This place is always great and oddly enough on a Sunday in downtown post World Cup final the whole downtown seems to be closed. Sat at the bar. Live music with a one man band that played Hispanic guitar music with a few odd ones like Pink Floyd. Great chips and roasted salsa. Did the surf and turf enchiladas "Banderas" style. Steak, shrimp, and lobster in three sauces. All three enchiladas were really stuffed with their fillings. The best was shrimp followed by lobster then the steak. During a Mother's Day spa trip for my wife, I wanted to include a nice dinner at a well known steakhouse! I tried to make reservations at another restaurant beforehand known for their prime rib, but they were booked full. So I reserved this place. Upon our arrival we entered the door on the right hand side of the building. We told them the name our reservation was under and they said it was for the restaurant next door on the left side of the building. It was for the more upscale restaurant as mentioned by the host. They have two restaurants by the same name that sit opposite of each other. I hear their counterpart is just as good. We entered the building from the left and told the host the name the reservation was under. The host wasn't as attentive as she should have been. She hardly even looked as us. We were standing there and she seemed to be busy with something else. No ' it'll be just a few minutes', nothing. She was talking with the other ladies. Finally we were seated. Our server was very nice. We decided on two steak dinners. My wife had the 8oz filet and I got the rib-eye both med-rare. Our steaks look good when we received it. But my steak was served rare! It was chewy and fatty. I chewed for days just to get a single piece down. My wife steak was overcooked to medium. There's nothing worse than an overcooked filet mignon! We don't like sending food back for obvious reasons. We've heard too many horror stories, not to mention I use to work in the food industry. As I mentioned, our server was very nice and attentive as well! She constantly checked on us and my tip reflected that! For a $170.00 bill, our meal was mediocre at best. Update: I figured it was time for an update since my last review was 10 years ago! This restaurant is a regular for us! We are here 4-5 times a year. We always take advantage of the Christmas in July gift card sale, and use these throughout the year. Last night we went for the Sonoran Restaurant week menu, a tamale and chorizo stuffed chicken, a blue cheese, chorizo wedge salad, and a mantaquilla cake - all absolutely fantastic! My friends and I decided to go to Charro steak for dinner. Since we didn't not have a reservation, they seated us in Del Rey side, which serve same exact food. The ambience was very nice and felt cozy. We ordered Caesar salad, lobster queso fundido and halibut. Lobster queso was to die for! It was so delicious I could have easy eaten another one. I had a high expectation for their Caesar salad but it was just okay. Halibut was really delicious but I wish the temperature was hotter. We returned two weeks later, this time to the Charro side, to celebrate a small milestone. Griffin - biochemistry student and rockstar waiter - was an absolute delight. When we were struggling to choose a bottle to enjoy on this "wine Wednesday" he unhesitatingly offered to give us small tasters of each. We settled on a fine Cabernet (Iron & Sand) to accompany our bold steaks. Over the next unhurried two hours he balanced attentive service with affable gravitas as we compared notes over dry-aging and searing. After knocking back only 2/3 of our bottle, Griffin deftly re-corked our Cab to take home. The acoustic guitarist was a warm surprise and never too loud to impede conversation. This was my second time visiting this downtown Tucson restaurant. The first time we came, everything was really good, which is why we decided to return for Valentine's Day and reserve for their special Valentine's menu. We were the last reservation of the evening (which I made about a week in advance). After being seated, we were told that the Valentine's menu was no longer available because they had run out of the carne asada plate and several other featured items. That was disappointing, especially since the special menu had been advertised and reservations were required. It made me feel like there should have been enough prepared for the number of bookings that night. We adjusted and ordered from the regular menu. My friend and I shared a steak with potatoes on the side, and our husbands ordered the surf and turf enchiladas. They really enjoyed their dishes and said everything was flavorful and well prepared. Drinks were definitely a highlight. I ordered a sangria and it was really good, and my friend had a mezcal margarita that was also excellent. Overall, the cocktails were very well done. The manager was very attentive and apologized multiple times for the Valentine's menu situation, which we appreciated. Our server was kind and doing her best on what was clearly a very busy evening. The only other issue was timing. My friend and I ordered a Caesar salad to share (they prepare it table-side, which is a really cool touch), but it didn't arrive until after we had finished our steak. Because of the delay, they ended up comping the salad, which we appreciated. This place is great for a special occasion, dressing up, going downtown before or after clubbing, or celebrating something. I'm super disappointed that the side of shrimp was forgotten, but that gives me a reason to try it next time! This place is now on my list of must eat at restaurants for my annual trips to Tucson. I usually get my Tucson steak fix at the very casual and rustic Daisy Mae's on the west side but after seeing Charro Steak and Del Rey listed as a top restaurant in the US for filet mignon, I had to give them a try. I was not disappointed. The filet was prepared perfectly blue/rare as I had requested. There was a wonderfully flavorful seared crust on the outside and the inside of the steak was tender and juicy. The added side of 4 mesquite grilled jumbo shrimp elevated the entire dish and complimented the filet perfectly! My friend ordered the 22 day aged prime rib. He's a huge fan of prime rib and absolutely loved it! He's from Las Vegas and has had his share of prime rib out there at the resorts and casinos and he swears that the prime rib at Charro is near the top of the list for him. Like I mentioned earlier, this is now a go to spot when I plan on returning to Tucson for my annual weekend visit. I'll still have a steak dinner at Daisy Mae's, which is now a tradition for me, but a dinner at Charro Del Rey is also happening, either by hook or crook. read more

This is one of our Go To Night Downtown places to eat. This evening, 2025, was the 1st Day of Steak-Mas with a highlighted Salad and Prime Rib special. I'm going to focus on the great service we received from our servers who were attentive and made sure the one concern we had was addressed. The Prime Rib, tamale and brussels were amazing and well worth it. The salad should not have been highlighted and had issues, that I'll attribute to first night issues of the special. Mainly freshness, lack of ingredients and small portion. However this was addressed quickly, the servers and manager came to apologize and offered a free dessert. The best thing of a restaurant is often not just food, but how they address problems which Charro handled excellently. We will continue to dine here and look forward to continuined amazing meals in the future. Don't forget there is a reward program. I had the 22-day Aged Grass Fed Prime Rib, cooked medium rare, and it was beautifully prepared at perfect temperature and flavor. It came with horseradish au jus and fresh flour tortillas, which was such a fun and unexpected touch from a typical starch pairing. The only downside was that my particular cut had quite a bit of connective tissue, which made it difficult to slice through in some spots which might've just been the luck of the draw, so I'd be willing to give it another shot next time. The meal also came with their family-style frijoles Charro, which were delicious, and the complimentary chips and salsa. I personally would've loved the salsa to have a little more heat, but I get that they keep it mild for most palates. I paired everything with a Si Sangria Rojo, which was fantastic, light, fruity, and perfectly balanced. The interior of the restaurant is absolutely gorgeous - stylish, warm, and inviting. And our server was wonderful: friendly, attentive, and on top of everything. I've been here a few times but it was years ago. I've never made a review. Hubby and I came on a Friday night. We made reservations and they were pretty packed. However, they have patio seating. Food: appetizers: guacamole left more to be desired. It was bland but a cute setup. I would rate it a 6/10 I had the charro burger with added bacon and fries which was good with the prickly pear bbq sauce. Pretty solid so 8/10. Charro Steak & Del Rey is a warm and rustic vibe. Decorated with exposed brick walls, wood accents and candelabra lighting, the restaurant is visually welcoming. The second sense that welcomes you is the pleasant aroma, which combines with the visual to tell you that you made a good choice for your meal. The chips and salsa are supreme. The salsa is made from vegetables roasted in beef tallow for a deep and smoky flavor that is excellent. The menu is not your standard appetizer choices. They offer Mexican inspired seafood and vegetable appetizers in addition to oysters. For the main course a half dozen cuts of steak are offered with an about ten fish dishes offered. Excellent planning and curation have been placed into this menu. We had the carne asada, a rainbow trout special and a New York strip steak. We also ordered a side dish of Brussels sprouts. Everything was overall delicious. Now for the one negative. And this pains me because I cannot give a five star review because of this one (minor) problem. The dishes were salted inconsistently. The Brussels had a very salty top layer as if the dish wasn't seasoned as it was prepared but more as if the kitchen staff salted it after it had been plated. Same for the rainbow trout (and it may have been limited to the vegetable topping but not sure). I genuinely wanted to ignore this minor salt issue but it was overwhelming in certain bites. Overall I highly recommend Charro Steak & del Rey. I will come back at some point to hopefully upgrade my review to five stars because I think this place deserves it. read more

I have for come here for awhile and continue to enjoy coming here. The food is usually good however the service and food of late has been inconsistent. Management disinterested etc. and non-responsive when there was a problem. Due to the non-responsiveness we have not come as often. However today was a total different story. Food was excellent. The only thing I would add is with the filet, it does crave a sauce. While perfectly cooked, nicely charred with the wood, a sauce would be nice. The service was the best I have seen ever at this establishment. There was no hesitation to take care of the customers and respond when there might be a problem. I have been torn on writing this review, as I genuinely love this restaurant! We've always had a great experience and have loved the food items, but this visit, which was the day before Father's Day, was different. Our server was good, so nothing wrong with this. It lacked the flavor and the juiciness he has grown accustomed to from their steaks. My daughter's boyfriend had the Carne Asada. None of us tried his dish, but he told my daughter later (he didn't want to be rude to us), that it was not good. He was a bit disappointed. My daughter had the "Surf & Turf" Enchiladas Banderas, a dish she also has had before. The surf part (lobster and shrimp) were good, but the turf (steak) she said tasted sour. I don't eat beef, so I didn't try it, but my husband and her boyfriend both tried it and they said it did not taste right, and told her to stop eating it. So basically, all meals that included beef did not provide the great excitement and expectation we usually have with this restaurant. We also ordered the Serious Brussels and the Esquites con Crema as family style side dishes. These were good! You do get ranch style beans with all steak cuts, as well as a tortilla choice. The chicken also has a choice of tortilla. Other than the food, there was live music. The musician/guitarist, was really good! He sat right on the other side of the wall from us, and we really enjoyed his rendition of popular songs. Definitely tipped him on our way out as he was quite talented. My husband always says if he is going to pay for a good steak, it has to be really good for it to be worth it. This time around it wasn't, and that's too bad! I've been to Charro Steak twice now, and the second visit completely changed my perspective. On my first visit, I ordered the T-bone. It was good, but not something I'd go out of my way for. This time, I gave it another shot and ordered the carne asada--and that's the move. It's a skirt steak, perfectly cooked, full of flavor, and easily the standout item on the menu. I paired it with a 10 oz grilled lobster tail, and it exceeded expectations. Cooked over a mesquite grill, it takes on a subtle smoky flavor that enhances the natural sweetness of the lobster and really sets it apart. I spend a lot of time on the Massachusetts coast and have had plenty of lobster--this preparation stands out. The charred Brussels sprouts with white corn are also worth ordering. Great texture and flavor, not just an afterthought side. Even the basics were done right--warm, crisp chips and a flavorful salsa (not spicy, but well-balanced). The space itself is rustic and fun, with a great atmosphere. I sat at the bar and received five-star service from Derek --attentive, friendly, and dialed in the entire time. Way over-rated. The aged ribeye was not really aged. And they did not season it at all. I make a better steak at home. The brussels sprouts were outstanding but they served them on a piece of wood that never gets cleaned properly. Put a piece of wood in hot, soapy water and it splits and cracks. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Tucson! We were celebrating a birthday this time around so we went all out! We ordered the tableside guacamole which is always a hit, and this time was no exception. Then we got El Tower del Rey and boy were we feeling like royalty! Since we were there to celebrate I was able to sneakily ask our server if there was a surprise dessert that could be brought out for the birthday guest. She took care of everything and brought out the delicious and very special Champagne Fried Strawberries, which were the perfect sweet ending to the delicious meal. They were also able to accommodate an avoiding of dairy and eggs when asked to do so, and since there were multiple preferences at the table they made sure to include things like cheeses or creams and butters on the side so that no one had to miss out while those who were abstaining could still delight in the meal fully. So not only was the food top-notch as always, the service was a perfect match! The ambiance is further enhanced by the live music they often have playing by different musicians. On this particular evening there was a guitar player. One of the other things I love about this place is their focus on grass-fed beef and sustainable seafood. I had two El Chingon oysters, one Wildcat oyster, and a Surf & Turf Enchiladas Banderas. The enchilada plate had three enchiladas, one each with steak, lobster and shrimp filling. They gave my friend a free dessert because it was his birthday. I think everyone was happy with their food as well as the service and ambiance. This is a special-occasion place for most people--dinner for six came to $289.45 including tax and 20% tip, which they add to the bill for groups of six or more. Easiest 5 stars in a while. Everything here is delicious. No wonder it's 100+ years old. To start, we had table side guacamole made by the owner. It was fresh and flavorful. We had also ordered a cornbread to share, but it must not have been rung up by our waitress, and came out later. However, the owner noted this, and informed us immediately it would be on the house. Very classy. For my main, I'm not big on steak, so I had the half chicken. It was so well seasoned and juicy; I thoroughly enjoyed it. For dessert, our table split a lava cake and the fried strawberries--both of which were fantastic. Our waitress was super sweet as well, and stopped by countless times to offer refills and check in.
