Wow! We were so impressed! While recently staying at the hotel (which is also Beautiful by the way). We wandered into the restaurant, not expecting much, but we were blown away! First of all The shrimp in the shrimp cocktail were huge and perfectly cooked and chilled! My Steak was cooked perfectly! and just as I requested and My Husbands Halibut was perfect as well. To cap it all off the Chocolate mousse cake was unbelievable. We loved it so much we went back for breakfast the next morning and were not disappointed there either! I'm sorry to have to say this, but what a disappointment. Not their fault but Gavin made us sit outside in the weather rather than in the dining room. They could've put the tent on the ocean side of the building though. If you're gonna serve mediocre food and charge a lot, sometimes it's ok with a view. Unfortunately the clam chowder was super thick and goopy, not heated through, and pretty flavorless. The fish tacos were a highlight but nothing special. I hope they survive. We stopped through here for a late lunch while driving through the area. The area is beautiful, right on the coast with a view (go take a nice walk on the beach after your meal!). The staff were very nice, helpful and patient. The food, while good, was not significantly memorable. This is not a knock on its flavor--the food was decent, and worth another visit if I was in the area. The prices are comparable to other places nearby. I got to try several things: The clam chowder is flavorful and creamy (no grit, that's a plus!), the caesar salad was good (though I had to pick out some pieces of lettuce that were blackened on the edges...), but the fries, if not requested to be well done, are floppy and sad. The battered fish (fish&chips) could use a thicker coating of batter, but their portion size is more than fair. The coleslaw is mediocre at best (this had no impact on my rating level--it's incredibly rare to find a good coleslaw...). Worth a visit, expect to be filled, but don't expect to be amazed. read more

But they have popcorn chicken that you can get at night, what's the difference in cooking? When I asked the waitress she said they already put the lunch chicken strips away.And now all I can get is the popcorn chicken appetizer.So I ordered them they should have been called dark meat chicken balls,I'm pretty sure they castrated a chicken deep fried it and served it up.It was nasty won't be back. read more

And what "chef" sends out a steak with A-1 on the plate? That's a perfect indicator they know they're serving trash. On top of my terrible dinner, my wife ordered the spaghetti with "bolognese". She sounded like an 80's commercial "where's the beef"? This was no bolognese sauce I've ever scene. Service was terrible! In fact, was pleasantly surprised and the food was better than, an unnamed restaurant we dined at in Morro Bay. Downfall was, they are adjacent to and serve room service to a dog friendly hotel, yet the restaurant is not dog friendly. Seriously need to change this and add a patio and better bar. read more

I only go here because of my late uncle. Whenever we visited Cambria and stayed overnight, we had to come here for breakfast. Food is not bad, not the greatest, but service is fast and polite. I tried almost everything on the menu. This time I got corned beef hash with hash browns and wheat toast. It was good. I had to put tabasco for heat of course. Behind the restaurant is a pretty scenery of the Pacific Ocean, and you can play some bean bag throws, chess etc. Cool place. read more

This is a hotel restaurant for the Cavalier Resort. I came here to eat breakfast twice because the nearby Sands by the Sea hotel gives breakfast vouchers for this locale. I had the Cavalier stack and the Sands continental breakfast. The stack of pancakes was yummy, but super basic. I would've expected something more exciting for that price. The continental breakfast was not continental breakfast, instead it was two slices of toast and two tiny jam packets. Definitely underwhelming. Finally, I cut an extra star because of how we were treated by the staff. While the front person was okay, our server was patronizing and denied our request to eat outside. She argued that it's too cold and damp, despite there being a whole tent with tables out in front. I don't know where she learned to treat customers like that. read more

Disappointing Thanksgiving dinner. French onion soup had a sweetened taste, too many croutons, onions that seemed out a box, not recently caramelized like the real thing, and the cheese was mixed in instead of melted on top. We didn't even want to order food here because of the rude waitress/hostess. We chose this place because it's next to the hotel, but wow staff is completely different. We immediately felt like an inconvenience to the waitress/hostess ( older Hispanic lady) she just pointed to a booth and said here is water. Came back and said " do you want to order?" A good hotel restaurant is nearly as difficult to find as a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, but when you're staying at the fantastic Cavalier Oceanfront Resort, in San Simeon, CA, you don't need to look any further than the Cavalier Restaurant, to enjoy delicious food, served by friendly people, at reasonable, by San Simeon standards, prices. If you're moblilty-challenged, or don't feel like walking, rejoice! ... as Cavalier Restaurant is located near the office of the Cavalier Oceanfront Resort. Cavalier Restaurant is co-located with Cavalier Inn, and a couple other hotels, but unlike many hotel restaurants, Cavalier Restaurant serves excellent food at good prices, especially considering the out-of-the-way location on California's central coast, and the fact that San Simeon is a tourist destination. The first page of the dinner menu features many classic offerings. The menu at Cavalier Restaurant is constantly evolving and changing, and every time we've paid a visit, we've been treated to an updated menu. Neither my wife nor I were in the mood for a "full" dinner, so we settled on the second page of the dinner menu, and both of us ordered the "Hearst Ranch Burger," along with an order of fries. From the "Sandwiches and Burgers" section of the dinner menu, we both chose a "Hearst Ranch Burger," and an order of fries. Cavalier's menu offers many choices of sides if you're not in the mood for fries, as besides fries, you can choose from sweet potato fries, coleslaw, diced fruit or quinoa. We both chose fries... The burger starts out with a large - possibly one third pound - beef patty. This is no ordinary beef patty, as it comes from the nearby and local Hearst Ranch located just across the highway from San Simeon, known for their grass-fed beef, free range and all natural beef. The beef patty is juicy, perfectly seasoned, and perfectly cooked. It's placed on a large, fresh, buttered and toasted roll, and features just the right bun-to- meat ratio, which is one of the crucial factors for a great burger. Between the meat and the bun, you get fresh lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle slices. We couldn't resist ordering optional bacon... you can't blame us, as we were on vacation! When you bite into this burger, you know you're enjoying an amazing burger, as the flavor and juice just oooozes out! Not only was the burger a taste sensation, but the meat, bacon and bun were warm, while the lettuce, tomato onion and pickle slices were cold... the combination of hot and cold helps to make this an outstanding burger. The smoky goodness of the bacon added to the overall great taste sensation of the "Hearst Ranch Burger,' but didn't overpower the meat, and the fresh farnishes. This burger was so good that neither of us added any mustard or ketchup. The fries were large cut - steak fries - and cooked to a golden brown, and a tender, white inside. My wife didn't care for the large size of the fries, but I absolutely went crazy over my fries, and, along with the burger, completely demolished them. Such a great burger and fries at Cavalier Restaurant! The Cavalier Restaurant is a gem, as it's at the hotel, so there is no walking, the food is delicious, it's reasonably - by San Simeon standards - priced, and the people are friendly. No wonder when we stay at the Cavalier Oceanfront Resort, we enjoy several meals at the Cavalier Restaurant! read more

We came on a Sunday night for dinner. We ordered the ribeye steak and the Mediterranean white fish with a side of clam chowder. Clam chowder was creamy and tasty. We loved it. Steak was good. It came with baby potatoes - crispy on the outside and well-seasoned. Yumm! The whitefish was okay. It was a bit dry and didn't have much flavor. Fish didn't taste fresh. The rice was dry, and grilled asparagus were a bit burnt. I would have given this place 3 stars only but service was efficient and staff were friendly and fast. Over Thanksgiving weekend 2020, I stayed at the small motel next door, Sands by the Sea. This was during more strict covid related shut downs so dining options were limited. Given this was open until 9 and convenient to bring back take out to the room quickly, I tried it for dinner one night. Nothing too special-veggie burger and fries. Everything was well made and had good portions. They also were open for breakfast where I was given vouchers from my hotel for toast and coffee or juice each morning. The staff were very friendly and were masked, making sure patrons were socially distanced and sanitizing surfaces. I'd come back during non Covid times and have a full breakfast there as a sit down customer-it did have a full menu of your standard breakfast fare. Nice option if you're staying along the coast-not much was currently open along that stretch of Highway 1 in San Simeon so they definitely came through for a late dinner on my vacation. Food was ok. I could do better. I ordered the Greek omelette and it was suspect. They have tea but it is not on the menu. The server forgot us and lost our ticket. My wife noticed others were eating even though they arrived after us. We waited a little longer but the entire staff was busy eating in the kitchen. We could see them if we looked in that direction. We saw customers waiting to be seated but no one noticed while they were eating. I work at a cafe and we only take a break one person at a time. This was sort of a place where why bother to do your work. The food was okay but not really acceptable for serving. All this on top of being part of a so called resort. Another visit might yield better service and maybe ordering meat might work out better but I will skip it. read more

We stay at the Cavalier Resort and other hotels in the San Simeon quite often, and the Cavalier Restaurant is the best closest restaurant around without having to driving into Cambria. We've done indoor sit down (pre-covid) and more recently had them deliver via room service. Service is always excellent and speedy. They used to have a prime rib on the menu that was really good; not sure if that's been taken off the menu since the pandemic as we did not see it on the menu for our most recent stay. The fried chicken is surprisingly very good and definitely the dish my husband likes to order when we visit. Fish and chips was a little disappointing on quality of fish; especially being a restaurant on the coast, but was still okay. Chowder is also really good too! All in all, we've come back to eat at the Cavalier because of the convince and service, I would recommend this place if you're in the area. read more
