My husband and I went to Catalan for Valentine's Day. The vibe in the restaurant was so nice and romantic. Apparently, it's under new ownership and they're doing a fantastic job. This was such a cute spot and the service was outstanding. The menu felt very limited, nothing really stood out or sparked any interest and it was not Catalan at all and definitely no tapas. Maybe one or two things but mostly it was Italian. Only they changed the names. Like the Caesar salad was called romaine salad served with anchovy dressing and parmesan crisps. The carbonara was also trying so hard to sound mysterious, LOL! Based on the reviews we decided to trust the process and after going back and forth 100 times and looking up Yelp photos, we decided to go with the grilled octopus, the wedge salad, which was also called something goofy, and the chicken. Salad was too heavy on the blue cheese but the octopus and chicken were good. Not great. Not special in any way. Just a solid average good. The prices, however, were ridiculous even before we tasted the food so... all in all, cute spot and we're treated really well. But the undercover Italian food was meh. A Fantastic Culinary Experience at Catalan Restaurant Recently, I've had the opportunity to visit Catalan Restaurant a few times since they reopened under new ownership, and I can confidently say this establishment is one of the great restaurants in the Coachella Valley. I'm very particular about where I order seafood in the valley, and Catalan has absolutely exceeded my expectations. So far, I've had the paella mixta twice--a perfect combination of seafood, chicken, and sausage--and it is absolutely amazing. The creamy seafood pasta is delicious, and if you haven't tried beef bone marrow yet, I highly recommend ordering it as soon as you sit down. It pairs beautifully with the house bread and pesto provided at the beginning of your meal. Their steamed Carlsbad mussels are mouthwatering, and dipping the bread into the rich, flavorful broth is a must. I've also tried a few of their salads, which are good, but if you have to choose, go for the steamed clams or the bone marrow instead--you won't regret it. I'm already looking forward to my next visit, where I plan to try the braised beef short ribs or the bone-in pork chop. On top of the exceptional food, I've had the pleasure of meeting the new owners, Rafael and Angela, who are truly amazing people. You can tell that Rafael is passionate about creating an incredible dining experience for his guests. If you haven't been to Catalan Restaurant yet, I highly recommend giving it a try. Super disappointed to begin it took 20 mins or so to be greeted by I believe maybe a busser I don't even know who my server was then only half my party received water completely forgot the bread apps came way faster than my Diet Coke I was scared to order a cocktail. Based on the reviews, I really had high hopes to recreate the Tapas experience that i had in Madrid, but the food just ended up being ok. The bread and pesto dip that they start you out with was amazing! We then ordered the calamari and it was mostly batter. Same to be said for the chicken liver. The Piquillo cheese peppers were great, and so was the pumpkin squash soup. We ordered the mussels, and there was no flavor! There was no saffron or white wine in the sauce. The creamy rice pudding was sweet but the rice was al dente. The place, service, atmosphere, and hosts were amazing, but the food was just mediocre. read more

Wanted to have a "fancy" dinner while we were in the area and ended up here! It's definitely a place for a romantic date! The staff were attentive and friendly! To start, we ordered the Chef's mixed plate tapas, which included chorizo bilbao, garlic shrimp and goat cheese stuffed piquillo peppers. This was really good! For the entree, we shared the Tomohawk for two. It comes with two sides, a salad and for the other side, we chose potatoes. Portions are enough to have leftovers! A small family kind of place that's friendly and well decorated. Sit down and relax to a wide range of options from the menu. The olives in the appetizer section are house made and the best I've ever had. The charcuterie boards are not inexpensive, but very well portioned. The wine list is small, but the wines we selected (prosecco and syrah) were good. The paella's (seafood and meat) were very good and just the right size. No matter how full you are, don't skip the caramel with sea salt custard. Fantastic. If I ever go back to Palm Springs, this will be on my must go list. read more

The night of our visit - our service was practically non-existent (perhaps a staffing issue?) with no one at the helm overseeing the restaurant or dining experience. The food was just not special enough to me to justify the price - with nothing sticking out as exceptional. It's labeled as Mediterranean cuisine, but is more like Spanish cuisine. We ordered two paella, which I will start with. The seafood was delicious and the dish was flavorful, but the rice was way undercooked and came out lukewarm. Having said that at the end of meal, I mentioned it to our waiter who gladly reheated it and had the kitchen prepared it to go. The to-go even had a little bit more seafood and meats in them. It was wonderful the next day. The marinated octopus starter was delicious and prepared very well, soft and full of flavor. The seabass was very tender and cooked to perfection. I ordered the scallops which were U10 diver scallops (size), was also cooked perfectly. All of the garnishes/sides were delicious and the breads, that the waiter brought out was really fresh and hot. Saw many commercials on TV for this place and their paella. Since it is one of my favorite Spanish dishes I decides to go and give it a try. I started with the Romaine salad. When it came there was more rib than any leafy lettuce. There was very little dressing on it and was almost dry. I had to ask for more dressing. I could not believe the size of the salad. it was very small very little lettuce for $17. The bread they served with a pesto was excellent. I ordered the seafood paella. I asked how big it was and the server told me it was large and would most likely take some of it home. I thought it might be big since they were getting $47 for it. When it arrived, I could not believe how small it was. It came in the paella pan which was about 8" and the pan was not full. It came with 3 or 4 med. size shrimp and quite a bit of calamari. There was only 3 mussels, I had eaten much of it when I took my next bite, I heard and felt s crunch and noticed that one of the mussels was broken. Apparently I had bitten into a piece of the shell and it cut the inside of my lower lip. When I stopped eating it, the busboy was about to take it away and I informed him of the broken shell. He said he would tell the chief. He returned and was about to take the dish away again and I asked him if he told the chef and he said the chef said that the paella has shells in it. I relied BROKEN ONES? As my server passed by I stopped her and showed her the broken mussel shell and she apologized and went back to tell the chef again. I waited awhile till the manager came by and asked what was wrong. I told him the same story, and he offered me a dessert to compensate for the problem. I refused the offer because I just wanted to leave. He said abruptly do you want me to comp the meal? I replied whatever you think. He said I'll take 50% off the bill. I said that was fine and never got an apology for the incident. He made me feel like it was my fault. Since I managed restaurants for 20 many years, I felt he should have acted more caring and concerned that I cut my lip and make me feel that I would give them another try. Those are the words he should have said to me so that I would give them another try. All I can further say is no way in hell will I return based on his attitude. However, I must say, the hostess and my server were very nice. They should teach the manager how to act with their customers. Even at half price the paella was not worth it. After I returned home I realized he did not give me 50% off. The paella was $47 and the salad was $17 which comes to $64 and my check was $40, so what he really took off was $24. Either he doesn't know math or he was just being an ass. So I will never go back again and they lost my repeat business, and my plans to bring my Brazilian friends there when they come for the Christmas holidays. This manager needs to learn good customer service. And I make a much better one at home since I am a cook. After several hours my stomach started to get upset and queezy. I felt sick. read more

Was in town for a staycay and decided to see what the town had to offer by way of fine dining. Cue Catalan. For a weekend prime slot, there was no problem getting a reservation-- it wasn't packed by any means. But the place surely had a ton of locals dining there who didn't mind striking up a conversation with us. Was it obvious we were visiting due to our demeanor? Who knows. We ended up with a wedge salad, shishito peppers, brussels, scallops, and braised short ribs. All the food was good, and the cauliflower puree was a nice keto alternative to mashed potatoes. It was odd to me that the scallops were warm at best, but at least it was cooked right so I didn't raise a fuss. Service was great and the atmosphere was beautiful. Got into our reservation five minutes late and in five minutes past close and the host were very gracious and put a table together for us on date night. We were seated in a romantically lit beautiful outdoor patio with a covered tent. There was plenty of space between us and the nearest patrons. Service: The host and bartender immediately asked what we wanted to drink and was so upbeat. We started with two drinks on the menu: a Passion fruit margarita and bulls horn cocktail, both drinks the bartender recommended - but were very run-of-the-mill and watered down. The bartender offered to make us drinks off the menu so we got a huckleberry Mezcal Mojito and a pomegranate Basil martini, both unique flavors and delicious. Recommend!! Food wise recommend: octopus (worth the hype, the hummus was topped with some kind of chimichurri cherry pepper salad that was absolutely delicious. The octopus was cooked to perfection, you could taste the smoke from the grill, and there was no toughness), the paella had spice, zest and the seafood was flavorful. Bone marrow dish is questionable as the bone marrow wasn't seasoned well and shouldn't be served with marmalade. For dessert we were served a creme Catalan, which had bold caramel flavors and a rich creamy airy body topped with salt. This place has been our list for a while and decided to give it a try. We were told the Paella was worth trying. We also ordered mussels and the Octopus. The Octopus was the best of the three items ordered. It was tender and served on some hummus. Not great, but not terrible. The mussels were very fair. Salty and over cooked. The Paella...the worst I have ever tasted. Too salty and undercooked. Rice was still hard and nothing authentic. We also had some sangria which was watered down sad. I wish I could come up with something positive to say, but I can't. I am sorry we had this experience as we are always looking for great food. It would appear this place has lost its way. read more

Oh my gosh. When your expectations are dwarfed by how great the evening was. Octopus appy was tender, tasty and bountiful. Could sub as an entree. Burrata and beet how could you go wrong and gents loved the minestroni. I had lamb rare. Fabulous. WOW!! We were amazed by our dinner at Catalan! Cory was our server, and he was spot on with his recommendations for our dinner for four. He makes an amazing Sangria, it was absolutely delicious! Cory recommended and agreed on our choices of the following: Lamb chops, octopus, bone marrow, paella, Pork cheeks, arugula salad. For dessert we had the caramel cream custard and the rice pudding. Both were amazing! Everything we had was cooked to perfection and the sides that went with each dish were the perfect accompaniment! The bone marrow was the largest serving - 4 bone marrows with delicious grilled bread. The dishes were perfect for sharing. OMG and can I say the free bread that they serve with pesto is beyond amazing...I got my carb loading in tonight! I was really excited about going to this restaurant. We often pass by but never had a chance to dine. We just came Back from Spain a few months ago and we are missing the county, the culture, and the food. So, I decided to take my husband on a date here and the dinner started well. We ordered a bottle of Tempranillo and it was delicious. Although the place could use more Spanish "feel" it was fine especially with the delicious wine. We ordered the 36 oz tomahawk steak medium rare and seafood pasta. The steak came medium and the end parts medium well but we didn't send it back. The pasta was a bit under seasoned but again it was tasty enough. The experience would have ended well enough except for when we got the check. I had to ask for the menu and wine list again because my memory was telling me that the bottle of wine was $2 less than what was charged us and the steak was$90.00 but the check listed it as $120.00 Honest mistake? I hope so. But it just left a sour taste in my mouth and put a damper on an otherwise fine experience. Still undecided on whether I would give it another chance. With so many other options in Palm Springs... Let's see! read more

I enjoyed the ambiance, very rustic and classic elegance to it, I felt comfortable and relaxed in this atmosphere. Service was excellent, our waitress was a complete professional and was very helpful in explaining all the different dishes on the menu. I'm not use to this type of food, never really had anything like this before, but I was impressed with the presentation and of course the taste. Halibut was great, the paella was fantastic, especially the calamari, so tender. Really nice experience, terrific place for special occasions or just a date night, I loved it.
