We tried a little but of everything and all of it was excellent! We had the Charred Deep Water Spanish Octopus and it was cooked to perfection. The hummus that came with it was delicious, we even had some left over to go with the complimentary bread. Then we tried the Chef's Mixed Tapas plate, the smoked sausage was good but the goat cheese stuffed piquillo peppers were my favorite! For dinner my husband had the Paella Mixta, it was very good. My sister had the Jidori Chicken, it was a HUGE portion and she loved it. I ordered the Cavatappi and beef cheek with truffle butter. It was AMAZING!! We sat in the atrium which has a beautiful ambience. If you plan on a long evening, the booths are probably more comfortable. We went on 12/24/23 for an early dinner. The ambiance is sterile and when the restaurant is full, it gets very loud. The menu prices are at the high end for dining out so we were anticipating something very special. The quality of the food was mediocre and when you factor in the price, it was worse than mediocre. I had a gift certificate from pre-COVID. It was not honored because they claim they are new owners and I guess they did not assume any desire for customer service or the previous owners' obligations. Holy cow. If I could shut this place down I would. We went for their Christmas dinner and it was easily the worst dining experience I have ever had. The service was terrible. The food was worse and it made one of us physically sick afterwards. We had carder salad to start and the salad was clearly a few pieces of bagged Romain lettuce with the saddest Parmesan cracker on top. The paella made me so sick I spent the night in the bathroom. The dessert tasted so bad that none of us ate it. The kids' meals were a bowl of cavatappi noodles that cost 35 dollars. The same noodles that cost 2.00 at any grocery store. To add insult to injury we spent 750 dollars for the 9 of us. We recommend none of the dishes and wish this place closed down. read more

Came for Christmas dinner, and they only have premix menu, which is fine. But the one we wanted is no longer available. So we got the fried chicken liver for everyone, and it tasted horrible. The wedge also tasted disgusted. The paella is super wet, I got the ribeye, which is also overcooked and they changed the golden potatoes to asparagus without letting me know. Firstly, the mussels had an abundance of shells. Then, the service was substandard as our plates kept piling up. Such great fun! We were greeted with a very warm reception and seated quickly. We ordered the paella and waited patiently as we devoured the bread and freshest fresh pesto. This is not a traditional paella, this is the "Catalan" paella. Absolutely delicious with tons of shrimp, chicken, and chorizo. We were eating our food with such delight and satisfaction that the couple at the next table told our server Brooke, they'll have what we're having. That Lady was reminiscing about past trips to Spain and Portugal, so we decided to look for a restaurant with a Spanish Mediterranean menu. Catalan came up. So we decided to have an adventure. The restaurant was nearly empty at 7pm. We were hesitant, but decided to sit down and try a few Tapas items. We tried some olives and grilled bone marrows with toast. Well that broke the ice, as both were tasty. As we were in the mood for steak we ordered the Tomahawk Steak, after quizzing Lorenzo our waiter. It was sized for two and came with two lettuce wedges and a side - we went for grilled Brussel sprouts. The wedges were crisp and tasty. The Tomahawk steak was presented cut on a platter with the bone. It was absolutely delicious! It was tender, juicy and Oh so savory. The steak and sprouts really accompanied each other. The Chief Ramon really knows how to grill. They also make their own limoncello, not too sweet with overtones of pepper; excellent after dinner. They have a good wine selection, next time and there will be a next time, that Lady and I will opt for a bottle of wine from Douro River area. read more

While the courtyard dining area was lovely and we enjoyed the bottle of wine we ordered, the food was mediocre and overpriced for the type and quality. In addition, the service was cold and lackluster. Dinner felt like a chore to finish rather than an experience to savor. This is a nice spot for Mediterranean food. Beet and burrata salad was superb. Iberico de belotta was splendid with that nutty acorn flavor. We also had the salted flan which was very light but flavorful. The only downside was the paella. Too much sauce and the rice was undercooked. Wish we got the bone marrow instead! read more

I am obsessed with this place. Their scallops with the melon salad is absolutely unbelievable. I never thought that I would like scallops with melon, but it honestly goes together so well like a PB&J. The paella had this nice smokey flavor to it, full of meat in there as well (paella mixta - so it had chorizo, chicken, shrimp & clams). The rice was cooked perfectly, and each bite was just getting better and better. Their house-made pesto is so good. I just want to put it on everything. I would 100% recommend getting the jamon iberico, it's NOT like prosciutto, it's BETTER. It like melts in your mouth. It has a nice nutty flavor. Since I went during the summer, they did not have live entertainment - but this is also their first summer being open! And it's too hot and too gross to sit on the patio, it was like oddly humid this summer. My friend ordered the watermelon margarita, and she said it was like one of her favorite margaritas. She said that you could definitely taste the tequila, which is a plus in my opinion and that you could also taste the watermelon. It was also a very pretty drink. Apparently the pomegranate and basil martini is super good too! Something to try next time :) Also, SAVE ROOM for the churros. They are filled with Nutella! They're honestly so good! If you are in your twenties and ASIAN DO NOT COME HERE! We went to on Wednesday July 3 to eat their ayce tapas on our anniversary. We ordered food at the bar and ordered some drinks as we waited for our food, I noticed the people around us were getting their food very fast yet our food did not arrive yet. It was when I saw the bartender take another tables order after us and they got their food before us that I felt discriminated and judged. Even though I had made eye contact with her several times, she would not check on us. I felt so discriminated and offended, because they assumed bc of our ethnicity and age we won't tip well, (which is not true, we tip very heavy for great service) but by treating us like that, you are self fulfilling what you assume of us. We asked for the check and canceled our order and left. She didn't apologize for her mistake and even blamed it on the couple next to us!! She asked them if they ordered their food, claiming it was for us, which was not true. How unprofessional!! I felt so upset by the way she treated us purely based on our age and ethnicity, I will never be going there again. Instead we went to Enzo's next door and left a far tip bc the service was 10000% better than Catalan. What a bummer.. read more

I so wish I could give this restaurant a good rating but here's the truth... My husband and I decided to share their signature salad with "jumbo" shrimp. What arrived was $1.25 worth of arugula, a few shavings of Mango and four medium size shrimp for $28. What a rip off. We should have known better when we walked in at 6:30 PM and there were only three other occupied tables in the restaurant. In one word: WOW! This place is a unique combination of old and new architecture and decor, our server Julian was taking care of several tables and he didn't miss anything. Now let's get to the food...awesome! The Mediterranean Wedge was super fresh, crisp, and delicious; the Paella was excellent, a close second to my wife's; and the shishito peppers were charred to perfection and super savory. Last but not least, the Catalan Caramel Cream Custard was PHENOMENAL! All in all, we loved this place and highly recommend it. HIDEOUS AND AWFUL. Why can't we give zero stars? I called to make a reservation & let the person know that it was my boyfriends birthday. I also wanted to bring our dog so asked for a seat in the patio & asked if it would be ok to bring the dog. "Absolutely" they said & confirmed the time/date and location on the patio. I almost booked the reservation on Open Table which, suspiciously, showed tons of availability at every half hour when other restaurants were totally booked (Sat night). I decided to call to be certain to get the table I wanted and to be sure we were all set since it was a special occasion... when we arrived it was packed which made me realize they try to appear that there is tons of avails to get an overly packed house. LAME. Sooo.. we arrive to a hostess who tells us that our table isn't ready but we can sit at the bar. Since we have a dog with us being seated at tall bar stools in a crowded bar wouldn't really work so we opt to wait instead. A moment later this young guy walks over to explain to us that they "don't take reservations" because there is "no way to know when people will finish their meal and leave a table". ?????????? Well, first off, you DO take reservations and you confirmed mine AND you are on Open Table as well... Secondly, somehow all of these restaurants globally have somehow cracked this remarkably complex code about how to manage RESERVATIONS and diners but not Catalan? It's a true mystery of the ages when it comes to how to handle the timing around schedule people for DINING? So we finally get seated in the worst table in the restaurant next to the kitchen doors. It is loud and LOTS of traffic in and out. My friend is having an anxiety attack and my dog is uncomfortable and can't relax because we are in the path of every waiter... soo.. my friend leaves to take a walk and I return back to the hostess who seems like she is scared, unempowered, unskilled (?), confused and just wants me to go away. I tell her that we reserved a table at the patio and that we would like that table. I see that this miracle of a table is now open and I would like it. She asks me to please wait a moment then whisks off some newly arrived older people to our table. Nonplussed I tell her about the comment her colleague made about not knowing how to coming and going/timing of diners and ask her to please fix this issue. She promises to move us as soon as possible but... I never hear from her again. No one comes to our table to fix the issue. Fail. The food was average. Some things were better than others. The wine was ABYSMAL though - like grade F swill. Please for the love of god do not even bother with the wine. We probably ordered 5 different ones trying to crack the code but each one was worse than the previous. We are wine drinkers but not wine snobs but we do know our wine. This wine was HORRENDOUS. I know this isn't LA or NYC (my homes) but people come here for a nice meal and expect some gracious and professional service, lovely food and drink. If you have diabetes, don't go to Catalan. You will pass out before you get to eat your food. I ordered their fish (Sole). Pls see attached photo. It is bathed in butter.Don't get me wrong, butter is good when used correctly. My fish is almost floating with butter. It tastes bland. Whatever herb/spices they put on top of that fish, it did not help because it's bitter. I only ate 1/4 part of it and did not bother to take it home. My son said their chicken milanese was too dry. My husband's pork loin was overcooked hence dry. I really want to think they are just having a bad day but when I read some of the reviews here, some are overrated or hyped. The good reviews must be one of their "good days".Those people who gave poor reviews, I couldn't help but agree with what they are saying because it's true. I won't go back and sorry I will never recommend this place to my friends. Also, don't we all deserve to hear from the owners/managers? They seem too passive about the bad reviews. I don't know how one can make a Spanish food without flavor, but wonder no more, order anything and you'll see. It is like a pastel painting of food. Sangria was good though, I was missing it. Also, when your table bill is about $220 on a casual Saturday, server could go to the trouble of packing that unfinished flavorless paella in the box for you, and not just hand you a cardboard box and leave. I just had the most wonderful appetizer, paella, dessert, and cocktails at Catalan in Rancho Mirage, CA. Their atrium is perfect for evening dining, no heaters were necessary. Cory's cocktails, superb as always, started us out. The mixed tapas appetizer fed two of us, starting our dining experience off with a bang! The paella reminded me of my visit to Barcelona, and my guest's scallops were delicious. We ended with churros filled with smooth chocolate. Yum. We had our wedding rehearsal dinner at Catalan and bought out the patio on 11/3/17. Cynthia and the staff were phenomenal. Cynthia was very helpful in creating the dinner menu and was responsive to all my calls and emails. On the day of, I was impressed on how beautiful the restaurant is, especially the patio. It had large doors that separate you from other guests so you have some privacy. And the food was amazing. The steak was perfectly cooked & the paella had deep, authentic flavor. For dessert, I had the sea salt caramel custard and rice pudding, both were heavenly. I also recommend the butternut squash soup. The restaurant offered to give us the sangria pitchers at happy hour prices which was really nice of them. We had a big party so waiting a little longer for our food was expected. We had a reservation on the patio, which isn't a patio. It is a courtyard and is effectively inside the building. It's roof is a nice tarp / cloth cover but there is no meaningful difference between it and 'inside'. We left without sitting down as it did not feel safe from a COVID perspective. The 'patio' and the restaurant were both very full. Several other patrons were having the same conversation about the inside patio as we left. Very disappointed as we were looking forward to a nice and safe dinner out. read more

The tapas we had this night were far better than the paella, which was very under-seasoned. Since we came for the paella, that was disappointing. Our friends said they've had the paella before, and it had been better. While loaded with proteins (chicken, sausage, shrimp and squid), the rice itself had almost no flavor (though the texture was good). I wonder what went wrong with the kitchen that night? And it had started so promising with delicious, warm bread served with a pesto instead of butter or oil. Very yummy. I enjoyed the empanadas (though our friends wished they had more pork and less cheese). We were totally divided on the duck fat potato chips.
