I've been here to take out and to eat in at least 5 times since I've discovered this place. Taken a good amount of friends to try it. It is hands down the most authentic and best Thai food in the STL metro area. Superb quality, great service every time I've gone, very interesting drink specials. The Dinner menu is where it's at, but they have a really good and affordable selection for their Lunch service. I can't say enough good things about it. Try the Meing Kham for an appetizer. The smoked Green Curry is an easy hit. Beef Nom Tak is amazingly well done. It's all good. Such a good and authentic representation of different regions of Thai food. I have not had a bad dish from them yet and I doubt I will. read more

This is my favorite Thai restaurant in St. Louis right now. I used to go to King & I mostly but the texture on some of their food changed. Forks & Stix is my go-to for khao soi still. Chao Baan has been good all 5 of the times I've been and I haven't been disappointed with any of the dishes I've tried. The whole fish is wonderful and not something on every menu. I now live in a small city in Missouri without good Thai so I look forward to coming here whenever I'm in St. Louis and in the mood for Thai. read more

We were out searching for a restaurant on Saturday night - wanted something better than takeout and faster than a standard place - decided on Thai at Chao Baan based on other reviews. Great choice! The restaurant is new (2 1/2 months) in a new strip mall at the eastern end of The Grove. The staff was friendly, our waiter (Kevin) was well versed in the menu, described every item in detail, let us know his favorites and why they were good. We decided on the special of the day (a version of pad thai) and the green curry. Both excellent dishes, very fresh tasting with great flavors. Will definitely return to try some of the other items on the menu - the fried rice sounds really good! read more

Went for lunch with a friend a couple weeks ago. Nice place very spacious. I actually would have given them 3 stars but I'm giving the benefit of the doubt because (at the time) they were less than 60 days in business. So, impressions: wait staff very friendly but honestly didn't seem to know much about the food they were pushing. Made some awkward small talk about ordering and how things were prepared. The food itself was pretty good, not a religious experience, but not at all bad. I got pad thai which was decent and Mrs V and friend ordered curries, both of which were good. Menu (at least for lunch) was very limited. Overall: I think there is room for improvement but it's currently going through its infancy so we will definitely give another try, next time for dinner read more

This was my first time trying Chao Baan and I was so excited because of what I've seen on social media and I am so utterly disappointed. I really avoid giving poor reviews, but this was truly a poor experience. We started by ordering one of their highly promoted cocktails and it came out looking nothing like its picture. I feel if you are going to charge $12 for a cocktail it should come out looking as advertised to some extent. Not only was the cocktail not presentable, but it was poorly made and definitely not a craft cocktail. It felt like it was thrown together without care. After ordering the cocktail we didn't see our waitress for 35 minutes. The table next to us ordered, ate and finished before we even got our cocktail. We finally ordered and our food came out fast and looked beautiful, but the taste was bland and underwhelming. We weren't given silverware or napkins so I had to ask the hostess for some since our waitress was MIA. We ordered #16 and #22 which were both highly promoted on Instagram. While #16 had flavor it was so hard to eat. #22 was extremely bland. My boyfriend was so disappointed he went to Seoul Taco to get food to take home. This was our first try at Chao Baan and I really had high hopes for a good experience, but I would not return after this one. read more

Better late than never. Finally made it here and I can't wait to go back. Started with the highly recommended Mieng Kham which was so good. The chili peppers will give it a kick but I think what I loved the most was the tamarind sauce. Finished with the special which was a stir fry version of the Gaeng Som. The white fish was perfect and the flavors really blew me away. Not too spicy. Will be back and can't wait to try something else. read more

This is one of the best Thai spots I've been to in STL. The decor of the restaurant when you enter looks beautiful and upscale and there is attention to detail. It's very open space with an open kitchen as well you can see into. I started with the Calico Kid and that cocktail was worth every penny. It was a very delicious old fashioned made with quality bourbon (Four Roses Small Batch Select), and may have even been the favorite part of my meal! All the entrees ordered did not disappoint either. I got the Kee Mao Noodles which was maybe a tad sweet than I'm used to with Kee Mao, but was balanced with strong spicy flavors as well so I did not mind too much. Also tried the Panang curry, and this was more thick and rich than I've seen in restaurants with a darker color too, but it tasted just like Panang should and was really good. Last I tried a bit of the Thai Fried Rice, which had strong basil and some spiciness and tasted like most Thai-style fried rice I'm used to at other thai restaurants. Very authentic AND very delicious, especially if you like spicy! I went with a friend and we started with the green leaf wraps appetizer (without the chilies as we aren't great with spicy) and it was very good! Had hints of ginger, lime, and coconut but all very good and nothing too overpowering. We asked what some of the less spicy options were and decided on the special and the stir fried greens as our mains (both came with rice). It may not look like much but the stir fried greens were AMAZING. I would definitely get that again. And my friend really liked the special too! They both still had a decent kick but flavor was great. It was pretty filling and we got the leftovers to go. Even though I was full, I ended up finishing the leftover greens and rice when I got home, so so good. Overall, the food was delicious and unique. Service was friendly. I haven't been disappointed in the flavors of the food from here. I was though disappointed ordering something hot and having no spice. Maybe there was a mixup and I got mild because the person I ordered with got mild for a different dish, but the hot was quite mild. Maybe the dish I ordered isn't supposed to be spicy despite it having optional heat levels? Or it's a St. Louis thing seems like a lot of places don't add much spice out of precaution. I tend to order carry out so can't comment as much on ambiance. Thought it seemed nice and subtle when I was there. Service has always been at a reasonable pace. read more

COVID TIMES REVIEW - Chao Bann is a charming Thai restaurant that showcase all aspects of Thai food. From more tradition dishes to dishes not commonly found at most commercial Thai restaurants. They offer outdoor seating with a server, but deliver the food in a take out style. I would recommend doing a communal style order process so that you can try everything your heart desires. The server was helpful and very informative. Offered great pairs of drinks with our food. We liked the food so much we placed another order after our initial one because we wanted to try more. There are definitely some stand out dishes that are worth getting such as the pad see ew. The noodles were thick and delicious, I wonder if they make them in house. The sauce was a little too sweet for my liking but then again, it does say a 'sweet soy sauce' in the description. Next time, I'll ask for a spicer level. I also got a small order of the Tom kha; the broth was delicious and the shrimp was perfectly cut for bite size soup consumption. Skip the chicken wings. Based off the description, i was expecting a coriander rub on the wing but instead it was the typical deep fried coating on the wing with a hot sauce on the size. That's why I gave this place 3 stars instead of 4. The ambience is ok. Located on the street level of one of the new apartment complexes. Highly recommend anything that has noodles! read more

We ordered Chao Baan twice in two weeks. I was absolutely craving it, and they didn't disappoint. The SomTum is such a yummy, fresh and spicy accompaniment (it was what I was really craving). I ordered all my dishes medium/spicy and they were all perfect. We tried the Pad See Ew and the Grilled Eggplant this time. Both were really good, especially the Grilled Eggplant - spicy and a little sweet. I might prefer their Pad Thai to the Pad See Ew. My only slight complaint is that I wish they featured more vegetarian options. Again, I applaud their take-out packaging. As someone with celiac disease thai food is usually a good option as most dishes are made with rice noodles. However this place uses soy sauce with wheat. They would not make any changes for me. My options were 1 type of soup, cucumber salad or satay without sauce!! I know we gluten free people are pains but thai food is inherently gluten free to begin with!!! I visited Chao Baan for the first time on a particularly busy night. The friendly/accommodating staff were up front about being busy/under-staffed (before we were seated), which I appreciated. I've always seen the exterior of the restaurant and the glowing sign, never truly knowing what it was. Upon finding out it was a Thai restaurant, my sense were tingling with curiosity. The first time I went I ordered the Kee Mao noodles with Tofu, which is arguably their best dish. The crunch of the sautéed tofu and the spiciness truly coincided with each other. I've been there about three times now and I plan on going more in the near future. Not to mention the staff is also extremely friendly and go out of their way to accommodate your needs. read more

Great addition to the St. Louis restaurant scene! We had the pork riblets, gaeng som, and charred eggplant. As someone who doesn't usually love meat, the pork riblets were surprisingly delicious- really well spiced and not overly fried. The gaeng som was different- a lot of lemongrass and cooked papaya in a tumeric broth- so be prepared! The eggplant was incredibly yummy- charred and then stir fried in a hoisin sauce.
