Great selection of books! Love how they make reading fun. I think it's great what this bookstore brings to the neighborhood.

My siblings and I were visiting from out of town and decided to walk around this shopping center when we stumbled across a book store. Before even stepping a foot inside, an older caucasian woman rushed to the propped open door to block us from entering, asked if we had masks (we don't, the mandate has been lifted for months and we're vaccinated) and she told us to go buy some from Rite Aid before slamming the door in our faces and remained by the closed glass door until we walked away. There were no masking required signs posted, and the business didn't even offer any disposable masks or apologize for any inconvenience. My family and I would have worn a mask, no problem but the whole interaction felt extremely unwelcoming and unprofessional. Disappointing especially coming from a bookstore that seemed so inclusive and welcoming from the outside. Guess you really can't judge a book by its cover. We will not be returning. read more

We absolutely love Cellar Door. They offer a great selection of book clubs each month and even if we can't make it to the actual book club discussion, we enjoy reading their recommendations. There is a great selection of books in this store, and if there is ever a book you are looking for that they don't have in stock, they will order it for you. Linda has created such a welcoming space and everyone who works here is always super friendly and helpful. This is by far one of our favorite places in Riverside. read more

I've been to this bookstore about a dozen times. It's lovely and quaint and pleasant to visit. It's a small bookstore, but the kind of place my husband I like to support in our community. However, I only gave it two stars because I ordered a book from them about three months ago for my daughter. The book came in a week later but I never received a call. Then I called to check if the book was in and was told they would call me back and they never did. I went to the bookstore a few days ago to pick it up and it was there waiting for me. The second reason I'm only giving it two Stars is because of their mask policy. Don't get me wrong, I have no issues with them requiring a mask. In fact I fully support it, but I do have issues with their cavalier and slightly rude way of handling it. Most people are no longer wearing or carrying masks and if you're going to require masks, be thoughtful and have them on hand for those who don't have one. When I went in to pick up the book that we ordered three months ago, I didn't have a mask on me. When I asked if I could buy one from them, I was told that I could go next-door to the grocery store and buy a mask. So a good small bookstore with a decent selection of books, but the customer service could be better. read more

Personable, little book stores are hard to find, and this one is a gem. Located in a mall with quaint shops and restaurants, you come for an hour, but can spend a whole afternoon enjoying coffee, a good book and shopping. The employees at the store are friendly, energetic and helpful. We came in for Drag Queen story hour and had the best time. I highly recommend attending next time it is offered. We are definitely going to make it a family tradition. The store has an excellent selection of kids/teen books. My son wandered for 45 mins before he could decide on a book. If you are looking for a small business, with competitive prices and the feel of a small town business where everyone is family, this is the book store for you! read more

My friend and I had an appointment and went in 5 minutes late. My friend was looking for a particular book so I sat down because I was a bit dizzy from standing out in the heat. Five minutes later the owner walked up to me and my friend as we were discussing the book she wanted to buy and she told us we could only stay in the store 20 minutes which was five more minutes. There was no appointment after ours waiting to come in. She was rude and I am guessing mad because I set down. My friend paid for her book and we left. I will never go back. This is a wonderful book store. Independent and wonderful. If you or someone you you loves books, Celler Door Books is for you. A quaint store, but a nice selection of books, kids books. There is a nice table at celler door for sitting at to read your book. A must visit store for all your book needs. Great place to get any type of book you are looking for. Such a rare find this day in age! A truly independent bookstore, the owner is there pretty much everyday and is happy to talk with you and recommend a new great read! She really LOVES books and knows a thing or two about them since she is a former college English professor. The store is very cozy and warm, but is big enough to have an excellent selection of books. I think what really sets this place apart from the chain stores are the awesome activities that are held at the store. They have book signings, book readings, poetry readings, children storytimes, book clubs and writing clubs etc etc... I am sure they will continue to evolve and grow as the store does! We recently attended a book signing. I already had the book and was a little nervous about attending, but we were welcomed with open arms! The book signing with Jason Porath, author of "Rejected Princesses" and "Tough Mothers" (both great books), was amazing. We asked staff for similar book recommendations after and were impressed with their knowledge. There was a friendly dog wandering around, which we appreciated since some independent bookshops have had cats and allergies are an issue. I always love to shop and peruse local bookstores. Even before the pandemic local bookstores were becoming few and far between. There is nothing better then spending time the local bookstore. Having said that, since the outbreak shopping local bookstores has become so difficult. In a effort to continue supporting small businesses, it was so great to find a local bookstore that takes online orders. Sadly many don't simply because of size, staff, and availability. Cellar Door Books was one of the few that I have found that has the ability to make online purchases. The process was simple, prices are great, and I received regular updates on my order. After a very short delay (one book I ordered was on back order), I received my book order. I was so excited, like Christmas came early excited. Thank you so much Cellar Door Books. I loved your staff recommendations too (they recommend adult, YA, and kids books). I will definitely be purchasing more books from you in the future. This place is a treasure. I've gone in and told the owner whom I'm shopping for and a few books they've liked, and she's helped me choose numerous books that the recipient adored! Locally-owned independent bookstores are a rare gem these days, and so I make it a point to order from Cellar Door if I can at all avoid the website that shall not be named. It's worth ordering a little further in advance to know we're supporting a local business who stands by its values, including supporting and uplifting marginalized groups. Stopped in with my kids to grab my 9yo a couple of books and my daughter who is 4 had a cup of water with a lid. Before I could even tell my daughter to leave it we were told the water had to be left at the desk (totally 100% understandable but seemed rather abrupt as we had just walked in). We browsed for a bit and my children were very respectful of the store. Half way through the visit the woman at the front came into the back and asked if we needed any help, when I told her we were fine she snatched a book off the stool that my daughter had laid down and abruptly re-shelved it. As we were paying a woman came in with a boy around 6 or 7 and they both had Starbucks (a coffee and an iced coffee) and the lady at the desk told them it was perfectly fine to come in with them and that they even conveniently had COASTERS in the back for their enjoyment. She said this clear as day right over my shoulder to them but did warn them to be very careful. This may seem trivial but this was my first time visiting and the greeting along with the feeling that our presence somehow annoyed her really made me feel out of place. It's a shame, it's a beautiful store and children are welcome (it seems). I would be the first to admit if my kids were acting out of line but they simply were not. Update: I called to speak with her on the phone about her attitude toward us and she told me my daughter looked too young and would likely ruin the books with her water and that it was okay for the people who came in with Starbucks because she "knew" them and they were "regulars". Wow!! My children were well behaved and I just feel that her overall attitude toward children is disrespectful - maybe drinks AND kids should not be allowed. I'm assuming she's the owner. I guess you should be in her inner circle of "regulars" to be treated with respect. I have told all my Riverside friends to not shop here ESPECIALLY with their children. read more

Love love love. I was in the area one weekend and literally did a Yelp search for "bookstore" and this was the first one that popped up. I'm always looking for new indie/locally owned bookstores to check out and Cellar Door did not disappoint. It's in one of the cutest shopping centers I've ever seen. There's a little British shop right across the way from Cellar Door and a bunch of cute restaurants and a cafe (there's a Starbucks too though if you need a fix from there). Great selection of books. I found 2 to buy almost right away and I wanted to buy almost every book they had on the front table. The owner, Linda, was there and checked me out. You could tell this place is loved locally and Linda takes the time to get to know everyone that comes into the shop. She also let me know that one of the books I bought was going to be featured at one of their book clubs (they have like 10 different book clubs if you're a book club lover). The prices are the list prices on the books themselves in most cases but they have a section of Sale/Clearance books too. I never feel bad paying full price to support a local shop anyway. I don't live very close but I definitely plan on making the trip back out to Riverside again for some more book-buying fun. read more

To start of my they did have the book I wanted and they did hold it for me till the next day but that's before I got to store and realized what I got my self into. The store it self is kinda hard to locate if you've not familiar with the shopping center but I eventually did find it. Right I as I open the door I get approached rather quickly asking where is my mask I told her I didn't have one that I was just here to buy a book they were holding and be on my way. The old white women response to this was give me your card and go wait outside. I was a bit shocked by her approach to the situation and mannerisms but I said ok I really wanted the book. Couple minutes later came out with my book and receipt which I didn't sign for so idk how she proceeded it right. I wouldn't return honestly just based on the interaction I had today it's sad to see small businesses losing valuable customers over things that can be improvised upon. read more

This is an amazing locally-owned, independent bookstore. Linda (the owner) and her staff have created such an important community space. I regularly stop by and purchase books, take part in several book clubs and my 8 yo daughter is part of the early readers book club and loves it. She didn't like reading until we found a cat related book at Cellar Door. Her and my 4 yo son love coming with me to the store and always want to say hi to Ms. Linda and her dog Nym. We also love attending the community public events (readings, etc) and I've also been honored to have an event held at Cellar Door for both of my books. Highly, absolutely recommend!! read more

Such a charming little bookstore! I stopped by to wait out traffic when I still worked in the area. The employees were very friendly and offered to help if I needed to find anything specific. I browsed around the store twice before narrowing down my purchase (Difficult Women by Roxane Gay). They offer a reward/loyalty program if you buy books often enough. They also host various book clubs. I don't work nearby anymore, but recommend Cellar Door Bookstore to all book lovers in the Riverside area! read more

I think it is very strange to have to knock on the door and wait for someone to help you. I understand some businesses are strict about wearing a mask but sanitizing my hands... I can do that myself. The worker asked me "are you going to buy something or just looking around?". I replied "I was wanting to looking around". I go in and the place has no music and I felt like the workers there were watching me the whole time as if I would steal. I really enjoy reading and I haven't in a while. I wanted to see what they had but I did not want to buy from them after my experience. I don't think I would ever go back due to the lack of customer service and discomfort I felt. read more

Doesn't contain everything you're looking for but has a great variety of books and genres. I love the idea that a lot of the books were hand picked and recommended by someone that works there. If you live in the area it's definitely a homey feel to it. They also have a book club that is still going on now through COVID times so I'd definitely say look into the books they're reading and if any interest you they would love for you to join in and discuss them. I love discovering small and local businesses like Cellar Door. The store is so cozy and inviting and for such a small place they have so many awesome book choices ranging from every genre! The staff are always helpful, even if I'm just going in to browse they are really friendly and so ready to talk about books! I love that they have a local collection as well that include books about Riverside or by Riverside authors! My only complaints with this lovely store are that some books are hard to find (but the staff knows their way around the shelves so well that it doesn't even matter) and that I've never gotten a chance to see the adorable store dog! read more

While he was in elementary school, we visited you in the bookstore many times to learn of chapter books and series that might interest him. Today, July 16th 2021, I had a disappointing experience at the local bookstore Cellar Door Bookstore, where I am a customer for long time. I regularly buy books in the store, on special order or from attending the book clubs that the store hosts. In a 100 F I walked to the store and I forgot the MASK in my car. At the store, the door was opened by a sales assistant and told me I need my mask. I explained that is hard for me to go back to the car and asked if they could give me one. She said yes, and shortly returned with a new mask and hand sanitizer. While I was disinfecting my hands and prepare to put up the provided mask, the owner of the store, yelled at me from the far back inside that I was not to enter the store without mask. I qualify her outburst as very offending. I was ready and prepared to come in the store according with their particular rules. She interfered rudely, with out knowing what was going on at the door. That was very bad example of customer etiquette in front of her staff and me as a customer. All in all she treated me as an intruder. What it is also very sad and painful for me is that throughout the years I thought we build a real professional relationship as we were participating together in other literary and professional projects. Careful how one approach the store. The personnel might be helpful, but the atmosphere is icy and not welcoming. read more

I can't say enough good things about this store. The second I moved to the area, I found out about this amazing independently owned bookstore nestled in Canyon Crest. I naturally had to go, and discovered a cozy, warm and wonderful atmosphere for book lovers. The employees are so kind and patient, and the bookstore is clean, well organized and have plenty of staff recommendations. I will warn that because it is small it may not have the books you are looking for if you just pop in randomly, and I would highly suggest you call ahead of time if you are searching for something in particular. If they don't have it they will make sure to order it for you and it always comes quickly! If you are in need of a book please go visit, you will not regret it! read more

I adore independent bookstores! This one is beautiful, the staff is helpful, and they have a great selection of NEW books in a variety of genres. But the children's section is what really does it for me. They have best selection of children's books I've seen, without all the crap of the big box stored. My daughter absolutely loves going in and checking out everything on the shelves, and sitting and reading a bit near the big windows in the comfy chairs. I love books and am an advocate of reading especially with my four children. I'm also an advocate for small businesses. The attitude I would get every time I visited the book store was horrible. I felt very unwelcomed. Definitely not kid friendly especially when you have multiples. The owner and certain employee never wanted us to touch any books and would hover over us when we were there. This happened on multiple occasions. Then during this whole COVID situation, I decided to support this local business and order two books online. That was back in April and we still have not received them. All the tracking says is that they are waiting for the item and that the label has been created. When I expressed my discontent they told me they would find out what was going on. After looking into it they said there was nothing they could do and told me I needed to contact USPS. I immediately told them I wanted a refund and they denied it, basically saying it was my problem now. Horrible customer service! I should have ordered from Amazon or Barnes and Noble if I knew I was going to be out $50! I've been on the phone with USPS for 45 minutes trying to see what we can do. I'll never buy from them again. read more
