I hadn't been here in years, and my sis picked this for our lunch date. It's a small-mid sized space that is well-lit with a bright South American vibe. We sat in a booth and split a half pitcher of passion fruit sour. We probably would have been fine with a glass each, but the menu only gave the option for a half or whole pitcher. I can't pass up an order of tostones, so that was an easy immediate yes appetizer. I also love a good lomo saltado con bistec, so that was my entrée I thought it was a tad chewy, but still delicious. There were no crumbs left on my plate. Service was pretty quick initially, but the waitress took a long time to come back at the end. It could have been that she was waiting because there was still some drink in our glasses, but it was a little much not to at least come check in and refill waters. Four of us had lunch here because we like to try different ethnic restaurants in Milwaukee. The overall setting makes attempts at Peruvian, but it is clearly a mom or pop place (intimate, basic, etc.). The menu is extensive and some clarification is needed from the helpful waitress. The ambiance is handled nicely by the curtains between the tables and the fireplace on the television, trust me it works. My wife had the Tacu Tacu with grilled steak and I had Inka Paella. They were awesome dishes. I've had Paella in a few different countries and this ranks right up there with great flavors and portions. My wife's Tacu Tacu came with grilled steak. Went to get lunch here on a Saturday at noon. When I walked into this quaint restaurant, it wasn't too busy, but that quickly changed. The server was really nice and told me to sit where I wanted to. Once my sister arrived, we ordered a half pitcher of sangria and some chicken fried rice and tilapia fried rice. It only took about 15-20 minutes to get the food. My sister was nervous about trying something new, but once she had a bite of her food, she immediately fell in love. My chicken was so juicy and moist. The rice was good as well. Just and FYI, the meat is not chopped up and mixed in with the rice, but rather laid on top in larger pieces. FOOD: Chef Paz is somewhere you go when you've got an appetite. The empanadas were delicious! Albeit they're a wee oily. I recommend eating these with a napkin. I ordered the salchipapas next. They were pretty decent. I wish the fries were crispier but the flavors were there. The entree was the best part. I love a good runny egg. The flavors married well together. Let me start by saying never judge a book by it's cover. My family thought what kind of name is that for a restaurant? We found this quaint little restaurant on Yelp. When we walked in, this place was hoppin. There were only a few (2) tables open. We sat down and our waitress greeted us and said she would be right with us. This is without a doubt one of the best gems Milwaukee has to offer when it comes to Latin American food. The Peruvian ceviche and Bistec a lo Pobre were phenomenal. The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare with a delicious egg on top. Service also was great, and our waiter was very attentive. I can't believe that I can walk to this place and it's been on my foodie bucket list for ever and I'm just getting over. The place is small and charming with tables and booths and all ethnic people eating so you know it's going to be good. The menu has amazing dishes but I could only have one so it's going to be hard to choose so let's order a Peruvian cocktail the pisco sour in passion fruit flavor, small is a 1/2 pitcher so bring it on. OMG the pisco sour is fu#king delicious. I ordered the Inka paella with shrimp, calamari and mussels which is a seafood rice dish. It came piping hot to my table and looked great. My first thought was that's it's seasoned nicely and tasty. It's actually very good with perfect cooked seafood and the calamari wasn't a rubber band like some places but the mussels were over cooked because it was on the chewy side, no big deal. Wanted to try something different. There menu is quite extensive. Their food is yummy. The server was quick to Describe and explain the different dishes. The decor is just plain old small restaurant nothing fancy, they do have larger table setting for larger groups and booths for smaller groups. The food portions are quite large and you could eat just an appetizer and feel like you had a full meal. The Chicken Pot Gratin was the hands down winner of our choices. This was good. The service was friendly and fast. The yuca was amazing. I have loved yuca ever since I discovered its amazingness in Ecuador. The arroz con pollo was OK. It's my go to in Peruvian restaurants. The sauce came on the side, which was a bit disappointing. In other places in the US (also owned by Peruvians), the chicken was smothered in it. The tres leches was a bit more grainy than I like. I've had tres leches like that before, just not my favorite way. BUT it was so luscious and creamy like it should be. The flavors were fantastic. I came by myself, so I didn't have other food to share with others and try more like I often will. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant, and I will come back and try more of their foods. read more

Having just returned from a trip to Lima Peru a few weeks ago, I'd say this place has got it spot on. Authentic presentation and flavors. We ordered the Aji de Gallina Traditional (chicken pot gratin) and the Arroz con Pollo (chicken and rice) with an order of Papa a la Huancaina as an appetizer. The appetizer was potatoes in a bright yellow sauce somewhat similar to hollandaise. I thought the sauce was a little over-salted and that eclipsed the other subtle flavors in the dish. The chicken gratin came piping hot on a cast iron dish. On top there was a potato crust which covered a stew of pulled chicken in a mild yellow sauce. On the side was a small container of bright green sauce which was full of herbs and just a bit of a spicy kick. This sauce really made the dish. The chicken was perfectly cooked, butterflied, pounded flat and grilled (but not overcooked). It was seasoned well and relatively lean. The rice was fantastic. A yellow rice seasoned with cilantro and cumin? mixed sparingly with peas and carrots. Also, be sure to try the Chicha Morada juice beverage. It's fruity and rich, with strong flavors of cinnamon and spice. A delightful combination. I didn't love everything I tried, but the flavors I sampled (and the other dishes I saw coming out of the kitchen) make me want to come back to try more of the menu. read more

My husband and I have heard many people rave about the authenticity and flavorful dishes Chef Paz have. We wanted to try something new and decided to stop in for lunch on a Sunday morning and it was the best decision we made the whole weekend! Don't let the tiny building and location fool you. A few minutes after our arrival, the place was packed with maybe one or two seatings left, so we arrived just in time before the rush. You can tell the workers are very family oriented and the service was great! Ordered the Beef stew, Inka paella and empanada (can't remember which one - there are two kind). There was a little wait since it was busy but the wait wasn't long and if so, it was worth it because the food was just amazing! The beef stew was cooked to perfection. It was very tender and not dry like most beef stew. The paella was my favorite. I love the green sauce that comes with each dish. The seafood was perfectly cooked. Most paella I have had at other places are soggy or the seafood is over cooked and chewy/mushy. My husband loved the empanada. We chose chicken for our meat and it was not dry at all. The chicken was very juicy and tender. The best part was the crust. It was crunchy and flaky which is different from what we've experienced before. I highly recommend Chef Paz if you want to step out of your normal dine-in places and try something new. The food, seasoning and service is great. We are definitely going back. We have ordered from here a couple of times at my work, so I have eaten their food before. It has been fantastic, so I decided to try eating at the restaurant. There is not a ton of seating, but I found it to be a very cozy space. The front door opens right to the outside. They have some plastic strips that restaurants use on their coolers inside the front door that you have to part to go inside. That definitely helped keep down some of the drafts. I thought it was a very clever setup! The staff were all very friendly and made me feel right at home! I ordered the grilled chicken fried rice. It is so flavorful and a very generous portion! It is just incredible! This is a Peruvian inspired restaurant. My boss is from Peru and he said the food is very authentic. He told me that Chinese food is a huge influence on Peruvian cuisine. I have to say the fried rice is better than I have ever had at any Chinese or Japanese restaurant! It also comes with a green cilantro sauce on the side. Very flavorful and delicious sauce! Chef Paz is a Peruvian restaurant in a hole-in-the-wall location. You wouldn't really look at this area twice. The building itself is run down and the inside decor is nothing to look at. The place has a little bit of a funky smell (like an old home smell) when you walk in but you get used to it. I had the chicha morada to drink. It is a sweet purple corn drink made with cinnamon and pineapple juice. I have had it from other Peruvian restaurants (Triciclo Peru) and always enjoy it. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy it from Chef Paz. When I tried the drink, there was this strong savory taste. It tasted like there was garlic in my drink. It was so strange, and it didn't go away. I am not sure if that's how this drink always tastes here or if there was some mistake/contamination with savory garlic/onion ingredient. All I can say for sure is that it was not enjoyable. It's also weird that you can not simply order a glass of many drinks. A lot of the drinks on the menu require you to order at least a pitcher which is really inconvenient if you just want a glass. For appetizers, my family and I ordered two empanadas (1 chicken, 1 beef) and the beef heart skewers. The empanadas were good, but the star of the appetizers (& the whole meal basically) were the beef heart skewers. They were tender and flavorful. The plate also comes with the giant corn which I love. For entrees my mom had the beef stew, my grandma had the chicken con arroz, and I had Lomo satado tacu tacu. The beef stew was yummy but did not come with a lot of meat. Same thing with the lomo saltado... it was lacking a good amount of meat and just a lot of veggies like onions and tomatoes. The chicken was just really standard grilled chicken - nothing special there. The tacu tacu mash thing was 99% beans (I thought rice is supposed to be involved?) and the egg was over cooked (no runny yolk! Not even a medium or soft yolk... fully cooked through yolk.) For dessert we had the tres leches cake and the alfajores. Alfajores are shortbread cookies with dolce de leche in between- what's not to like about that? They were obviously delicious. The cake was normal tres leches that you'd get from any other restaurant (Latin or not). For the vibe of this place and the amount of protein they give you on your entree - I would say it's a bit overpriced. The food was not bad and the service was ok, but it's just not special. I did not get the feeling or experience that would make me want to return to Chef Paz in the near future. I would recommend Triciclo Peru over Chef Paz. It is interesting to try new types of cuisine, so if this is your only opportunity to taste some Peruvian food, I'd say you should go for it... but if you have other options, maybe stick to those unless you're nearby! read more
