    Busy tonight

This place is always great and oddly enough on a Sunday in downtown post World Cup final the whole downtown seems to be closed. Sat at the bar. Live music with a one man band that played Hispanic guitar music with a few odd ones like Pink Floyd. Great chips and roasted salsa. Did the surf and turf enchiladas "Banderas" style. Steak, shrimp, and lobster in three sauces. All three enchiladas were really stuffed with their fillings. The best was shrimp followed by lobster then the steak. Needless to say the service was excellent. The food was outstanding. Also this place is dog friendly. Who would have thought.

During a Mother's Day spa trip for my wife, I wanted to include a nice dinner at a well known steakhouse! I tried to make reservations at another restaurant beforehand known for their prime rib, but they were booked full. So I reserved this place. Upon our arrival we entered the door on the right hand side of the building. We told them the name our reservation was under and they said it was for the restaurant next door on the left side of the building. It was for the more upscale restaurant as mentioned by the host. They have two restaurants by the same name that sit opposite of each other. I hear their counterpart is just as good. We entered the building from the left and told the host the name the reservation was under. The host wasn't as attentive as she should have been. She hardly even looked as us. We were standing there and she seemed to be busy with something else. No ' it'll be just a few minutes', nothing. She was talking with the other ladies. Finally we were seated. Our server was very nice. We decided on two steak dinners. My wife had the 8oz filet and I got the rib-eye both med-rare. Our steaks look good when we received it. But my steak was served rare! It was chewy and fatty. I chewed for days just to get a single piece down. My wife steak was overcooked to medium. There's nothing worse than an overcooked filet mignon! We don't like sending food back for obvious reasons. We've heard too many horror stories, not to mention I use to work in the food industry. As I mentioned, our server was very nice and attentive as well! She constantly checked on us and my tip reflected that! For a $170.00 bill, our meal was mediocre at best. Thanks for ending my wife's Mother's Day on a sour note!

Update: I figured it was time for an update since my last review was 10 years ago! This restaurant is a regular for us! We are here 4-5 times a year. We always take advantage of the Christmas in July gift card sale, and use these throughout the year. Last night we went for the Sonoran Restaurant week menu, a tamale and chorizo stuffed chicken, a blue cheese, chorizo wedge salad, and a mantaquilla cake - all absolutely fantastic! It was something different, I had a prickly pear margarita with it and of course the complimentary chips and salsa!

FOOD - Complimentary chips and salsa 4/5 - Surf & Turf Enchiladas Banderas: lobster, shrimp, and steak in 3 different sauces, topped with cheese and avocado slices. All 3 were good, my favorite was the shrimp. It came with a side of rice and beans which were good. 4/5 - Abuela's Chocolate Lava Cake: moist and rich but not very lava-y. Came with a side of vanilla ice cream. Topped with chocolate syrup and raspberry sauce. 4/5 SERVICE: The service was soooo good. Our server was amazing. She was welcoming and attentive. They comped our dessert because it was our anniversary! FINAL THOUGHTS: I would definitely come back. The food was good and generous.

My friends and I decided to go to Charro steak for dinner. Since we didn't not have a reservation, they seated us in Del Rey side, which serve same exact food. The ambience was very nice and felt cozy. We ordered Caesar salad, lobster queso fundido and halibut. Lobster queso was to die for! It was so delicious I could have easy eaten another one. I had a high expectation for their Caesar salad but it was just okay. Halibut was really delicious but I wish the temperature was hotter. It's too bad coz the flavor was excellent but I just like my food very hot. Our server was friendly and I loved that she gave us very honest opinion on their menu items.

We returned two weeks later, this time to the Charro side, to celebrate a small milestone. Griffin - biochemistry student and rockstar waiter - was an absolute delight. When we were struggling to choose a bottle to enjoy on this "wine Wednesday" he unhesitatingly offered to give us small tasters of each. We settled on a fine Cabernet (Iron & Sand) to accompany our bold steaks. Over the next unhurried two hours he balanced attentive service with affable gravitas as we compared notes over dry-aging and searing. After knocking back only 2/3 of our bottle, Griffin deftly re-corked our Cab to take home. The acoustic guitarist was a warm surprise and never too loud to impede conversation. This venue will be on heavy rotation.

My brother and I were in town for my cousin's wedding. We decided to stop by here after the wedding. We sat at the bar and had a great time! We ordered a ribeye, medium rare. We decided to split it since we just left a wedding that served food. Anyway, we split it and we both thoroughly enjoyed it! Perfectly seasoned and cooked beautifully! The drinks were good. Glad we stopped by for a late snack! Sorry, I forgot to take pics of our food. ‍

Such a fun place for sure. Came for a small team dinner. The flaming dinner is the flame of chilies. Delicious stuff and entertaining too. I shared a 18oz steak with my coworker. Rare to medium. Simple little flavor but pure joy of this perfect grilled beef. Side dish's are great too. Other than the peppers on fire, the serious Brussels sprouts were great too. Services were wonderful for us. Very nice lobby for the business dinner. Will come back again.

This was my second time visiting this downtown Tucson restaurant. The first time we came, everything was really good, which is why we decided to return for Valentine's Day and reserve for their special Valentine's menu. We were the last reservation of the evening (which I made about a week in advance). After being seated, we were told that the Valentine's menu was no longer available because they had run out of the carne asada plate and several other featured items. That was disappointing, especially since the special menu had been advertised and reservations were required. It made me feel like there should have been enough prepared for the number of bookings that night. We adjusted and ordered from the regular menu. My friend and I shared a steak with potatoes on the side, and our husbands ordered the surf and turf enchiladas. They really enjoyed their dishes and said everything was flavorful and well prepared. Drinks were definitely a highlight. I ordered a sangria and it was really good, and my friend had a mezcal margarita that was also excellent. Overall, the cocktails were very well done. The manager was very attentive and apologized multiple times for the Valentine's menu situation, which we appreciated. Our server was kind and doing her best on what was clearly a very busy evening. The only other issue was timing. My friend and I ordered a Caesar salad to share (they prepare it table-side, which is a really cool touch), but it didn't arrive until after we had finished our steak. Because of the delay, they ended up comping the salad, which we appreciated. This place is great for a special occasion, dressing up, going downtown before or after clubbing, or celebrating something. It definitely feels more like a date-night or couple's environment rather than a family-style restaurant although that might just be because I've only gone at night on the weekend.

Prime rib, filet mignon, side of corn and beans.

AMAZING, AMAZING FOOD!!!! We made reservations, so the wait was under five minutes. We chose to sit outside; the tables were covered with a nice, black fabric. There were no candles or table decorations/candles to set the ambience that were offered at the inside tables. I ordered the jumbo shrimp addition to my steak, but our waiter forgot to submit the order (we were not charged). I'm super disappointed that the side of shrimp was forgotten, but that gives me a reason to try it next time! Service was quick, and the waiter checked in at just the right times (not excessively to be annoying). This is hands down the best red beef we've had in Tucson; the food justifies the prices. Ordered: prime rib (cooked medium-rare), filet mignon (cooked med-well) with a side of charred/roasted corn. The prime rib came with tortillas, and our meal was served with a side of pinto beans.

I brought my husband here for his birthday dinner. I enjoyed the fusion of Mexican style with a steakhouse. The inside decor was nice. The food was excellent. The service was beyond amazing. We really enjoyed our dinner here!

Rustic feel and good crowd post graduation on a May afternoon. Staff was lively and diligently moving to serve. The little meatballs, chorizo and mushrooms hit the spot. I love a place where everyone has a "feel good" mood.

This place is now on my list of must eat at restaurants for my annual trips to Tucson. I usually get my Tucson steak fix at the very casual and rustic Daisy Mae's on the west side but after seeing Charro Steak and Del Rey listed as a top restaurant in the US for filet mignon, I had to give them a try. I was not disappointed. The filet was prepared perfectly blue/rare as I had requested. There was a wonderfully flavorful seared crust on the outside and the inside of the steak was tender and juicy. The added side of 4 mesquite grilled jumbo shrimp elevated the entire dish and complimented the filet perfectly! My friend ordered the 22 day aged prime rib. He's a huge fan of prime rib and absolutely loved it! He's from Las Vegas and has had his share of prime rib out there at the resorts and casinos and he swears that the prime rib at Charro is near the top of the list for him. Like I mentioned earlier, this is now a go to spot when I plan on returning to Tucson for my annual weekend visit. I'll still have a steak dinner at Daisy Mae's, which is now a tradition for me, but a dinner at Charro Del Rey is also happening, either by hook or crook.

    Happy hours in weekends?

No unfortunately but it's a relatively new practice that may not be utilized this summer. Check before you go

Is this place associated with the EL Charro restaurants in Tucson?

Yes. And the new Charro del Rey that will be opening in January.

What is the parking situation at Charro Steak?

Being a central downtown restaurant, we do not have our own parking lot. There is meter parking around the building on Broadway and 5th Ave. The meters are free after 5pm. There are also multiple parking garages downtown that are a short walk away.

Nestled a bit further down from Cobra Arcade at the front corner of the street it's on, just walk a bit further and you'll find CRUDA. Not a huge place, maybe about 8 or so actual tables, it's a quaint little spot that's surrounded by many other places that are a bit larger but not necessarily better since the other spots are just so crowded particularly at night. If you want a nicer spot to kick back and unwind, you definitely want to try out this spot first. The night we were there they had live music playing too, and since he spot is smaller but had decently taller ceiling, the sounds and acoustics in there actually wasn't bad. Nice to have someone jamming while you have a bite and a drink. The drinks here were sort of hit or miss for me. The drink I got wasn't bad, the drink my friend got was not good. A couple of drinks others got were also hit or miss. I think the cocktails here are just mediocre. The shots here were a bit pricey, but beggars can't be choosers perhaps. Food here was pretty good. Personal favorite, especially for the drinking crowd, that calamari basket was amazing. Came out piping hot and oh so tasty and perfectly fried. Compared to that hot mess of a fried calamari I had at JA Curry Ramen before, this was leaps and bounds ahead. Just a nice spot to be in if you're looking for more lowkey spots here, and one that isn't awful just because it's quieter for, different reasons. Would recommend.

Unfortunately, once we got home, we noticed the Camarón Culichi wasn't quite up to the standard we've come to expect from Mariscos Chihuahua. I wish they would incorporate a mocktail menu or better NA options. The appetizer we had was calamari which was decent- my husband wasn't a fan of the breading texture it has a lumpiness to it maybe like a crushed cornflake feel. Not our favorite but overall it was cooked great not overdone. Love the roasted lemon on the side. I had the short rib ravioli which the ravioli itself was good. The sauce was interesting it had a sweetness to it that I wasn't a fan of. I've had short rib ravioli at wildflower which they also did a white sauce which I preferred due to it being savory. I can tell it was a wine based sauce which had a nice depth of flavor but the sweetness really killed it for me. My husband had the baked ravioli which was a lasagna style which was great! Robust sauce and large portion. If you're in Tucson the sauce seems very similar to Nate's. We did get a free cheesecake for our anniversary which was very nice, my husband loved this and he's super picky about cheesecake. Overall not bad- I think I'd maybe come to try some other dishes but service felt very slow, I wasn't blown away with anything and it was very pricey, mocktail options definitely lacked if you're sober.
