We went to Charlie's for their Coolinary offering; we were not disappointed. The service was wonderful from everyone. Our server was delightful. We started with the onion rings which were phenomenal as always. I had a wedge salad with bleu cheese and it was so cold and fresh and tasty. I then had a ribeye and we each ordered a different side: asparagus, mushrooms, spinach and au gratin potatoes. Every one was so good. The mushrooms were my favorite. We love coming to Charlie's every year for their coolinary deal. It gives off old school New Orleans vibes, less of a fancy steakhouse. The onion rings are a personal fave of mine, although I will say they are very thin & greasy, so if you prefer thicker cut onion rings they might not be your favorite. The wedge salad was good, but nothing too special. For dinner, I had the filet, which was very good for the price, but could have had a bit more flavor. It was cooked very well though. For sides, I had the sautéed mushrooms, which were delicious. We also ordered the sautéed spinach and potatoes au gratin, which were very good. Overall great experience, just subtracted a star for the flavor of the steak, could use just a little more seasoning. Definitely recommend checking out their coolinary deal! read more

Okay - if you can't grill a steak yourself Uptown .... Dumpy ol' worn nola joint with wait staff not up to snuff to steak house caliber. When they're not standing in line at the bar pestering the one bartender for drinks that they can't even get "rocks" or "neat" right on, they're bumbling into each other going up and down the stairs and around corners never saying "corner" or "behind". I think I only saw one collision and spill. Our waiter was pretty non-attentive. Duly noted and reflected in his tip. Crescent City Steak House has a better vibe and cuts of meat. The Charlie porterhouse is $72 - nothing special. I got a superior one at Fresh Market and grilled it myself and mine is way better. Their onion rings and wedge salad were, however, out standing. The rib eye and sides were fantastic. Creamed spinach and potatoes au gratin were delicious i also loved the Pinot Noir and the prices were very reasonable. The service was excellent and the restaurant is definitely old school New Orleans Italian (kid of mafia vibes decor). There's a random picture of Nixon and Elvis posing together on the wall. The only reason I docked a star is because the wedge salad came with a house made vinaigrette but it was just straight vinegar poured onto the lettuce. So much so I sent it back. And they boasted of pistachio gelato from a well known place in New Orleans but it was not authentic and had way to much food dye coloring. I took a couple of tastes and did not finish the rest. So go for the steak and sides and you can't go wrong. read more

Great example of a simple menu done right. Me and my father checked this place out during Coolinary. We decided to take advantage of the coolinary menu which consisted of a onion ring, starter and your choice of salad. We each got to choose a side and I chose the cream spinach, and he chose the potatoes. The sides were definitely delicious. I will get them both again if I went back. And I chose a 6 ounce steak which I ate before taking a picture of sadly. Everything was really quite nice. I'd never heard of the spumoni ice cream but I really did enjoy it. I would definitely go back again for the steak and to try their other menu options, from what I can tell this place has been a New Orleans staple. We made reservations and were sat quickly so I would suggest doing so. And there is a small parking lot attached to the restaurant. Definitely give this place a try if you're in the area. read more

It's ok. I heard nothing but great things about this place. My husband and I finally got a chance to check them out. Service was great! Place is old but it's an old steakhouse. It's very stale inside. Needs updates and potpourri in there. Some of the wait staff was not friendly at all. Looking at us like we didn't belong. Everything was GREASY. The onion rings was bleh...very very greasy. The potatoes was oily. Same with "the Charlie". I was so excited to come here. The steak did not have flavor. And it was drowned in oil. Wow! I'm so very happy we finally got around to try Charlie's Steak House. We went for my birthday and what a treat! The atmosphere is a little bit upscale casual, very laid back and comfortable. We were quickly served with delicious dirty martinis. Our server was really friendly as she told us how it works and stated the menu. No paper menus but the selection is simple so one is not really needed. We started with the small onion rings, there were plenty of them, they were thin and crispy, probably some of the best I've had. For dinner we both had the 14 oz strips that came sizzling and perfectly medium as we had asked - delicious! I also can't say enough about the potatoes Au gratin, so very creamy and cheesy, they were a perfect side for the steaks. We also splurged on Pistachio Spumoni for dessert. I really wish I'd listened to the negative reviews of this place because I just spent a good chunk of change on a really bad meal. The steak is bad. I ordered the filet, and it comes out on the pan that they cook it on, so everything is sizzling hot, which completely dries out the outside of the steak. Even if the steak is cooked to the right temperature, it's going to taste dry. Oh, and it completely lacks seasoning. My friend had the lamb chops and spent most of the night trying to hack off a piece of edible meat. I have most of her dish in my refrigerator for my dogs. Also, the place looks like a dump. You'd think they'd try and add some sort of ambiance. The bright spots were our server, who was amazing, the bartender, who was charming, and our drinks, which were delicious. Save your money and go somewhere that cares about the food it puts out. read more

It's been way too long but so happy we made our way back. Excellent meal, atmosphere and staff were top notch. We had such the sweetest cute young red-headed waitress (yes I forgot her name "palm to forehead") who was so thorough and on her A game the whole time even keeping up with the shenanigans going on with our party at the table. We started out with Birthday old fashions (only complaint which is personal, Big Luxardo Maraschino Cherries are what I like in my old fashions), followed with blue cheese wedge salads. We skipped the traditional little stack onion rings because we knew the next up to the table which was why we were there to begin with. Then came out that 32oz T-bone, "The Charlie", mushrooms, asparagus and potatoes au gratin which disappeared with not a morsel left on the plates except for the bone. They finished up off with a birthday dessert of ANGELO BROCATO'S Spumoni for the birthday boy. I'd give 10 stars but I'm limited to 5 on the yelp scale. Can't wait to go back and do this again. A meal at Charlie's is more than a meal, it is an experience. My wife and I went to Charlie's last night for dinner and some cocktails. We both had the 10 ounce filet and split some mushrooms and creamed spinach. The steaks were cooked perfectly and the sides were delicious. Keith, Travis, and Brendan were our wait staff, and they were fantastic. I'd really like to see a Luxardo cherry in my old fashioned instead of a red one next time, but they did have Basil Hayden bourbon for it. Besides that, I give it an A+. One of my favorite parts of going to Charlie's is having to hold your napkin up in front of you when they bring your sizzling hot plate, so that you don't get butter splashed all over your shirt. Parking is close, safe, and well lit. Go give it a try. You will be glad you did! read more

A very disappointing "steakhouse". A big chain restaurant will serve you better food than this place. The restaurant is nothing special, if anything a bit run down. The insides are very aged and looks like the inside of a school cafeteria in a way. I think old school decor can be done well, but it just felt like there were few efforts to upkeep the dining room from when it first opened. We were seated downstairs so the upstairs may be different. A ribeye(18oz!!) and a NY strip steaks were ordered a long with a "half order of onion rings", asparagus, and potatoes au gratin. This cost us in the ballpark of $130. The onion rings were piled very high, were very greasy, and were very thin. I would market them as noodles instead of rings. Nothing to really write home about. The asparagus was acceptable but then again, I expected something delicious, not simply acceptable. The potatoes au gratin were the same. They were also very oily and greasy for no reason, just like the onion rings. The ribeye steak was easily the worst steak I have ever tasted for the price($50!). Tough. It was ordered medium rare and the insides looked like mixed up raw ground beef. The ends were tough and it tasted bland. The NY strip steak was the same. It was essentially alive in the middle, and had no flavor. The plate it came on was filled with so much fat and even that somehow managed to taste like it had no seasoning at all! My girlfriend and I both felt sick after eating here and we suspect it was from the insides of our steaks being literally raw. I would not recommend this place to anyone and am very sad that I was unfortunate enough to think it would be a nice restaurant with good food. Do not go here. The prices are not worth the mediocre, bland, and raw "steaks". read more

First visit since the new ownership and it was really lovely. As soon as we sat down, the server, much to my delight, immediately asked if we would like an order of onion rings. Yes please! The martinis were perfection, with ice crystals in them. Steaks were cooked very well- we had the strip and the filet (both $38 each), the filet was more medium well than medium rare but tasted great anyway. The asparagus side I would skip - it was soft and drowning in butter. I realize it might sound ridiculous to complain about butter at a steakhouse, but this was too much. The potatoes au gratin suffered a similar fate - more butter and oil than cheese or potato. Service was excellent, from both the front of the house and our server. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because $38 seems a smidge high for the no-frills atmosphere/experience, and the sides were disappointing (apart from the onion rings, which were phenomenal). I've been a customer of Charlie's Steak House for about 30 years now. It always has been and always will be one of my all-time favorite restaurants in the city. We visited recently to celebrate my brother's birthday. It was wonderful. We reminisced and told stories of previous visits. They have a new owner as of the last couple of years and even so, it's for sure still as I remember. They do have a couple of new menu items and I do believe they are great additions to the menu. One of the new items is the crabmeat au gratin, and it's very good with lots of fresh crab meat. The ribeye steak I had this visit was one of the best I've ever had here. While I do miss the days of old and the rowdiness of the restaurant and the pay phone across from the bar that customers got to answer when it was really busy, it's for sure still Charlie's and will always hold a special place in my heart from 30 wonderful years of making memories here. Firstly we arrived right at our reservation time and still had to stand awkwardly near the bar for about 20 minutes for a table. The steak was actually FLAVORLESS. I don't even know how this is possible. Bartender was loudly rude and slamming things around ( heard all his complaints while waiting for our table) staff was rude overall. We got onion rings as an appetizer which was good ($8). For entreés we got an 18oz ribeye ($54) and a 10oz filet ($48) with potatoes au gratin ($9.75) and cream spinach ($9.75) as sides. The steaks were super bland. It tasted like they grilled them with no seasoning or marinate and dumped butter on it. The sides were okay, the cream spinach better than the potatoes. The atmosphere was interesting upstairs, but nothing to rave about. For the cost, I wouldn't recommend. Our bill was $156, so $186 with tip. There are definitely better dinner options in New Orleans. The parking lot is tight, so if you have a large vehicle, park on the street. Walking in, we were greeted with a friendly voice that sat us right away. There is a bar downstairs and seating up and downstairs. There is nothing special about the decor or seating. It was pretty plain Jane, so wearing jeans to this steakhouse is ok. We started off with the onion rings, this is their classic appetizer. I have to say, they were great. We then went on to order a side of Creamed Spinach, Augrautin potatoes, filet mignon, and a Ribeye. The Filet was cooked perfectly along with the Creamed Spinach. The potatoes came in chucks vs being Sliced which was different for me. My husband said that the Ribeye had more grissel on in than he would have preffered. I stopped for a last minute dinner with a friend on Tuesday and the joint was PACKED. I always forget about the college graduation dinners happening mid-May. We were thankful to have a table. We started with a dirty martini and an old fashioned both were perfect. Then we shared the wedge salad (with thousand island dressing) and she got a ribeye and I got a tuna steak. Both were perfection. My tuna came with broccoli and we ordered asparagus, potato wedges and crabmeat au gratin. Everything was delicious. Service was on point. And the random paintings and decor upstairs are still the same. Parking is available in the lot next door. We came here for Mother's Day dinner this past Saturday. I made the reservation a week ahead. They have limited hours here. They are only open at night and they are closed on Sundays. Reservations are definitely necessary. They are located within a neighborhood Uptown. Parking is limited, however they do have a small lot next door. We were able to park in the lot, thankfully. They did not give us menus. The server recited the menu. I'm not sure if this is due to the pandemic, or that's how it always is? They do have a limited menu. It's basically steaks and a few sides to choose from. That's it. We did not know the price of anything because it was not listed anywhere, not even their website. We figured it was most likely on par with all the other steak restaurants in the area, and everything sold a la carte, as well. All 3 of us in our party ordered the 10oz Filet Mignon. We chose 3 sides to split. We got the French Fries, Potatoes Au Gratin and Creamed Spinach. I was tempted to get a wedge salad, but they only offer Blue Cheese, Thousand Island and Italian for salad dressing options. No Ranch? Odd.. So, I skipped the salad this time. Also, they do not give you any bread to snack on while you wait. I thought that was kind of odd also, but it was no biggie. The food was all served to us on no frills plateware. The Filet Mignon was very good. We enjoyed all the sides as well. Very tasty. We split some Spumoni Ice Cream and Oreo Cheesecake following the meal. They were both also good. Charlie's Steak House was opened up back in 1932 by Charlie Petrossi and Charlie's Steak House was one of the last places I ate at before Hurricane Katrina hit and that was back when Charlie's daughter Miss Dottye was still working and in those days she told you what you were ordering and not the other way around. Charlie's was closed after Katrina due to flood damage until Matthew Dwyer who had worked as a bartender in Charlie's was able to purchase the business with his father to repair and re-open the business 3 years after the storm hit. The last time I ate at Charlies was in March of 2020 right before the pandemic lockdowns closed most restaurants and then tragically in June Matthew Dwyer, the owner, died at the age of 49 leaving the future of Charlie's uncertain again. We learned in December that local chef and restaurant owner Aaron Burgau had taken over Charlie's and it would soon be re-opening and so a group of my friends were excited to have Charlie's back open and we recently went to enjoy a great dinner. Charlie's is a bit less fun than it used to be when they would just come up to your table and say "ya want a medium or large... wait never mind we're out of medium so you get a large." Then they would just bring you onion rings whether you ordered them or not and then you better had eaten them all or else! They are a bit less set in their ways since Katrina and they cleaned out a lot of the awesome built up funk of accumulated decades but it mostly still tastes the same. You still get your meat sizzling on a metal platter so hot that it will permanently brand you if you touch it. The selection is much expanded and now you actually get to have some choice in the matter of your steak and it seems to be a bit better quality than previously.
