What. A. Gem. The location is intimate with limited seating, which is perfect for a grown and sexy date night or girls night out. The interior decor takes me back to tropical green summer days, which was very welcoming when we visited during the cold, wet winter evening. We were instantly greeted by the owner, who generously offered some sake while we waited for our friend. Sake was pretty light so we ordered a bottle to complement our meal. We ordered 6 dishes that we shared. I can honestly say, every single dish was AMAZING and fresh. The Latin influence really shines and accentuates each dish in a pleasantly distinct fashion. Oysters and scallops: each shellfish had a unique sauce that had a slight sweetness and brininess. Sea urchin: this was served incredibly fresh without any sauce. Purists will tell you this is theeee way to eat sea urchin. Octopus and shrimp tostada: tostada had a nice crunch and held up well. The shrimp and octopus chunks were juicy and tasted well with the cucumber pieces. Tai snapper ceviche: chunks of tai swimming in a slightly sweet broth. The chunks of jicama added a nice texture to each bite. Green shrimp aguachiles: these were served with the green citrus sauce for us to pour. Depending on the bitterness of the limes, aguachiles are often a hit or miss but tonight, it was a hit. Sea urchin tostada: not on the menu but the owner saw that I LOVE sea urchin and made this for me. On top of the tostada were puréed avocado, thicc pieces of sea urchin, micro greens, flowers, slices of tangerine or orange, and topped off with gold flakes. Literally, the best way to end this epic meal. The bill is came out to a little under $400, which is on the pricey side but you are truly paying for great service and fresh seafood. We ordered 3 different kinds of ceviche, all of which was fresh, beautiful, and is clearly a level above the ceviches I've had at other restaurants. You have to get the octopus one. I was afraid it would be chewy but it was so tender! I knocked it 1 star because of the oysters. It tasted clean and they shucked it well, but it was missing that oyster liquor flavor that we all want when ordering oysters. It really got drowned out by the salsa they put on top. This is a good place to grab a little snack/drink with a couple of friends before dinner (or be ready to pay a pretty penny to have dinner here). This is my favorite restaurant in LA. The food, in particular the green or red aguachile, the scallops on the half shell, the mushroom carpaccio, and my god the kanpachi sashimi are some of my favorite bites in LA. I crave the sauce from kanpachi often, and we do not let the plate go back to dish with even a drop of sauce remaining. Their wine skews natural, but fits well with the food, leaning lighter (I especially like the Txacoli), and the vibes are wonderful. Octavio is talented in his double-breasted blazer, Samuel is so brilliant and hilarious as the front of house, and the music is transportive. This place deserves all the success. I've seen some notes complaining about 20% automatic gratuity and want to note: first of all, we've been coming for years and it's always been 18%. Secondly, if you're not interested in the servers for the restaurants you attend receiving livable wages, please just stay home. This place deserves better from its customers, and delivers far above the level of toxic entitlement. read more

4.5 stars but rounding up. the place is super tiny, but it's cute. there's a 10-person bar area and tables lining both sides of the bar. four 4-person tables and one 2-person table. the food makes up for having to jam into your seat. the service was attentive and efficient. the food was lovely for the most part. i ordered the kanpachi tostada, tuna tostada, snapper ceviche, scallops with uni, and mushroom carpaccio salad. the highlights were the kanpachi tostada and snapper ceviche. super fresh kanpachi sat atop a layer of smashed avocado. it was topped with trout roe, sliced radish, some kind of green salsa and ponzu sauce. incredible. the snapper was a delight with it's delicately sweet, savory and tangy broth. diced snapper is mixed with diced cucumber, diced jicama, heirloom carrot slivers, and microgreens. it's served with plantain chips sitting on the lid of the dish. the scallop with uni was fresh, but i couldn't taste the uni much because it was a very tiny piece of uni. it had pomegranate seeds for sweetness. the tuna tostada had celery slivers, yuzu-habanero sorbet, and a dusting of savory seasoning. frankly, while i love the flavor, i don't love ice in food that i'm chewing. the mushroom carpaccio is on a bed of arugula and then covered with slivers of parmesan. you can't really go wrong with lots of parmesan and arugula, but i can't help but feel it was a but uninspired for a $16 salad. i wanted the avo citrus salad, but they were out of avo. they have a short wine list, but is suspect it's a good one. i had a glass of white txakolina which paired well with the food and made me want to go back to san sebastian. i will def be back for the kanpachi tostada and snapper ceviche. so. dang. good. read more

I loved the attention to detail- from the etched glassware to the octopus logo. The golden era and Hollywood glam aesthetics saturated with bright hues makes this tiny space pop. The Latin theme and monochromatic pastels paired with jewel undertones of emerald, deep ruby, amethyst gave this special place a splash of life. The waiter was eccentric and attentive to our needs. The ceviche is marinated in lime then doused in jalapeño salsa tossed with diced tomatoes, onions before it is brought to your table. The cocktails were refreshing and light and tasted like summer in mid-July. Unfortunately we did not get the opportunity to try the famous octopus. Ceviche Project occupies a small space on a busy thoroughfare in Silver Lake, but its small space belies the delightful interior and the equally flavor packing food that lies in store for the intrepid diner. After years of driving by this place and promising myself that I would one day make a visit, I did. And boy was it worth the wait. The space itself is small. The bar occupies over half the space, where a sharply dressed gentlemen prepares much of the fresh seafood fare. If you enjoy seafood, Ceviche Project is a gift box waiting to be opened. The menu isn't tremendously long, but it doesn't need to be. Each dish's description leaps off the page so by the time you get to the bottom, you'll probably be thinking of ordering one of everything. The kanpachi is excellent, but perhaps the unexpected scene stealer of the evening was the special - hokkaido scallops with key lime and homemade chili sesame oil. The scallops are incredibly fresh, but it's the combination of salty, spicy, sour, sweet, and umami flavors and textures that grabs your taste buds. Paired with a glass of their fine white or orange wines, you will be sent back to that trip to somewhere tropical - a happy place. We loved it so much that we revisited the dish. We were pleasantly surprised at the end of the evening to find that the special was $18 - very reasonable for the quality of the dish. If you plan to visit soon and there is the hokkaido scallops, order without fear. This joint is ideal for a dinner date or dinner with friends (4 max). Besides the 3 sets and their lovely tropical beer, I could afford their Hawaiian Tostada. The tostada was the show stopper!! The 3 sets of Canadian crab claw, sweet & clean. The scallop was teased with their in house olive oil which was so pure, luxury and tasty. I wonder if CP bottle them in tiny vials. I would love to massage my face with it at night before bedtime. I didn't know where they source their sprouts. they were spunky, delightful with right amount of chewing currency. At the end,you could crack the tostada chips finishing up your beer while talking all the happenings with your new friends at Ceviche Projects. The interior schedule was designed by the owner himself. His ideations, his moods emits through each inch of stone, mill work and down to the fabrics of the napkins and stoneware. I am amazed by how airy it feels even with big case good in placed. It extends to the outside and while you wait, you can snap a few photos. It is sooo cute. Came here on Saturday for dinner! We had a pretty good time, but I think if I came back it would be more for a happy hour situation than a full dinner. The waitstaff was friendly but seemed overwhelmed (potentially they were under staffed that night, and started out by bringing us each a half glass of an orange wine when we had wanted 2. It was hazy and a bit sour -- not bad, not fantastic. We ordered oysters that were fantastic, and came with a mignonette already on top. They were fresh and delicious! We then ordered 3 ceviches that I would say were a little short of our expectations. In particular, the shrimp ceviche was not cut properly and we weren't given knives, causing us to try to somehow cut through large pieces of shrimp with our forks. It also became a little difficult to make a full meal just of the ceviche, I think we could have used some different flavors or textures. I feel like we maybe read this wrong for coming for a full dinner. I'd come back for one ceviche or oysters and a glass of wine for sure! read more

Chef Octavio keeps it fresh and keeps you coming back with his terrific staff and artistically plated, delicious ceviche. Each dish takes your breath away, which is good, allows you to feast with your eyes and your mouth. Tasted all the ceviches, oysters, scallops with and without uni. I could barely taste the uni, they were so small, so I chose without the next round. Wine is on the pricey side. They offer some beers not found anywhere else. I hope to taste the spot prawns shown on their Instagram feed, but they didn't have any during my visits so far. The tostadas are difficult to eat as they fall apart and the longer the toppings sit, the soggier the tostadas get. Hmmm. I was looking forward to this, as I do like a good ceviche. And it definitely looks the part of a trendy place to go out to, with a stylish display of raw shellfish behind the bar and lively Latin American music (rather cramped though). Sadly, I was rather disappointed with the food and to an extent, with the service as well. We tried three things - Mushroom Carpaccio was tasty, nicely prepared with very thin cuts. Sort of simple, but successful. Surprisingly, the best dish of the night. The Tai Snapper ingredients list looked like a riff on Peruvian Ceviche, but more stylish. The taste though - amazingly bland, as forgettable as possible. Mostly, one note pineapple marinade. Just not much there in either flavor, or frankly even amount of fish. At least there was a bit of texture with crunchy jicama mixed in - that's the best thing I can say about it. Yellowfin tuna tostada - the flavor was OK, sort of a citrusy sashimi on a tostada. But, it was rather small, and hard to eat with a ribbon of vegetable garnish that just got in the way. My point of comparison, the ceviche tostada at my local Mexican mariscos hole in the wall, is clearly better at a quarter of the price. As for service - they were friendly but overworked and understaffed. It took forever for the food to arrive, they didn't deliver the bottle of Pellegrino that they charged for (we did get a couple of glasses instead), and the capper - enforced 20% service fee which I am fine with despite things being a bit rough, but then a spot on the credit card receipt for "additional gratuity"??!! The owner is one of the most enigmatic people you will meet in this industry: full of that 'it' factor that can't be taught or forced, it's just IT without trying. The balance of flavors is 'otherworldly' as I describe it to my friends. Your taste buds will never be the same again. The place to sit is at the bar so you have the actual Joy of watching this umami affair in action. Probably the best palette experience I've had in Los Angeles! I am a raw-fish snob and this was probably one of the best ceviche I've ever had. Ceviche project takes ceviche to another level, the fish is so fresh and the ingredients are so different, it comes as a surprise to your mouth. We had to have one of each fish plate on the menu and each one was better than the other. I can't wait to go back and have more. The chief is super friendly and takes his time to get to know people sitting at the bar (us). The staff is also very friendly and helpful.
