This is my 2nd time at this place already. I gave them a 2nd chance before I put down my review here. However, both experiences of dining here are horrible and SHAME on Chang'an. The average cost per person is about $200 to dine-in. With $200, you can really go to many Michelin restaurants for this much. Why waste your money in Chang'an? A place that is not known and has no respect for their customers with bad service and the quality of the food were just ok. Maybe 2 stars to their food. I would give 0 star to the services provided!   I would expect someone to go over the menu with you for a "high-end" restaurant. However, they don't! A bunch of waiters and waitresses would stand together and chat-chat gossip. They won't come to you until you wave your hand. And obviously, they won't go over the menu with you since they barely speak English. The Beijing Duck's popular dishes, which you have to pre-order on your reservation, and each table limited one duck at a time. We had a group of 10 people, and we are really into the Beijing Duck, and that's the only reason we were there. Then we made two reservations so that two of my other friends who love ducks could have their own. The front desk told us the beginning that once my other friends finished their ducks at another table, they would be able to send them over to our table to dine in with us. We totally understand since they want to keep one table per duck rule. However, they refused to bring the leftover duck to our table, which we were ok with it too, but we were already frustrated at that time. Later, they refused even let my friend carry the boxed duck to our table. They said they would provide the boxed duck when we all finished and left the restaurants.  We did not just order the duck dishes, but we also ordered a full table of other dishes. Everyone understands no outside food or drink rule, but we lost our WILL there to carry the same restaurants' food at our table. We were completely disappointed at that time. This is the most shitty restaurant I've visit during my life. I will NEVER EVER come back again. I went there with my husband, and we actually met our friend here, we asked a server if we can join them, but they said the duck cannot cancel, but we can have the duck on our table, then after that they can Togo my dishes and bring it to my friend's table, then ok, we kept our duck which is fine, since my husband is a Peking Duck lover. And when the duck arrived, one server asked me did I order other staff, and I explained that we will join my friend's table, and she blamed on me that they have customer who wants to order extra Peking Duck were done similar thing before, so we cannot join my friends because their policy. And she said the one who told me we can join my friends is new hire. Okay, fine, we can Togo my duck and join my friends, but, they hold my duck until we leave, WTF? I paid for it, and they don't give me my Togo boxes because they don't want us to share the dishes? Yes, not a joke, They hold my food after I paid. At the end, they made us all angry, a restaurant made their customer angry.... I never had same experience in the world.. I would honestly say that the environment is decent and I can definitely give 5 stars for this, BUT their service is terrible and the food is NOT WORTH $$$$. They charge $20 for an extra sauce. The Guokui + Babao sauces which is a free dish, it made me throw up at 1am. Looks like they are not fresh made. Or, maybe the Guokui is not Gluten free, I'm gluten allergy, I think they should notice the customer that. If I can, I will give 0 star to this place. Guys, don't waste your money here. read more

The roast Peking duck is so amazing and delicious. The presentation is so beautiful. Other dishes are so good and tasty. And the decorations in the restaurant is outstanding. This is probably the one of the most horrible experiences I've ever had with a restaurant, especially with this luxury type of restaurant. We were left waiting for 20 min without any service, we had to reach out to multiple server before they took our order. Then another 25-30 min without food. They didn't even give me my drink, which was ordered in the beginning. Today is also the mid autumn festival, and this is a horrible experience. And to mind you guys, the place weren't busy at all. At the end, no apologies were given, but only "we are the best Chinese restaurant". Yes, a restaurant that keeps customer waiting for 45 min without any food, not even appetizers. Should be ashamed of these kind of management and service, and turn some of that blind pride into actual enjoyment for the customers. This is my second time I am here and can't wait anymore to give an review. I don't usually give a bad review but unfortunately I will this time. First, the service is unacceptable for a fine dining experience. The servers have awful menu knowledge. They gave us wrong information and did very bad on recommendation on food. Second, the food isn't as good anymore compared to the first time I ate there about couple months ago. The food is worse in quality compared to a normal Chinese restaurant but this is a fine dining restaurant. The only thing that can be considered to be a fine dining experience here is the price for the items of the menu. The server today recommended 48 dollars for a butterfly pea fried rice as it was new to the menu and could feed 4 or 5 people. But when it came out, we were surprised as it was just a bowl of rice barely enough to feed one person. The jellyfish salad tastes was awful with the chili oil. It made your tongue numb. It made the rest of the meal unappetizing. The duck was ok and after finishing the duck you get the option to choose between frying the rest of the duck or putting the rest in a soup. But this time they didn't give us the option and made us pay the bill without finishing the rest of the duck.I will never come back to eat here again. read more

We celebrated my sister's retirement here. The food and service were fantastic! We tried the 1. Chang-An Roasted Duck (pre-order required - not the one with black caviar) - this was the centerpiece and the best dish, of course! 2. Matsutake Mushroom Soup, Wild Morel and Chicken Soup - served very hot and good to the last drop 3. Old Shanghai Style Smoked Fish - we enjoyed it (surprisingly!) 4. Assorted Vegetable in Hot Pot - it was all Gailan and enjoyed it 5. Pan Fried Pork and Hotbed Chives Dumplings - Good enough 6. Peach Green Tea - very subtle and highly recommended - ordered a pot 7. Peppercorn Ice Cream and another flavor - good to finish the taste Overall, the best advice I can offer is block out the price from your thinking. I know it's difficult to do but do try to just enjoy the experience. It's actually more enjoyable if you just do that. Went here for my mom's birthday beginning of last month. The interior is gorgeous. Many opportunities for great pics! The Peking duck is their star dish so they make a pretty big deal if it. Now to the food, if I had to be perfectly honest, wasn't good. They put this pepper corn thing? Not sure all over EVERY dish. It made all their food taste awful. We came for lunch for two. The menu prices were very high, even compared to the best restaurants. We avoided the expensive dishes, bought three of the lowest priced ( a vegetable dish, a noodle dish, and a shrimp dish), and had two glasses of lowest-priced wine. The bill was just shy of $150, before tip. The food was good. We like spicy food. The wine was good. The service was excellent. The decor was very impressive. But we cannot see returning. I think that the duck here is absolutely amazing! They have amazing presentation and they tableside duck service is really fun and entertaining! I mean who doesn't like to see their food cooked in front of them right?? The duck was really crispy and delicious and I love the crepes that it was served with as well! The duck was really the star of the show! I feel like for the price I paid for the other dishes, I expected more. I was a little disappointed because I didn't think the dishes were worth that price. However, I would come back just for duck. I think service is quite mediocre, the servers there could improve their communications skills. I only say this because of the price point that the restaurant is set at, you would expect a fine dining service. This place has amazing ambiance and decor, but that's about it. If it wasn't because we found a hair in one of our dishes, or that the chef preparing our duck, picked his nose (thank god he wore a mask), or the fact that they forgot one of our orders and still charged us for it, I probably would have given it 3 or 4 stars. Food was overpriced and was just mediocre. When our server went to get their manager, they asked if they can give us a dessert so they wouldn't have to refund us for the dish that never came. Our bill was $800ish and they didn't even apologize for the hair in one of the dishes. I wouldn't recommend this place.. they need better servers and better management. read more

When we ask for extra condiments (cucumber & leeks) to eat with the duck slices, they have the audacity to charge us extra. We came here to celebrate my grandmother's birthday. We were seated at separate tables and joined by another group of customers in a small room when the restaurant was very empty. The prices are laughable in comparison to the portion size ie a small bowl of fried rice was actually $68. Initially seeing the prices we expected family sized portions. Service or lack there of was terrible, entrees out first and timing between dishes were not executed well. We sat there for 3 hours waiting and waiting. The food and service were great. We ordered the duck, cucumber cold noodles, and tofu and it was delicious. The service was good, our waiter and his assistants were attentive. The only thing I find very weird especially in a supposedly fine dining is when you pay they bring the credit card machine on your table and the waiter would ask for you to add the tip and they stand right next to you to finish the transaction- I find that very tacky. Our experience this evening was exceptional. From the dishes we ordered to attentive and intuitive service, our party of 13 thoroughly enjoyed the Chang'An dinner. We are a bit perplexed as to the low rating. The passion fruit, mango tea in the most adorable teapot had me falling in love. I let my tea cool and asked for a glass of ice and violà, artisan iced tea. Duck 5/5, sea bass 5/5, ribs 5/5, pork belly buns 5/5, sautéed greens 5/5; desserts: baked pumpkin, 5, durian milk cake, 5, sticky rice with red beans and dates 2 (bland). We doubled all dishes for the sheer size of our party. I had a glass of red, and total was 8 bills. The only blotch was you can order only one (1) of the specialty gourmet house special signature roasted duck for a table. If you want to order more than one, then you have to split your party to different tables. What policy is this? My husband who is more frugal wanted to make sure I mention the cost for anything extra. Why would I do that? The negative reviews are a bit baffling to me as Chang'an obviously presents itself as a more high end Chinese restaurant. I'm so glad that there is a fine dining Chinese restaurant now, here in OC! I have come here a handful of times since they opened in 2021 and they never disappoint. From the attentive service to their delectable dishes, Chang'an never fails to serve some of the most sophisticated and delicious Chinese dishes. Chang'an definitely reminds me of other places in Asia. The interior is absolutely beautiful and all of their dishes are just lovely. Their specialty is the roasted duck which must be ordered 1 day in advanced but you cannot miss it! The skin is perfectly crispy and as a plus, they serve it with the thin pancakes! Some other dishes I had during my last visit were the Szechuan sea bass, the short rib, and the wagyu beef fried rice-- all were simply wonderful.
