Sone of the freshest oysters in the area. We ordered the dozen which included east coast and I forget the other region- Canada? I believe not sure but it is listed on the menu. Dirty martini was exceptional. Intimate dining, perfect for date nights or small groups. We didn't have reservations, we were a walk in on a Friday sometime around 4- we were seated right away. I was craving oysters for dinner and I visited this place for the first time. I got there 5 minutes before they closed the kitchen! I ordered a dozen oysters and a hamachi aguachile. The oysters were delicious and they were shucked well (no pieces of shell in them) and were fresh. The hamachi aguachile was very tasty and also very fresh. The fish had no trace of fishy flavor. The avocado cream was smooth and creamy and the chile with oil was fresh, sharp and had a little kick, more than I expected so if you really do like spicy this is a very decent kick without being over the top. Atmosphere where I dined, upstairs, is "cozy." What I mean is it is a little small so if you go there is a chance there's no where to sit. I think I may love the vegetables at L&E the most. They never fail to impress, surprise, and utterly delight me. These grilled carrots with mint and salsa macha and yogurt had me vigorously scraping the plate with every utensil I could make use of. We also had stuffed squash blossoms with summer corn and whatever pillowy cheese was in there, un pictured, but equally divine. Stuffing squash with corn and cheese??? We need to be doing things like this more... I wish they still had the Smoked Mushrooms because that was my favorite thing on the menu. And the Snow Crab Legs which genuinely please please get back on there. I had the mussels too but will skip next time for more veggies and hey, I'll throw some oysters in there too. The beet salad was also quite memorable and the perfect balance of earthy and creamy. The mussels and fries was quite good, too. But cut to two days later and I noticed they overcharged me by 25 dollars and I had to contact American Express. Felt a little scammy. My friend left the tip on her card since she ordered oysters and I didn't eat them so SHE paid 25 dollars tip and I put a line thru the tip line. (Our bill was 126). A nice vibey spot with great service! We arrived around 815pm on a Tuesday night. There isn't dedicated parking but plenty of street parking available. It was pretty full but we were still seated right away. This place is walk in only with no reservations ! We went with half dozen oysters, Fish & Chips, and Broccolini which was plenty of food for two. The oysters were 8/10 ! The Broccolini came topped with a chili oil and tahini yogurt which was very very good. The Fish & Chips were just okay. I really liked the seasoned fries but the actual fish was just 6.5 or 7 out of 10. Something about the batter threw us off. For cocktails we ordered Dirty Martini, French 75 and a Mai Tai. Nothing special about any of the drinks but they were good ! Our bill before tip came out around $120. Came on a Saturday right at 5:00 when they open. There were probably 5 parties waiting at that time as well. As soon as 5:00 hit, they began seating everyone as quickly as possible. We were having dinner and were given a choice of a table or the bar top. We took the bar. There is also a bar upstairs, which we did not see. They were directing people up there who maybe just wanted an appetizer and/or drinks. Upon sitting, we were greeted immediately by a super friendly and welcoming man. Our bill said his name was Christopher S., but we heard people who seemed to be regulars call him Stu. We were so glad we sat there, as he was awesome. He gave great recommendations and helped us narrow down our dishes because so many things looked delicious. He suggested a dirty martini to start if we were thinking about oysters, and I happily followed that suggestion. We started with oysters. We had 3 east coast and 3 west coast. All tasted very fresh and came out within a few minutes of ordering. We got a mixed greens salad as well, which seemed really simple, yet the dressing was subtle but flavorful. Next came the cast iron cornbread, which does take about 20 minutes. It was so good that even though we didn't want to fill up on bread, we couldn't stop eating it. The sweet herb butter was to die for. Last we went with the banana leaf bass. The fish was flaky and moist, and all the other ingredients gave it a lot of dimension and texture. Delicious! Our server had suggested one of their bolder white wines to go with it, and it was another solid choice. Overall, we had a wonderful dinner. The service and food were both outstanding. If we lived in LA, it would definitely be a regular stop. It was super busy when we left, so do come ready to wait. Ive been here probably a dozen or so times & this one of my favorite places to get a light bite & drinks - that being said there is one bartender who is so insanely rude. Every time I walk in and see she's working I have to brace myself. I went tonight and had to tell my partner "don't worry that bartender is always mean" and it took saying it out loud for me to realize that's not normal or acceptable. Sorry, I don't get the hype. I've had this place bookmarked for years due to the oyster praise. Finally, on a day off, I had the chance to come by for happy hour. Let me say, first of all, that the happy hour offerings of today are pretty sub-par. The deal is $1-$2 off on select appies - and only on the cramped second floor bar area. Oysters aren't discounted and neither are drinks. The oysters, themselves, were hit or miss. I think I counted 3 or 4 different kinds in the dozen. The garnishes were okay. The overall quality of the oysters just wasn't there, and literally left an odd taste in my mouth. The bar upstairs is not large, and the chairs are tiny. I personally don't like such compact spaces, so this is not the environment for me. As for the cocktails, we sent back a couple and still didn't like what we had. The flavors were either too much or not enough; the drinks we got were either too sweet to taste anything or else too bitter to actually want to sip on. The food was also not the best. The clam chowder was quite salty and had a different consistency than expected. The caviar service was a handful of chips next to a tiny helping of crème and a smaller helping of caviar! The shrimp cocktail featured shrimps that had been soaked in some type of sauce, as opposed to being fresh for dipping in a cocktail sauce. My group and I were frankly confused as to how we had such an off experience, after reading so much praise from (albeit) years and years ago. I am very disappointed. I have eaten at L & E before and have had a good experience. I guess those days are gone. I usually eat fried oysters on my birthday from L &E. I order them to go. I have done this many times. This year I called to order, sadly found out they won't do take out and no longer serve fried oysters. From an oyster house that serves other fried food. Went here last night with my boyfriend and we were able to find seating quickly on a Saturday night. We ordered a few dishes, most of them were okay, but the crab cakes tasted off. Since everything was so expensive we tried to finish all of our dishes, which was clearly a mistake. In the middle of the night my boyfriend got food poisoning and there is no doubt in my mind that the crab cakes were the culprit. Came to L&E Oyster Bar on Friday night for drinks with my friend after dining nearby. This review is for the 2nd floor bar area, NOT for the restaurant. My experience here basically killed the vibe. After reviewing the menu, I decided to go with the Bird of Paradise. I usually order drinks based off the ingredients and lean towards ones with fruity and refreshing ingredients. In this case, I saw pineapple and mint, and made my decision lol. Bartender said that Bird of Paradise had a lot going on and I agreed. I've had drinks with campari before and they've never bothered me. Upon receiving my drink and taking a sip, I realized that Bird of Paradise was not as tropical as I thought. It was extremely bitter and I knew I wouldn't be able to drink it comfortably. I apologized to the bartender and asked if I can exchange for something else. Bartender looked super annoyed, made a snide comment about how he didn't sabotage my drink, dumped it out in the back sink area, and went on his merry way to help other customers in line before plopping down the menu in front of me again. I tried to lighten the mood by asking for recs, but bartender went back helping other customers and raised a finger basically telling me that he's busy and for me to wait my turn lol. After he helped two customers, bartender came back and said, "what were you saying?" After providing some info about the cocktails I normally like, bartender asked, "what about a Moscow Mule?" Lol, I was so over it at this point and just wanted the convo to end. The drink eventually came and it wasn't the best Moscow Mule either. If you live in LA you know Silverlake is a nice area, but parking is terrible & traffic is chaotic. Their hours are 5pm-10pm. I asked our waiter what he recommended on white wines that would par well with our oysters. I was looking for something quite similar to a Sancerre (TY to my sis-in-law). Drinks we ordered - Joe: old fashion - Me: Turonia Albarino Apps 1/2 dozen oysters 8/10 -- (east meets west kind of thing here) their oysters that night were kusshi & moonlight oysters something like that. Very briny, smooth once we took a bite all sorts of ocean tastes. Cast iron cornbread 8/10 --This was crispy along the edges, soft once you bit into it. It wasn't too sweet, but it was topped with honey butter that had hints of nuts. Lobster Roll w/ fries 7/10 --it was good, wasn't great. If it didn't come with an aioli sauce (I think that's what it was) & butter I don't think it would've been enjoyable. Parisian Gnocchi 10/10 - we love gnocchi!! So flavorful, yet so delicious. The chevril cream gave the gnocchi so much flavor, full of butter, hits of lemon & parsley. The gnocchi was crispy along the edges, but soft in the middle. It wasn't doughy & man we had some doughy gnocchi before & we did not like it. This was my favorite gnocchi thus far. read more

Finally got to check L & E Oyster Bar off my list of spots to try! Seafood is one of my favorite types of food and this restaurant definitely hit the spot! Highlights: * A wonderful selection of either west or east coast oysters (or mix and match to your liking!) * The shishito peppers were cooked in this delicious, tangy red ginger soy sauce that complimented it so well! * The lobster roll can be hot or cold on your preference - hot is served with warm butter and cold with a pesto mayo and for us, the hot roll was so perfectly fluffy and rich! * Branzino was a very generous portion (enough to share for two) and was seasoned and cooked to perfection on top of a bed of citrus rice! * ORANGE WINE! My absolute favorite and such a rarity to find at restaurants. I had a glass of the L'Archetipo Fiano orange wine and it was so light and refreshing, a perfect pairing with our meal! I was blown away by the service at this restaurant. On its own, the food doesn't stand out as extraordinary, although it is very good. When we arrived, we explained that we had two dogs and asked for outdoor seating. Not only did the waitress bring over a water bowl for the dogs without us asking, she also had treats for our fluffy friends. We ordered 2 dozen oysters (1/2 from the East Coast and 1/2 from the West Coast), chowder, calamari, crab cakes and mussels. We said that we weren't very hungry when we arrived, however we did end up ordering quite a bit! There was only one hiccup during the night. The mussels that we ordered at the end of our meal took a little long. I think what happened was that another table also ordered the same thing and got our order instead of us. We had been here a few years ago and thought we'd try it again on Father's Day. I was craving oysters and seafood so we made a reservation. The place was packed. But we expected that so we sat outside and enjoyed the weather and admired the dogs in and around L&E. There's an upstairs bar as well so you can bide your time there if you're inclined We got our table after a while and got down to it. A dozen oysters, clam chowder, a lobster roll and the mojo shrimp. Everything was stellar. We got 1/2 Eastern and 1/2 Pacific oysters. We enjoyed comparing them and liked them both very much. The chowder was also very good and served piping hot. The lobster roll was substantial and great. My kid loved it and the house made chips. My wife liked her shrimp dish that was flavorful. Nice. We got a waiting time of 30 minutes, went up stairs to hang at the bar, and were called back downstairs within 5-10 minutes for a seat at the bar. Our waiter, Chris, took care of us at the bar seats downstairs. He was super chill and nice, great personality, and overall made the meal a better experience. The oysters are a great treat. I agree with others that the toppings aren't outstanding, and leave something to be desired, but the oysters were good. My order wasn't perfect for the oysters, but I didn't complain. Chris ultimately noticed, and when my entree got backed up, he was very kind in offering me some cocktail shrimp to enjoy in the meantime... Which I didn't really need because the appetizers here are freaking delicious. The carrots and cauliflower are killer good. The salad was well seasoned and coated and a great addition to the meal. The entrees: my girlfriend didn't love the burger, but I thought it was pretty solid.
