Came here for dinner with my parents while visiting Palm Springs. It was a GREAT dinner!! They have a cool outdoor courtyard that's well-aerated but covered so you feel a bit protected from the elements. Tables were well-spaced apart and everyone was wearing their masks. They started out by serving a delicious fresh bread that we couldn't get enough of. We then ordered the short ribs, salmon, paella, and a side of the chorizo corn. The portions were generous and we definitely were stuffed. Everything was well-seasoned and delicious! The paella in particular was smoky and had a great depth of flavor, I could eat it 10x over! Made a 7:30 reservation on a Saturday night; reservation was confirmed via text by OpenTable on Thursday before our reservation. Upon entering the restaurant, we were all struck by the noise level. Most tables were taken & there were 3 large groups. The ceilings were very high so noise just bounced around. However, it was easy to have a conversation at our table amongst the 4 of us. Service was good; fairly attentive. The food was great. They brought delicious, warm bread for the table and we ordered some Spanish olives that were slight spicy and delicious. The charred Spanish octupus was incredible!! The paella was delicious. Seafood, chicken, and chorizo. Dessert was a Basque cheesecake that was very good. Lighter and not as sweet as most cheesecakes. Served with berries on top. Other dishes at the table included the wedge salad and bone marrow as appetizers, steak entrees, and salted caramel custard for dessert. The salads were rated as good and the bone marrow as OK. Steak was a little tough but very tasty. The custard disappeared quickly; it was also a winner. Overall, a very good experience. Amazing takeout dinner!! When we picked up our order, the servers were extremely friendly and even gave us a box of their complimentary bread with pesto! We appreciate the thoughtfulness since it was takeout and not dine in. The seafood paella was bursting with flavors: slightly spicy, the right amount of saltiness, and a subtle tang from the limes. The rice was cooked perfectly and coated with all the delicious sauce. The amount of seafood and chicken was more than generous. I was so surprised at how tender all the seafood AND the chicken were! They got this one absolutely right. The bucatini with guanciale was delicious as well, with cheesy and creamy flavors from the Parmesan and egg. So far, my family and I have enjoyed the Halibut, Octopus, Ribeye, Paella, and Scallops. Each dish was incredibly fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. We ordered take-out tonight and were very happy with our dinner. We ordered their signature Paella, which had generous amounts of shrimp, chicken, chorizo sausage, mussels, and squid. One order is enough for two people. Then we offset the richness of the paella with two salads; the blue cheese wedge salad and added shrimp. The shrimp was grilled, which was a pleasant surprise. The other salad was the roasted beets with burrata, which was also very tasty and a great accompaniment to the paella. They added the bread and pesto sauce at no extra charge, which we really appreciated, it rounded out the meal perfectly. Catalan is a great choice for dining in and for takeout. We loved this place. Every single thing we had was great. The best thing was definitely the octopus, cooked perfectly, not too rubbery or fishy and paired so well with the hummus. My husband got the lamb and said it was succulent with a hint of truffle! The seafood pasta was not too heavy, was buttery and delicious, usually I struggle to finish pastas but this was so good it was hard to not. My husband and I went to this restaurant to celebrate my birthday, I chose this restaurant for the paella as it's my favorite dish, I was deeply disappointed when the dish came out 5 minutes after ordering, I have tasted many different paella dishes from different regions of Spain but never presented with anything like the mess I got, for staters there wasn't one mussel in the dish, no clams, a few shrimp, and the soggy rice, when I complained to the waiter he said "sorry I forgot to mention that we didn't have mussels." Catalan is located on restaurant row in the heart of Rancho Mirage. We made a reservation for 800pm with our out of town guests and we were warmly greeted and we were seated right away. As I scanned the interior of the restaurant, it has a European style decor with several huge paintings and is easy on the eyes. The place was packed and we were seated in the courtyard with the open air ceiling and the moon was out and the weather was nice. The tree in the middle of the courtyard was a very nice touch. It felt we were sitting in an old town country side. There was a gentleman playing the guitar and it added to the restaurant ambiance and the music he played was soothing to the ears. Check video! Elizabeth was our server and she was very friendly and very attentive to our group. We ordered drinks consisting of red wine, beers, passion fruit margarita with tajin on the edge, and grey goose vodka with pineapple juice. Our drinks came out pretty quickly and Elizabeth brought out bread with their signature pesto sauce which was different but very good. We loved it! Elizabeth, good job for taking care of us! Great service! We ordered the appetizer tapa plate that consisted of garlic shrimp, spanish chorizo, and goat cheese stuffed in a red bell pepper. By this time, I was getting a little tipsy. Lol! For our main, we ordered their signature paella and their seared scallops with Brussels sprouts. The paella was full of chicken, shrimp, chorizo, and mussels and was very good. I had paella before, but this was the restaurant's version and it was very tasty and the seafood fresh. I was really impressed with Cynthia. I think she was the manager/supervisor. I had two more guests join us for drinks and they arrived around 850pm and the restaurant closes at 900pm. We had a lovely anniversary dinner tonight at Catalan. The service was exceptional! I had gazpacho and divers scallops. My husband had the mixed Spanish olives and salmon. The gazpacho was delicious with a swirl of olive oil and finely minced herbs and cherry tomato halves in the center. The olives were delicious, a nice mix of hot and not so hot olives. My scallops were perfect, served on dollops of butternut squash puree, with a fresh corn mixture in the center. The salmon was grilled with a nice rub, served on spinach and white beans. We had the burned basque cheesecake for dessert which was much tastier and more interesting than the usual cheesecake. We received a caramel custard on the house for our anniversary. The patio was closed because it was still very warm. The restaurant is very comfortable and we had a very enjoyable evening. read more

The favorites were the lamb kabob (5/5) cooked perfectly medium rare over a bed of pickled veggies. Also the bone marrow (5/5) was rich and a huge portion... also highly recommended. We also enjoyed the jamon plate (4.5/5), cavatelli with beef cheek (4/5) and the shizito peppers (4/5). Drink prices are reasonable and don't forget to check-in on Yelp for 10% off your order. Valentines Day Terror, We arrived at 7:10 for 7:15 reservation. We didn't get seated til around 7:30 due to rain on Patio. Wwe were sat in the back next to the in/out door to Kitchen. Later we had to ask for silverware(how else to eat salads) and napkins. We got the 1st 2 courses and it was a while for the meal. No steak knife for the steak. Finished then ordered desert. They bought us the check a few minutes later and we hadn't got the deserts we were paying for and it took 45 minutes for the desert and they brought the wrong deserts. They took mine back but not my spouse's. The choc cheesecake slice was barely an inch wide at it's widest and tasted like paste. the food overall was very subpar. The portions had shrunk since our last visit. The owner was at the table next to us with his friends and caused more chaos than helping. Even his friends at his table were complaining. I still cannot believe how bad it was and a total of almost 3 hours to have a less than worth it meal. I loved this place before but never again. There was no decor for Valentines not even a flower or candle on the tables :-( read more

I was traveling to Phoenix from Los Angeles and stopped by Catalan for some Mediterranean food. The valet outside should've been a clue, but I definitely felt a bit underdressed upon entering because this isn't the usual Pita Pit atmosphere I'm used to. Once I adjusted to how nice the surroundings were, my friend and I sat down and we immediately ordered some drinks from their extensive drink menu. It was a refreshing break from the monotony of driving on the I-10. We ordered some appetizers which were good but not entirely memorable. It was the paella though that was done truly well. I've had paella in Spain before but Catalan's rendition was very delicious and arguably better. My mouth is watering as I think about it... I would definitely recommend it if you happen to be in the area. I'm not sure when I'm doing that drive again, but I hope to come through again soon. read more

Although the food was good, it was definitely over the price for the small portions we get. We ended up having to get more orders for each item because it was so small. The flavors were great, it was a very nice experience to try something different. It's my first time really eating this type of cusine. Our server was great. This place is absolutely wonderful. Three visits and there will be more. Highly recommend the octopus appetizer on hummus and pesto. It is done the best I've ever had anywhere. The lamb shanks are also the best I've had anywhere. My wife had, and shared some, scallops with chorizo. It was like magic in our mouths. So thrilled to know there's five star food and service in the desert. It has never been crowded, but they still request that you make reservation I think. I like to plan ahead. For my wife's milestone birthday (to be celebrated around Palm Sprigs/Palm Desert area) I "penciled" down restaurants for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I used a combination of what we wanted with reviews/ratings to make my choices. Catalan was not on that original list. However, once I tried to make reservations for a Sunday dinner, all of my top choices fell through. That's how we ended up at Catalan. And that ended up being a major disappointment. It wasn't the food -- the food (that we tried) was good. It wasn't the staff -- the staff was personable and friendly. It was the wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. We are a family of four: mom, dad, a pre-schooler, and a toddler. Catalan may seen kid-friendly, but beware. There is no kid menu. However, you can just ask for something and get a (massive) plate of chicken fingers with fries -- scolding hot. The "scolding hot" part is okay -- this way the kids can wait for their food to cool off, while mom and dad wait for their drinks and for an opportunity to place their order. It takes a while. It could take an hour. My wife got her glass of wine after about 10 minutes. My cocktail took another 10. Way to toast! Serving drinks to the two adults at the table 10 minutes apart is a trend that, I hope, never takes. The appetizers arrived relatively promptly and were good. There was a substitution -- beets instead of heirloom tomatoes in the "Heirloom Tomatoes and Burrata" dish. We love beets -- and that's a good thing, as there was not much burrata. I have to note that there were two different servers who offered to take our drinks and appetizers order. Great -- double coverage! But that, of course, leaves no coverage to take the main-course order. We were past the one-hour mark at the restaurant, filled with beets and chicken fingers from our kids' plates, when we decided to wrap it up. Our toddler lost interest in anything other than tossing his water cup on the floor. We lost interest in waiting. Our server finally came up and looked surprised that we asked for the check. Wasn't it a special occasion? Yes, it was. He brought an AMAZING dessert for my wife and the check. I tipped well. We will not be back. read more

My wife and I went here for a dinner. Usually, when the bread is great the food that follows is too. However, that wasn't really the case here. The bread, served with pesto sauce, was addictively great. Because of that we had a high anticipation for the paella mixta that we ordered. It had a good amount of ingredients, calamari, chicken, chorizos, shrimp, piquillo peppers on rice. It was good but not great. We weren't disappointed by the meal but based on the great bread we felt that it could have been better. The restaurant itself is very nice with high ceilings, nice artwork and a central courtyard covered by a tarp. The service was very good: prompt, efficient, friendly. Only a left-over of its former self. Went there with a business associate. My prior visit was pre-covid. Everything changed. The place looks dead from the outside. We went in anyway. No tapas menu. Short staffed and the waiter was not knowledgeable about the food. Dishes that sound original on the menu are not. The water tasted unfiltered. And for all of the missing food choices and quality of service, pricing is way too expensive. Very sad. Used to be a great restaurant. Great location. Not sure what happened. People here in the desert tend to get hammered and then decide to leave a "glorified" review only for people like me to be extremely disappointed. I wasn't drunk while I wrote this review! The diver Scallops were cooked to perfection and the ibérico ham charcuterie board was phenomenal!! The short rib also had soooo much flavor, I was shocked! I seen horrible comments on the waiters and to be honest, what the fuck were you guys talking about?? My cup never went half empty and they did not disturb me once while I stuffed my face.
