I found Chef Hannes because of Groupon. I've been here twice so far. The first time I was here, I had the roasted lamb sandwich which had lamb, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and red onion for $11.95. I was not one of the better sandwiches I've tried. And the lamb wasn't what I was expecting because the meat was similar to pulled pork but the lamb version. I don't think I will be ordering this again. The second time I was here, I ordered the brown rice and chicken gumbo which has vegetables, tomato, brown rice, and chicken for $12.95. This is a good hearty dish. The bowl it comes in is bigger than your head. And you can eat this until you're full and still have some left to take home. The chicken pieces that were in the gumbo were moist and tender. There was just enough rice in it that it went great with the soup. Perfect to eat on a cold day or even any day! I will definitely order this dish again! Both times we were here, we also got potato garlic spread with a mix of breads at our table. The first time here it was so good. Very garlic-y. Amazing. The second time, the spread wasn't as good. Or it seemed my dining companion and I remembered it being a lot better. It could have just been the day. Good service here and this restaurant gets filled up during lunch. The restaurant is big enough so that there is never a wait to get seated. But small enough that you're not forgotten. I was at work... but I decided to be a little fancy during lunch. Alcohol relaxes me if it's in moderate amount... so why not have a glass of wine! I find this cute little Italian Restaurant on main street. I grabbed myself an outside seat since it was nice outside and I called the waiter. This had NOTHING to do with my 5 stars I swear~ But he called me beautiful and took my order~ (bat eyes) Anyway, I ordered the pork belly and a glass of Chardonnay. The chilled glass of chardonnay comes out right away and I am sitting outside all relaxed forgetting that I have to go back to work. Then comes this amazing plate of this huge block of fried pork belly on top of a bed of mashed potato, grilled veggies and cauliflower with a slice of watermelon in the middle. Surprisingly the watermelon really freshened the flavor of the fatty pork that should be giving me a heart attack by the end of the meal. As much as Chef Hannes is advertised as Italian and French, their specials of the day were Chicken Curry and Chicken Gumbo. We had both. Chef Hannes know his chicks! Both were delicious. The Chicken Curry was slightly aromatic, as curries should be, and complemented with a great coconut highlight. The Gumbo was a bowl of warm spiciness filled with veggies. Along with such a great meal, I had to have an Expresso to top it off - hot and roasty with nary a hint of spice. The Apple Strudel was ok, nicely presented with a fabulous crust. Next time? My friend and I ordered the same dish - lamb with pasta, goat cheese, and olives - and were thoroughly underwhelmed by the tough, sparsely arranged meat, cafeteria-style penne, total lack of olives, monotone sauce, smudges of goat cheese, and careless plating. So much so that we tended to describe it as ' quirky' with great food. That all changed last week when we reserved a table for a dinner with out of town friends. Imagine our surprise when we showed up to find the restaurant closed. A phone call revealed that they were indeed closed. No apologies, no phone call, just "well we are closed". This place used to be my favorite restaurant in town. We'd come here at least twice a month. Food & service was great when they first opened and Chef Hannes would prepare our meals. I even had my husband's 50th birthday party there 12 years ago. After moving away in 2013, we hadn't gone back until last night. We were so disappointed Not the restaurant that it used to be. My favorite dish was the Spaghetti ala Trevi. Was so looking forward to it. They changed the recipe and added kalamata olives, feta cheese (hate both) and it had more of a tomato sauce. It was edible but not enjoyable. My husband's was the Fruti de Mare, said it was just okay. Needless to say, we won't be returning to the place when visiting El Segundo. read more

Have enjoyed many dinners at Chef Hannes, decor is lacking but we like sitting on the sidewalk. Woefully understaffed and for a place with Chef in the name you think the atmosphere would be more food centered. Every visit we have only seen a lone table waiter, not sure what is in back. On one visit early in the summer we had a server named Emily who was personable, professional, and brought a delightful spirit to the place. Maybe she was too qualified to stay. Last night we had to endure this young dolt of a waiter that has no idea what is doing or why he is there. "My bad" is a constant reply, He needs to be prompted to mention the specials, stumbles through his recital, then wanders off. I ordered the pork chops, had them before and was looking forward to enjoy the dish again. Twice he tried to bring us someone else's order and when our plate did arrive, he brought a pork tenderloin to the table with no explanation. I pointed out that it was not my order, he said, "Yeah, I know, they didn't have pork chops." I asked why he did not share that information with me, so maybe I could change my order. He looked perplexed, I asked, "what are my choices now?" He looked confused. I ate what he brought, the meat was dry and the vegetables undercooked. $28. for a plate that did not satisfy. Often when there is a mistake a waiter will take the initiative to adjust the bill or offer dessert on the house, This guy appeared clueless, completely out of his depth, unaware of any problem. Meanwhile a couple still waiting for menus and the waiters attention observed my interaction, got up and walked off, waiter was oblivious, did not ever register that they had ever been there. The terrible service overshadows everything including great food. I came here for lunch with fellow Yelper Penn T. He's raved SO much about this place and I finally came here to see what it's all about. It's a quaint place right along Main St. in El Segundo. Chef Hannes was there and he was the one actually taking our orders and serving us as well. We started off with the potato garlic spread I've heard so much about. I am confirming now that that stuff is awesome! It's served with bread but I seriously could just eat it straight from a spoon. For my main dish I ordered a grilled salmon salad that was a special for the day. At first I thought I ordered a grilled salmon pasta dish but I was satisfied with the salad. The grilled salmon was lightly seasoned and not overcooked. Underneath the salad was some mashed potatoes which was different but worked well with the dressing. Penn T had the lamb sandwich, and I tried a little piece of the lamb and it was really good. I'm not sure how long this place has been in El Segundo but I regret not coming here sooner. Penn has mentioned that their rib eye dinner is really good. I'll have to come back and try that the next time. read more

The Yelp reviews for Chef Hannes scream "hidden gem," much like Dominique's in Hermosa Beach. After paying Chef Hannes a visit, however, I wish I had stuck with Dominique's. There is ZERO ambience here--a little dark, a little stinky, and unwelcoming at best. Our waitress was gruff and clearly disgruntled. The food, however, was surprisingly decent, perhaps because our expectations had plummeted after seeing this place. The garlic potato spread that was unceremoniously plopped down on our table was hearty and satisfying, almost a meal in itself with the warm bread. Hubby's meat loaf was unmemorable, but my lamb linguini was fantastic--I enjoyed every bite of the flavorful, tender braised lamb and perfectly cooked pasta. Even the leftovers tasted great the next day. Dessert, a lemon mascarpone bread pudding, was not as sweet (the lemon balanced out the sweetness nicely) or heavy as other bread puddings I've had and was a pleasant way to end the meal. On my last visit out to El Segundo I was yelping around and found this place. The place made me very happy A nice cozy bistro atmosphere with an eclectic menu. So eclectic in fact that I didn't know what to get even after reviewing the many yelps. I started with a nice apple, blue cheese, salad followed by a wonderful pasta seafood dish. This place was on the way back from the airport so my husband and I decided to give this place a try. At first glance, this place seems tiny however there's another room that's connected to the main dining room that's pretty big. The restaurant is a bit dark, however I think this adds to their charm and ambiance. I don't mind dark restaurants as much as other people. Because I have actually dined completely in the dark a few times. My husband was tired from his long trip so he made up his mind quickly on what he wanted which was the lamb. I had to skipped around but eventually settled on the shrimp scampi with rice. As others have mentioned there potato garlic dip that comes with their bread is OUT OF THIS WORLD good!! You should come here to try this, if ONLY for this! We started with the Caesar salad, I usually don't eat the croutons that comes with salads at restaurants because they always end up being so hard that I'd be afraid I might cut my mouth. However, at this place the croutons kind of reminds me of small pieces of freshly made toasts in the morning. Very nice. My shrimp/prawn scampi was good, the shrimp were HUGE and their side vegetables were bok choy and carrots! I LOVE bok choy! Each prawn was packed with lots of spices and flavor. My husband's lamb, according to him was better than average but not phenomenal. I don't like lamb so I didn't try it. But it did look very flavorful as it was drenched with sauce. Our waitress forgot my husband's drink, which when found out she was very apologetic and offered to bring us a complementary dessert. Their Creme Brûlée was what you would expect : traditional goodness. We don't go to El Segundo for dinner, because my husband thinks it's a bit out of the way, but I hope this review will help those who dine often in the area discover this neighborhood gem. Tried this restaurant because of restaurant.com certificate. We were impressed and have been back more than a dozen times since. Food is reasonably priced for quantity and quality. They even pour you samples of wine to let you try before you decide on a glass. We found the staff to be friendly and they get to know you after a while. We enjoy food at this restaurant more than the sister restaurant in El Segundo, De Luca Trattoria. The other restaurant does have music some nites, though, which is a nice touch. read more

The perfect place for an intimate & delicious wedding reception. My now-wife and I were on a time crunch to find a restaurant to hold our ~40 guest wedding reception. From the moment we stepped inside Chef Hannes and met the owner (Hannes), we knew it was the perfect place for us. Hannes was very laid back, flexible, and available to talk to during the weeks leading up to the big day. ATMOSPHERE: The restaurant is very cute, and already has a great ambiance for a romantic dinner or private party. There are multiple options for hosting a party including a large banquet room that fits about 40 people (we had 41), and a back private room that could fit about 8-12. Because we held our reception on a Sunday when the restaurant is usually closed, we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. Hannes let us bring in decorations in the morning, set up tables how we liked, and put on our own music (on spotify through an iPad). FOOD: Delicious is an understatement! We gave our guests the options of Citrus Garlic Shrimp Scampi, Beef Short Ribs, Chicken Toscana, and Spaghetti Primavera. All the guests raved at how good the food was. Great presentation too! The appetizers and bread/garlic spread are divine! PRICE: You won't get a better deal for what you get in return. The food, the room, the flexibility, the service... everything was top notch. At the end of the night, when I paid my bill, Chef Hannes told me that I was getting a great deal. I looked at the final bill and was wonderfully surprised! It was about half the cost of some other restaurants that quoted us in the area. And like I mentioned, the quality of the food, service, and overall atmosphere couldn't be beat! In closing, we are most grateful to Chef Hannes for providing the perfect space to celebrate our wedding day with our closest friends and family.
