Wonderful place. Arrived just before closing-2:00. Greeted with a smile and enthusiasm. Ordered the catfish special, 4 pieces of catfish cooked to perfection. Sides- green beans and French fries. OMG! That was so good! Now I need a nap! I got the free chips and salsa with my Yelp check in. The salsa is fresh and flavorful. It's not the best ever, but it's good. I got the chicken fried chicken with both gravy's to sample. The traditional cream gravy is amazing. Just creamy goodness with the chicken and the mashed potatoes. The green chili gravy gave me pause, but it was good. Boy, it's got a bite and that's coming from someone who loves spicy! The chicken was fresh, not greasy. It was crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside, and perfectly seasoned. The mash was creamy and well seasoned. Nothing processed here, just pure potatoey perfection. The waitress recommended the broccoli cheese casserole and what a great call. I loved it. So cheesy and fresh. I also got a roll and it was okay. It might have been better if it had been warm, but I only ended up taking a couple bites. The coconut cream pie was great. The filling is very dense and would have been great with an entire glass of milk. There was not much crust on the bottom, so that was a little sad because I love crust. This is a very casual diner, that is super fast. More than likely, they have all the food premade in the back, kind of like a buffet style, probably to serve to the guest fast.. Even though it came out where earlier than anybody could ever serve it if they made it fresh and it probably was made far before we ordered it, it still was very, very good. read more

Passing through on a trip, I stopped at Cast Iron Grill first because it was just off of I-27. Going I had a vegetable plate and coming home, I had a bacon cheeseburger. Both were good. Pretty reasonable for today's standards. Waitress was a jewel. They have a showcase of homemade pies but when I was coming home, I didn't get there until 1:30 and almost all the pies were gone . I enjoyed lunch here with my son who attends Texas Tech. I had a very tasty Chicken Fried Chicken. Their gravy is a big winner and the sides (green beans and cole slaw) were winners! The cole slaw is very tasty and light. The green beans are done just right and the bacon they sneak in is excellent. My son wasn't hungry and asked for a BLT. Wow, good looking, thick bread, plenty of bacon (because, what else matters on a BLT?) and he was a happy camper! The pie looks amazing. I'm only giving this restaurant a three star review based on the quality of food. I know things are different in different locations. The chicken fried steak that I ordered was complete gristle and absolutely vomitus. Not something that I would recommend. With that said, that's what this restaurant is known for. On a more positive note. Our waitress was wonderful, helpful, and make sure we were taking good care of she kept our drinks full. She was quite nice. The cheesecake was OK but it was very dry. They prep the cheesecake every morning and then put it in the refrigerator with whatever topping they're serving that day. To me, that seems an odd way of doing it. It would prevent the food from drying out if you just kept it in its original container and didn't apply every slice and every topping to each piece. Welcome back to Texas!! It is so gosh dang difficult to find a great CHICKEN FRIED STEAK outside of Texas. The one here at CIG is just as big as the state!! Smothered in rich gravy goodness, this steak is hard to beat! I also tried the GREEN CHILE STEW. It had a nice heat. I love the New Mexican influence in the Lubbock food scene. Now to the important part - the dessert counter. First of all it was ravaged!! Lonely, empty spots that once held delicious pies and desserts was a disappointing sight. My vow is to get here early on my next visit to try one of their famous sweets. Updated review for my second trip: I was bummed out this trip. The server we had rushed us out the minute we sat down. She came by the table to ask how the food tasted twice before I had my first bite. She didn't allow us to order dessert since she had already printed our ticket. Tried this place on a whim, the fact that there was no parking, was a good sign. Service is always good, the food is always pretty good. The only negative is if you pay in cash, they round UP your bill to the nearest dollar and keep that difference out of your change. Probably not that big of a deal, but I wonder how much more they take in at the expense of the cash pay customers, by shorting the customer. It seems to be pretty common, as it happens every time. I'm assuming it's a policy, not too ethical in my opinion. But not a big enough deal to take issue with the server about. ALL the staff are fantastic, and thrilled to serve you. The food can't be beat and the prices are very reasonable. We had the Smothered Chicken, Green Chile Stew and the BBQ Beef Brisket Nachos. Great presentation, expertly prepared comfort food, with healthy portions. Out glasses of sweet tea never got below half full and they were happy to offer to-go cups. Save room for desert. This is a good breakfast choice and location the Buddy Holly center is across the street and opens at 10am. The Buddy Holly center is closed Mondays. Called at 10am to make sure they would be serving breakfast until 10:45 and was told YES only to arrive at 10:35 and be told they already closed it. VERY disappointed.
