I was excited to try this place because hk comfort food is the best but it ended up being kinda disappointing. The food was just alright. We got the iced hk milk tea, club sandwich, beef chow fun, preserved veggies and pork stir fried with udon, and Swiss chicken wings. The wings only had flavor on the outside but the inside was pretty tasteless. The flavors didn't seep in. The udon was a bit too salty. The club sandwich and beef chow fun were alright but they weren't wow. And the milk tea didn't have enough tea flavor. All in all, it wasn't the worst but I wouldn't pay for it again. At my suggestion, I met a friend here for an early lunch this past Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021. Neither of us had been here before but I had heard some positive reviews from co-workers at the Manhattan courthouse. I am brown-skinned (a Caribbean American) and she is Chinese American. After we were seated a waitress came over to ask about water. She very intentionally put her back to me and only directed her query to my friend, as if I were not even there. When she returned she put the water bottle and glasses closer to my friend, again making sure to keep her back to me. It was very clear she planned to continue snubbing me. My friend just held her head down and was terribly embarrassed. Since we had plans to go to the nearby Van Gogh exhibit I decided to stay but had my friend place the orders with the offending waitress. I was afraid to let her know what I wanted to order. How can you trust someone to serve you the food that blatantly shows you they won't even acknowledge your presence? I am in my 60's and a professional. The waitress's behavior is absolutely unacceptable. Later a lovely waitress (younger with long hair) was very pleasant and professional in answering our questions about a dessert. Unfortunately, because of the first waitress, I will not go back to Cha Kee but hope that the management will talk to the wait staff regarding appropriate professional, respectful behavior. read more

I am incredibly disappointed. In the middle of such anti-Asian sentiment, it's absurd that a so-called "cha chan teng" does not have Chinese on its menu or bilingual staff at an establishment in the heart of Chinatown, where many people who do not speak English live. The lack of Chinese language clearly indicates they have no intention of serving Chinatown's residents. I find it offensive. read more

Really enjoyed dinner here. Apparently the lunch and dinner menus are different but chef Akiko Thurnauer's dinner dishes are spot on. Loved the Japanese Cantonese fusion. The gyoza are amongst the best I've had in NYC. read more

The food and decor were truly excellent. Highly recommend the okonomiyaki Brussel sprouts and branzino. It's byob so keep that in mind. The attention to detail and flavors were superb. A hidden gem. read more

RUDE AND extremely low quality food!!!!! Worse than their counterparts, but they charge MORE!!! The girl who does the coffee and tea in the front is rude! I stopped going to their previous location (cha chan tang) because of their hostile attitude and they won't hesitate to say "it's not my fault" when your food doesn't arrive after more than half an hour. Imagine hearing that response. It's bewildering to be talked to like that. Is this endorsed by the owners? The HK tea is mediocre at best. Tastes watered down. The rice roll is mediocre. Only two sauces- hoisin and soy sauce. Other places add peanut butter. Had not gone back in five years based on previous cha cha tang bad attitude. Went today because it was on my route to fay da, thought maybe with new staff it would be different. Still the same! The staff is dragging this business down. Owner should stop by some time. Disgruntled, not customer friendly. They must not be paid well or there are no consequences to their bad attitude. Do yourselves a favor - go to Kong Sik Tong at 65 Bayard, half a block away (better food, better service, no need to pay for hostility and aggravation), or M Star at 19 Division (again, better food and better service). They are both the same type of food and a lot better. Years later, the owner disregards the hostility of the staff and act like there's no competition out there. Sad that they make the same mistakes many, many years later. They've learned nothing and that makes it sadder than the bad attitude and the mediocre food. I would love the owner to respond and address the terrible staff's attitudes. read more

Grabbed an early Tuesday evening reservation off Resy for 4 and were quickly seated. My group was very pleased with the food quality and service, with food arriving quickly and without any lag between dishes. Our servers were incredibly attentive while also humbly acknowledging that they were going through the growing pains of a new restaurant, asking for feedback on how to improve. We ordered the tiger salad, beef curry triangles, banana leaf branzino, water spinach/空心菜, Dan Dan noodles, sweet and sour pork jowl, and a daily special onigiri with house-cured scallop and uni. The stars of the meal were unquestionably the water spinach and branzino. The former was similar to the dish I've been ordering since childhood to accompany my dim sum but with even more concentrated salty, savory concentrated fermented tofu/腐乳 flavor that we found so delectable and wanting more of. The branzino had a very interesting contrast between a seemingly-grilled skin topping a slightly spicy possibly stewed interior? This all came wrapped in a steamed banana leaf, and the contrast in flavors and textures between the exterior and interior of the fish was incredible. My group loved the pork jowl as well, which was a unique take on the otherwise classic sweet & sour pork; I found it curiously tender but chewy, perhaps a little much so. The tiger salad had a great, tangy dressing and the thoughtful addition of mint for extra punch. The Dan Dan noodles had a poached egg and a more togarashi-esque spice to it than the red chili and Sichuan peppercorn I'm accustomed to, but it all came together in a wonderful mazemen-like concoction that we all enjoyed. More forgettable were the curry beef triangles (under seasoned) and house special onigiri which had delicious seafood toppings but in too small of amounts to truly appreciate (or rather too difficult to split amongst 4 people). My main rub for the place follows this last point; the restaurant is not the best for value/price with small portions, especially to share amongst 4 people. The place works much better if dishes are shared amongst 2 people, so you can really get your fill of each dish. Otherwise though, had an excellent time and will be coming back, probably for Cha Chaan Teng style breakfast items. Super pleased with our servers, who recognized our celebratory occasion and allowed us BYOB wine with no corkage fee (no alcohol sold in-house, only mocktails), and bent some rules around their no-outside food policy and provided us new plates and utensils for the cake we brought (so appreciative but won't do that again!) read more
