Service was so so bad, the server was the worst rudest person possible. How can he still be there.

Very much enjoyed this place. Seating is inside and set for social distancing. We were unsure what we' were wanting to order. We chose "Chef Special" at $14.95 per person. They asked a few questions of our dislikes and allergies and the chef chose our menu. It was amazing and A-Tom of food. We ate it for 3 different meals and there was 4 of us. Hot and Sour Soup appetizerS: of cream cheese wontons, spring rolls and bbq pork--lots not just a bite for each person Garlic Beef & Chicken with Green Beans Shrimp dish with Broccoli sweet and spicy (almost tasted like a Curry but I was assured it was not) Shrimp and Chicken with veggies and garlic Cashew Chicken with lots of cashews There was no skimping here like left over meat or just bits it was all very abundant with meat and seafood. read more

Very disappointed with the food. The service was good and the restaurant was clean. I'm sorry to say we were shocked how bad the food was. We ordered pan fried noodles and friend rice. The noodles were soggy and the over plate had no flavor. Lots of pieces of carrots cut nicely to look good but tasted horrible. We asked for hot tea twice and it never came. Orange chicken and general chicken were both good but the sauces were loaded with sugar. Pork fried rice lacked pork and flavor. Egg flower soup wasn't too gelatinous but almost tasted like dish water. The quality of chicken was good, no fat or extra breading, just way too much sugar. The sliced pork was very lean and surprisingly tender. I liked it. Tea and cookie was very good. One meal could feed an army. Delicious food! The dry stir fried green beans were so good! Beef Chow Fun was a bit bland but generous with the meat. We ordered takeout at the counter, and service was very fast. I went to dinner with a friend last week. I was very disappointed in my meal. I ordered a combination meal. First, my soup came cold. Then when I got my dinner, the rice was cold, sum-gum chicken was pasty. The only thing good was the mother's chicken. I was charged extra for switching sweet and sour pork for it. Never was told I'd be charged for it. Told the waitress...but, she needed to be right, saying she told me. I wouldn't have ordered it for a price increase of $1.95. Well, truly disappointed this time. Our order was take out anD we ordered orange chicken (very little sauce and very dry) - beef with broccoli ( not bad but proportions of broccoli to beef was way off) the fried rice was so sticky and seemed like nothing was added to it. We also ordered Chow Fun with the three meats ( pork was so hard and dry we could not eat it, the noodles so short and stuck together they were pasty and chewy not in a good way) and then the spring rolls so soft and floppy they were gross.. we usually enjoy Chans a lot BUT, I think the chef or who ever had a very OFF DAY! read more

Ok, read some reviews, and was pretty shocked. I don't write many reviews but some of these were quite unfair. Most laughable was a one star for an hour wait.... on Christmas Eve!!!!! What a douche bag. And regarding rudeness, go to Chinatown in San Francisco and you will love the service here. Some people who write reviews should get banned. Anyway. I too am from calif and finding tasty Asian food in more rural areas is hard. The portions are extraordinary and you will always be going home with left overs, which is not a bad thing. Chan's is one of our favorite Chinese Restaurants in Bend. We came for dinner on a weeknight, after work, no wait to be seated. Great service tonight. A big shout out to our server, Kyong, she was great, funny, prompt, very attentive. She took our drink order and food order quickly, she was quick to refill our water and clear our table as we finished our soup, brought us takeout boxes before we even had to ask. The food was delicious. Tonight we tried two new dishes (to us), the stir fry noodle and the low mein noodle. We like the Stir fry noodle better, both made with rice noodles, but better and lots of veggies on the Stir Fry noodle, the House version had all the fixin's beef, chicken, portk and shrimp. The sauce had a nice garlic flavor. The low mein had very small and few veggies and the sauce was very mild. Other times, our go to is the Chicken Sub Gum or the Cashew Chicken. The prices for the combination dinners are a great deal $10-14. We find that Chan's serves larger portions than some of the other Chinese Restaurants, so it's easy to have extra to take home - it you can stop yourself from eating it all - because it's so good. Have eaten there 4 times since moving to the area . Each time we are disappointed. Seems no matter what we order it's cooked in some plain brown gravy type sauce . Ask for teriyaki sauce or other sauces , they say they don't have any . Portions are big enough , just not the best quality . The hot and sour soup wasn't satisfying , and the egg flower soup was super bland . Ask for sesame seeds and they maybe brought a teaspoon . Not every dish should be made with the same sauce . We are done giving them chances . We are done being disappointed. We will just wait to have chinese food when we go to see family on the coast . Visiting Bend, hungry for Chinese food. Found Chan's on the 3rd street strip. Looks like your typical Chinese restaurant from the outside with lots of booths inside. We came before the dinner rush and got a booth right away. Server was ready to take our order from a menu with a full selection of items. The food came quickly and the portions were huge. Everything was as described and tasty, and reasonably priced. We ate heartily and had enough leftovers for another meal. The server was prompt and attentive without being intrusive. Grace and Wendy are the 2 ladies that are always there to greet you with their beautiful smiles. I have to go there about every 10 days for their hot/sour soup, potstickers and black pepper chicken & beef. And to see them and ask how they are doing. They are killing it. The place is always packed just like their food containers. They are literally spilling out of their boxes. I have to take the food to go because I make a pig out of how much I eat because it is way too good. Definitely go say hello to Grace and Wendy. They will take care of you. read more

CHAN'S IS BACK IN BUSINESS AS OF YESTERDAY! Eight months after a major fire caused the owner to close Chan's, gut the place and start over, twenty five years to the day Chan's first opened, owner Lap Chan's restaurant is open again. To celebrate the reopening, for eight days there will be lunch and dinner specials that run $2.25 and $6.95 respectively, reflecting the pricing of the long ago original opening. News reports say Chan's staff is now up to 30 from 20, so that's good all around for jobs in a community where unemployment is well above national averages. Not only that, but verified Mr. Chan continued to pay his regular staff during the eight months the restaurant was closed. Pretty impressive. Wish I could say my hubby and I are fans of Chans' food. But we're never been, putting it below average for quality that we were used to during our 20 some years living in the SF area. But we'll try again and hope that an updated kitchen and additional staff will both be beneficial. Time will tell. In the meantime, you'll likely need to get in a long line if you want a seat at Chan's. Bend really is a desert for decent Chinese food and while Chan's food wouldn't win accolades in a major market, it is the best Chinese food in this little city. 2013 Edit: Went back to Chan's today & my experience was totally different. The food was not good at all. We had Spring Rolls for appetizer but they had a weird taste. Our dimmers came with soup so we had Egg Flower-no flavor & Hot & Sour soup-ugh! so sweet you couldn't taste anything. Our meals were Shrimp with Lobster Sauce-but there was NO sauce & the white, clotted egg sticking to the shrimp looked ugly. There was quite a few shrimp but once taken out there was a pile of veggies. I had the House Clay Pot Noodles which had NO flavor at all & the noodles were mushy & so slimy they stuck together. The beef in it was tasty but the chicken & shrimp also tasted bland. I can't remember ever not boxing leftovers to go home (the best part) from a Chinese restaurant but we took nothing. Even the fortune cookies were stale & tasteless. What happened to this place?? 2012: The reviews are true- Chan's is great!! Only gave it 4 stars when compared to places in SF & LA Chinatown. We are visiting Bend from LA (frequent LA Chinatown & formerly NY so we want GOOD Chinese food) tired & hungry from hiking the amazing volcanic areas. The people were great and the food was full of flavor and enough to easily split (I read someone said you could split between 2-3 but I had doubts since I was really hungry- but now instead I have leftovers for 2 more dinners!! Entrees were BBQ pork fried rice (very flavorful but a touch dry for me), House Chow Fun (the best- thick,tender noodles with every meat in a complex & wonderful sauce!) and Yu Xiang, a shredded Pork dish that was sweet and spicy. Very popular. Parking lot was full. But the food isn't great. They serve large portions. My husband and I shared a combination dinner meant for a single peso and ended with food to spar. Ok, this Chan's has the best Chinese food in bend in my opinion. I tried other places and was disappointed because it was expensive, oily, and inedible ( kid you not). The service is good, considering they are short handed but all of them are very nice and try their best. It has booths and some tables and not noisy at all. Food, to me, is Chinese American and I feel that's great for bend, food is really generous and is cooked well. Been here quite a bit, and usually it is phenomenal. Today, however, Heather was our waitress and she was too busy gossiping in the back to care about customers. When she came to take our drink orders she took one person's then started to walk away. The rest of us had to holler after her what we wanted. On top of that, when she brought the drinks she forgot one and had to be reminded (there were only three of us). Move onto the food order and she didn't pay attention to that either. Someone asked for chopsticks, twice, and they were never brought. One person asked for no spice and their dish had spice. They don't handle spice well, so this resulted in them not eating what they wanted. Someone traded their dish with them as we didn't trust her to be able to correct the problem at this point. During the meal she never came back for any water refills or to see if we needed anything. After, when we gave her the card to pay, she took the card to the register, dropped it onto the counter and walked away. No one was at the register, so the card sat there unattended where anyone could have gone up and taken it. Granted, it was 30seconds, but no one's card should be left like that for anyone to grab. 4 stars for food, 0 for service. read more

Wow, just got mother's chicken and BBQ pork to go. The pork was dry, the fried rice tasted old and slightly rancid. Last week i ordered green beans in black bean sauce, beef and broccoli with spring rolls. The meal tasted fine, except the spring rolls tasted rancid, but the meal gave us diarrhea. I don't know why I decided to give it another try but I did. They used to be good , so I thought It was just too spicy, now I don't think it was just that it was spicy. Good American Chinese food with good size portions. The three of use ordered 2 entrees, Kung Pao Chicken & Szechuan beef. Both dishes were had a nice flavor an the right amount of spiciness. At the end of the meal we still had 1/4 of the Kung Pao & Szechuan beef that we took home to eat lager. Chan is good food at it's reasonable priced.
