Not sure how this place got four stars. But I was not impressed. Went here for lunch. They had a good selection of items to choose from their lunch menu. Most items were under $8. I ordered general chicken and my sister got cashew chicken. She chose fried rice and I chose chow mien as my side. It came with soup of the day (hot and sour) and a fried cheese wonton. My sister and I tasted each others food. It was the exact same flavor, same sauce. It wasn't bad, but we ordered two different things. The only difference was she had cashews on top and mine had peanuts. The food seemed to be heated in the microwave because some parts were hot and others cold in the fried rice. The place is a but dingy. The blinds in the window were very dirty. This place needs a good deep cleaning. I was really hoping to find a good Chinese place near me. I have been ordering from this restaurant for about four months now. With each order and delivery I have become a huge fan. All of the different foods I have ordered have been so delicious and fresh I have enjoyed each one very much. Their serving amounts for the great prices last for many meals or would feed a family of four leaving them feeling full. Their delivery service is excellent and very quick. The food is very warm and always comes with sauces and fortune cookies freshly packed in a clear bag. Their delivery people are very friendly and patient and I have dealt with Shawn on a number of times and enjoyed his especially friendly manner and smiles. I had a craving for some Chinese food and so I ordered some of my "go-to" dishes; an order of pot stickers, BBQ pork fried rice and beef with broccoli. The pot stickers and the fried rice were "ok". They would have been great if they were a little more flavorful. The beef with broccoli was AWESOME though. It had a hint of garlic in the sauce which made it really, really good. I would definitely recommend this place for the price. It was a really good deal. I also plan to go here again and try some more of their specialty dishes to taste more of what they're good at. However they didn't offer "assorted vegetables" for dinner but the employee said she would still do it for me which i thought was nice. However, i later ended up finding over 6 pieces of chicken in my meal. I have been vegetarian for over 5 years and u was really upset. First time coming here & it will be my last. I stopped by Chef Bo to order food to-go. Food: I ordered two dinner combo special for $8.99/each. One was Mangolian Beef (extra spicy) and the other was Szechuan Beef (extra spicy) with half fried rice and half chow mein (side note: they charged me $0.50 to have it half rice and half noodles). So, I get home and the Mongolian and Szechuan Beefs were all soupy that it got all over the rice (in one box) and the chow mein (in the other box). On top of that, they never gave me half fried rice and half chow mein. It was all chow mein. I was a bit upset because they charge me for something (I know it's only 50 cents but still!) that they didn't even do. So, I take a bite of my food and it was gross. It had no flavor. The noodles was super soft and was not fresh. AND...it wasn't even spicy. Super annoyed that I spent money on food that I didn't even eat. Never again. read more

Ooph! I think not!! I suddenly got a craving for Chinese food on Friday night, and loved the idea of having delivery. I had never gotten Chef Bo before, but they were close and did delivers to my location. It began to go downhill when the waitress could not understand my street location. Even though I spelt it out slowly 5 times, which at a certain point becomes crazy. I'm not sure if the delivery driver got loss, but it took them nearly an hour to deliver our food even though we were only 10 minutes away. We got orange chicken, vegetable fried rice and honey walnut shrimp, which was almost 30 dollars. I understand with delivery you are paying more, but that seemed on the high end. In the end, the price was not worth the food at all. The orange chicken seemed very fatty and had very little orange flavor. This was surprising since there was giant orange rinds still coated to the orange chicken. The orange chicken was mostly sticky and flavorless and extremely chewy! Ew! The honey walnut shrimp was just as bad. It was covered in a thick layer of sauce that tasted like day old mayo. It was slimy and even though I love shrimp, I could not suffer through eating it. The fried rice was just OK. Pretty salty, but the best out of the three. But really how can you mess up rice and veggies? In the future I'll make the effort to drive to better and cheaper Chinese restaurant. read more

Chef Bo isn't exactly high-end, but they do serve Chinese dishes with a bit of bite here. You can get your gloppy chunks o' chicken in sauce here, for sure. But you can also get food with a bit more authenticity and a bit more soul if you ask real nicely and know what to order. (And are willing to explain yourself in mind numbing detail to the friendly guy taking down what you want.) The menu is more interesting then most quick takie-outie Chinese joints. There's Singapore Noodles, ma po tofu, variants on Chinese long beans and greens, and some other interesting items that stretch the margins of the "deep fried lemon chicken" standard. Begin your meal with some of the Chinese pickles positioned in the cooler next to the drink fountain - they're crispy, refreshing, and a little bit spicy. Our favorite item here is the basil chicken, which came in a hot pot before new ownership took over. We asked for it both none-deep fried and served in a hotpot like they used before - which was nice, although the rich, dark sauce achieved near molten levels of heat. But we asked for it!. The dark meat chicken took on a herby, molasses flavor from the basil sauce, and combined with onions, it's pretty delicious indeed. Just make sure to restrain yourself and hold back the chopsticks until the heat level goes down - third degree burns on the tongue can really cramp your style. We also tried the un-fried garlic fish with bamboo shoots and mushrooms. This was okay - the accompanying vegetables were prepared well, but I found the sauce a little too sweet and gloppy for my personal taste. The worst part was the fish. It was obviously prefrozen and had that gross crumbly texture that instantly identifies low grade flash frozen cod. Yech. I avoided the fish and picked out the crunchy and sweet mushrooms and bamboo shoots instead. Finally, we had the eggplant in garlic sauce, which was very nice indeed. It came with onions and black long mushrooms, cooked in an incendiary hot pot. The eggplant was falling apart and full of carbohydrate laden, rich goodness. The sauce was, again, a little too sweet, but the addition of plenty of muscular chili peppers lifted it out of insipid land and made it something to savor. Definitely recommended, especially if you're a vegetarian who wants something with more kick to it then yet another plate of arugula. I've tried quite a few other things here before. The vegetarian chow mein is tasty and comes with a tremendous variety of (probably not so fresh) vegetables, and the serving size is monstorous. Prepare for leftovers. The chicken with green beans is bland and not so good, and it's fairly obvious the green beans were prefrozen - avoid. The scallion fried bread is tasty, but greasy as hell - de rigeur for that particular menu, item really. Chef Bo doesn't exactly have any ambience, other then some hip back in the 80's paintings and suspiciously moody lighting. Still, service is reliably fast and the staff obviously wants to please you, which is always good. Chef Bo is definitely a good choice if you want quick and cheap Chinese food in the area that doesn't fall into the "amorphous glop" category. Just don't order any fish. read more

Is one of the local places to go for Chinese food. Food quality is hit or miss depending on the day of the week. I think they have different chefs, I called once to get the name of the chef that was working on the day that the food was good. But they didn't give me that info so my fiancé and I are using process of elimination. So far.... Mondays and Thursdays are NOT safe to order from here but Friday's are good! As a long time customer of the ever changing Chef Bo, I was eager to see what changes the new management made to the menu, the decor, and the staff. Over the years, as soon as my family enters the doors, the order is being yelled back to the chef. I was confident that nothing substantial had changed on the menu as the general decor of the restaurant had not changed that much. The walls are repainted white and they took out the awkward bar area that was always a bit of an eye sore. To do so, however, they had to add more tiles and regrout the area which was not done in the most methodical manner. The new management also took out the old soda fountain and the shelf that ran along the backside of the restaurant that has opened up the space substantially. Changes: 1) Decor: Everything has a new clean white paint job. The bathrooms have been cleaned out and they added accent decor and potpourri which is a huge step up from its previous state. The dining area has a cleaner flow to it and the space is much more open. 2) Staff: The old staff has been changed out to a brand new staff that are still getting their sea legs. There was confusion over the menus, water, ordering, and the wait staff would wander out in the dining room, sit down in an empty table and text then remember that there were customers out there. 3) Menu: The menu has been drastically reduced. Before, the menu was roughly 4 pages but it has been cut down to 2. My favorite dish (of any Asian restaurant, period) has been taken off the menu. That was definitely difficult to hear as I was definitely prone to drive the 20 mins to Chef Bo just to get an order of teriyaki tofu over noodles. Also, the soda fountain has been removed and they are using cans of soda as an FYI because I would have stuck with the water if I had know I was paying for a can rather than a refillable soda. Review: I asked if they kept the tofu over noodles item but she said that everything comes over rice. So I opted for the sesame tofu over steamed rice and we split the veggie spring rolls. My husband got the veggie chow mein and my mom and her boyfriend split hot oil wontons, General Tao's chicken, and pork chow mein. The spring rolls and wontons came out really quickly and we did notice that they have switched the company that they get both the wontons and the spring rolls from. The spring rolls are a bit more substantive but the wonton portion size is significantly smaller. I got the tofu first, then after five minutes the pork chow mein came to the table and then five minutes later, the veggie chow mein arrived. We decided to just dig in while it was hot so everyone's dinner was staggered. The way they prepare the tofu is the same and the sesame sauce that they use doesn't really taste like sesame as it has a slight kick to it (but I didn't mind that). One huge problem with the dish was that it was soaked in sauce. The ample serving of rice that was underneath the tofu was completely saturated with the sauce so much so that I was only able to salvage 2 tablespoons of edible rice from the entire plate. My mom and her boyfriend both seemed to like their dishes but I did notice that the chow mein was completely scraped clean while the chicken was abandoned. My husband loved the chow mein and said that it was an improvement to the previous version of the dish. He was a huge fan of his dish but I am still upset that they 86d my favorite dish of all time. In terms of service, we walked in and were seated but then were never given menus and were just sitting at the table. Another waiter dropped off the menus and shortly thereafter dropped off chilled waters (which were heaven after today's 102 temp). They came around after a while and got our orders but she seemed a bit unsure of her menu and so the process took a bit longer than it normally would. I chalk it up to first week jitters but they need to be on top of it. We also had to ask multiple times to get hot peppers for the dish and my mom who was especially parched was left high and dry a couple times so she would siphon off some of our waters. This would normally be somewhat acceptable but we were one of two tables in the restaurant and the second table had just been seated while we were finishing our meal. We got the check and were pleasantly surprised to get a freshly cut orange and fortune cookies with the check- nice touch. It seriously pains me to cut down the previous review but until the new staff finds its bearing, I can't give them the rating that they had before. I will definitely be going there again and will do another review after that visit but for right now it's only a 3/5. read more

A few things I really enjoyed right off the bat was the amount of options they give you as far as dinner combos, family plates, and individual entrees. It consisted of: War won ton soup, 2 egg rolls, 2 fried prawns, Szechuan chicken, lemon chicken ( we substituted for orange chicken)and an option for fried rice or chow mein. I love that they were willing to make the substitution for orange chicken because in previous experiences with Chinese food places they are usually unwilling to do subs. In addition to the food being really good and flavorful, they also offer huge portion sizes so it was nice to feel like I was getting great bang for my buck! I grew up in a restaurant and my family has operated several restaurants for over 30+ years. My friends hate going to Chinese restaurants with me because I'll pick the place apart. This is actually one of the few Chinese restaurants that I will frequent. The true test of any Asian restaurant is how clean the restrooms are. The whole place is well kept and there aren't any sticky menu's. The service is very personable, fast and friendly. The food is very fresh and on point. I haven't had a single thing that I didn't like here. Some of the more common dishes are obviously Americanized but you have to cater to your audience. The Egg Foo Young gravy is to die for! It's not the usual instant brown gravy you get at most places. They make the sauce fresh to order and I hate to admit it but it's better than my Dad's(sorry Dad...). Every once in a while I like to venture over to this place and get one of their lunch tray specials. It comes with soup, spring roll, rice and vegetable chow mein and it's only about $6. I've tried quite a few of their dishes and they have all been decent. I usually just get the sweet and sour chicken or the teriyaki chicken. Their soups are really good also. Their fried rice isn't really flavorful but there is something about it that I love. It's always nice and fluffy and kinda silky (maybe it's actually just oily but I like it!). My favorite thing about this place is the help yourself kim chee. I remember growing up when my Dad would open his jar of kim chee it would make the house smell like road kill. Little did I know then how spicy and good this fermented stuff was! If you go there enough (like I do) you can even get a free meal after 10 (?) visits! It's isn't the BEST chinese cuisine but it's definitely good and inexpensive. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Update: I am removing a star. I have been here twice since my last review and they have made some changes. I ordered take-out last night. It was horrible. I realize that you cannot get any decent Chinese food in Sacramento but this ranked below the standard bad fare. The chow main used the overly thick noodles, too many onions and yet, no flavor at all. The fried rice was similar. I don't order dishes like noodles and fried rice if I have to lay on the soy sauce real thick to give it any flavor at all. The sweet and sour pork was nasty. I decided to come here on a whim because I remember one of my nuggets asked for noodles for dinner on Friday, a break from our usual pizza on Fridays..since they're having a sleepover tomorrow I figure pizza is good to feed three boys..anyway, I called in an order since I saw that they had some good reviews. (Said with heavy accent) I said yes, she turned around and put my food on the counter and then gave me my total and proceeded to start talking to someone else working there, in their language obviously. I ordered broccoli beef since my small humans like that, and they said the meat was gross, I tasted it and it had the most bizzare, gummy, yet rubbery, and almost mushy at the same time texture. I can't get over the texture to even decide what it tastes like. The chow mein is okay. I mean chow mein to Chinese food is like water is to a lake. How do u mess up a staple? The flavor was blan, the noodles were semi mushy. Ugh! The sweet n sour chicken was actually good though. My kids didn't even eat much of the food. In fact they asked me to make something. So much for me thinking I got it of cooking for the night!! If you want cheap Chinese? U are probably better off going elsewhere. I have paid Chef Bo many visits since I first reviewed their restaurant. I decided that the main draw is definitely the well-served $5.50 daily special(s) for lunch. You get the featured entree, (fried)rice/chow mein, a fried wonton, and fortune cookie every time. They even include a bowl of soup if you dine-in. Food and service have been great since my first visit. There is usually the same young lady at the register, and she is always nice and helpful.
