I honestly expected the food to be mediocre and the service to be subpar but they truly outdid themselves. The staff was rude, untimely, and forgetful. I ordered a drink and had to remind the server three times to bring it and when I received it the cup was dirty. They brought out my order ten minutes after my companion's order was brought out. The portions were abnormally huge but I suppose that's expected for this type of establishment. Overall we waited 45 minutes for terrible food, even by shitty Chinese American restaurant standards. If I could give zero stars I would. Time is precious and I would caution anyone to not waste your time here. read more

Two words: explosive. diarrhea. Just when you think it's over, it keeps wrecking you until you've literally shit your soul out. We ordered the kung pao beef, the Mongolian beef, the chicken fried rice, potstickers, chow mein, eggdrop soup, and garlic green beans. All 6 of us got gnarly sick almost immediately after eating it, most likely from the kung pao beef. Stay away. This place should not be open for business. Ps. I've been eating at Chan's almost exclusively since I moved here 15 years ago when I'm wanting Chinese food. It literally pains me to give this place two stars because the food here is actually excellent however my recent experience there is so absurd that it has me looking for a new Chinese food go to. I called in to place an order to be picked up by a friend that was coming over. One of the items I asked for was the calamari. We both happen to love the calamari when it's dipped in the hot mustard sauce so I asked for an extra mustard dipping sauce. I was told it would be an extra charge, 6.00 extra!! I was certain the woman taking my order wasn't understanding so I spent the next five minutes basically bantering and negotiating for an extra sauce. Keep in mind, this is a 50.00 order total not including tip and I'm asking her for an extra tablespoon of dipping sauce to which I was repeatedly told " calamari comes with one sauce, any extra will be 6.00" When my friend picked the Order up and asked if there was mustard sauce in the bag, the woman immediately began ranting about the extra tablespoon container of mustard. This whole thing was so ridiculous that I feel silly even writing it. I realize the world we live in now has its challenges and I'm really not expecting anything free but to throw a fit over a tablespoon of mustard to be included with a 50.00 order is more than I'm willing to tolerate. HUGE portion sizes! The 4 of us who had just completed a grueling 13 mile hike (check out South Sister), plus my grandparents, ordered a seafood stir fry, lo mein, orange chicken, broccoli beef, and pot stickers. We didn't even put a dent in it! All the food was really good. I particularly liked the lo mein and the broccoli beef, surprisingly I actually wish the broccoli beef had more broccoli in it, it was very good! The orange chicken and stir fry were both pretty solid. The potstickers were great. This meal could have fed the 6 of us all weekend. It was delicious. My one complaint was I thought the orange chicken had a few pieces that were chewy and I wish there was more seafood in the stir fry. read more

If I could go below 1 I would. We have always gone to Chans for Chinese. I have tried it twice now and I don't know what has happened. It was horrible both times. I had to throw out $40 worth of food that was not edible . The BBQ Pork was old and stale. Sesame Beef tough and tasted about ready to go bad. Cashew Chicken a muxed up mess of a huge amount of some kind of dark brown gravy with veggies turned to mush. Why after going to Chans since they opened has this happened. Server was extremely rude and did not explain the portions right I asked if these were shared portions and he said no. He had a had time with our order and did not like that we ask when we ordered it a certain way. 2 of us order the #1 food was cold and fried rice was burnt. When we told them that he responded "I've been serving this all day and your the first to complain, I was floored. And told him he was the worst server we had in our 8 day trip.. I really can't say anything positive about the food. It's not edible. Dry, no spices (curry rice had ton of one spice that was not even mixed in), freezer burnt, awful. It tasted like they didn't even bother to care less to cook anything better. I spent $30 there on take out and couldn't eat it. And I'm not even a picky eater! Our first time here since we are new to the area. I was surprised that they had lunch specials on the weekend as well so that started off a great lunch. Prices were very good and especially after getting our food and seeing how much they give you was definitely worth it. I like my food spicy so I requested it and it was beautifully super spicy so it just got better. Then we got our pot stickers. They were definitely made in house as they were huge and had good flavor. We even had great service right from walking in the door all the way to the end. Came with my family for lunch. Service was excellent but the food was not great. We ordered Fried rice and it had no flavor we ordered egg flower soup and no flavor. The BBQ pork app we ordered had 0 flavor and was tough. However the Kung Pao entree, other appetizers and children's dishes were good. I've been frustrated by the Asian food in Central Oregon and my trip to Chan's today did nothing to improve it. The service was courteous and prompt (it was the lunch hour). The atmosphere If the volume of food was an indicator of the quality it would be 5 star. Unfortunately, I could barely eat my order and regretted the take-out that I had ordered for my husband. He tried it for dinner and most went in the garbage and he's not nearly as picky as me, especially when he's really hungry. The fried rice was unrecognizable, a clumpy/soggy brown lump. The fried shrimp looked good but had more tempura than shrimp. And the vegetable portion was drenched in a thick flavorless sauce. I REALLY hate spending good money on bad food. Being new to town and a born and raised New Yorker, I was hoping this place would be good so that I could check off my go to Chinese restaurant. First the woman who answered the phone was super rude. But I still ordered. Picked it up and they messed up the order. Should have checked the rest... got home and had ordered won ton soup but what I got was not... I don't know what it is... I do know it is not fully cooked. See photo below...Lemon chicken was slimey, cashew shrimp had barely any cashews. This place is an utter fail on service and quality. Guess I'll keep looking. After I realized that there was a fire here, I was surprised by the level of quality the builder went to to make this an inviting neighbourhood American-style Chinese restaurant. It was pretty cool, to say the least....for a new place. The food was great. The fried calamari, kung pao chicken, Szechuan beef are my favourites here. The soup is delicious.....although The service was pretty quick and the dishes were better than anything else I have ever had (Chinese) in Bend. Any hole in the wall p.o.s. take-out restaurant in New York City would have a 5 star rating if they were compared to this place. The thing about take-out....is that you can't send something back. Cashew chicken....I'd send it back. Seasonings of cornstarch, unknown broth and soy sauce does not a good cashew chicken make. I don't claim to be an expert cook of Chinese food but there has to be something more to the dish than this. I really wanted to like this place. I've given it 3 tries out of convenience. The quantities are big but the quality sucks. The Mongolian beef was so tough I couldn't even chew it enough to swallow. The pot stickers are decent if you use hot oil and fresh ginger and soy sauce. The food is pre-made and kept hot. Example, the noodles expand and get really doughy because it's been kept hot for so long. I wouldn't be surprised if they reuse yesterdays leftover food by just reheating it. Yuck! This trip to Chan's was the most regrettable I have ever had. First they put meals down In front of us that belonged to another table then moved them to the other table. Good thing I didn't sneeze. We went to the newly re-opened Chan's last night for dinner and had a pretty great meal. Having dined there about a year ago (pre-fire), I was pleasantly surprised by the "new" Chan's. Better food, better service, WAY better decor and ambiance. Now after patronizing pretty much all of the Chinese options here in Bend, I have to say that Chan's is my favorite. There were 5 of us dining last night, so we shared an order of veggie spring rolls, beef and broccoli, chicken lo-mein, cashew chicken and chicken chow mein. Portions were huge and delicious and we all left full and happy (with a bag of leftovers for lunch today, Yay!). Our server was friendly and efficient, without being overbearing, and it was an overall nice dining experience. We'll definitely be checking out Chan's again the next time we're craving Chinese food in Bend. It's not the BEST Chinese food I've ever had, but it's the best in Bend. :) read more

I suppose there's a "Stephanie" in every crowd (see her oh-so-shitty review below). Although Chan's is obviously regarded as one of Bend's choice Chinese restaurants, those like me who've both lived in Asia and in large US cities are certainly spoiled by more authentic Chinese cuisine - although Chan's certainly have their own versions of various dishes, I cannot say their food wasn't good or up to par in ANY way! I'm not used to steamed dumplings (aka pot stickers) made Chan's way, as they're filled with both pork and veggies -- but I really enjoyed their version. The dumplings were well stuffed, steamed and then lightly grilled, and UNLIKE many Chinese restaurants, the dumplings didn't have an extra thick layer of dough. I ordered the Szechuan Beef, again it was unlike what I've had hundreds of times before. Instead of shredded carrots (the main veggie ingredient) there were not only thick pieces of carrot, but several other veggies, unlike what I'm used to. BUT, not only was there an enormous amount of beef, but every single slice was obviously from a damn good cut, and as tender as tender gets. Different veggies or not, it really comes down to the sauce... Chan's version of Szechuan Beef is certainly different, but I must say it was terrific. On top of that good meal, I'd called about 15 minutes before closing. I was pretty beat up from driving all day and was in a motel room when I called Chan's. I didn't know they didn't deliver, yet the owner said he'd be happy to drop my order off seeing I was close by! So whether it's "Bend-style Chinese" or whatever you want to call it, from my experience Chan's is one damn good place to eat. IMHO, Stephanie probably needs a little more fiber in her diet, and maybe needs her meds adjusted too... this isn't exactly the forum for venting one's spleen, much less her "guts". Lovely friendly service! My family and I enjoy this place a lot because you get large portions. So we get to try different things, there was only one thing I didn't like about this place, they charge you for refill on softdrinks. Besides that when I visit the staff are friendly, and the food is great, except one time our appetizers shrimp was a little too fishy, and the pork was though. Besides that I have always enjoyed eating here, the veggies are crunchy and the food is tasty! read more

Stopped in for lunch after a long day of traveling and food was all delicious. Kids had orange chicken with pan fried noodles. Delicious chicken that was not chewy or over breaded. I had the clay pot with chicken. Wonderful and light flavor with a ton of chicken and veggies. And not to underestimate all big portions even though it was lunch menu I could have easily split my dish with my hubby. Service was fast and friendly. Only negative was the iced tea for me. This place is hurtin! I had hair in my food the LAST time I ate there and the service was terrible. The party at the table next to us was disgusted too. I must admit, the portions are tremendous and so is the oil slick running out of them.
