I added a side of the birria consommé for dipping, which had good flavor but was a little too salty for me. The restaurant has a casual, laid-back atmosphere with plenty of seating and an open kitchen where you can see the food being prepared. Everything looked clean, the staff was friendly, and our food came out pretty quickly. Overall, I enjoyed my first visit. The food was fresh, the tacos were good, and there are enough options on the menu that I'd come back to try something different. The salty consommé was really my only complaint.

Pollo Campero is primarily a Central American fried chicken chain, with 350 locations worldwide. It was originally founded in 1971 in Guatamala. They are currently in a rapid expansion in the U.S., with this location being one of a dozen in Florida. The state with the most is California, and I'll have to look out for them when back home. You order and pay up front, just like a fast food restaurant. But the food was delivered on real plates and metal utensils to our table once ready and it came very fast. 4 piece Fried chicken with campero beans and campero rice ($15) - I thought the fried chicken was OK. It did come with a dippable campero sauce, a mayo based sauce with spices. The rice was decent, but wish the beans were a bit different than the standard tasteless pinto beans. Campero sandwich ($7.60) - version of a chicken sandwich. Good brioche bun, and a decently juicy fried chicken breast. Campero Bowl ($12.40) - wasn't very good and ended up being very dry. The grape tomatoes were mushy and not edible, and the greens were limp. The fried chicken on top didn't really add much flavor, and the rice was dry with the pinto beans being the same. I did like the avocado chunk along with the corn salad. Individual empanada ($3.10) - small, very thin crust. The filling was tasty but there wasn't much of it. It has a self serve soda machine with Pepsi products. Since the plates were reusable, assumed that they would bus.

The sweet potato fries were delicious and well seasoned, and the Oreo shake was also great and well-blended.

As a side note, as long as you leave off the dressing, the salad held up fine in the fridge until the next day. Service was friendly and super fast.

Jersey Mike's has slightly more decked out sandwiches and Jimmy John's has the "less is more" taste on their good bread they bake in the stores. Either of these usually get 4 stars, but this Jersey Mike's gets a strong 4 stars. First, the store is newer, has a clean interior, and there is parking right in front, making the South Florida situation for such places analogous to the one in Southern California. (I always make these comparisons when I'm in South Florida.) The location is excellent. It's on Federal Highway north of the Financial District around Broward Blvd. and south of Sunrise Blvd. where the A1a bends and weaves through that intersection. The sandwich was made to order from among those on the menu board and customized a little by the ingredients from among those called "Mike's way." I always opt for their rosemary bread. The employees were efficient in doing their work and also polite. The prices are in the middle of the pack of the many chain stores making sandwiches, hence fair. This Jersey Mike's 4 stars are "stronger" because the store is so tidy, should you choose to eat in, and the location is excellent. I want to make sure I try different sandwiches at JM I've seen up on their menu board, so I put a small list in the notes on my phone - cold sandwiches 7, 8, and 13 and hot sandwiches 16, 17, 42, 55, and 56. I've checked about half of them off over the last few years.

Instead, I had to drive all the way back to the restaurant. By that point, I was understandably frustrated, and the response at the counter didn't help--the staff seemed indifferent. They did replace the missing items with bagels, which I appreciate, but the overall experience was disappointing. I used to really enjoy Marian's under the previous ownership and was a regular customer. Unfortunately, since the change in ownership, the quality of service seems to have declined. We decided to give it another try, but this experience confirmed that it's just not worth it anymore. Disappointing, because this used to be a go-to spot.
