**3.5 stars** Just finished up with a relaxing Thai massage, literally steps from this restaurant...they share the same courtyard so it's nice to plan for some relaxation and dining without having to drive elsewhere. Place is small with limited items on the menu but a good variety. My friend and I ordered the lunch, rice plate of BBQ pork, pad Thai and fried spring rolls to share. Unfortunately, wasn't a fan of the BBQ pork which was thin pieces of pork which was smoky (not an issue) but DRY accompanied with a fish, vinegar sauce....bbq pork for me didn't hit the spot with flavor (more savory), texture but the pad Thai was delicious! I rarely order a pad Thai because it can be a little too sweet but they made a good one which had a nice balance of flavors! Amazing meal. Started with calamari, which was good. Square cut squid was heavily battered and deep fried. A very good appetizer, no complaints, but the meal improved from there. We next shared a bowl of Tom Yum soup, with shrimp added to it. Fantastic. I could have eaten that all night. Slightly spicy, sour and fragrant, this soup knocked my socks off. We then shared an order of Sweet Sole. Again, pretty fantastic. The batter in the fried fish was very crispy, but not greasy, and the fish was tender and not over cooked. We each also had a side of jasmine rice and a Thai iced tea. All of this came to a total under $52! We were stuffed and couldn't eat anymore. Thank you yelp! I honestly would not have known about this location on el Camino if it weren't for yelp. It's a pretty small and cozy restaurant but due to its location, parking may be an issue. I ordered the beef noodle soup and shared the steamed dumplings with curry sauce as an appetizer. The dumplings were pretty standard. Personally, I like fried dumplings because I don't like how soft they get when steamed. The sauce is pretty good too! It's a little liquidity so pour it inside the dumpling. The beef noodle soup was very flavor intensive and filling. I don't eat a lot of meat but I did try one out and it was pretty chewy for me so I didn't bother to try another piece. I had a few bites of the crab fried rice and that was yummy. I would definitely come back to try the other items on the menu and maybe try the beef noodle soup again to see if the beef is just as chewy. read more

Don't go here, and if you do go here, don't get Pad Thai, and if you do go here and get Pad Thai, please do ME a favor and empty it onto about 15 paper towels before consuming. I grabbed an order of to-go Pad thai on Friday night 11/1 and as I was starving, I came home and wolfed it down. As I ate more and more I started to feel sick and when I tilted the container, that much oil came out of just that many noodles (see pic). I hope I don't give your eyes cardiac arrest, but at least it's visual proof. Chicken pad thai - the noodles were not overcooked, the portion size was generous, but the sauce had a tad too much of ketchup taste. Still pretty good. Beef Pad See Ew - Noodles were nicely cooked and the dish wasn't overly sweet. Fresh shrimp rolls - I wasn't a fan of the iceberg lettuce in these rolls. Penang curry with Chicken - loved the flavor of the sauce and the portion was generous. Overall, I think this is a pretty good Thai place, and probably the best in San Mateo. Has not been in for a long time , during pandemic they only had a takeaway service. First time back, service is polite but not good. My main dish arrived halfway through starter with only two tables occupied felt like they were in a hurry but then sat a long time after I was finished before they picked up my plates. Overhyped. The portions are very SMALL. I really don't recommend families coming here to share, unless you have a small appetite or just willing to spend more money lol. I definitely wouldn't bring mine here for sure. I was so disappointed with the Pad See Ew. Not only were the portions super tiny, but it was ridiculously too salty. There was so much sauce on the bottom of the noodles. I ended up having to order a side of white rice to balance out the saltiness of it. This was probably one of the worst Pad See Ew dishes I've ever had. The service was friendly, so no complaints with that. Charm is a nice, cute Thai eatery in the San Mateo area that I had the pleasure of eating lunch in. It's a smaller, narrow restaurant that seems like it's occupied by a lot of the local crowd that are familiar with the restaurant. Once seated, you'll see mostly normal Thai eats here. I came for lunch so I opted for the pad thai lunch special which was about $12ish and opted to go with the default chicken option. I also got the mint lemonade for another $3ish. The pad thai came out pretty quickly and for the most part, was a solid pad thai and was filling. Ask for the hot sauce to get some of the nicer options on the side that includes all your Thai garnishes. The mint lemonade was refreshing although a tad sweet for me personally. Service was super kind and friendly with some helpful advice when I needed to choose between a few of the items. I believe I only saw street parking (I walked so can't say for certain). read more

While run by authentic, nice Thai folks I found the food to be hit or miss. =======How was the food?======= * Pumpkin Chicken Curry - 3.5 stars: Standard but good pumpkin chicken curry. Chicken was a bit dry and the dish itself was sparse as expected with most Thai restaurants. * Coconut Rice - 4 stars: Loved the chewy coconut rice but wish it wasn't $3 for a tiny bowl. * Mango Sticky Rice - 3.5 stars: Would have been 4 but the mangoes weren't ripe. Liked it still and would get it again! * Pad Thai - 2.5 stars: Soooo so so bland. The 2 shrimp it came with were tasty, and there was also a bit of chicken, but it needed way more protein. The noodle texture was decent but I've had much better pad thai at Aroy (Palo Alto). Charm Thai is a cute small Thai restaurant in San Mateo. Found this place in the fall and have ordered several times since. The noodle & rice dishes we've tried are delicious, but they really shine with curry. Yellow, panang, omg. So good. Rich, creamy, and flavorful, well-seasoned, with a good ratio of meat/tofu and veggies. Can't wait to try them all. Their time estimate is never quite "on" and we've had issues with the online ordering system, so it's easier to just call your order in and then give yourself an extra few minutes beyond their estimate to arrive. As someone who puts hot sauce on just about everything, spicy level 3 was good enough for me to have some heat, with the option to add more heat at home to my liking. I will say the spicy level was a little uneven - the last time we ordered, the pad see ew was quite spicy (bordering too spicy) while the curry was just right. If that's a concern for you, I recommend ordering lower and adding your own hot sauce/chili paste of choice. We have ordered for 2 people and 4 people and have always had leftovers with one dish "per person". Don't forget to order rice for your curry! read more

Not really sure what people are ordering, but I thought this food was mediocre at best. Ordered the Pad Kee Mao with pork and spicy pork salad. Pad Kee Mao: First of all, I wasn't asked for a spice level which was strange. When the food came out it was mild at best and I'm used to my pad kee mao having at least a little kick. There was minimal depth in flavor and not enough meat, and the noodles were a little too soft and mushy. The portion was average at best -- not sure why people said this was a big portion. At $10.95 this wasn't cheap, but not awful. They also included bamboo which was different but a nice change. Spicy pork salad: uneven distribution of spice and the dressing is WAY too sweet and overpowering. There's also not enough veggie/salad compared to the meat. I would definitely ask for the dressing on the side. At $9.50, it was also average at best. Parking is also tough! Probably wouldn't come back. Oh well. read more

So thankful we live walking distance from this place because their food is amazing! We've tried nearly everything from here and none of it disappoints. I especially love their specialty menu like crab pad thai or crab fried rice. Their salmon rolls are also one of my favorites. Our neighbor is Thai and said their Thai iced tea is super authentic and she wouldn't even bother making it herself, because Charm Thai iced tea is that good. Their covid protocols are extremely well set up too. You can order via phone or online and then they have a little pickup area on the side patio. Yummy but spicy!! I got the Tom kha soup and pad see ew, both were delicious!! I got 1* spicy on the soup, and 2* on the noodles. I figured the sweetness of the noodles would cancel out the spicy...wrong!!!! This place takes spicy seriously. You can see in my picture that there is plenty of chili with the seeds. Still delicious, I just had to get a glass of water to sip on (yes I am a weenie). Just be warned that this is a legit Thai place in terms of spice!!! I almost got 3*, boy would I have been sad then. **COVID related: -Good: ordering/pick up is outside. Safe if less than 4-5 people in queue. -Bad: staff only wears masks if working the window. You can clearly see from the front window who is/isn't wearing masks and whether they're eating or just shooting the breeze -Ugly: no mask, yes service -- they will serve maskless customers. Yes, you'll have to stand next to them. If this doesn't align with your Covid practices, Charm might not be for you. Consider a (currently discounted) gift card for post-pandemic dining. FOOD -- we've been to Charm for both dine-in/take-out pre-pandemic and tonight is our first try during Covid. The current situation is no dine-in/no outdoor dining in Bay Area. A few staples: Green Curry -- generous amount of fragrant green curry with fresh veggies. Lots of sauce to dip and spread. Pad Thai -- chewy tangy noodles with good wok-sear. Likely ketchup based, but reminds me of college take-out. Thai Fried rice -- not a lot to write home about.. a little oily, but a guilty pleasure VALUE -- portion sizes are good. Curries come with enough sauce for a second round, if adding more meat/veg. No free rice, but most households have this. TIP -- fine ground white pepper goes great w/Thai food and is even better freshly ground at home. CONCLUSION -- 4 stars for food, 3 stars for.. current practices.
