Its Dine-Out season, which means its time to explore new places and ditch the norms! For my 1st place of this year, I chose Catch 122. Catch 122 is quite lofty in appearance, much like meat & bread down the street. The location is quite troublesome to find parking, the best I could find on a sat evening was on cordova across from the public house.
Catch 122 to me is unique, its a love affair and a break-up at the same time, which reflects its rating. The docked marks are for service and entrees. The rest of the menu was fine.
For service, it was horrible. My friend and I were greeted and sat down by the owner; so good thus far. We looked at the menu for a good couple of minutes, then looked around for a waiter; not even a stare or word of acknowledgement. =Z This continues for a good 5-7 minutes? Until we got pretty frustrated and started waving our arms violently flagging down someone. The servers were confused as to whom section we belonged to and were promptly served with water and our orders taken there after. Understanding our frustration, our server offered us 2 drinks on the house. =)
The appetizers we've chosen were the smoked salmon and the wild boar. The smoked salmon was not what I had envisioned but it was pretty good nevertheless. It looks like a strip of baked salmon but its actually lightly smoked to a 'tataki' texture of cooked outside and raw inside. The wild boar terrine was quite good aswell, it was sweet and savoury served on a slice of brioche with red wine pickled onions and some greens.
On to entrees, which was the real kicker =( We both chose the arctic char which was a mistake. One of us should of taken another choice but we couldn't of foreseen the horrors that would await us in a couple of minutes. The char was pan seared on a bed of peas, roots? spuds?, and topped off with a couple of pieces of smoked mussels. Looks innocent enough, but man...there was way too many peas...it was like an ocean! The char was smoking hot but upon 'deeper' inspection, it revealed a completely raw center for pretty thin, tail-end piece of fish... horrified at the somewhat dead piece of fish infront of us, we quickly flagged down a server to either get us a new one or blast it with some fire. Our entrees came back on new plates and new pieces of fish. This time, it was the complete opposite; so cooked and tough, it was like eating gum. =( We reached an understanding that continuing to send back our entrees was probably not in our best interest as we might get some 'interest' back on our order.
DESSERT! says the pastry cook. Ive probably seen it all and tasted it all but hot damn, it was pretty hella good. We ordered a carrot cake and the caramel brownie ice cream. My friend literally licked her carrot cake plate, stating that its the BEST CARROT CAKE EVARRRR! The cake was deconstructed into the cake portion, carrot puree, and Quenelle of cream cheese mousse. The caramel chocolate brownie ice cream was quite innocent looking but secretly, it was lightly spiked with some whiskey. thanks to the whiskey, the hazelnut ice cream tasted great along with the grounded hazelnuts which gave it good texture.
The night ended with an apology by the owner about service, then proceeded to ask us for feedback. I pretty much said what I wrote here to him in hopes it would fix some of the problems in the near future. I was surprised but I give props to the owner for stepping up and being the bigger man in acknowledging where fault lies. Would I come back? Not sure. The desserts were great, so maybe if that was the only thing I was craving for and around the neighbourhood, then sure!
