Ordered house fried rice, house chow mein, salt and pepper calamari and kung pao chicken. The rice came first, it smelled soooo good and it was beautiful. Great taste, then the calamari. WOW, light tempura with lightly cooked jalapeno, green and white onions. Holy cripes was it good. Then the chow mein. large flower noodles and what color. The most aromatic and wonderful taste. Tender meats with no MSG. The kung pao was last. Another colorful and excellent tasting dish with only mild heat. We eat Chinese several times a month. This was a total surprise for us. First the" vegetable fried rice " had every kind of meat on the menu , greasy , and difficult to distinguish Exactly what kind of meat you were going to eat... The Sweet Sour Pork was overcooked and so dry you couldn't eat it ... the outer coating was hard and chewy...( like over microwaved ) definitely not freshly cooked. I would not recommend this restaurant at the prices they advertise. I'll break it down for you. 1) They advertise a coupon for a certain dollar amount spent. The catch is, it's not what you spend. It's the subtotal, so after you spent...or spent nearly $100 worth of food, I didn't qualify because it didn't include the $30+ fees, taxes and tip that was added on. After I complained that the online menu does not specify this process and that I was basically being scammed, they offered to throw in a free entree/side. 2) The food was too garlicky. Way too much garlic with everything. Way too much cabbage in the egg rolls, vegetable rolls, and wong tong soup. The food made my stomach turn about 15 minutes into the meal. Bottom line. It's not worth the value. Panda Express has better quality at better prices to be honest. Chef Chen is not a place I would recommend or frequent a second time. read more

They've gone through ~3 owners recently (in the last 5ish years). Back in 2011/2012, the owners (who now own Ayame Sushi in Vacaville) were on top of things. They remodeled the restaurant from the original ownership and turned things around from a quality standpoint. They sold the restaurant to owners in ~2015 (I was in college, so the timelines are a bit off, sorry). Those owners were really overwhelmed, quality of food stayed similar early on, and then started getting worse when they lost a chef. They also had much worse wait-times. They sold the restaurant to owners in 2017, who owned the restaurant for under a year, and then they sold to current owners. The point in explaining all of that (above) is to say that the good reviews from before aren't true of current situations. It's also to explain why they have a new business sign over their entrance, despite being here for years and years. My family ordered our favorites: chicken wings, fried fish, and soup. The portions are tiny. We got MAYBE 6 wings?? Not worth the price at all. The soup was goopy and just didn't taste how we thought it would at all. This place is probably my favorite Chinese in town. I believe they're under new ownership, but the dishes taste fairly similar if not better. I've tried a few different dishes, all of them have been great. They have a special dinner for one which started at $9.25. You pick an entree and pork fried rice, and I think you can upgrade to chow mien for a buck. Service is very friendly, and the serving size is very very large. If you can finish this in one sitting, you need to be very hungry. Also it depends on what you get I suppose. My review is based on the dishes I usually order at other Chinese restaurants. Which includes: Honey walnut prawns were good and tasty. I loved that it was crispy and the flavoring was just right. I would suggest to keep the sauce on the shrimp and not on the lettuce garnishing. The sweet and sour pork was well presented but the sauce wasn't as flavorful as I'd prefer. I also order the Hong Kong style chow mein with crispy noodles that was good. It was on the salty side and I was use to having a clear sauce vs a brown sauce but over all it was edible. I came here in search for a good hole in the wall Chinese restaurant. The food is decent but it didn't carry Peking spare ribs, which is my favorite dish. Also, the ambiance of the place wasn't appealing. If the food was GREAT and the ambiance was blah, I could deal with that, but this place didn't give me a reason to come back (maybe just for the honey walnut prawns). Surprised at how much it's been renovated, new booths and table. The lady, front of the house very sweet and inviting personality. As far as Chinese Buffets go, in Vacaville, there's only 2 and this is one of then and the better of the two. I'm not that big on Chinese food, but when I do, I like the buffet cause you get to sample a lot more food than you might if you were just with one other person ordering ala carte. Some buffets are better than others and this is one of the better ones. Chef Chen also does a lot of delivery and to go orders, but I just did the buffet. It's only served at lunch, but 7 days a week for just $7.50 all you can eat. The selection is smaller than the other huge buffet in town, but this is a real mom and pop restaurant, not a big chain and the food quality is the same as if you did sit down ala carte. There were maybe 14 choices of food along with 2 soups. The fried chicken wings were the best, though they only served the wing/drumstick part. Honey chicken was good as was the broccoli beef and pot stickers. These were the best buffet pot stickers I ever had. The fried rice, normally as pass on dish at buffets, was very good here with real flavor of the wok. It was easy for us to eat our $7.50's worth of food here. Service was fine, all they had to do was clear the plates and fill my water. The place was pack at lunch with almost everybody doing the buffet. It looks like a real locals place. I have never had Chef Chen's before but after checking out Yelp, Google and Grubhub reviews and pictures (yes, pictures are important) I decided that the family would agree with the options available. I made the mistake of ordering hungry and by the wide eyed looks from the kids I may have ordered excessively. I justified my actions by claiming it was also supposed to be for everyone's lunch tomorrow... so where do I start? I don't really want to own up to the amount I ordered but here it goes: -Pot Stickers: 1 each was not enough! No taste to the food, extremely salty, the chicken in the seshuan chicken dish was rubbery and tough, not really sure of what it is, the fried rice was super greasy and one of 3 egg foo young was bunt!
