Hubs and I wanted to celebrate Valentine's Day Early last month so we decided to try Char. Our reservation was at night so parking downtown was easy at this time. Just keep in mind that there is No Valet available for restaurant guest. We started our meal with the Calamari which was very nice. Our main dishes arrived shortly after. I had "La Roca" which was a bone in chicken breast in a green chile mole sauce. It was good - it had a NM twist to it with the green chile sauce instead of the traditional. It was a nice dish but not what I was hoping for and it was quite small so I ordered myself some Esquites. I actually enjoyed the Esquites so much more than my main meal if I'm being honest - they were incredibly delicious. My hubs ordered the Branzino which he enjoyed very much but did mention he wished he had ordered a side too to make the meal more complete and more filling. For dessert we ordered the "Churros & Helado" and the "Pan De Muerto" which were a Delightful palette cleanser that we enjoyed very much. The ambience of the restaurant is nice and the staff - especially our waitress was absolutely amazing. I will say that it is a little pricey and the food portions are small but overall it's a nice place to celebrate a special occasion. read more

Char is one of those stand out dining experiences that checks all the boxes. Genuine and friendly staff, flavors galore, trendy atmosphere. We arrived early for our reservation so we decided to grab drinks in the hotel lobby and listen to the live artist serenading the guests. We were allowed to take our drinks into the restaurant when it was time for our meal. I think Antonio was our waiters name. He greeted us right away and made us feel right at home. We got the chili flight to start. We loved 2 of the 3 chilis. We also asked for some chips to dip in the chili cuz the soft tortillas were a little awkward. We shared a New York strip steak and it was cooked to perfection. The shining star however was the side of truffle oil fries. GET THEM. Associates of ours were staying at the Hotel Andaluz and spent a good deal of time talking up the Char. I've honestly never heard of Wagyu steaks on hot stones, but they are outstanding. They're actually served on 400° charcoal bricks. They also came out extremely tender and juicy. Combine that with a New Mexican vegetable medley called Calabacitas and a potato, cheese and parsley dish called Pave Potatoes and you have a meal fit for a king. The dining room is immaculate and brings a touch of class to Albuquerque. Service was impeccable, the experience was incredible. There was a cute note and rose placed on the table with our menus, and the note included a free glass of sparkling wine for each of us at the speakeasy bar upstairs. For our main courses I ordered the steak enchiladas and my boyfriend ordered the NY Strip Steak with the pava potatoes on the side. Everything was wonderful. Decided to try but they told us they were no longer taking walk in's though we could eat at the bar . The bar server Julien was very pleasant and made good margarita up , our appetizers came out fast but took up space on the bar so it felt awkward probably should have just had one instead of 3 large plates at once. Oh Well, seated anyway. Clean, modern and upscale feel. It's brunch time and definitely different items on the menu. It was the Breakfast Frito Pie and for the wife the Tres Leches French Toast. Another hotel restaurant? That's what went through my mind when I learned that my daughter was hosting us for brunch at Char, on the first floor of the Hotel Andaluz. I am a very blessed man, because my daughter found the finest hotel restaurant ever. Char for brunch or breakfast is a top five dining experience in Albuquerque. Our waitress was Crystal. She presented a cool look but that all warmed up with her inviting greeting. She knew the menu perfectly and answered all of our questions. Then she took our rambling orders accurately and delivered everything to our specifications. We started with guacamole and salsa. The guac was sprinkled with spicy pepitas. It was delicious. It came with three radish slices for decoration. The chips were perfect, but I would have loved more radish slices for dipping. Next time! Nice salsa, not too spicy but very tasty. I had the green chile omelet as an entree. It was perfectly cooked, American style. It contained chorizo and some wonderful colby-cheddar cheese. No grease whatsoever -- how did they do that? It was a perfect breakfast entree. Others at the table had: biscuits and gravy -- also no grease but wonderful flavor of gravy with crumbled sausage and fine biscuits; the green chile smashburger, which delighted my son-in-law, who is a gold star griller with decades of restaurant experience; and green chile stew fashioned with wagyu beef -- tender and delicious. For dessert, we shared a plate of french toast with macerated strawberries and a delicious cinnamon coating. I managed to get most of one piece before it all disappeared to the fellow eager diners. The ambience of Char is perfect, the service is outstanding, and the food is the best you can get for breakfast or brunch in Albuquerque. My coworker and I had SUCH a lovely evening at CHAR. This spot had a great vibe - clearly upscale but not stuffy - in a beautiful space. The food we had, starting with the chili flight, was absolutely amazing. We split everything we ordered: the chili flight, wagyu enchiladas with red and green sauce, the calabacitas, and the churros with peanut butter ice cream and bruleed bananas. Everything was delicious and the chili flight was such a great way to celebrate the regional cuisine! These were also some of the best enchiladas I've ever had. Showed up at Char on a Sunday morning at 11:42 AM. The restaurant is only 20% filled. Me: Hi, I would like a table for 1 please. Hostess: Do you have a reservation? Me: No. Hostess: I'm sorry but we only seat people with reservations right now. Me: [Look around at the empty table]. Ok. [Leaves] Me: [As I was walking out the hotel doors, I open up OpenTable and make a reservation for 12 PM. Then I walk back into the restaurant.] Me: Is this sufficient? [Shows the hostess my reservation]. Hostess: Yes. But we can only seat you at 12. Me: But you have all these open tables. Hostess: Yes but they have reservations. Me: So are you telling me that somehow all these reservations are going to show up in the next 18 minutes, and if there isn't an open table you will boot someone out of an existing table for me at 12? Hostess: Yes. Me: Can you see how ridiculous this is? I mean, I'm not trying to give you a hard time but you have all these open tables. What a wonderful new elevated dining experience in the heart of Albuquerque! It is apparent every detail of the food, cocktails, and service were considered. We enjoyed several appetizers (albondigas, roasted beets, and, my favorite, wild mushroom tostados), a variety of shared upscale drinks featuring locally sourced ingredients (as is the entire menu), and then dinner (filet, NY strip, and the branzino fish) all cooked and presented to perfection. The appetizers (frites fresca, esquites, and wood fired cauliflower) balanced the meal to perfection! The variety of the menu made our choices challenging but Josh and Kicker, provided just the guidance we needed! David, the valet, and Adrian, at the bar, were also wonderful and were the "cherry on top" of this treat! Eventually, we moved upstairs to G.Toti for after dinner drinks and dessert and were welcomed into a sophisticated speakeasy and adjoining rooftop lounge. The environment was cozy and topped the evening off just right! Cannot say enough about the renovations to Hotel Andaluz - respectfully paying tribute to its history while embracing the style and extravagance expected by today's most discerning guests! I was really looking forward to trying out Char. It's a really nice place for being attached to a hotel. Parking was a nightmare, took 15 mins to just park. I sat at the bar, and I placed my order. Bartenders don't really engage with you unless you're ordering. I ordered my food, and then a coke and water. Three different times they dropped off food I didn't order to my seat at the bar. This threw me off, but shows the lack of engagement from the bartenders. They brought out my potatoes and steak, only it wasn't the steak I ordered. So they left the potatoes, and brought out another steak 10 mins later. The potatoes had to be eaten since they would go cold. Great crisp, but needed salt. The steak came out on a metal platter that was super hot. (Usually you'd under cook the steak so when it comes out it's not over cooked) Shocker, my steak was WAY over cooked when they brought it out. Overall not a lot of flavor on the steak, they bring out a bunch of sauces and a salt and pepper tower. Doesn't the kitchen salt and pepper the steak before cooking? I drank my coke and it sat empty the entire night. The bartender never asked once if I wanted a refill on the coke or steak. (At one point there were literally three bartenders and I wasn't asked once.) My water sat half filled as well. Even with all of the screw ups, the manager never came over to talk about my experience, the poor service on bringing the wrong steak, or the fact the staff kept trying to deliver the wrong meal. I never even saw a manager and there was never a single table touch in the normal restaurant nor the folks eating at the bar. I for sure won't be back, and maybe it was just an off night, but they weren't that busy. (4 people at the bar all night...) Whether I'm having a cocktail or not, I enjoy sitting at the bar making new friends. Adrian and Kevin are the absolute best bartenders. Their attention for patrons far exceeds the normal attention at most bars. Friendliness, constantly checking on their customers sitting at the bar, while still getting the drinks out for the servers. Weird that they serve steak on the hot plate, especially because it keeps cooking. So you may want to order it less cooked if you want rare or medium rare because by the time it gets to you it's still been cooking on the way to your table. Located in the Conrad Hilton hotel Andulaz, this restaurant is a real gem. It's a steakhouse with a Latin flair. We had the sirloin steak which was cooked to perfection!
