Finally a true outdoor rooftop bar in SF! Yes there are places like The View with a great view, but I enjoy sitting outside and catching up with friends over a great view of downtown SF (as long as weather permits, of course), and that's where Charmaine's comes in. Located in the Proper Hotel, the correct entrance to use for Charmaine's is in the back (on McAllister St) as you have to wait in line for the elevator to take you up. The rooftop is set up so that half of the seating is outdoors with fire pits but the other half is indoors with cozy couches, if you don't feel like freezing your butt off. I came on a Monday evening a little before 9, and Charmaine's was full outside but there was still plenty of seating inside. As expected, the drinks here are pricey. All cocktails are $16, and they have some small plates as well. I went with the Proper Cup cocktail, which consists of Pimms, Hendrick's gin, cucumber, pomegranate, lemon, lime, ginger ale, and star anise. I was pleasantly surprised by how sweet this drink was, as I prefer my drinks on the sweeter side. It's a great place to catch up with a friend or go on a date (definitely saw quite a bit of that going on), or even for holding a small and intimate birthday gathering. I can see this place getting packed over the weekend though, so I would recommend coming on a random weekday night like I did. read more

Great cocktails and awesome rooftop views. The bar is located on the top floor of The SF Proper Hotel. There may be a wait to get through the elevators during peak times. They have an outdoor patio area with fire pits, heated lamps and couches to cozy up. Be prepared to wait a bit to have your cocktail made. If you're unsure of what to get, just let the bartender know your preferred liquor and flavor/taste. read more

It's been a few weeks for me to process and write this review. PROS: -Cute cat-theme drink names -Pork Belly Skewers -Rooftop Bar, good views. CONS: -Each person has to spend $65 and it was so poorly explained by the hostess before we were brought up. She made it sound like it was a cover to just get in and her tone also seemed like she didn't think we could afford it. Communication skills could be improved here. -Not inclusive or friendly to pumping moms. With a cover on, I pumped by the bathroom and was checked on multiple times (by MEN STAFF from a far) and then was followed back to where I was sitting by two staff members for them to realize that yes, I was already a guest that stepped away for a moment to pump. They should have just let it go when they made that realization, but still wanted to ask me about it...totally the wrong move, guys. Spare you the details. I feel like we should be pass this... moms should be able to go out with their girlfriends and not feel uncomfortable about needing to step away to provide for their baby. -Someone (not our waiter) asked us for water and then when we said no, they just tossed the pitcher of water in the bush next to us.. wtf?! -Turned off just our fire pit on the rooftop an hour before closing and not one person tried to fix it lol.... Based on the experiences above, perhaps staff just needs better training. Everyone interaction we had (except from our waiter) was questionable. Charmaine's is indeed charming, but it failed to win my heart (despite the many Instagram photo ops). Arriving at the Google maps address, you are greeted and escorted into an elevator. Like many rooftop bars, I think this is to keep track of the number of guests for fire hazard and safety reasons, but it also makes Charmaine's feel like a hidden gem in the hustle and bustle of Downtown SF. You step out into a gorgeous space with majestic vintage furniture with a theme of vivid colors and bold patterns. The decor is beyond picture-perfect and looks like those surreal Pinterest posts that you never really see in real life. Now time for the first caveat: SF isn't exactly cut for rooftop bars. The weather can get chilly (it's thoughtful of Charmaine's to provide plenty of fire pits outside and a fireplace inside), and Karl the Fog can completely obliterate the multi-million-dollar SF view (in which case you can still admire the furniture). Flipping back to the positives. The cocktail menu is something else. The descriptions are so elegant, the alcohol base is a level-up (think Grey Goose, Suntory Toki, Hendrick's), and you can't get over the incredibly aesthetic presentation. They also have an interesting array of bar bites that's a mix of global fare ranging from crudité to quesadillas to tuna tartare. I got the Stray Mob (one of the better whiskey-based cocktails I've had) and tried some fries (had a nice crisp and I liked the kewpie mayo dipping sauce) and maitake tempura (unique, but a bit greasy for my tastes). Somehow I ended up spending over $30 total for one drink and pitching in for my portion of the shared snacks. I think the price tag of a $16 cocktail and $9 for fries with ketchup and mayo (this could literally get you a meal at Chipotle!) is a bit much, even for a classy rooftop bar in SF. Plus, I asked the server three times for a glass of water and it never came. Overall, Charmaine's is a neat place, but definitely not somewhere I'd visit frequently. The drinks are good but expensive, the food is alright and expensive, and the ambiance is nice but practically speaking, some of the cool-looking stools aren't really that comfortable. read more

So the hubby and I came here on Easter Sunday for before dinner cocktails. We had no ideal where it was located as our daughter made the reservations. I would suggest taking a Uber or cab as the neighborhood is quite sketchy! We had to park several blocks away and walk past several encampments with people blocking the sidewalk. But no-one said a word or bothered whew. After reaching the place and taking the elevator up, the doors opened and the view was amazing! The hostess found us a small table in the perfect spot. We only wanted to order drinks but decided to order an appetizer that we saw on the menu. Just to say we weren't disappointed and will be coming back here often! read more

Worst place in SF besides the view. I came here thinking they would have decent bar bites and a nice wine selection. The menu was horrible/cheap crap disgustingly horrible! The glass of wine I ordered: they were out of. The server told us after ordering there is a $150 minimum so I canceled my glass of champagne and asked for a bottle They were out of my selection of a bottle too and tried to push some other champagne on me what was far cheaper than what I ordered The marinated olives I ordered came with no napkins or cup for my pita so I put the pita on the table. Service a little slow for our group of 10, we were trying to meet their minimum spend before our next scheduled reservation, but had trouble flagging down the waitress a few times. The drinks were tasty, a little overpriced- but the atmosphere was beautiful. We sat around a fire pit outside and had excellent city views. Recommend to reserve before hand. There will be a wait or cannot be seated when full. The doorman is nice and if the party is rowdy they will send you back so don't drink too much before hand. Once going up to Charmaine's they will lead you to your seat, very kind. I requested to be seated at the patio, luckily there was a cancellation and we were allowed to ;)! The interior is chic and cute, dimmed down lights. It is pricy but the cocktails are great and even the desserts are just right. Not too sweet in my experience. The service is prompt and check-in frequently. The view is nice overlooking SF, it can be cold so layer up just in case. Great stop for a dressy and celebratory occasion I suppose. read more

I really liked their drinks! They have a variety of cocktails (and interesting names for them!) as well as beers and wines. I like sweeter drinks and enjoyed both of the ones I tried: + Let Me Touch Your Mind: rum, coconut cream, pineapple, lime; blended & topped with negroni + Salem Saberhagen: gin, orange muscat, pineapple, honeycomb, lime Try to get here earlier if possible - I came here around 8:30pm on a random Wednesday with a friend, and almost every seat inside & outside was already taken. Luckily we were able to grab some seats as the previous occupants left. The view wasn't as amazing as I was expecting - mostly the sides of other buildings and some random streets - but it's one of the very few rooftop bars around, so it's still a nice place if you want to just be able to get some fresh air while chatting. read more

We visited Charmaine's while staying at Proper Hotel last week. I booked a reservation far in advance via OpenTable. I made a special request on my reservation and it is obvious they don't look at those requests as our special occasion was never mentioned once during our visit, and we were not seated in an area I requested. Other than that, the experience was decent. The ambiance is very nice. Bring a jacket if you sit outside! (The fire pits helped but we went on a windy/chilly evening and def still needed our coats!) The food and drinks were delicious. The presentation was lackluster, but the flavor profiles made up for the appearance! Overall if you are looking for a nice place in SF with an upscale vibe, and delicious food/drinks, I would recommend a visit! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Proper Hotel and hope to visit Proper and Charmaine's next time we are in the city! read more

We are rooftop bars junkies so learning about Charmaine's was a "how have never heard about this place?" moment. We came from out of town so we were really excited to take it all in especially the views. I wanted to know what I should wear so I looked at pictures here on yelp to get the real scoop on the dress code... true to what I found, Charmaine's is a smart casual type of place so don't worry about having to dress up to the nines. The reservation process was simple and straightforward, no complaints there. Once we arrived at the front there was a small line to be greeted by security, they will check you in and take you to the elevators going up to the restaurant. Press the button to go all the way up and prepare to take in a great view and beautiful ambiance. We were greeted by a friendly waiter right away and he took us to an outdoor table with a cozy fire pit. Remember it's cool ol' San Francisco so bring a sweater! Everything up to this point was great. Here come a couple of cons: -We know it's cold in SF but the fire pit was not on all the way and the heater above was broken so we were a little extra cold. -I really wanted to try the "The Baumer" drink but they were out :( I mean they only have so many drinks on the menu they shouldn't be running out of their top drinks. We had to enter from the back side away from Market Street. After entering, you go up a bunch of elevator floors to the roof top, where there is a nice bar with indoor seating, as well as a nice patio area that has a fair view of the city. The lounge and overall beauty of it is great, the service though is lacking. My friend and I sat outside and the server that was going around didn't ever end up taking our order. We ended up just going back to the bar and ordering our order directly from there. The bartender was great though, he made a drink recommendation and it ended up being pretty good. I enjoyed the taste of both drinks and it was kind of nice just talking, sipping, and looking at the city. So I would come to enjoy the scenery, but would not expect too much in the way of service. read more

A lovely rooftop bar in the heart of SF. I'll be honest I did not know it was in the Tenderloin. My friend was taking me around and I just followed no questions asked lol. There are two security guards right outside who check IDs. I felt pretty safe the entire time. Upstairs at the bar, there's quite a few firepits that you can sit around to keep warm or you can sit in the indoor area. We were there for July 4th so we opted to sit outside in hopes of catching some of the fireworks. By luck, we actually did see some! Luckily it wasn't too cloudy. I ordered a kamikaze cocktail and we shared fries and a charcuterie plate. I would say it is a little overpriced but it's to be expected for a rooftop bar. Service was friendly however they didn't come by often enough we had to flag service staff down to order more food. Overall it was a lovely experience! read more

Another cool cocktail bar that I was impressed with. After our adventure to Novela, my friend wanted to hit up one my bar. I'm not really sure who she found out about this place but I'm glad she did. We waited outside for a sec while the doorman checked our ID's. He gave the ok to go up and we went up the elevator. When we got out, we tried to look for a table. It wasn't super packed but most tables were taken. We got lucky and snagged a couch with a fire in front. Actually now that I think about it, most of the seats had a fire in front which was nice! I get cold super easily! x x lol. But that view! I love rooftop bars! Yea. The views aren't like the views from Top of the Mark but it's still cool just seeing all the buildings around. It felt like I was in Hey Arnold or like the Dark Knight or something. It's just something about being up high in a bar with good peeps and just shooting the breeze. Oh shoot! I need a cocktail. I took a peek at the menu and decided since it was the last drink tonight, I was gonna end on something bourbony. I went with Songs from the Brill Building because I wanted to savor a good whiskey cocktail and I did just that. The drink itself reminded me of a fancier Manhattan. The Sherry and Cherry Herring blended so well with the bourbon. It was never too much where it could of taken away from the bourbon flavor. The flavors complimented each other well. I also wanted to give a special shout out to the ketchup and mayonnaise there. They are both made from scratch and they totally taste like they do. Potato fans will enjoy dipping their fries in high quality sauces at Charmaines! Your typical "trendy" SF hotel rooftop bar filled with pretentious millennials= NOT MY KINDA PLACE...But this is not the reason for the 3 stars. Here's the reason for it: The hotel is in a SUUUUPPPEEERRR sketchy area with homeless encampments, drug user shooting up openly in the streets, people urinating and defecating on the sidewalks and having mental health crises. Very sad and also very unsafe. Parking sucked and if you found a spot near by it was because it was in a really bad stretch of homeless people. I parked about 4 blocks away by City Hall and still felt unsafe. When you arrive at the hotel the "host" who appeared to be more of a security guard and honestly wasn't at all pleasant, checks you in for your reservation and then calls security (probably to verify the card you had to leave on file is valid) and then escorts you to an elevator. The hostess upstairs escorted us to a cute table with a super uncomfortable couch with a very low table that was pretty uncomfortable to eat from. Then we waited quite a while before our server arrived to give us the bar code menu. Then we waited. Finally got water and ordered food. We ordered coffee and Im not a coffee snob but it truly SUCKED! I could have gotten a better cup at 711. My boyfriend ordered the proper breakfast which was supposed to have mushrooms and asparagus and neither was on the plate. Instead there was corn and a pinch of arugula. No one even stated those 2 items were out or would be substituted. I ordered the smoked polenta that was supposed to come with a fried egg, it was poached. I ordered a side of toast and was told is was coming out...but it never did. I watched other food and drink orders come out and be delivered to other tables yet a side of toast was too much to bring out. Our server also disappeared for the entirety of the meal so I was never able to tell him about it until he came back to clear our plates and deliver the check which I asked for the toast to be removed. Came here on a Monday night to celebrate the end of our legal writing class. For a Monday night, it was more busy than I'd have thought it to be. There's both indoor and outdoor seating. Although the outdoor seating has fireplaces, it can still get cold out there--bring a coat. The bar has a great view of the city, and I would say the dress code is just a small step above casual. The elevator up to the rooftop can only accommodate I believe 8 people at a time, so that's why you'll sometimes see people waiting outside the building to get in. They have a large drink menu boasting many cocktails, hard liquor, wine, and beer although I would say their speciality is cocktails. Think along the lines of floral notes, unique liquors, different fruits, and orgeat syrups--that all act to add a twist to your classic cocktails or in most cases create something new altogether. But if that stresses you out, they're more than capable of making your classic cocktails or well drinks with your favorite alcohol. They've also got their share of top shelf alcohol too. While waiting for my drink, I noticed some Don Julio 1942, Macallan 18, and the menu also included Dom Perignon. While not quite in my price range, it's worth noting that you don't see these everywhere. They also have a small bites menu to pair with your drink. We ordered the fries and churros and both were good. But their small plates are probably best after a full meal somewhere else first. It's kind of pricey, but that's expected whenever you go to a rooftop bar in any city--let alone San Francisco. read more

The bar is classy and upscale with floor to ceiling windows, along with a gorgeous outdoor space with fire pits and heat lamps. The drinks are both tasty and beautifully presented. For special celebrations, people naturally gravitate towards restaurants with something special to offer. Here, it is the well-situated rooftop bar with sweeping views of downtown SF. The ambiance is uniquely intimate with seating comprised of stools and low chairs arranged around a central firepit. There are small side tables to place your drinks and food. SERVICE/EXPERIENCE: 1/5. That being said our experience was immensely disappointing. A friend had made reservations for our group of 10 two months in advance. When we arrived, they seated us closer to the center, away from the views, almost like a waiting area that was very dissatisfying. Not only that but we were nearly elbow to elbow and there was clearly not enough table space for 10 people. Their excuse? A wedding party that was due to arrive. Nearly half an hour later we were able to be reseated, however the host had mentioned that the new spot was not ideal due to the winds. This was not true. The new spot was situated in a corner and had ample space. The morale of the group began to improve. However, service was palpably slow and we had to check in on our drinks not just once, but several times. It was also very difficult to flag down a server to get the bill at the end. FOOD/DRINKS 4/5. Exceeded expectations. My favorite was the pork belly lettuce wraps. Nearly everyone in my group got the burger which was also really delicious. Yakitori was subpar. Drinks were also really solid. The final consensus of my group is largely echoed here. Amazing food, ambiance, and drinks but the initial experience of being relegated to the center without enough room really put us off. I would not trust this spot for future events and concur with other reviewers here who have had similar experiences. Please address the subpar service offered to your customers who come here expecting something extraordinary and instead leave with a bad aftertaste. read more

Charmaine's was a place I was super excited to visit because of the rooftop bar. I haven't found many in SF, so I had high hopes for this one! Sadly, It didn't quite meet the mark. The location is one problem that isn't fully in their control. However, we didn't feel safe walking outside around the hotel/bar and Ubered to/from the bar. Despite this, the cocktails we ordered were tasty, and the atmosphere on the rooftop was lively and fun. The decor was cute and eclectic, and they had fireplaces that double as tables. Be warned--sometimes they don't have enough toppers for the fireplaces and you can be stuck holding your drink/food! The food we ordered was good, but the cocktails were the main draw here. The fries were nice and crispy, but the olives weren't great. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience but I wouldn't say this was my favorite bar in SF. I would recommend going here if you want to enjoy a sunny day or if you want to show friends a panoramic view of the city. read more

I was not expecting this place to be this bad. The reason I came here is because I saw TikTok and looked at the vibe of the place and it looked really cool, so I thought to check it out. Here are my thoughts: Location: 1/5 - Since I am not from San Francisco, I don't really know the neighborhoods too well, but we approached the area and it looked dangerous. Then I found that this area was called tenderloin district, which I saw was a extremely high-crime area, so I would not recommend to come at night. Service: 2/5 - I am basing this mainly off front of house service. We came a bit early for our reservation and they told us to wait until our reservation time (Came at 745 for an 815 reservation, which is understandable). However, when there were other parties arriving who had no reservation at all and were walk-ins, they basically got a table once the security guy radio'd up to people upstairs, which makes no sense. How are you going to give tables to walk-ins who made no reservation, but not to people who actually took time to make the reservation? In terms of our actual server once we got in, he checked in on us at the right times and I had no problem with his service. But overall service has to be lower due to the beginning. Price: 2/5 - I think for the food that we got, it is definitely over-priced for some of the items. For example, we got pretzel bread with beer-cheese that cost 12 bucks. You would think it would be unique if it costs 12 bucks, but I could have the gotten pretzel bread for like 5 bucks at Costco and the sauce for a couple bucks. That is how the pretzel bread tasted like. The drinks were fairly priced for its taste, so no complaints on that. Overall, my recommendations would be to get drinks or come during brunch time! The food was average, but it should definitely not be priced like that. As for the front of house, if someone makes a reservation, you should value that over someone who did not make a reservation because it makes no sense to serve walk-ins a table first. read more

Gigi our waitress was wonderful and the ambiance was nice with the fire pit and rooftop . When we first walked in the hostess was nice and took us upstairs. We were also guests of the hotels. When we got upstairs our reservation sitting was at a bar? No, not with reservations. So we asked for other sitting and was told by Anderson or Antonio (can't remember his name) there were not other seats due to reservations and we could sit at the broken fire pit table. I guess our reservation didn't matter, we sat at the broken fire pit table because we wanted the rooftop view which was blocked by the bushes on the roof. The seats were really low to the ground with no backs and uncomfortable, some of the chairs were even ripped. Gigi sat us at a higher table outside still and that view was much better. I feel this should have been offered to us from the beginning. We ordered the lemongrass chicken wings- dry and flavorless I sent it back and we also ordered the cod dip no added seasoning it just didn't taste that good to me sent that back too. We also ordered truffle fries which were good but we noticed the more we ate they got more soggy. Seemed like whatever sauce they used was placed on the bottom of the fries so the fries are sitting in it at the bottom of the bowl. The fish tacos were ordered as a replacement and were good. Another hostess asked us if we wanted to sit by a working fire pit which we agreed because we were done with our meal. The reserved tables that we were told we couldn't sit there were never filled they also sat another couple at a working fire pit that came after us. We made the best of it and was happy Gigi was our waitress. Frankly I wouldn't come back. I rarely send food back but I just didn't feel right paying that much for something I didn't like. OMG, how cute is this place?! I am absolutely in love with this place! And why and how am I so late to even know this existed? They have a the cutest rooftop bar/lounge with a nice view of the city and a full bar for you to order any drink of your choice! The service is superior and so are the views! I'm def in love with this place and cannot wait to come back real soon to check them out again soon! Just and FYI or heads up, you can call in advance to make RSVP's for you and your party. DO NOT COME HERE!!!! I honestly don't even know where to start with this place. If I could give 0 stars, I would. I had reservations at 9 PM. I arrived at 8:50, and the host was nowhere to be seen. So we waited for a little bit in front of the building, in a less than ideal neighborhood in the SF cold. When the host checked us in, he told us that there were no tables available, so we'd have to wait, and gestured us into the hotel lobby. Apparently, our table wasn't ready until 9:20. He took us into the elevator, and he apologized for the smell and told us that maintenance was already informed: it straight up smelled like raw fish, I could have sworn I was at a fish market. We got up to the bar, and again, no hostess. After a few minutes, one popped up and sat us down. The server came around 9:30 to take our order, and we ordered 4 drinks total. Super easy and simple right? Wrong. Our drinks didn't arrive until 10PM. At that point, we knew we weren't going to stay long, so we asked for the check. That came out super quickly. The drinks were awful; didn't even taste like liquor, but tasted like hand sanitizer. I don't like leaving alcohol go to waste, but this was atrocious. 2/4 of the drinks were barely tolerable, but the other 2 were the worst types of cocktails I've ever experienced. And to top it all off, at 10:15, the hostess came back otu to tell us that they were closing. So, 30 min wait for a table, and another 30 minutes to get our drinks, and 15 minutes to enjoy it all. Very nice. Also, the drinks were 19$ each, and we couldn't even get 15 minutes to consume them, not that they were worth consumption. I don't know who came up with the menus, who the bartenders are, but this place needs to seriously revamp and rethink their business model. It's a small bar, with limited seating. Usually I don't post reviews (especially negative ones) but felt the need to shine a light on our specific experience. My group and I had made a reservation for 4:30 for which we had arrived at 4:40 - still within the 15 minute grace period. The group ahead of us in line with the same 4:30 reservation was let immediately in, however, when it came our turn, the host said we were not in the system despite us showing him our open table and email confirmations. We were put aside for around 35 minutes when he suddenly says "oh wait i see you guys in the system now, but your reservation was for 4:30 and its 5:05 now so we cant seat you". He then gets a message on his speaker phone asking for the situation for our group and he tells the manager "theyre still waiting here but they came 45 minutes late". Our group insisted he rephrase what he had said since we WERE on time and had been set aside due to them not being able to find us in the system and the downstairs host simply refused to correct his wording. Additionally, while waiting here our friend needed to use the restroom to which she was told "restrooms are for customers only". At this point the service was worse than your run of the mill fast food chain store. 55 mins later, we were able to get let up with the caveat that we could only stay for one hour since we were ONE HOUR LATE. So basically, they had made us wait an hour, made it a point that we needed to leave in one hour for a mistake they made, and also still wanted us to commit to the $75 spend a person. This is where we clarified the situation to the manager and we compromised we would be willing to be shifted around to accommodate their reservation schedule.. ultimately we ended up not moving but the whole situation was extremely frustrating. Honestly, Id give this place a 3 purely based on their foods, drinks and view/aesthetic but i will not be coming back to their 0 rating for service. read more

DONT GO HERE DO. NOT. GO. HERE. Now I see why there are poor reviews for this spot. After waiting in a long line already, I asked the bouncer what's going on and was told they have a "timer" for letting people in. I asked if they were at capacity, which would've at least made a bit more sense, but that wasnt the case. The most frustrating part of my experience here is that the bouncer allowed a group of 3 to hold up the line. The group was allowed to go in, there was room for them, and the group chose not to go in to "wait for 2 friends". Instead of the bouncer asking the next group behind them (us, 4) which would be allowing more people to go in, they held up the line for the 3 people who were "waiting for their 2 friends". The group of 3 turned into a group of 12, the bouncer watching and letting "their friends" cut in front of us and a already long line of people behind us waiting as well. Like really? Overall the bouncer allowed a very small group to turn into a larger group, hold us and a very long line of people in addition up in line, and we waited an additional 30 min after we were aware there was enough capacity for us. After getting in, it wasn't even that busy. The vibe was cool but it wasn't worth the wait for me, and the bouncer killed our mood. Extremely horrible customer experience. This place needs to improve their training for bouncers, and not lets mobs of people cut through lines since the next group is "waiting for a friend". read more

We went twice during a recent stay at the San Francisco Proper. We liked the ambiance, drinks, and food. We go to Villon for Thanksgiving every year and I believe the menus are crafted by the same chef (Mr Fox IIRC). We recognized our server from our last dinner at Villon as well who is friendly. The decor and views are great, and there is a lively but not party-like vibe. I do think the gas level on the fire pits are a little high as the flames travel father out of the pit radius than I (or my long haired fiancee) would prefer. That would not stop us from going again. read more
