A couple friends and I decided last minute to go out for dinner on Friday night. Knowing Vancouver a lot of our favourites would have very few tables available. Hopped onto opentable and saw this place had availability so we decided to take a chance.
When we arrived our table was ready and we got a great table by the window. The space was very open and spacious, it was nice not to be cramped in a restaurant with too many tables.
Cocktails: Had the "Mar-Tea-ni," an earl grey gin and egg white based cocktail. It was delicious! My 2nd cocktail was a special that night, forgot the name, it had peach puree and mint, and I think tequilla, it was also great - tasted like a peach mojito.
Appetizer: My friends and I shared The Platter ($30): Korean Style Hot & Sweet Fried Chicken on a bed of kale kimchi, Hot Smoked Salmon with dill creme fraiche, House-Cured Meat, Pork Terrine, House-Made Ricotta with a balsamic reduction, featured poutine: Pork Belly Poutine, Pickled Green Beans & Beets, Brioche, Crostinis, and Crackers. This was an AMAZING value! The quality of everything was spectacular, real great quality and care went into everything and it was sooo tasty. If I had to pick my favourite components of the platter they would have to be: the indulgent pork belly poutine (although the sear on the pork belly could've been a little deeper), and the Korean Fried Chicken on the very innovative Kale Kimchi. The appetizer is a good amount of food for 3 people that aren't terribly hungry.
Entree: Since we were kinda full we decided to opt to share 1 entree (Flat Iron Steak with rutabaga purée, potato gratin, and red wine caper jus $22), Ricotta Gnocchi with pickled mushroom, black pepper, and parmesan $9, and we couldn't help but order a 2nd portion of the Fried Chicken on kale kimchi $6. These prices were a steal! The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare, the rutabaga puree velvety, the gnocchi soooooo pillowy and the combination of pickeled mushrooms was perfect. Seasoning was spot on for all the dishes, with the exception of the gnocchi which was just needing a touch more salt. The 2nd round of Fried Chicken did not disappoint.
Dessert: If you know me, I always have room for dessert. I ordered the Almond Cake with green apple compote, house-made salted caramel ice-cream, and thyme. The cake was served warm, and you could tell it was freshly baked. It had a nice crust and a very tender crumb. Salted caramel ice-cream has never really been my thing. It often can be too cloyingly sweet or salty. This one was spot-on, you could tell it was salted caramel but it didn't take away from the delicate almond cake. The green apple compote, wasn't really a compote, it was just a brunoise of green apples, but it worked - it added a fresh component to the dessert. Lastly the addition of thyme was genius, slightly floral and made this dessert very unique. My friend however did not care for the tthyme. My friend's Lemon Parfait which was composed of lemon curd, graham crunch, vanilla cream served in a mason jar was just alright. He liked it but I didn't think it was innovative as the Almond Cake. For $8 each you couldn't go wrong.
Service: Our server was a very sweet guy. He was attentive, and when he was busy he would send a colleague over to check on us. There were a few large parties going on that night so paying for the bill took some time as all the portable debit/credit machines were being used but it wasn't a major issue at all. Food and drinks came out in a timely manner, and any hiccups that may have been encountered were easily masked by the delicious food.
Return?: ABSOLUTELY! There aren't many restaurants in Vancouver that take reservations during prime-time on weekends so this is a definite plus. And I can almost guarantee you that I'll be ordering the Fried Chicken again - as long as they still have it. read more
