OK as far as Mexican markets are concerned, however I come in a few times to look for Hispanic products and they have not had it in stock Or the merchandise has been over ripened. If your coming in to buy anything other than hispanic specific product, be prepared to get a lower quality product. Place is very clean and they seem to have a good takeout option, even though I've never taken advantage of it it seems to get a lot of traffic. I love this market! They have the best breakfast burrito and for only $1.99! It is huge and stuffed with red potatoes, eggs, and sausage! And of course your choice of salsa! Nice clean market located in windsor. Inside the market there is a counter where you can order a variety of mexican food and they cook to order. You can eat there (a couple of picnic type tables) or take it to go, which I usually do. I've come a couple times for the breakfast burritos, which are huge. The burritos are packed with egg, meat, and potatoes and I added some of their homemade salsa. Delish! The burritos are about $6.99 but they're so large, I could only eat half. But it was a great way to start off the day. They also have an early bird special M-F before 9:00 for the same burrito for $4.99. That's a really good deal for all the locals! read more

I might be confusing their breakfast burritos with the market on the other side of town. My husband had Castaneda's breakfast burrito and it didn't knock his socks off. (I don't yet have the heart to tell him I probably sent him to the wrong place!) Looks like they do a pretty sweet business in their dining area though. I'd like to step in during lunchtime on a weekday to see how busy they get. They offer specials like $1 taco & tecate tuesdays, and um... I don't drink tecate, but if I did, I'd SO be there! I work for a winery on Chalk Hill Rd and Castaneda's breakfast burritos have become of favorite of all in the office. You can't beat the $1.99 price in addition to the delicious combination of eggs, potatoes, sausage and salsa! We always ask for cheese as well which makes the burritos complete! It always makes for a great day in the office when we start with these. Not to mention they are so filling that we often don't even need to eat lunch. This little market has the best tasting and best priced rotisserie chicken in town! You get a juicy, seasoned rotisserie whole chicken and a choice of side (beans, vegetables, rice, fruit, etc) for $6.99! In a pinch, you can run in here to pick up fresh fruits or vegetables, seasonings, Mexican candies, or wonderful baked bread. Because the market is small, you might not find every brand you are used to looking for of products that larger stores have, but on the flip side you could discover something you don't find anywhere else (the dulce de leche churros are amazing) I hear they cook paella on the sidewalk on Fridays (but I haven't tried it) read more

Horrible service. They pulled a bait and switch on us. We went to confirm our Taco Tuesday order they had for $20. When we went to confirm. They jacked the price up to $40 right before pickup. The guy on the phone was rude and said "that ship has sailed" when it came to honoring the price when we placed the order a week ago. Terrible service and the food is not great either. So many better options in Windsor for great Mexican Food. This is a lesson learned while trying to save a buck. This place is Muy Caliente!! Alright, that was Gringo move, but I like this hidden gem. Castaneda's is a pretty good Mexican market with all the essentials (and it's in Windsor, think that helps business?). They have decent produce and a butcher shop and a bakery - everything you need to feel muy bueno and authentico. Here is the hidden secret - they have a small lunch counter that does the regular taco shop stuff. Pretty good and cheap. Don't go for the tacos though becase they make a torta Cubana that is the FREAKIN BOMB!!!!! I can't even believe that I am letting this one go on the net cause it is truley one of my back-pocket-top secret take-my-best-friend gems! Now this is not a normal or typical Cuban sandwich (one of the really great sandwiches of the world), but it is the best Windsor can offer and it is huge. A real gut buster (or stomach maggot as we like to call them - this is a term of endearment). It includes pastor, queso fresca and some things that I wont tell you because you would not buy it if I did.Trust me, it will knock your socks off and then some. Wanted to give some huge kudos to Jose Castaneda, owner of Castaneda's Market on Old Redwood Highway in Windsor and he is also known as "The Paella Guy". Our son's wedding took place over the Fathers Day weekend at The Anvil Ranch and Vineyard way out in Annapolis. There were 100 people attending, give or take a few and one of the featured dishes was the Paella from Jose. All I can say is that you need to sample some for yourself! Two huge Paella pans were filled with rice, peas, shrimp, clams, mussels, calamari, sausage, chicken, edible flowers and a HUGE salmon placed on top, simmering in the broth. That is what I could remember, I'm sure there was more. Served with bread and green salad. On Friday's at his market the paella is served from 4:30 pm (I think) till its sold out. There was plenty for everyone with many having second and third helpings. Just delicious. In addition to the pans of paella, Jose also had some great tasting appetizers to start. House cured Serrano ham, Spanish cheeses, marinated peppers and very yummy tortillas Espanolas (omelet with potatoes and chorizo). His market on Old Redwood Highway in Windsor has a large assortment of fresh vegetables, fruits as well as prepared foods. There is a small dining area and yesterday we had a breakfast burrito which was packed with eggs, sausage, potatoes and green salsa. Before 9:00 am it is $1.99 which is like stealing. On Friday's at his market that delicious paella is served from 4:30 pm (I think) till it is sold out. Jose is the consummate professional and a pleasure to deal with. Almost hate to tell you about my hidden spot but the La Cocina at Castanenda's marketplace is off the hook! Everything I've tried here has been so tasty, delicious and Fresh! From the Chiladillas to the Zopilote. I am NOT going to tell you what those dishes are you just going to have to come here and find out for yourself! I love going here for fresh produce. It is a lot smaller than most of the grocery stores but it is really a great place. The people that work here have the best customer service and you can ask them for anything and they won't get annoyed or irritated at helping you find what you need. And the best part about shopping here is the prices are a lot more reasonable than the other stores around here. Also, they have the best cakes and desserts here. I was so disappointed to return to Castanedas market after 1 year! I used to be a regular there since I worked across the street and had been ranting and raving to everyone about how great the Torta Cubana was and how this is the only place in Sonoma county I would ever order from, however this is no longer the case. I was surprised to see the price had increased to $10 but was willing to pay it because I thought it would be worth it. Once I got home and unwrapped the torta I noticed it was all bread and no meat! Not how I remember it! It was filled with lettuce and tomato to make up for the size and had a spoonful of meat! I called Castanedas that night to express my disappointment , the clerk was extremely apologetic and told me the owner would contact me the next day. It has been over a week and I have not heard back. Not going back and I won't be recommending this place to anyone! read more

I went to Castineda's Market last Saturday night with friends for the Paella Dinner. Wow, what a great meal at a great price. When when we got there, the table was set for us with a selection of olives on the table and a glass of Sangria was served. Prior to the paella, we were served gazpacho soup, salad, and an appetizer. All were excellent and seconds were served when we asked. Then came the main dish. His paella is outstanding with plenty of fish and vegetables. Again, we could have had seconds of the paella as well. We brought our own bottle of wine with us as there was no corkage fee for the wine, even though we could have had more of his sangria. I love this market. It is very clean and always has an excellent selection of fresh produce. The meat selection is fantastic although I feel the Carne Asada is a bit too fatty for my personal taste. The El Pastor that is all cut and marinaded to buy and prepare is FANTASTIC! Some of the best around and empresses my guests for Mexican Food dinners every time. I really love the fresh salsas (the HOT red salsa is EXCELLENT) and the fact that I can run in there, grab some groceries, meat, veggies, etc. a burrito for the starving kids for after school and containers of hot refried beans and mexican rice. I just have to go home, cook up the meat, warm the tortillas and BAM...dinner is served. The people that work there are always friendly, courteous and very helpful. I only have a couple of small complaints. One, the strong sweet smell that comes from the bakery within the store can be a bit overwhelming and almost nauseating at times. They LOVE using lots of plastic bags in this store to a point where it seems a little wasteful and irresponsible during a time when so many people are finally becoming aware of the problems that plastic bags can create for our environment. I hope that the owners will consider looking into some how trying to limit bagging and over bagging every items purchased in the meat and hot food departments and possibly consider having paper bag options in the produce. I know the owners are great supporters of the local community and not only donate countless volunteer hours to youth and service programs, but money and food as well. There is nothing better than local owners of local businesses, supporting local programs because that is what builds strong communities. Groceries and dinner all in one stop! Less expensive than the other grocery stores in town plus I save money shopping here by only buying what I really need. When I go to the other grocery stores I end up buying a bunch of junk that I shouldn't be eating anyway! The produce is top notch.....the spinach is left on the long stem so it stays fresh longer in your refridgerator etc. The prepared food they sell in the back is "Top Notch"....made to order hence the wait, so place your order when you get there, then shop.
