We had a reservation to dine here and celebrate a birthday while in Palm Springs area. We had explored Joshua Tree earlier in the day, and weren't too dressed up for dinner. Coming during the weekend, we thought it'd be busy, but it wasn't when we arrived. The kind lady at the entrance greeted us and we could sit practically anywhere in the restaurant. The atmosphere was very clean and very well-curated. The servers were attentive, knowledgeable, and overall great. We ordered the chicken, which was the best I have ever had from a restaurant. The soft meat fell off the bone and melted in my mouth. It tasted so good and was spiced just right--not too spicy, not bland. We also had the hummus, which did not disappoint. It came in three different varieties, one of which I loved, but I couldn't tell what was in it. And the pesto was also delicious. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and we will definitely return when visiting the area. read more

Dietary restrictions? STAY AWAY So.. we had a reservation here for our 20th anniversary on Dec 25. Because I have a dairy allergy, I called ahead and asked if that was going to be a problem. The lady that answered the phone checked our reservation and said that there would be no issues at all and that there were plenty of options for me. Issues - there were. The lady on the phone failed to tell me it was a prix fixe evening and that indeed I was not going to be able to eat most of the dishes - especially no dessert. The server had NO IDEA what was in the food, so the manager came by. He was not apologetic at all about the fact that I was mis-informed. I ended up ordering the steak which was awfully under-seasoned. Clealry the kitchen did not know how to adapt the dish to be made without butter, which is pretty basic in my book. They are likely following recipes to the tee and cant adapt the dishes - more cooks than chefs. Note to Catalan: if you cant accommodate someones diet, that's OK - just dont lie about it and let them have a good meal elsewhere. read more

A trip to Barcelona without the airfare. Barcelona is one of my favorite places in the world, and this beautiful restaurant brought back very special memories of my time spent in this city. The decor speaks Mediterranean as does the interesting menu. The service was attentive and the owner visited our table to make sure our evening was enjoyable. My Lone Pine Ranch Braised Shortribs were tangy and rich served atop a creamed cauliflower risotto. My dinner guests both enjoyed their two different versions of Paella, one of seafood and shellfish and the other of Mediterranean style meats. The dessert highlight was Catalan Caramel Cream Custard. It was the perfect ending to an incredible meal. This is a great special occasion place. Thanks for bringing back many happy Barcelona memories. read more

I understand that they're under new management and our meal last night was of the same high quality happy to say. So why 4 stars?! I just can't forgive only 3 medium sized sea scallops for $45 when we're used to getting 5 and sometimes 6 jumbo scallops for $45!!!! Coordinated my birthday dinner with Darwin from Catalan and it was perfect! He heard my asks and was so accommodating. He found a sucking pig (pretty last minute) and updated me regularly about preparations for my special evening. The pig was accompanied with a variety of other meats, paella and pasta. We were looking forward to a meal here with the parents and it did not disappoint. We sat in the courtyard (atrium), which was lovely. Not too loud and not too crowded. No need for those heaters. Service was on point. All were friendly and accommodating. They let us take our time but they were still attentive; we never felt rushed. He and I started with the Spanish Old Fashioned - it was plenty strong, but not the best we've had. The parents started with a pitcher of the homemade sangria and really liked it. Enough that we helped them finish that first pitcher and share another. Food was also on point. We started with the Chef's Mixed Plate Tapas and we were all happy. Next, the parents shared the scallops over risotto, I had the cavatappi with beef cheeks and truffle butter, and he had pasta with a wonderful mix of seafood (can't remember the name). Regardless of how great the food is I would 100% visit this spot for the service alone. It's family owned and ran, and they are all so personable and make you feel welcome. The hospitality may be the best I've experienced, calling me by my first name and multiple people stopping in to make sure I was okay. Ordered scallops and risotto very good. And had Spanish beer which was also very tasty. From what I understood paella and scallops are the go to. My family loves this place and we visit the Palm Springs area just to eat here! There seems to be new ownership but the quality of the food has stayed the same. Everything was truly delicious! The staples we always get are the cavatappi pasta, bone marrow, and charcuterie board with iberico ham. All were so rich with flavor and so well thought out. We also tried the mussels this time and oh my gosh I would definitely get this again. The broth was so rich but also clean! Not the typical white wine cook, so it tasted so unique. I really liked the custard dessert too, but the cheesecake was a little too sweet for my family. The lemoncello drink was amazing too. All in all a great experience. We had good expectations, but the restaurant failed miserably. Service: * We got called earlier the day to confirm our reservation. We kindly asked the hostess to reserve any corner table to make it memorable for our guests. However, unfortunately that wasn't honored. We ended up getting a claustrophobic booth in a very noisy ambiance. It was suffocating; * Sequence of server-table miscommunication: We had asked to pace the courses accordingly, but one of our guests had the wedge salad and appetizers simultaneously. Also, we requested some extra ice cream scoops for each one from our party, but they didn't honor it; Food: * The best for a Spanish restaurant, after all, was the usual Mediterranean pitta bread with the hummus spread; * Paella was disgusting: raw squid, undercooked chicken, cold plate, excess of tomato paste, undercooked rice(tough to chew and grainy), and the most important for any paella: no crust. It was crystal clear the rice mixture was just thrown on the dish and quickly broiled; * As mentioned to the owner, the peach empanada dough was leather-hard; I don't know how the Spanish Tapas scene is in the PS area. Still, I don't recommend this place unless you are okay with just wine, pita, and hummus. Even though I'm just a grain of sand in the desert, I have no plans to return. read more

A beautiful Mediterranean restaurant with excellent attentive service in Rancho Mirage! It has its own parking lot in the front and back. I made us a reservation as we had tickets to WildNights at the Living Desert Zoo; the restaurant is a rough halfway point between downtown Palm Springs and the zoo. The romantic ambience pulled us in, I loved sitting in the courtyard warmed by heaters, decorated with string lights and lit up trees, surrounding a fountain-- transporting me back to Europe. They brought us complimentary bread and pesto dipping sauce-- fingerlicking good. We got some mocktails-- passion fruit pomegranate basil-- just excellent!! There are tapas on the menu (my vegetarian friends, scroll down to the sides for a variety of vegetable tapas all $10--) we went with shishito peppers which always brings back fond nights in Spain-- perfectly charred. For vegetarian entrees, the waiter let me know the paella is cooked in chicken or fish broth, so he offered to make me a pesto vegetable pasta or a creamy pasta-- I went with pesto and it did not disappoint!! It had a generous mix of vegetables inside-- peas, spinach, carrots, shiitake mushrooms! Very filling and satisfying. The waiter continued to check on us to make sure everything was good and we had everything we needed. Drinks were all average, some of our meals were simply not edible. The staff were all attentive, polite and helpful. A Fantastic Culinary Experience at Catalan Restaurant Recently, I've had the opportunity to visit Catalan Restaurant a few times since they reopened under new ownership, and I can confidently say this establishment is one of the great restaurants in the Coachella Valley. I'm very particular about where I order seafood in the valley, and Catalan has absolutely exceeded my expectations. So far, I've had the paella mixta twice--a perfect combination of seafood, chicken, and sausage--and it is absolutely amazing. The creamy seafood pasta is delicious, and if you haven't tried beef bone marrow yet, I highly recommend ordering it as soon as you sit down. It pairs beautifully with the house bread and pesto provided at the beginning of your meal. Their steamed Carlsbad mussels are mouthwatering, and dipping the bread into the rich, flavorful broth is a must. I've also tried a few of their salads, which are good, but if you have to choose, go for the steamed clams or the bone marrow instead--you won't regret it. I'm already looking forward to my next visit, where I plan to try the braised beef short ribs or the bone-in pork chop. On top of the exceptional food, I've had the pleasure of meeting the new owners, Rafael and Angela, who are truly amazing people. You can tell that Rafael is passionate about creating an incredible dining experience for his guests. If you haven't been to Catalan Restaurant yet, I highly recommend giving it a try. Was in the area for Thanksgiving and was looking for a restaurant that was open. I called Catalan and they were easily able to find me a table for dinner. It would have been nice if they have given me a heads up about the prix fixe option but it was too late since we were already seated. I think it was $88pp. The service was a bit slow, but our server was very friendly. The food wasn't the best, but I was thankful we were able to find a place that was open on a holiday. read more
