We have reservation for two for table service roast duck ($98) which we pre-order. We had to wait 20mins at the table before the duck is served, but it was fine since I was busy chatting away with girlfriend and eat up complimentary bread. The roast duck serving was a nice show at the table with chef pouring wine on the duck, light the fire up and serve. They served crispier part of the skin right the way with brown sugar to dip. So we snack on the skin while chef sliced up the rest of the duck for wrap. I like how thin the slices are. Not too thin and not too thick - perfect for wrap. I love that the duck didn't have much fat between skin and meat. We also asked for duck soup which is free with the roast duck (have to ask for it). We have the duck as main entree and order a plate of spicy bokchoy stir fry to cut down the fat. I don't think stir fry bokchoy worth the $38 - we probably would order different veggie to go with the duck next time. But roast duck is definitely worth coming back for special occasion or fancy date night. I think roast duck with a plate of stir fry veggie is perfect dinner for two with left-over duck for me to cook another meal with. read more

This is a beautiful restaurant that makes you feel transported to China. Everything was delicious but the Peking duck was incredible. I've been on a mission to find good duck for years since having the best in Beijing, and this is the first place that can compare. Does Chang'An have any Michelin stars? No, but it is priced as if it is a high end Michelin star experience. French Laundry is worth the price of admission and deserving of all of its hype. I've also eaten at Antica Macelleria Cecchini, also worth the price and international visit for the most amazing dining experience I've ever had. Chang'An? Well, let me put it this way, in terms many in SoCal folk can relate to: Chang'An is the Shen Yun of food. There is the promise of providing tastes of ancient Shaanxi cuisine and hundreds of years of tradition, with pomp and performance that will surely entice some. The decor is there, the service is attentive...yet... I've had numerous elements of much better Shaanxi cuisine in the SGV and at a significantly lower price. The cooking here was competent and agreeable, but the price is very hard to justify and performative acts of tableside preparation uninspiring. I had a birthday party there on Dec.16 with 8 friends. The experience was pretty bad for the following reasons: 1) my wife booked a separate room and asked if there was a min. Charge for it, the operator told my wife the min. charge for each person was 150 dollars but since we were having lunch there and it was not on weekends, we should be ok if we are around the min. charge. But when we are there, the waiter told us a different story. We felt that the operator's words were more like a trap. 2) the waiter who served us in the room was the worst one I ever met in U.S. for the past 25 years. The way he recommended the food made you feel that you were a fool to be manipulated. 3) there was one dish never showed up on the table but it showed on the bill, when we asked the waiter, he explained that he had the food boxed. Have you ever met such a thing that without your permission, the waiter just box your dish without asking and still act as if that is nothing but normal? 4) as such an unprofessional waiter as above, he still insisted that he needed a 18 percent or above tip to be paid! Tip is something to pay your service , an waiter like that is worth no tip at all , though we still paid the amount he asked. 5) it is people who makes the business! We were told the owner spent a fortune on the decorations and interior,honestly, the owner should spent more efforts making his/her people right! We had a group of friends trying to celebrate my gf's bday there. We happened to meet another two friends in the restaurant. So we asked the server if we can combine the table together. They said yes at the beginning and turn to a "no" after they asked management. The reason is that "only one table can order one Beijing duck, and since my friend also ordered the Beijing duck on their table then they can't join our table even there are open seats". So my friend asked to check out the bill and take the duck to-go so that they can join our table, management still refused to give them the Beijing duck in a to-go box until we leave. Oh boy, what rule is that my friend can't even take their to go duck order with them. This is like holding the duck as hostage. This is completely ridiculous. They might as well enjoy all the ducks with themselves. Would never come back again. Plus all the food is not worth the price. I would never ever go to this restaurant again in my life. We spent over $200 per person but we all got the worst fine dining experience. Highly disappointed! read more

I paid 10% tips and the service lady keep asking me why I only give 10% and saying that their manager will ask why only 10% tip, I said are you going to force me to pay 18% tip? It's a beautiful place when you first walk in, feels like a high-end restaurant. This restaurant definitely is charging a lot , like a Mastros. The food was very average, like any Chinese restaurant. Service was only okay, the staff was not very knowledgeable of the food they are serving. Food and service were very good. They do need to improve on some things if they want to justify the high price. First of all, stop with all the texting to confirm the duck and time. Seriously I confirmed the day before by text and then they text me 30 minutes before I arrive (most people would be driving at that time). It is certainly annoying and unnecessary. The second thing is the tip jar for the duck guy. When you charge $100, there should not be extra tips for the person cutting the duck. It really cheapens the whole experience. The third thing is the tipping - as the previous person said, it is very tacky to stand right next to the person while waiting for a signature and tip. Not only that, there is no place to fill in the amount of tip. It starts at 15, 20, 25, 30% and. above. You have to press one of those percentages. All expensive restaurants do not stand around and wait for a tip. Like I said, the food and service were very good, just as I expected. But if it is to be a total experience (as reflected in the high charges, it came out to about $100 per person) the restaurant needs to get rid of these petty money making annoyances. read more

The waiter doesn't take away the used plates. High price and low portion. The waiter recommended the dish to match inappropriate, the fried beef tongue tastes like fried sirloin. The duck soup that comes with the ordered dish does not even have duck bones, and it tastes like instant noodles. read more

This place is very expensive but the food has no taste. I would not go here. Costs us $500 for a Chinese meal that lacks taste. We ordered the duck like everyone else and it was so bland and oily and they keep asking us to take pictures and make videos so that we can post it on our social media to help advertise for them. Worst taste and small portions and I had to eat noodles at home to make up for the lost food. I didn't wanted to complain when I was there because it was our wedding anniversary we could have gone to Mastro and it would be ten times better. What an amazing experience. I went with a friend and was pleasantly surprised. This place is authentic and classy from food to decoration. The roasted duck was as good as what you can get from a high end Peking duck restaurant in China. Everything else also tasted good and was elegantly presented. A special word for the architecture and interior decoration: the receptionist told us that the "hanging flower door" facing the entrance and the reception desk are real antiques shipped over here from China. So are the carved-wood window panes lining the walls, and the roof tiles running on the frontside of the bar. Each decorative detail tells its own story ... Yes the place is a little pricey, but within the range of fine dining restaurants around here. And it's so unique! read more

Great duck and the short ribs are really good. Their pot stickers might be higher priced but certainly one of the best I've ever had.

We were not impressed with this restaurant. First, the good: the restaurant itself is beautiful and the ambiance suits the fine dining image they're going for. Second, the service was decent...the servers barely spoke English so patience is required when ordering. These two reasons are why I'm giving this place two stars. We ordered 6 dishes among the 3 of us and the portion sizes were very small-think tasting menu portions per dish. We left hungry which isn't what you want after spending this much. We didn't get to order the roasted duck because they require you to call and reserve that ahead of time but some of the notable dishes were the honey grapefruit spare ribs, and the stir fried green bean with eggplant. We also ordered the Japanese wagyu fried rice, stir fried prawns, marinated beef tongue, pan fried lamb buns, and the peppercorn ice cream. The rest of the food was mediocre and we definitely won't be returning to this restaurant. read more

However, I'm giving only 3 stars because I think the experience overall is overpriced. $28 for a pot of Chinese tea better be some mind-blowing tea! But it was just ok. The Beijing duck presentation is really nice, and in my mind the price of $98 was pretty reasonable given the presentation. However, we asked for some extra condiments (cucumbers, onions, etc) and they charged $5/condiment, and $8 for extra wraps. Most restaurants provide these free of charge with the duck, but we were charged $23 just for additional condiments! For a high end restaurant, it felt a bit too nickel and dimey for me. They asked us if we were sure we wanted to eat there then they talked amongst themselves and came back and said there was a 45 minute wait even though the restaurant looked like it was 25% full.
