They had only half of their protein options "left" when we tried to order chicken, steak, salmon...they did t have any of it. then they served an end piece of mostly fat that should not have been served, and a pasta and protein that we did not order without asking if its ok to replace. I honestly don't know where to start. I was in the area and saw that his restaurant so we decided to try it out. We came in on a Saturday night and the place was pretty much empty. They had 3-4 tables occupied but that was it. We were greeted by a server who was the only one working all the tables. He didn't even clean the table, it had a stain of oil on it and I asked to clean it and he was very unhappy saying "it is just water, ma'am, people before you just spilled a little". It took about 20-25 mins before he got around to taking our order. They were out of lamb and meatloaf pasta and it was Saturday 7pm (2 hours after the opened and it was empty). We ordered lobster bisque, I got the fish of the day (Branzino with veggies). My husband got penne pasta with beef pieces (special of the day). When soup arrived we knew it was only going to get worse from there. The soup tasted like one of those canned soups or Lipton bag soup. It had a taste of powder that stuck to the teeth, there were dried condiments swimming in it and it was just not something you expect at a restaurant. My husband's pasta arrived and the server (who is apparently is the owner's son) just casually told him that they were out of penne so instead they made it angel hair pasta and he hoped we were ok with it. You could tell that he couldn't care less about customers or the restaurant at all. It felt like he got punished by his dad for something and the punishment was to work at a restaurant. We felt we were annoying to him. The pasta tasted like noodles with ketchup. The meat was rough and chewy. My Branzino was ok. When I ordered, I asked if it was a filet or a whole fish and he told me it was a small piece of a filet. Well, it arrived like a half fish with the tail and all the fish but it was only half of a full fish. Fish was ok but the veggies were not cooked at all (carrots, green beans, cauliflower) were all hard and tasted as if they were just washed and put on the plate raw. When the check arrived, we had to guess what was what because all items listed were "food". No itemization or proper accounting. Other patrons there were asking about chef Hannes and it seemed like he was not there. Idk if that was the reason the service and the food were a disaster or whether it was a one off situation but I don't think we have it in us to try this place ever again. read more

First of all, after living in El Segundo for the past eight years, I learned that it is pronounced Chef HANNIS and not Chef HANES, as we always called it. The chef/owner is Austrian and, especially as a German speaker, it makes sense now. Second, I have been to literally every restaurant in El Segundo and Chef Hannes was the only spot I had never tried. Likely because we're usually out with our son and this is not a place I would want to bring him. He was away at a camp and so we finally pulled the trigger. With that all behind me, I will provide my feedback on the restaurant and our meal.... The place is excellent. A smaller restaurant with two rooms. A medium-sized menu with a focus on daily specials. And a large potential for a great experience, lunch or dinner. For us, this was dinner on a Thursday. I had a difficult time deciding what to order. I was torn between the schnitzel and a couple of the specials. Settled on a shrimp Alfredo special. She had a sausage pasta also from the specials menu, since they ran out of the short rib lasagna just after her order. Their wine selection was excellent. May Cab was great and reasonable. To be honest, I really don't understand why this restaurant is considered Italian, it really feels like it's broadly European that's trying to be somewhat Italian. Had dinner with a few friends and the service was slow because there was only one person in the front managing all of the tables. As a table we spilt the special Caesar salad, and it tasted almost like there was dill in the dressing. I've never had a Caesar salad that tasted like that, and I wouldn't order it again. I tried the orange roughy special, which was essentially piccata sauce, and it was decent but on the salty side. Meanwhile my partner ordered the chicken schnitzel, and while I thought it was fine, it was also very salty (and I LOVE salt). Both dishes came with a pepperoncini that really didn't seem to belong with either meal. We also tried the strudel that people recommended, but it was just okay, I have had better. All and all it was fine 2.5/3 stars worth to me. It was edible, it was okay, but nothing to come back for and expensive for what it was. read more

We had dinner at Chef Hannes a few nights ago. The food has really gone down hilling the last year. We live in town and have gone here many time before. I had the meat loaf and my wife had the Pasta seafood. My meatloaf was taste less and so small of a serving. My wife's seafood Pasta had 1 shrimp and 2 pieces of calamari on pasta. We have these dishes before and so sad to see what they are serving now. The worst. We ordered 1 glass of wine, the cost is now $15 and such a small pour and the worst wine. Been to Chef Hannes in downtown El Segundo many times...A Really excellent restaurant...quiet and wonderful food!

We came here for dinner and before coming here, I was really hoping to give the restaurant a chance (despite reading the reviews). First off, a good thing is that reservation is super easy to make. When we arrived, there were only a few patrons there so we were easily seated (we arrived much earlier). For our entrees, we ordered the Beef Short Rib (grassfed) Red Wine Coffee with garden herbs served over butternut squash. The fiance ordered a Filet mignon over medley of vegetables. I found the beef short rib to be super salty (the roof of my mouth felt very sore afterwards). The butternut squash was actually a disappointment, it was very mushy/grainy. As for my fiance's filet mignon, I didn't really like it. It was missing that soft moist bite. Service was decent, however I felt that there were missing elements in both our dinner plates. What makes the eating out experience memoriable? Only you can answer that. For me, the Gesalt of the resturant has to work. We frequently fly out of LAX and yesterday was no exception with my girlfriend flying back East on a red eye. To make travel a little more enjoyable we leave early and pick a place by LAX that is easy to get to and then to the airport. Wow - it was really easy to get to and from. And in a nice walking neighborhood. The Chef Hannes Resturant has a great vibe. The windows, the rustic walls, the old posters and original artwork just make the Chef's place just work and it's been around for 25 years. The menu is focused which I appreciate. It's like being in a little village in Spain, Italy or France where the menu reflects 4 or 5 things wonderfully prepared entres. And everything was wonderfully prepared, tastefully and creatively presented. We shared a ceasar salad with fresh warm crutons, nice dressing and fresh ground parma. I ordered the meatload ( think your Mom's with a touch of italian herbs then seared on the bottom for some crunch) on angel hair with a brilliant sauce that clung to the pasta and full of taste. My girl friend had the slow roasted lamb shank that fell off the bone. And we shared the apple strudel which was also creatively presented with added too! I had an amazing cup of coffee! I really wanted to try some of the wines listed on this huge chalkboard. Sadly, I knew I had to go back out in LA traffic. Our Denver cousins came into town and did not have to look far for a great restaurant, Chef Hannes. Our dinner and service was outstanding! We loved the appetizers and dinners. For appetizers, there was a goat cheese ball with raspberry jam, crackers, fresh vegetables, a liver pâté and rye breads. For entrees, I had the pork chop with the cabbage and veggie ball, three in our party had the schnitzel and salads, two had pasta dishes and one had a beef dish. We enjoyed the white German wine Hannes had recommended, kind of peppery and like a Sauvignon Blanc and we brought in a red varietal from Santa Ynez Winery, Trinitas which also paired well with our dishes. For deserts, most of us had the apple strudel and a pumpkin crème brûlée. The deserts are fresh and made on site and paired it with fresh coffee was a compliment to our dinner. Everything was awesome and delicious! The dining room set aside for us was very nice and we all felt like special guests. We will need to come back soon, it was a great dining experience. Our server and restaurant manager Luke was very helpful with the menu and a very polite and attentive server. He regularly checked in with us, asking about our dishes, having our water carafes full and being most helpful with our questions about menu options. Date night at Chef Hannes was fantastic! For apps we shared the spicy tomatoes with toast points and apple blue cheese salad. Both delicious! My husband, who usually dislikes greens, ate his salad... big surprise! He ordered the beef rib which he quickly demolished and had some of my lamb osso buco. Both very tender and served with mashed potatoes and cabbage. We splurged on dessert ordering crème brûlée and blueberry cobbler ala mode. The cobbler was excellent and fresh while the crème brûlée was super silky. I had an espresso cos you need a little bitter with the sweet. Another couple there for date night had the branzino which looked great and according to them was amazing. If you're in a hurry, this is not the place. It's a low-key place for thoughtful discussion after a tough week or just to catch up... all while really seeing each other. And, the server Luke is the chef's son who surprisingly has an Austrian accent despite growing up in El Segundo! Lol! read more

YELP 100 CHALLENGE 2018 - PART 2: 24/100 I can't believe it's been THREE years since my last visit! I asked a colleague what she brought for lunch. "Nothing." So I reminded her it's been 3 years since our last visit here. No objections. Soon as lunch hour hit, we were out (not to mention determined) - Chef Hannes it is. We've always gotten lucky with parking. We walked in early enough to be the first customers for lunch. We were asked to choose wherever we wanted to get seated. And not too long after, that damn addicting olive oil-garlic spread and toast made its way to our table. It was exactly as we remember it - AMAZING. I could have had just that for lunch! But noooo, I was down to try something new. Citrus garlic shrimp scampi for me and colleague's usual braised lamb linguini. What's there to say? Shrimp was seasoned and grilled to perfection. The plate was bright, the sauce was acidic, and the veggies gave a perfect balance to good flavor. I enjoyed it enough to clean the plate! Colleague barely said a word as she devoured her lunch. That's testament as to why she keeps ordering the same thing every time we make a stop here! Consistency is important! There were a few bugs/gnats flying around which kinda downed the experience a bit. Otherwise, service AND food was perfect! That garlic spread alone is enough reason to come back time and time again! Chef Hannes is a quaint Italian-driven neighborhood restaurant that has traditionally served great food and provided good service. Unfortunately, it appears that I came on an off-Saturday night with a large group where Chef Hannes couldn't be found and the sous-chef was running the kitchen to our disappointment. The restaurant was fairly full and busy with only 2 servers. Not sure what they were thinking of only having 2 servers on a Saturday night. As a result, service was slow at best and it took more time than expected to get anything from water to bread to napkins to ordering. When the food did come out in a sporadic manner, there were many miscues. I ordered the vegetable dumplings which were not dumplings by definition and flavorless even with the ponzu sauce. For an entree, I had the lamb shank which was flavorful with the rosemary chianti sauce in contrast to my starter, but overcooked. Other issues from the group included grilled chicken breast that was overcooked and dried, salty penna pasta with Italian sausage, bland chicken stew, and supposedly slow cooked pork that was overcooked and dry. Sadly, all these dishes could have been incredible if properly cooked and served. The only great dish that was served to our group was the angelhair pasta with grilled salmon. Chef Hannes has the potential of being a destination restaurant in El Segundo. Many, including myself, have had great meals here in the past. Before that can happen, though, they need to work on their consistency both in the food quality and the service provided on any given night or condition. read more

I had lunch reservations on Monday at 11:30. I made the reservation by phone, and spoke to a restaurant employee. My friend was driving in from another city, and she was excited to try this restaurant. We arrived at 11:30 and the door was closed and the lights were off inside. I peeked through the window and could not see anyone inside. We tried the door, and found it unlocked. We walked in and looked for an employee to find out what was going on, but there was nobody in the restaurant. The kitchen was certainly not prepped for lunch, all the lights were off, and it looked totally deserted. i have never experienced this situation before. When I made the reservation, I was asked for my phone number, so they could have at least called to let me know they were not serving lunch that day! Chef Hannes Restaurant is an institution in El Segundo. The eatery is on the west side of Main Street, north of Grand. Generally, you can find meter parking at this end of town. The eatery is eclectic. They have white tablecloth lined tables topped with butcher paper with European feeling décor. There is seating available inside and outside. You can make reservations but do not make them via the website because you will not be on the book - you must call. Fortunately, despite our reservation made via email not being available, we were able to be seated. We were outside of the wine storage area, which was a nice back corner of the restaurant. While the wine list is interesting, we decided instead to pay the $20 corkage fee and bring our own wine. The service was okay. I think that they may have been short staffed, because she was definitely running all over the place. The begin by bringing a bread basket with this olive oil laces pesto-potato mixture to the table. The bread tastes fresh and the dip is herbaceous and fruity. I highly recommend ordering the lentil vegetable soup ($6). I think it is always on the menu - it is housemade and perfectly seasoned. I absolutely love it. My friend ordered the salmon carpaccio ($12), and it was also quite good. The housemade salmon was topped with tangy mixed greens, crunchy red onions and briny capers - it was fresh and nicely balanced. For dinner, I ordered the "salmon on kale salad" ($23). I was a bit surprised by what arrived. First of all, I ordered my salmon rare, and this was way past rare. I set it off to the side, which the server noticed. After coming to the table for my report, she quickly replaced the fish with a properly cooked filet. Then, rather than being a kale salad, it was actually kale and brown rice with dried fruit. It was really a predominantly rice side dish that leaned pretty sweet. Fortunately, there was a peppery wasabi dressing ringing the plate that cut the sweetness. It was a good dish but not incredible. On the other hand, the branzino special was amazing. The filet was perfectly cooked - still moist and with a crunchy skin. It was served on what was called "lemon risotto" but was really lemon rice made with Arborio rice. It was served with some green beans, broccoli and roasted fennel. I was so glad that DM and I split the fish dishes, because I preferred this. The LOs split the braised short rib, which was served on butternut squash risotto with green beans, broccoli and roasted fennel. This risotto was a bit more risotto-like as it was creamy but it was certainly not al dente. Regardless it was delicious. The tender and juice meat just fell apart. It richness with the sweet risotto were a great pairing. It was nice to have the veggies for a little freshness. Our friend had the braised lamb shank, which was similarly moist and delicious. We skipped dessert in favor of a trip to the local gelateria. Overall, I definitely recommend Chef Hannes' Restaurant. While not best in class, it is a lovely, locally owned restaurant serving pretty good continental European fare with a California touch. read more

Summary: Fantastic food, great quality, good value, and friendly service. What's not to love? Did you know that Chef Hannes was once the personal chef for Arnold Schwarzenegger? It's true. He's quite seasoned, and his restaurant speaks to that skill. My wife and I visited Chef Hannes on a Friday evening at around 6pm for our first official meal at his restaurant. We opted to sit outside because it was a nice evening, but there were a handful of tables occupied inside when we arrived (the place was full by the time that we left). Our server was a very nice gentleman who helped us decide what to get after we asked some questions, and kept us well attended throughout the meal. We first ordered a glass of the sparkling brut and a glass of Chardonnay, then got the Tomatoes and Soft Mozzarella to start (which was really tasty and well balanced with various flavors and texture), the pork belly tacos (nice and toasty with solid flavors, but lacking in oomph from the supplementing salsa), and penne arrabiata with broccoli (my second or third favorite version of this dish ever tasted). This was a very fun, tasty, and enjoyable meal where we actually brought home some leftovers as well. Definitely a special restaurant in the Gundo, and we look forward to coming back for our next visit soon. read more

This New Year just keeps getting better. A co-worker selected Chef Hannes Restaurant to celebrate another co-workers birthday today. In your head you are thinking Olive Garden... never heard of this place, where is it??? Oh it must be new since I've eaten at almost every restaurant around it. Well, apparently it has been around 18 years. I'm a little upset that no one told me. The dining room is split between two rooms (they expanded at some point). Daily specials are on a board on the sidewalk and the waiter was... Chef Hannes!!! Very nice gentleman. He went over the specials, brought us bread, lightly toasted with some olive oil and parm... and this evil basil/potato/garlic spread that I could not stop eating... I could have just used a spoon... I'm not sure if it's normal, but for our party of 10 we had water, ice tea and lemonade pitchers on the table. I decided to make my own arnold palmer. Very nice. With so many good options I decided to split orders with another co-worker. I ordered the Lamb sandwhich and she ordered the Sea Bass. First the Lamb... the meat was so tender, braised in some kinda goodness. Flavorful to the max. The bread though... I will not eat bread in most cases, but this bread was heaven. Crispy outside so you get a light crunch when you bite into it, but the bread was soft, melt in your mouth yumminess. Good size as you will see in the picture, with an au jus that was liquid goodness. I could have used it as gravy. It came with an arugula/veggie salad lightly dressed that paired well. The sea bass had a lemon caper sauce. Nice filet of fish (not McD's) that had a flavor that got better with each bite. It was a branzino a believe, which I normally don't prefer, but this was great. Some green beans and carrots was include as well as a scoop of rice... The rice absorbed the sea bass sauce well and increased its flavor. What a wonderful surprise to have 2 great plates. Others in the group had the meatloaf (which they raved about), shrimp scampi (they didn't say much, too busy eating, but looked wonderful) and the gumbo (special of the day, fresh, full of goodies and spicy). No complaints across the board, full tummies and happy co-workers. This was not Olive Garden. I can't wait to come back for dinner soon and try some of the other entrees. I would like to note that service was excellent... We got our food faster than expected and they seem to have a nice selection of wine for dinner. I had the Linguini al Angnelli, which was alright. Braised lamb, tomatoes, spinach and garlic. The pasta itself was cooked al dente, while I prefer my pasta to be cooked a bit longer. The braised lamb was overcooked and lacked that juicy tenderness I've come to expect from braised meats. The spinach and tomatoes were bland. The dish as a whole seemed uninspired and overpriced ($15, tip and tax not included). Our complimentary bread with garlic spread was decent, but the bread wasn't very fresh. Besides the average meal, I thought the place was nice looking and they played nice Italian bistro hits. One thing that really annoyed me was our waiter who bumped into me numerous times while I was seated. Doubt he did it intentionally, but he should really be a bit more attentive. My coworkers took me to Chef Hannes for my birthday. It's a cute little restaurant in the heart of downtown El Segundo. The menu has several Italian dishes as well as a couple French dishes. After reading through the Yelp reviews, it seemed that the chicken toscana was the choice of many and it became my choice as well. Chef Hannes was actually the one who took our orders and he gave several recommendations. He mentioned the specials of the day and recommended the Polenta with meatballs and blue cheese. My coworker ended up getting this dish. He also suggested a special vegetarian dish for my coworker who is vegetarian. Before our entrees came out, we were given the bread with the infamous green garlic spread. At first bite, one can really taste that garlic. It's really strong in garlic flavor but pretty good. Soon after our meals came out. The polenta dish was very nice with two large meatballs on top. My other coworker who ordered a chicken sausage casserole also looked awesome. It had white bean and veggies topped with spicy sausage. The special vegetarian dish for my other coworker came in a big bowl filled with brown rice and colorful veggies. Lastly, my chicken toscana, like the other dishes, looked great. Veggies and fresh tomato were on the side and a chicken drizzled with smoked mozzarella on top of mashed potatoes was on the center. My dish was fairly good. The chicken had a lemon kick to it. The mozzarella added a nice touch to it. I liked the mashed potatoes. It was creamy, soft and practically melted in the mouth. The veggies were ok. There was some cauliflower, brocolli, a carrot and two slices of tomato. Portion wise was also fair. The chicken was big but thin. After reading previous reviews, I had expected a super big piece of chicken. I was little bit disappointed that there was no birthday treat/dessert for me especially since the chef knew it was my birthday. One of my coworkers had mentioned it up front and he had teased me if I was a teen. I think my disappointment was also due to expectations set by some reviews I read where customers got some on the house treats. Nothing for the birthday girl though. Sad face. It's a ok place with well presented food. It was also good to interact with the chef himself. It is too bad no birthday cake though. read more
