I am so happy that I found John & Kenny. I don't know how many times I passed by their salon through out the years until my curiosity finally bit the bullet. After reading all the reviews, I was excited to give it try and I sure am glad that I did. John is an exceptional stylist and gave me the best hair cut of my life. I have curly hair and he was not shy to give me the layers I needed in order to get the curls looking beautiful and sexy. Kenny is also wildly talented and did an amazing coloring job with my hair. He has a technique that gave me full coverage and has managed to keep my grays away for the last 3 weeks which is unheard of for me as I usually have grays by now. I love the ambiance of this salon with its eclectic artistic elegant decor and how it makes me feel, like I'm having a "calgon take me away" moment, every time I step inside. I came into the salon today in a blue mood. So blue in fact that I considered changing my appointment; Netflix and a box of tissue were calling to me more than my scheduled trim. But the minute i entered the salon I realized that Celebs has a certain magic quality. Coming into the place feels like being invited into a good friend's home. Colorful overstuffed furniture mixes with elegant artwork, and there are always pastries and tea in the kitchen. Today I was handed a cup of green tea with apple slices and honey, and a small slice of carrot cake. But before I start sounding all "Ladies of the Canyon," let me just say that John Aguilar is one of the finest stylists I have ever encountered. It is almost mesmerizing watching him work his craft with such care and precision. I would even go so far as to say that he is somewhat intuitive-- he seems to know what look I am aiming for before I tell him. I like that he uses celebrities as references..."Oh, so you kind of have that Cate Blanchette thing going on in that one move.." I left the salon today with my hair and my soul refreshed. read more

I took my daughter for her first time getting a cut with John And had a great experience. John is so accommodating and makes you feel so welcome when you step through the door. My daughter has very unruly hair and John did a cut that is not only adorable but very easy to style. He took the time to connect with her and had a great conversation with her. We also loved spending time with Bubba, Johns Great Dane. Her cut is so good that it looks great when she wakes up in the morning. My husband had a great cut by John yesterday. John and Kenny are a rare gem. They are honesty underrated and are true artists. I don't go to them often because I relocated but when I need to make sure my hair looks it's best I go to them. Kenny is an expert when it comes to coloring. My hair looks super heart and glossy. Now about John. I can honestly say that I've never gotten a better haircut than his haircuts. This place has a bit of mid-century time machine ambiance and vibe along with some Old Topanga Canyon style with a dash of Versailles countryside elegance yet with zero pretentiousness... My Mom has been going to John for over 30 years since the beginning of his career. She was temping in Santa Paula & stumbled upon his quaint little shop but loved him and his talent so much she's followed him to where he is now. Fast forward 30 years and I'm visiting home from Utah desperately needing to get rid of the fried seaweed living on top of my head. John was gracious enough to squeeze me in at the end of the day...a Saturday on a holiday (Memorial Day) weekend! He took his time and painstakingly whittled away at my frizzy, mid-back length hair "listening to what it did want to do and more importantly did NOT want to do" until I had the most exquisite cut that did what IT wanted to do with little to no help from us. My natural curls - and I have a ton - are happy, showing themselves off and I've never been treated more wonderfully. The icing on the cake was Bubba the shop's mascot. I lost my dog, my baby and companion of 12 years 5 days prior to our trip out here & Bubba picked up on it right away...he sat in my lap, loved on me & let me just love him and use him as the much needed cathartic I had gone without. Now my only question is...HOW on earth am I going to make it out here from Utah every 8-12 weeks for John to trim and shape up this curly mop of mine? read more

The owner and his staff are the most amazing hairdresser around and very very reasonable prices . It's disgusting the quality of work some salons do using cheap dyes and coloring but charging top price . John and his staff use organic products and work with you on pricing and cuts . Worst place ever. John was so rude. Maybe it's because I was using a Groupon. I had to wait 6 weeks to get an appointment. Once I showed up at my appointment time. I had to wait another hour and half. I would have been ok with it had he apologized. He was rude and not much of a personality. I have been going to Celebs almost exclusively for over 30 years. John cut my hair the first time 37 years ago before owning Celebs. He studied at Vidal Sassoon where he was able to cultivate his natural artistic ability. He has given me many different progressive cuts over the years. Sometimes I give him free reign on the style and other times I give him some input. He is open to any and all suggestions. I find most often it works best to let his experience translate my requests. His prices are competitive and worth every penny. I prefer to keep my hair short so I see him every 4-5 weeks. His cuts keep their integrity unlike other places where things start falling apart after a week or two. The salon is in a beautiful vintage building with detail and hardwood floors. John typically fills the air with aroma therapy and offers snacks, coffee, tea and even a warm small plate at times. I get my hair colored by Kenny first and then John cuts my hair. Kenny has much experience with the color process. My hair has been many shades of red, has had bold chunky color, high lights and I even had it lightened once to blond from brunette. I am open to many looks and Kenny never disappoints. He really takes his time to consult with me before each and every color process. He is very engaged throughout my every appointment and always makes me comfortable with food and drinks. He puts fresh citrus fruit in my tea and is just so caring. Megan is at the station adjacent to Kenny so I have seen her do some amazing cuts and color for her clients. She has done waxing for me and she does an excellent job. I have been getting my hair cut at Celebs for about two years now. Hair cuts are something that you typically get what you pay for. They charge a lot, but they also take a lot more time and do a better, more thorough job than most places. Just like with a massage place, a restaurant, anything, you pay more for 60 minutes than 30 minutes, you pay more for better ingredients and having the food prepared better, etc. I went to another salon somewhere in those two years and it was definitely more affordable and an adequate haircut, but I didn't feel like I looked as good as I did after going to Celebs. I've never seen Celebs use one of those "one on the sides and four on the top" electric shaver kinda things you'd find at a barber shop. It's always a meticulous scissor cut. You will leave there feeling like you spent a lot of time there, because it will have taken quite a bit longer than you are probably used to. They also have great personalities. I always leave Celebs looking AND feeling better than when I came in because they have such lighthearted and charming personalities. They joke around, have fun and are full of nice and genuine compliments and all around good conversation. If you are someone who would prefer to just come in and have a quiet haircut, they will respect that. If you are wanting to chat, they reciprocate good conversations. Before COVID-19, they have offered tea and snacks. If you have a cut or style that you are particularly fond of, you can tell them and they will do it. In my opinion, the best way to approach a haircut at Celebs is to come in and tell them to work their magic and artistry. Have them treat you like a blank canvas. They will get to know you and your hair type, the shape of your head, your personality, the clothes you are wearing, what job you do, your hobbies, etc and they will give you the best possible haircut. I have tried for 6 weeks to get an appointment from my Groupon voucher. The first call was returned by John the owner. He told me he would not honor the voucher and to get a refund from Groupon!? In my late 20's my hair suddenly turned curly... no perm needed curly. ugh. Since then I've had the hardest time finding a stylist that knows how to cut curly hair. Even with 'curly hair specialist' after their name, I've found it difficult to find a 'specialist' that can truly cut curly hair appropriately. By some miracle, my mom found John again. He had been our hair stylist when I was a teenager in a small town in Ventura County. Now, I don't ever want to leave him again. His cuts have taught me to embrace and even LOVE my curly hair! Celebs is more like a spa! I highly recommend this salon, I had an amazing experience! I was fed tamales, cupcakes, and homemade fruit tea (no cost). John, the stylist who dyed and cut my hair was so attentive and extremely hospitable; I felt like I was at a relatives home. John created a miracle by fixing my hair. I have stubborn Latina hair, that refuses to be blonde and for curls to stay in place and John was able to do the impossible and fix it. Before going to John at Celebs, my hair was orangutan orange with different colors mixed in and my hair had absolutely no style; my hair was a hot mess to say the least! John fixed my hair color and gave me a stylish haircut; I'm so happy I went to this salon. I recently had a haircut done by John. I came for just a trim and ended with choppy uneven layers, which i did not ask for. He was late, barely talked land did not care that i wasnt happy with the results. Overall unpleasant experience and now i need to grow out all that choppiness. read more

Celebs is my all-time favorite hair salon. Last night, for my appointment with John, he warmly greeted me with a beautiful cup of tea and a slice of delicious red velvet cake. He makes my hair look fantastic and I get compliments on it all the time. I used to fight with my hair, but he has made me absolutely love it! He is a true artist and has a passionate, dynamic spirit which is so refreshing. I have only been there twice (my last two haircuts) and I know that this is the only place I will ever go to. I have been searching for a good colorist since I moved to the area. After several misses a friend suggested Celebs. I was skeptical because of the name of the place...I am not a person who is a celebrity or one who hangs around celebrities. But I went and was very glad that I did. My hair is gorgeous, a color I have been trying to achieve for a long time, but no other stylist has been able to give me. In addition to being pleased with my hair, my experience in the salon was wonderful. The owner is John and he is truly a gem....very loving and sweet. Kenny, stopped by while I was there (a hairdresser who wasn't working today) was generous to take the time to go get me lunch. Ok I am sooo fussy about my hair it's incredible. I have been going to the same stylist for 25 years. But omg he is retiring. I moved from Southern California to Northern California but still had my perms and cuts down south cause he was so good. Just happen to be in the Santa Barbara area and was desperately looking for someone as good. Boy did I luck out! John is amazing. Probably one of the best perms ever! I waited to write this review to see how the cut grew out (the sign of a good cut). Three months later my hair looks great! John has been cutting my hair for probably more than 25 years! He is so good that no matter how far I have moved away -- and I mean far -- I have always returned to him. John is not just a stylist, he is an artist and a perfectionist. I currently travel 1 1/2 hours to come to Celebs from my home. That in itself should say something about how I value this salon. I have also had Kenny do my color and he does a beautiful job, both in choosing the right color and in the skill of applying it. Although nobody else has done my hair there, knowing John he would only hire dedicated and skilled stylists. When I go to a salon the place itself is also important to me, and Celebs is located in a beautiful historic building and decorated in a fun, eclectic style.
