The actual conversation from the owner and my response.
    Carolyn S.

The owner keeps petitioning to have negative reviews removed. This is why the place has such a high rating. I've literally been INSIDE of this place when posted as OPEN and the lights were dark, I *almost didn't go inside because I thought it was closed. Then I saw the older man walk by on the inside (owner/employee I'm guessing) Having genuine reviews removed because you don't like them is NOT OK. I originally reviewed from the issue of clarity. I genuinely drove 15+ minutes to enjoy what looked like a great deli only to find out that the deli was not open AS ADVERTISED and was a bit bothered over that fact. I wouldn't have driven over if it wasn't open Maybe the guy was having a bad day I don't know but what I DO KNOW is removing negative reviews because you don't like them is BAD BUSINESS. Let people form their own opinions that is the entire point of Yelp. 4/28/25 I'm updating my review to provide a screenshot of the messages between myself and the owner. I do not come on to Yelp just to complain for no reason. Instead of attacking a potential customer for my experience, maybe try actually reading what I wrote. I suggest putting clearer hours for the store so people don't spend their time, and gas, just to show up for a place to be closed. That's the part that I was hoping the owner would see. One day when I'm in the area I hope to be able to update my review on the food. I also want to point out the time of the message. I had gotten there at about 4 and spent a few minutes wondering if it was open due to the darkness and then went inside and spoke with the man there. His response was around 4:30pm the same day. Clearly the deli had been closed prior to 4 ‍ anyways my next review here will be on the food. Fingers crossed

Perfect sandwiches for a river day!

Charley's has been a staple in Petaluma since 1975. This business is locally owned by a family that has been in town forever. This shop has a great selection of liquor, beer on tap, other local snacks, and THE BEST deli sandwiches in town!! Their tri tip special is my absolute favorite

Wow! The RD #1 was fabulous. Warm sandwich with definitely some heat to it. I would certainly order it again. Friendly and excellent service!

Great place to grab a drink and massive sandwich. Came here with my family and we all ordered different sandwiches and absolutely loved them all. Personally, I had half a meatball sub I split with my husband and was very impressed with quality of ingredients and size of the sandwich. The service was very friendly and helpful as well. Can't wait to go back when we visit Petaluma again!

Veggie Sandwich and side of artichoke hearts

Mmmmm their sandwiches, sides, and beer selection are all reasons to check out the store. I got the veggie sandwich, which usually you might expect to be a bit bland (vegetables!!) but there was such a variety of ingredients including avocado, cucumbers, and bean sprouts that the sandwich was a hefty and healthy lunch. A side of artichoke hearts added even more kick to my meal, just the right amount of acid and red bell pepper included in the marinade.

    Chicken pesto club

For $14 plus a tip needless to say I was let down by the "chicken" pesto club. Legit no chicken on half my sandwich. Seems like a neat spot but dang if I didn't feel disappointed.

The tri tip panini special of the day.

Stopped by Charley's for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Charley's has been around for as long as I can remember but I hadn't been there since back in the day when Jimmy worked there. I knew it was back in the Terzian family but I just hadn't been able to check it out yet. We ordered a beer on tap. A very nice Berry White wheat beer. It was really good. With that we had the famous Charley's tri tip. The special was a panini tri tip with carmelized onions, roasted red peppers and pepper jack cheese. It was super fantastically awesome!!! For less then ten bucks it was a great deal that also comes with a side salad. You can sit outside on the patio or inside in the beer bar. It was a nice afternoon so we sat outside. I even ran into a high school alumni working behind the counter. I can't wait to go back and try more beers and more daily lunch specials.

Everything an Italian sandwich should be! They gave me containers of seasoned olive oil and giardiniera to spread on the bread before serving. We had eight adults and we had more than enough, with a piece left over for my lunch today! I also ordered the cucumber salad with feta, which was a great side dish. Both sandwiches, and almost all of them sounded, decadent. I prefered the chicken parm over the turkey that for me, was too much. The turkey had bacon, sauces, cheese on a potential foccacia style bread.. it was a lot. The chicken parm was plain and simple and tasty. The chicken was medium thickness, breadcrumbed and fried. The roll was great and overall I enjoyed it. About $18 for a sandwich, which seemingly is the going rate these days for a sandwich. Fresh, delicious and a solid option for bougie Italian sandwiches.

Unfortunately, today's experience was disappointing. There was one young employee left to handle the register by himself while a line of customers continued to grow. At the same time, there were several completed orders sitting on the counter waiting to be bagged and handed out. My food sat there for about 10 minutes before I finally walked up and asked for it. What made the situation frustrating was that there were multiple other employees standing at the other end of the restaurant talking and laughing while this one employee was clearly overwhelmed, trying to do the work of two people. It wasn't until I asked about my order that another employee came over to help at the register. This isn't a reflection on the young employee he was doing his best under difficult circumstances. My concern is with the lack of teamwork and support from the rest of the staff. The food is still excellent, but I hope management addresses this so employees aren't left struggling alone and customers receive the service they're expecting.
