon ordering. The server (who never gave us her name), assured us she would "figure it out" when the time came. When it came to paying, only one check was generated. The owner/manager Kat came over to address this with us. She was curt and argumentative. She didn't afford me the opportunity to speak and explain what had been said to the server at the start of the meal. Instead, she would cut me off with "can I finish speaking" even though she had said her piece. I saw how she interacted with other diners and it was not like this. Even though she was curt with them, she listened to what they had to say, but didn't do that with me. I heard her offer "what can I do to help here" to another table. Those words were never uttered with us. Instead, she stated that we were a large party with no notice and: we should have made a reservation we were informed only one check would be generated I saw nothing about the suggestion for reservations online when I looked at the website, which is why I didn't make one! I did see that they are "group friendly" though. Upon putting our name in, we were never told this would be a problem. The server said they would figure out how to do the splitting for us. I did notify the manager of this conversation and she denied her staff would say that. Throughout this exchange, the server stood by silently, probably fearful of contradicting her employer. When all is said and done, we won't be back here. Not because of the check not being split, but because of the abrasive manner in which we were treated. Business owners typically do their best to try to please and accommodate their patrons, apparently not at Casey Jones. So much for supporting this family owned business. Like most of the other reviews say-there are plenty of other places to eat in this area, go patronize any of those and don't bother here. Nothing noteworthy on the menu, it's the novelty of eating in a train car that was the draw for us. The attitude and lack of customer service simply isn't worth it. read more

We stumbled upon this place years ago on my daughter's birthday and it quickly became her favorite birthday tradition! We love petting the animals, seeing the trains drive by, and eating in the train car. My personal favorite part is the beautifully working Nickelodeon on the deck. The food was good and the service (once we sat down) was just fine. Nothing extraordinary, but certainly a good place to eat near the Strasburg Railroad. However, a few things impacted my visit there. First, we were a party of 6 on a Saturday evening, so we called ahead to make sure they could accommodate us. The person we talked to (a manager, I think?) said he could and that if we got there in the next 10-15 minutes, we would be seated. We gave our name and headed on our way. When we got there, we found the person we had talked to on the phone did not communicate with the host and therefore, the host gave our table away to another party of 6 without asking their name to confirm that they were the party that had called. The two of them proceeded to have a long discussion about this in front of us. Luckily, they were able to seat us not too long after that, so it was resolved. What made me uncomfortable was the gift shop. While I think it is totally ok for a campy restaurant in a tourist area to sell souvenirs related to the area (Lancaster-branded things, railroad-related items, etc.), I do not think it is ok for an establishment to sell political items (Trump 2024 hats, shirts, etc.). Of course, that is their choice, and they are permitted to do so. But I do not feel comfortable spending my money in a place that is choosing to politicize their restaurant and potentially isolate people who do not support that particular candidate. I find that to be an odd choice, and it makes me wonder about the morals/values of this family-owned business. I will not be patronizing there again. read more

As restaurants go, Casey Jones Restaurant is more novelty and gimmicky than restauranty. On weekends it gets packed with families, those exercising their weekend with children visitation rights and kids. Lots of kids. If you have kids, it's a good fun place to take them because kids today have little if any knowledge of what was once the glamor of rail travel. So, it's an exciting venture for them. The restaurant is in located in a railroad dining car, but being one who has actually traveled aboard the steam driven locomotives of yesterday, I can tell you that other than the railcar, there isn't any similarity. Back in the day, when you took the Penn Central out of Philly's 30th Street headed in route for Pittsburgh, you dined upon fresh oysters, fish and huge cuts of prime cut aged meats. Every gentleman wore a three piece suit and because everyone smoked, ashtrays were on every table. So, of course Casey Jones Restaurant has none of that as most of the ways of the past are simply no longer acceptable or for that matter, affordable today. As for food, what Casey Jones has is good enough but nothing to get excited about. People go to Casey Jones for the novelty of it, not the food. Indeed, sandwiches, wraps (no one had ever heard of a wrap in the days of steam engines) burgers and the like seem the basic mainstays. I order a pastrami and though it was good enough, not worthy of any further not. And, since I was in Lancaster, I of course had to treat myself to a slice of their wet bottom gooey molasses based Shoofly which, if you are into Shoofly, was really great but as I was advised had been outsource purchased. read more

Really different atmosphere and surprisingly great food! I had heard about Casey Jones from friends who stayed overnight in one of the train car hotel rooms and they raved about the food. The decor is train theme with a vintage vibe. I had chicken corn soup and the cheddar bacon chicken while my friend had shepherds pie. Both were large hearty servings and our "conductor" waiter was excellent despite a family with 4 picky children sitting behind us that needed a lot of attention. The view from the windows was wonderful - countryside and animals and buggies driving in the distance. We walked over to see the pigs and llama at their little petting zoo after eating. read more

And you can choose your seating by eating on the side, looking out to the road, or other side, looking in to the gift shop. I preferred looking out on to the road. I was seated in roughly about 5 minutes, this was about 9 a.m. in the morning, so there was only one other couple, and their with two waitresses, few minutes after I was seated, it started to get pretty packed, the service was somewhat slow, but that won't take away by how good the food was.. I had eggs, home fries, toast, and coffee. Everything was delicious and done just right, the coffee was actually some of the best I've had in a while, Just being able to eat in a train let alone is great!! Especially if you have kids they luv it. I would recommend anyone giving this good place to have breakfast brunch or dinner, this is the spot to go. read more

It's quaint. Dining in a railroad car. Spacing is tight and everyone can hear what everyone else is saying. As the crowd builds the noise can be overwhelming. Food was good but choices are limited. It's all touristy but fun. Don't take too many people because tables can't be moved.
