I visited Char tonight with a friend and the experience was not very good. He ordered his steak bone in and seared on the edges and it came to the table medium with no bone. He order a steak for his dog and it came covered in pepper. After their multiple errors, they want him to be the solution for their bad service. This place has definitely seen better days. I chose to come to Char for my birthday celebration, I couldn't help but notice a somewhat chain-like atmosphere that didn't quite match the hype I had heard. The restaurant was pretty much empty and service was just ok, it was a little bit of an awkward experience. I was dissapointed I didn't get a birthday treat or any special gesture despite what we paid, and felt kind of rushed to pay the bill and leave. Nonetheless, the steak was decent and the butter tray which had a couple different flavors of butter. Nestled by the UofM area, Char has not disappointed me the multiple times I have been here for dinner. I always get their sauteed crab claws which is a must. It's just that tasty! For my entree I usually get their prime new york strip or ribeye which are always cooked to a perfect medium. I usually top it off with crabmeat as well. Char has set the standard for fine dining in Memphis. Their excellent service and quality of food is greatly appreciated in the city of Memphis. First let me say, this is my most favorite brunch ever! I'm a huge brunch eater, I travel a lot so that is saying something! We went for the Sunday Brunch at noon. The ambiance is incredible! It's inviting, fun, beautiful and full of life! There is a screen with an old movie playing, LIVE music and incredible food and drinks! The mimosas are to die for! Please throw away all the Cajun seasoning you have started putting on everything. My seafood carbonara tasted the same as the crab claws that tasted the same as my husband steak! We really loved Char and would get take out even through Covid. We were so sad. Please either state that food has Cajun seasoning on it or stop using it. When did y'all change all the recipes to add that? We will come back...we aren't gone forever because we do love the casual overall happiness of the bar with the piano player. The restaurant was very clean with tables adequately spaced. I had the fried green tomatoes. They were crisp on the outside and juicy inside. I don't like Remoulade so I dipped in my buttermilk ranch dressing. Divine! The redfish was very tasty, but I wish that I could have not had the sauce. The sauce was good, but a little too heavy for the fish. The spinach and cheese grits accompanying this dish were great. My companion had a wedge salad and a filet with Lima beans and macaroni and cheese. His steak was fork tender and had a wonderful flavor. It was comparable to our favorite steakhouse. Came here as a party of 6 on a Saturday to try out their lunch/ brunch menu. We ordered bread and butter - the duo options for butter were a maple walnut and a cheese chive butter - to my surprise I like the sweet butter more than the salt. For the main, I got the Southern Style Benedict ($12) which consisted of buttermilk biscuits, locally farmed duck eggs, fried green tomato and country ham. Also got a glass of OJ to drink. Another party on our table got the Salmon, and he found it weird that when it arrived to the table it was luke-warm and actually almost cold. The Chicken Pontabla, which another of my co-diners got was very tasty, and was the fave dish of all of us on the table. So for my palate, the food was fairly ordinary taste-wise. When I ate the separate components of my meal individually it was all quite tasty - but when I combined everything, it all just canceled each other out and nothing really vowed my taste buds. Afterwards I wasn't excitedly planning to return back to try other things on the menu again the next weekend. First experience here was excellent. Parking is plentiful unlike other spots in the U Of M area. The atmosphere was absolutely amazing. Soft jazz music and also a section with a live band. The lighting is also soft and ambient, sets a a really good mood for a date. (Hint guys lol) The employees are very professional and welcoming. The hosts took literally 2 mins to get us seated. Our waitress (Jewel) was very upbeat and thorough. The food took about 12 mins to come out after we ordered. Honestly with the type of atmosphere we thought it would be longer. Char Good wine list w/unusual selections. Had Bukettraube - Cedarburg, S Africa. Fruit forward (very). Great with spicy dishes. That's what I had. Chili fried oysters. Cumin cream & a corn relish. Good. Sauce needs either a little sweetness to balance the flat heat of the oysters or a different style heat to offset the oysters. Relish was good. Veal picatta w/ a side of Truffled Frites. Frites were good. Garlicky with a decent shot of truffle. Limp not crispy. I like them that way. I ordered wrong on my entree. Char is an American Steakhouse. So what did I order? Veal Picatta. Wrong, wrong, wrong! Sauce was thickened with flour. So along with the less than crispy crust (hard to do with a sauced meat anyway) it tasted floury. On Bucatini- a thick round long pasta with a tiny hole down the center. Made the dish more floury. Just didn't hit the mark with me. You can have far better in Cordova at Villa Castrioti for $16 vs $23. Next time I'll stick with steak or fish. Unbelievable bourbon selections- 60+? From 6.50 for George Dickel to $35 for Knob Creek '2001'. All for a 1.5 oz pour/shot. read more
